The New Eagle Café is located at one end of a strip mall on N. Nimitz Hwy. After missing the driveway entrance on our first pass, we circled back and turned into the parking lot and had no problems getting a space in front. On this Monday evening, we met friends here for dinner. The restaurant is large with a mixture of booths and tables. What I did notice was that a lot of locals dine here. After checking the menu, we also noticed the daily specials placard on the table. The day's special was Ox Tail Stew. As Ox Tail Stews lovers, several of us ordered it. With a coupon from a local paper, we also got soup or salad and a soda. I opted for the beef barley soup. It had good flavor and was hearty. The Oxtail Stew consisted of five good size pieces and in a nice tomato based sauce. It had carrots and celery, but I didn't get any potatoes, which my friend's did get. I opted for white rice with my stew, which went well with sopping up the gravy. Service was non-sense and efficient. Overall, it was a good experience at New Eagle Café. read more

If this was based purely on the waitress, I would give this review 5 stars as she was extremely kind and accomdating to my family's requests. But unforutnately I am basing this on the food and the consequences of what was ordered. I have been here a few times before and all though the food was never a result of a 5-star restaurant, it was good cheap food. And if you have lived here in Hawaii long enough, people like good cheap food (this is not a bad reflection of the people/culture here - just a fact). But this last time is pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back. My mom ordered a sandwhich/salad combo, my dad their liver dish (came with bacon, and fries) and I ordered the mandoo udon. I took barely 10 bites into my udon when I notice a long string of plastic. I quickly put it on the table, put down my chopsticks and spoon and sat back waiting for the waitress. When she stopped by I show the plastic to her and she asked if I wanted the meal redone or order something completely different. My dad asked her to redo the meal as we don't know if there is more plastic in the soup. After she left with my bowl I got worried that maybe they wouldn't make a new bowl but just additional udon/mandoo to my already existing dish. So I quickly called the waitress over and asked if I could just cancel that second dish and order something else, to which she acknowledged it won't be on the bill and I ordered a ceasar salad. The waitress did acknowledge that the udon comes prepackaged (1 package is 1 order) and part of the package accidentally appeared in my bowl. My dad later questioned our waitress about how thin his liver appeared on his dish. She acknowledged that it came prepacked like that from a vendor. My dad mentioned maybe they should change vendors because the fact that the liver is so thin, cooking it makes it tough, not very easy to chew. But my dad did acknowledge he will keep it and it but if they could give a discount because of the toughness of the food. My poor waitress, bless her heart, was very patient with us and felt bad that she said she will give us desserts of our choice, on the house. Later, the liver dish gave my dad an upset stomach, which as soon as we got home, my dad spent a good amount of time in the bathroom. Hawaii is running out of coffee shop style restaurants that serve good, solid local food. So many of the long time local establishments have shuttered, including Kenny's in Kalihi and Flamingo's in Pearl City--both within the same month. It's a shame. Thank goodness New Eagle Cafe is still around and by the looks of the crowd, hopefully it will continue to be around for a long time. New Eagle Cafe has an extensive menu that includes a lot of local favorites and Prime Rib! My favorite here is the Hawaiian Chopped Steak that comes on a sizzling platter. The meat is tender and it is loaded with a ton of vegetables. Their sandwiches are delicious too with items such as Patty Melt, Tuna Melt, and Clubhouse along with French Dip and Prime Rib sandwiches. There are also local favorites, such as Oxtail Soup, Saimin, and even Mandoo Min, which is delicious! The menu also includes Japanese teishoku dinners. For those with kiddies, New Eagle Cafe also offers a keiki menu for kids 10 and under. Each meal includes a drink and dessert. Entrees include beef teriyaki, saimin, macaroni and cheese, and chicken yakitori, to name a few. There is bound to be something on the menu for even the pickiest eater. My little nephew loved the saimin here! Oh and wait...there's more! The desserts here are to die for! This place has the most extensive list of pies available! Apple, coconut, banana, jello cream, peach, pear, and my