Edwin is a very experienced builder. He was able to diagnose our years-long water infiltration issue in a brief visit. His team started work in the next week and the whole job was professionally done after four days. He knows every aspect of residential construction and can come up with creative solutions for whatever issues you're having. He handled three issues on our property--a back-up sump pump, a downspout that was bringing water back into our house instead of to the street, and some washout from underneath one corner of our foundation from years of rainwater running where it shouldn't. He also repaired a mudsill that was damage by rats. We needed a small job done on our garage foundation and ER provided one of the more reasonable estimates for structural contractors. Choosing them ended up being a great decision. Not only was our foundation replacement done quickly and to good quality, Edwin also stepped in to help us work with the city permitting office when our engineering team proved to be unhelpful. Except for a minor misunderstanding regarding the engineering drawings, Edwin and his team did a great job and went above and beyond to make sure everything was done in compliance with the city. Edwin and his team came to our rescue after the torrential rains during the spring of 2023 caused our lower level to flood. He worked quickly to put in a short-term solution that kept the water out for the remainder of the season, then later in the summer when we were starting a large landscaping project, he completed a comprehensive french drain system around the perimeter of our house. Edwin was able to collaborate with our landscaping team to develop the best design that would integrate with our plan and the two crews were able to work alongside each other seamlessly, even finding some efficiencies in doing both projects at once. Edwin was quick to respond to my request for an inspection of my kitchen floor. I had noticed the hardwood was sagging in an area that previously housed a sub-floor furnace, which had been removed two years earlier. During his inspection, Edwin discovered that the company that removed the furnace had made cuts in a support beam and stitched it back together with metal braces. He explained that while it might hold, there was a risk it could eventually fail. After the inspection, he promptly provided a quote and followed up with a detailed contract. Once we scheduled the work, Edwin and his team were fast and efficient. Our crawl space is tight, but they managed to raise and brace the floor, dig holes, pour cement, and reinforce the new support beam -- all in short order. Noticed our floor was sinking one awful day. Discovered that previous owner's had "fixed" the foundation of my house only aesthetically, and that 4 key support columns were sinking and leaning sideways. I interviewed multiple contractors, and am incredibly happy we went with Edwin. His crew got started promptly, and worked professionally and were pleasant to chat with. Edwin explained how foundation support columns such as mine are supposed to be built, and also pointed out that the seismic retrofit that was done in our crawlspace was woefully inadequate. I had a couple of leaks in our home and called a Villatoro Construction to do some waterproofing. I thought the job was completed only to see water intrusion again after the rain in both places! It was very disappointing to see the leak wasn't fixed properly. I didn't want to use them again, so my wife and I decided to look elsewhere and are very happy to have found ER Home Improvements! We were in desperate need of help. The recent rains had turned our backyard into a muddy mess. For fear that we'd have a mudslide, we called Edwin based on the positive reviews we saw on Yelp. He was able to visit that day and provided a consultation and quote in a matter of hours. He immediately got to work due to the severity of issues. Here was the scope of his work: Removed existing tile, plumbing, plaster, subfloor, vanity, and medicine cabinet Sistered new framing on to rotted joists and applied epoxy to seal off the dry rot Installed a new subfloor Framed a tub surround and installed a drop-in tub Installed cement board and drywall Installed floor and wall tile Painted the walls and preexisting built-in cabinets Installed a wall-mounted sink (and associated framing behind to support it) Installed a mirror Pros: Had good followthrough until the end, making sure that the project was picture perfect Always answered his phone and was highly available by text Was able to work on a couple of Saturdays to help us make our extremely tight timeline Was committed to going the extra mile to ensure that we were happy and felt like it was a job well done Assigned two workers to the project every day who worked fast. They were constantly in action and the changes every day were dramatic. I am still impressed with how much they were able to get done. Was able to schedule within a reasonable timeframe, unlike some of those contractors who are not available for months and months. Overall nice guy; easy to talk to and work with Cons: Installed floor to ceiling cement board and then installed the bath tub, which is the wrong way to do it. The right way to do it would have been to run the cement board to the top of the flange (overhanging) so that water that made it to the cement board (which we waterproofed with RedGard) would run down into the tub. As a result, we were forced to install another layer of cement board on top, which led to inconveniences down the road with the finish plumbing (valves were too deep). That being said, Edwin did take ownership of the problem and came on Saturday to fix it. read more

