We had water intruding into our garage and crawlspace from an outside walkway and I hired Edwin and the team to fix the problem. Edwin came out and met with me personally and laid out his solution to the problem and after a bit of back and forth we got the crew scheduled to do the work. They did a great job completing things quickly and in a high quality way for a job that involved trenching in our crawlspace, tearing up a concrete path on the side of our house to install a french drain, and running the drain pipe out to the street. This required them to dig up our yard and remove the concrete path but they did the work and put everything back as it was so you couldn't even tell they had been there all for a very reasonable price. Mr. Perez came to our home to give us an estimate for a French drain. He spent approximately 10 minutes looking at what needed to be done and said he'd get us a quote in 4 days. Here we are 3 weeks later and haven't heard anything back. I can only assume the job wasn't lucrative enough for his liking. The least he could have done is be honest and say he wasn't able or willing to do the job. Do not recommend. It was a complete waste of our time. read more

These are probably the guys you want for a drainage project in Oakland. We had Paul & his crew design and install a french drain system around the perimeter of our house this spring. Paul came out for an inspection in January and wrote up a detailed estimate for the work, and we booked the work for April. We had a couple other estimates done for the project that were in the same dollar ballpark, but Paul's estimate seemed a bit more detail-oriented. The crew started work right on schedule, worked for seven weekdays straight and wrapped up on time. Both time and price were identical to the estimate. These guys worked hard and did a great job working in some tough conditions (partially under a deck) and took care to be as minimally invasive to landscaping and such as possible. We already had a bit of rain since the project was finished, and I was really astounded by how much water the system was actually diverting. Definitely recommended. read more

Absolutely top-notch. Paul is a very honest and straightforward businessman, and he knows his stuff. When the County suggested an alternate solution to the one we were planning, Paul immediately said he would refund me money for any work they did not perform. Of course, that's the honest response, but that's not so common in this business. I know a little about soil and drainage, so I could try to evaluate our conversations from a technical standpoint, and I found his technical knowledge to be good (as far as I can tell). The quality of the work is good, and his crew are nice. He was also the only contractor who designed a solution that I believe has a good chance of actually working, and the only contractor who actually showed up when it was time to get the work done. I actually had two people out for estimates before Paul, but both disappeared from the face of the Earth before I ever got an estimate. Not only did Paul provide me with the estimate when he said he would, but he also showed up to do the work months later, after I put the money together. I called Carty Construction because his website said free estimates. We scheduled an appointment and he asked me to email him the information. I did so and followed up with him 2 days later to find out that he never went out because he said it was for a real estate transaction and he does not do estimates for free that are not for homeowners. I don't have a problem with his policy, what I did have a problem with was him not communicating that to me as soon as he knew it. He could of responded to the email I sent him, text, or called me and let me know instead I was expecting an estimate from him when he never intended to do it. We had a subterranean drainage trench and drains that needed to be installed at our duplex to forestall more flooding and damage to the foundation. Our duplex is on a double lot, and there was a lot of ground to cover. Really thoughtful guy. Paul came out and took a look at a leak we were having that was due to water coming down from the hillside. We had another guy come out who jumped to recommending a french drain and estimated $5k. Paul came out, looked at the situation, and guessed that the leak probably was more likely due to water rolling over the top of a retaining wall, and advised that we try creating a swale, which would probably only cost us time and maybe a few hundred dollars in material (and wouldn't require his services!). Also helped me look over the drainage pipes on my property, spent a good 30 minutes with me, and didn't want a dime! Will definitely call back if we have any drainage needs. read more

Far and away the best drainage specialist contractor in the East Bay. They do things the right way. He remediated my french drains that another contractor poorly installed. His trenches are very deep (a foot or so below the base of a concrete footing which is about 42 inches below grade). This ensures that his subterranean drainage system catches the ground water well before it breaches and undermines the base of the footing, thus keeping it bone dry. All his employees are very well trained and are careful during their work and they keep their work site clean and safe. He is not a general contractor, he is an expert subcontractor and really understands drainage/waterproofing to an expert level. Drainage is something that is often overlooked, but it's critically important to have it done right. With Mr. Carty you have nothing to worry about because you know he's going to perform the work at an expert level. He's matter of fact and no bs; just honest, to the point and a very pleasant fellow. He works with homeowners and he also only works with the top tier builders as they demand only the best subs on their projects. read more

This past spring and summer I got four bids for a somewhat complicated patio project, that is probably better described as a lot of drain work, with a patio and retaining walls as garnish. Don't get me wrong, the pavers and wall look great! It's just that the most extensive part of the job was the more than 140 linear feet of French drain through concrete and rock. Paul explained every part of the project, and started and finished when you said he would! I also appreciated that he believes in working one job at a time. Several years ago I hired Mr. Carty to fix drainage problems around my home in Berkeley. I got several quotes, and found his to make the most sense in terms of work needed, and also to be reasonably priced (other people who came out gave higher estimates, and they felt more work needed to be done - french drains around all sides of the house, etc...). I hired him and he did excellent work! Our moisture problems under the house were solved, and we have had no further problems. Flash forward to today (4 years later). I did not get regular servicing on my sump pump (my fault- I forgot to follow up) and it was not seeming to function correctly (It turned out to be clogged). I called Mr. Carty and he remembered our job and sent his colleague out to our property, who fixed the problem. I have have now scheduled regular maintenance for our sum pump and drain system. This work is also reasonably priced. The most amazing part of the experience is that Mr. Carty took my call on a Sunday afternoon while he was on vacation and sent an email to his colleague to follow-up, which happened within 48 hours.