favorite (and so hard to find)--APRICOT!! New Eagle Cafe is a great place to take the whole family (young and old) for a meal without having to break the piggy bank. A classic diner-like restaurant, similar to Denny's or IHOP with a more "local" menu. While there is a wide range of menu options and specials (everything from saimin to steaks!), I honestly found the food to be pretty mediocre. Entrees come with pre-frozen/canned vegetables and nothing really looks or tastes fresh. I had heard good things about the sesame garlic chicken, so I decided to order that. Taste wise, it was good and came with a TON. However, it also contained quite a bit of fried skin and was overly sauced (personal preference; my co-worker ordered the same thing and liked the amount of sauce). Prices are probably on par with the previously mentioned diners, but they have a deal where for an extra $3.50 you get a soup/salad, drink, and dessert! While it's not the most glamorous choice, sometimes all you want to do is dress in your sweats and get some local comfort food, on an extremely casual level. I've had ups and downs with this place. This is my final attempt at getting good food from here. They serve their customers food that isn't fresh. I ordered a clubhouse sandwich with no meat and added avocado. At the first glance the avocado was brown. Knowing that happens sometimes I started to eat it. After my second bite my stomach couldn't bare it. Looking more closely I noticed the avocado had clearly been an old one sitting in their fridge for days. There are things growing in it. Seriously. New Eagle Cafe is a great local diner that offers your homestyle food served up in local fashion that makes you almost think that you are at your auntie's house eating dinner. The prices are reasonable and the portions are rather good. The menu is your run of the mill local menu with staples like hamburger steak, tempura bentos and the like. I personally love their french dip with french fries. It never wows but at the same time never disappoints. The meat they use is well cooked, full of flavor, and shaved to the perfect slice. The aunties that serve you can be hot or cold. Seriously. Some will be very pleasant and others just throwing the food in front of you. Hmm, sounds more like my aunties house come to think of it. This was our first time esting here, food was ok But the Service= server hardly came around, another server was more attentive than our actual server. The other server came by twice to refill our water and check on us. It's been more than five years December 2008) since I last posted about the New Eagle Café; I've been there to eat several times since, but recently, the wife and I went there for the first time since the new owner took over a few months ago (March 2013, according to the cashier). New Eagle boasts a newly refurbished décor; it has more of an classy look, utilizing a deep-dark maroon-violet color scheme for the booths and wait help uniforms. It features upgraded menu selections with new daily specials promoted at the tables. We went on a Thursday, when one of the lunch specials was Braised Short Ribs with Spanish Sauce. Now let me tell you, it's been a while since I had braised short ribs. They used to be a staple at Zippy's, but they stopped offering it except on rare occasions. So it was with extreme delight that I ordered the braised ribs. Let me tell you, it was great. The meat is "fall off the bone" tender and succulent, and the gravy/sauce is absolutely flavorful up the kazoo. It's more like a brown gravy with veggies in it, but let me tell you, I almost asked for another little bowl of the sauce on the side so I could slop it all over my rice when the meat was totally consumed. For a couple of dollars more, you can have a complete meal, so I had curry soup as a starter. I only drank half of it and took the rest home to reduce and use as a flavoring for my scrambled eggs the next morning. You ought to try it; it's delicious. You also get a dessert with the complete meal. After checking out the selection, the wife and I ordered squares of Banana Cream Pie. Oooo, banana-y and so creamy. Truthfully, I was too full to eat all of my pie, so I took half of mine home. The wife brought her whole serving home. Gonna go back sooner than I thought, that's for sure. My family and my fave "Sunday after church" breakfast/brunch go to place. This review is for their breakfast ONLY. I love love love their waffles which for some reasons tastes different compared to other breakfast places I have been to. I think their prices are also very reasonable. My parents always get the Japanese Breakfast which consists of miso butterfish, miso soup, rice, and salad. I have tried that as well and was worth