Discovered some pretty bad dry rot in one of the posts for our home and Edwin was one of the few contractors that returned my call and had time to come out. Was pleasantly surprised at the quick response time and did a great job even though it was a relatively small job. Will definitely keep them in mind for future projects on the home. read more

Edwin and Manuel diagnosed a leak for us in May 2018. It turned out that the toilet in the upstairs condo was leaking onto our ceiling. I asked them for a repair estimate. It took them an entire week to send us an estimate (meanwhile, there was a giant hole in our ceiling and the toilet continued to drip onto our floor every time the toilet was flushed upstairs). And, when they finally got around to giving us an estimate, they estimated it would cost $2900 to fix the toilet and patch up the ceiling. What?? Are you kidding me? That is laughably expensive. So either they overcharge by about 3x the actual cost, or they were not interested in helping us to repair the damage. We ended up spending about $800 to fix everything, which is a much more reasonable and fair price. So, if you like being overcharged for services, these guys will certainly do that. The only reason I'm not giving them 1 star is because they were both very nice. read more

The next day he was available to scope the work, he is knowledgeable and made time talked to the engineer to walk through the plan/drawings on what needed to be done. He provided me a good quote and was able to schedule the work on my foundation and installing french drainage within the next week. The guys he works with Alfredo, Javier and Antonio were great. They always came in with great attitude and explained what they are scheduled to do for the day. They kept the area clean and were respectful of everything around. They also did extra work that they saw needed attention without adding additional costs to me. I definitely recommend them. read more

Edwin's company did not work out for us, based on perfect reviews we called about finding source of water leaking through what appears to be a failing wooden window frame. He came, performed water test, charged $ 450.00, promised a report and estimate for repairs but we haven't gotten ANY follow up even asking three times. Buyer beware. read more