it if you feel like eating something light. My sister mostly gets the omelets and loco moco which she is satisfied as well. The workers are very friendly and nice (I think they notice my family a lot too that's why lol) Can't go wrong with eating breakfast here! And the variety they provide! I haven't gone to New Eagle Cafe for over 20 years, they really changed the menu a lot. The cafe gives an older cafe look in which the staff is very pleasant. Listening to a customer next to us saying they always make mistake on their orders, then to get my rice wrong. Besides that the food was good. I had my second loco moco of our trip here. It was much better. The hamburger steak was a much higher quality and was cooked really well. The egg was perfectly runny. The gravy was also pretty good. This is one of those places I go to for comfort food. I usually want the hamburger steak because it comes with rice and "hot vegetable," which is almost always corn. There's something magical about eating white rice, sweet corn and brown gravy together right after taking a bite of the hamburger steak. My hubby usually gets the mahi mahi and doesn't talk while he eats, which means it's very, very good! We went last Sunday after a play at Kumu Kahua, and it was about 4 p.m., so we even got the 3-5 p.m. discount prices! For a mere $6, we added soup or salad, a huge drink and dessert to our meal. The real reason I'm mentioning this is the soup. It was chicken vegetable with REAL chicken in it, and the taste was "just right"! My son had the two scrambled eggs, bacon, and hash browns. He REALLY liked the hash browns. His dad ordered the vegetable omelet with rice and I ordered the two scrambled eggs, luncheon meat, and rice. We didn't have to wait long for our food and our breakfast experience was a very good one. Which resulted in our returning for a second time later on that week for lunch. We actually got there around 11:00 a.m., and found out that they serve breakfast till 12 Noon. Yay!!! I proceeded to order the two scrambled eggs, rice, and bacon. Oh, and I also ordered a Belgian Waffle. My honey ordered the (medium) Rib Eye with French fries. He also ordered a salad with Ranch dressing. While the waitress was friendly, she was also forgetful. My order came out exactly how I wanted it. However, my honey's order did not. He got rice instead of French fries and French dressing instead of Ranch dressing. The waitress said it would take about 10 minutes for the French fries. I can understand if the place was packed with people, but there weren't that many people in the restaurant during that time for her to overlook or forget what he ordered. It did cross my mind if we should request (in the future) for the waitress to repeat our order, but I hate coming off like that. Overall the food and service during this second visit was okay. Service here is a hit or miss. So is the food. You just gotta know what to order. Asking the servers won't help. They'll just tell you everything is good and it just depends on what you like to eat. However, prices are doable, especially for the large portions given. My most recent visit here was less than a month ago, but I've eaten here several times over the years. Other than what I ate during my last visit, the only dish I remember is their oxtail soup. It's exactly how my Aunty makes it. A must try!! My recent meal was the beef brisket with bar-b-q sauce. I was a bit disappointed bc I've tasted way better brisket by itself with no sauce at all. The BBQ sauce tasted like it came from a bottle, and it did overpower the brisket. I did have a lot of leftovers. So what I did was make homemade gravy and put that over brisket and it tasted waaaay better than with the BBQ sauce. Their menu does have a variety of food items. From American food to Japanese food to local favorites. I haven't been here enough to try all that I've wanted. Okay so yes, the service isn't the best here. Wait staff talk to each other loudly and pay little attention to you. I never got a water refill the whole time we were there. BUT the food is good. They took our order promptly and food came out super fast. I got the loco moco and it was pretty good. Boyfriend got the katsu curry and it was surprisingly good too. I do not recommend getting the mandoo - it just didn't taste right. Second visit - loco moco, (which was ono stick to the ribs and satisfying), omelette (also yummy). SERVICE: Sorry but service was noticeably s-l-o-w and spotty. But in fairness they WERE busy. So ok i can chill about that. However, on the last visit i was going to order a piece of pie and a cup of joe to finish off the meal. Unfortunately I never had the chance as the waitress kind of flitted at the other tables, never saw her again - no checkup on how the meal was, no ask if i needed anything - water, dessert, nuthin! Being a creature of habit, I had the Macadamia Nut pancakes again. However, I decided to try it with the hamburger instead of ham. The hamburger was a winner! Not oily or salty...a little on the dry side but not burnt. I liked it and will get it again...unless I get adventurous and try something else. Return visit after nearly 7 months on a Wednesday evening for dinner. Pretty empty but with enough staff (2 waitresses plus hostess) to take care of the guests. I was very surprised at how good the BBQ was last time but this time and was really tempted to order it again but decided at the last second to order the prime rib for two special. Chose the cream of mushroom soup soup instead of salad. I wasn't disappointed but Marian, for whatever reason, didn't care for the soup. All the better since the prime rib slice is pretty big and she didn't want to fill up on soup. The prime rib slices were perfectly done: medium rare for me and medium for Marian. Very tender, just about as good as prime rib gets although a salt crust on the outside would have made it perfect. I was in the mood for fries instead of rice or mashed potatoes and when they came, I was pleasantly surprised that they were crinkle cut, my favorite. For dessert, we both followed fellow Yelpers' suggestion of the pumpkin crunch. Man, that was good. The pumpkin pie filling on the top is nothing special really but the bottom crust was like a perfectly nutty and crunchy cookie that complemented the pumpkin perfectly. I used to always order the coconut pie but never again as long as they have this awesome pumpkin crunch. Service could definitely improve. While I am ok with a lot of things, service is something that should be a top priority. Going to New Eagle after a short trip to Home Depot was something I looked forward to. I ordered the hamburger on rye, tried to shake out pepper and the holder was GROSS, ditto for the salt. It is evident that this place DOES NOT clean the salt and pepper shakers on a regular basis, which is a necessity for health reasons. So, it seems the workers may not care about cleanliness. Well at least my hamburger steak was. I don't know about my husbands seafood plate. Each plate comes with White or Brown rice and a vegetable. We were not offered a drink refill. The restaurant was busy with what appears to be "old timers" we passed on desert being that we had a 2pm appointment. I used to have lunch at New Eagle Cafe when they were in downtown Honolulu and really enjoyed their food. I was disappointed when they closed. The restaurant relocated to a new location several years ago under new management. It continues to serve delicious local diner food. Overall, good portions and tasty delicious food. They have a coupon you can find in the newspaper, that can turn an entree into a meal with a non alcoholic drink and soup or salad. If you order a salad, definitely have it with their house French dressing. Their dressing is so good, I even buy it to bring home. They have daily specials so definitely check them out. I'm always in search for Oxtail Stew. It's their Monday special. In my opinion, one of the best Local style "homemade" Oxtail Stew you will find. I also like their Mahi Mahi entree. Service is OK, some wait staff is just a bit friendlier and attentive than others. One of my favorites places for home style local food, especially the Oxtail Stew. New eagle cafe has been a recent go-to because of their groupon. We enjoy the breakfast selections, especially the crispy hash browns. This morning we had omelettes with veggies of our choice (not on the menu), hash browns, rye toast and a hotcake. Everything was perfectly cooked and it is 7pm and we haven't felt hungry until now. Went here on the recomendation of friends with friends. Parking...Great, get choke plenty. Atmosphere...Nice clean and comfortable. Service.... We had to call the waitress to come and take our order. She got 6 of 7 orders correct. Not bad, but not good for that 1 person. The food was ok nothing spectacular. My beef stew had no carrots. I thought that would be a given. Also, had to order the mac salad seperate. Aaa, the mac salad.....terrible. No taste at all. Everyones overall experience was just ok. Except for the guy who didnt get his order right. Was skeptical to come here after reading the review of the hostess that dips her hands in rude customers waters but since my family wanted to eat here I joined. Overall, service was okay. Only thing that I didn't like was that their mash potatoes tasted so generic like its the powdered package. Other than that, 3 stars because food and service was okay. Nothing too amazing. read more