After the recent earthquakes, we noticed new cracks and some alarming slippage of roof support pillars on the front porch. After calling several contractors and having conversations about the issue, we found Edwin. He came over on that same day and assessed the problem as being foundation-related. My experience with this person was an unpleasant one. Isn't very punctual. Prices are overrated. And although a mask was worn for whatever reason he felt the need to takeoff his mask as he was coughing. I have heard this multiple times elsewhere and it still leaves me speechless on why people do that. Either way I don't recommend them because I didn't like the selling tactics. An El Nino winter on the way!! Oh no, who ya gonna call? ER Home Improvement is your guy. What a pleasure it was to work with Edwin and his crew. Customer satisfaction really is his primary goal. Our down-sloped rear yard has been moving downhill for years. His crew replaced a failing wood retaining wall with keystone blocks and added a second, smaller one half way up the slope (per our request) on the steepest section. The quality of their work was excellent. He did not try to oversell anything, but was forthcoming with helpful suggestions to provide the best job while keeping the cost down. He was very flexible and accommodated minor adjustments to the original layout. He managed to save the hubby's beloved Cactus plan. His crew even separated/saved the "good" wood boards that he ended up re-using to shore up the eroding dirt behind our rot iron fencing (for nominal, additional charge, of course - but Hey, the man's gotta eat too!) They were very friendly and cleaned up each day in the 100+ degree sun. They stuck to the schedule and even brought additional guys to finish early! Thanks Edwin! Edwin recently finished another job for me - this time indoors. I wanted to remove a set of doors and fill in the wall. He had to match the floor board detail and got a great painter to come in and paint my whole place. He did this as well as pull some new outlets, add a channel for my cable line (HIS IDEA - I love it, fewer cords to look at), and install an outdoor light (with indoor light switch). After the recent rainstorms, we had some major water leaking issues in our newly renovated office (done by a different contractor). Edwin came out and after a thorough inspection was able to identify all the issues where the back wall wasn't properly sealed and waterproofed. He and his team were very professional - he even showed up an hour early on the first day! They relocated a support beam under our shed, rebuilt the exterior wall to the studio, cleaned out the framing, removed and replaced the damaged drywall, applied seal and waterproofing to an exterior wall of the shed, sealed/waterproofed the back corner and roof corner, poured a concrete retaining ledge along another corner, and installed a french drain. Edwin made our project a top priority and everything was completed in under 3 days. He also called to follow up a couple times over the next week to make sure there was no leaking during the next rainstorm. After a frustrating experience with a previous contractor, it was a joy to work with Edwin - he was very communicative about everything, got the project done in a timely manner, and demonstrated compassion and sympathy when we discovered this huge problem with our brand new office space. We worked with Edwin to renovate our bathroom. The project included a full gut of the bathroom and install of new a new toilet, bathtub, vanity, fixtures, custom built-in shelf, pocket door, and tile work all four walls. Edwin and his team also reinforced the subfloor based on their recommendation to do so. In addition, the plumbing was relocated into the wall and the electrical outlets were relocated to accommodate the design of the new space. A contractor hadn't looked at the house in 30 years. When we had the money, we looked for a contractor. We started with Yelp. When I saw a local organization with 4.5 stars, I gave them a ring. The person who answered the phone was nice. The estimator and contractor, Edwin, said it would cost $43k. Housing inspectors came around and told him that the foundation needed more work so I ended up paying another $8k for a work order. So I hired them to install a retaining wall to hold back the soil and adding a french drain beneath it with a pipe running down to the street below. I called Edwin for an estimate because some of the stucco on my house peeled away from the wall & I was worried about dry rot. The house was also long overdue for a paint job & needed other maintenance as well, but the priority was protecting it from rain damage. Edwin came out to inspect the house right away as did one other contracting company. The other company's agent said that 2 areas needed patching & that the stucco needed to be sealed where cracks had formed. Edwin said the same thing, but he returned the next day with a workman & a ladder & they climbed to inspect the second story & the chimney. His bid was higher, but his inspection was more thorough. The contract I signed with Edwin broke the work into 3 stages. First, the stucco was to be repaired. Then the house was to be power washed & primed. Finally, it was to be painted. This was the early autumn of 2015 & I was worried about El Ninio. Edwin completed the first stage of the work promptly so that the house was protected from the rain. The workmen were prompt, hard-working & polite. They cleaned up after themselves & the work was meticulous. Edwin stopped by most days to see that the work was being done properly. Knowing that the house was now protected from El Ninio, I thought it might be best to have other work done on it before having it painted. The house needed a new roof & gutters & some of the windows needed to be replaced. Although it was less convenient for him, Edwin generously told me that I was right to have the work done in that order because "it would be better." He was flexible with the contract which I appreciated. That work was done the following spring & late summer because it took a while for me to do my research & then the windows had to be custom manufactured. Edwin would check in with me from time to time but never pressured me. When I finally called him in September, 2016, Edwin came out immediately & started work a week later. He was busy with other projects but he gave my project priority because he wanted to finish the paint job before the rainy season & because he wanted to "show loyalty to the contract." He even kept to his quoted price although the cost of the paint had gone up in the course of a year. Once the work began, the painters, Freddie & Eric came every day, did meticulous work & in fact left the site cleaner than they found it. One Friday evening, I peaked out of my window to observe Freddie carefully sweeping my front porch before leaving for the week-end. We both knew that he would be painting the porch floor the following Monday & would only have to sweep it again before painting. For various reasons the work took longer than anticipated & another contractor might have been tempted to skimp on the prep work or take other shortcuts, but neither Edwin nor his painters felt that way. They wanted to do the job "right'" and they did. In fact, everything Edwin & his crew did was of the highest quality. When the owner of the window company came to inspect the newly installed windows, I showed him where the re-stuccoing had been done & he was impressed with the excellence of the match. "That's not easy to do," he told me. I consider myself very fortunate to have found Edwin & I will be hiring him again to retrofit my home for earthquakes. read more

I have a chimney leak that comes out in one area of the ceiling on my enclosed porch. I have no idea how many years this has been happening as the porch hasn't been used in years. It was enough water to cause some warping in a few of the wood boards in the ceiling. Manuel came out last year to give an estimate to fix the damage. He poked a huge hole with his pencil in 2 of the boards. That really pissed me off. I said don't do that, and he said that he had to in order to see the damage. He did not have to because you could already see that the boards were warped from the water. Before he poked the holes, the boards didn't look too bad, but after they are really ugly. His quote was for $5,400.00. $4,000.00 of which was labor alone. Way too expensive. My roofer is going to repair everything for $580.00. read more
