This was a big 10-month project that involved coordinating with an architect and multiple engineering disciplines. I hired HHR on a personal recommendation, but also because I could tell that Jason cares first and foremost about doing quality work, and is a straightforward and honest communicator - not always easy to find in a contractor. The house looks great, tons of neighbors walking by keep telling me so, so it's not just my opinion - but also, several neighbors have commented on how nice and friendly Jason's crews are. That was my experience too, if you hire this company most or all of the work will be done by employees who - as best I can tell - like their jobs and the owner. HHR returned to complete a beautiful renovation on our second floor just two years after the first floor (reviewed in July 2024). Jason again coordinated the planning and permit process seamlessly and also worked with the City of Alameda to upgrade the electrical service to our house. They created a stunningly beautiful total remodel of the guest bathroom with new bathtub, gorgeous tile work and perfect installation of new vanity, fixtures, grab bars, lighting. There was excellent timing of the many stages of construction, with a smooth daily sequence of the teams of highly skilled and professional electricians,plumbers, carpenters and painters. We always received excellent communication for the schedule of work. There was hardly ever a weekday without substantial work taking place. All the workers were highly skilled, tremendously helpful, cheerful and professional. It was truly a pleasure to deal with the entire team. With these two renovations, HHR has now totally redone our three bathrooms, installed pocket doors, reconfigured closets, installed new wood flooring, and performed many electrical and lighting improvements. This is the second time we have used this company. This was a much more substantial job, that involved lifting a home and renovating it. They were challenged to keep on schedule after the City permit office delayed some of the work. I will say that Jason treats his people right, which also means he keeps them gainfully employed. So we were competing with other projects after that delay because he had to move them to the next thing for a bit. Most of the change orders were at our request or approval, and his team does generally high quality work. Contractors can be tough, it always gets more expensive, and it always runs long. But with that said, I felt really good about Jason's crew, and felt like THEY felt good about their boss, which is super important for us. We felt that his whole team was generally quite responsive and helpful when we had problems. It's always a good idea to get multiple bids, but we found these folks to be fairly priced compared with others. read more

If you are looking to renovate your house in the east bay, there's no team better suited for this work than these guys. My grandparents passed away and left me with their home built in 1929 which was quite hoarded and nothing in this house was up to code. As a first-time property owner, I had never taken on or dreamed of taking on a project of this scale - it was daunting and terrifying. I had met with contractors that others had recommended but ultimately chose to go with Jason and the HHR team that I found on Yelp because, from our first meeting, Jason was kind, respectful, and insightful - he didn't judge the crowded spaces or shy from the sizeable undertaking this project would be. He met my apprehension and overwhelm with calm confidence and pragmatism. Jason: - was incredibly communicative and transparent throughout the whole process - was timely to all our weekly check-ins (either virtual or in-person) - perfectly timed out when I needed to order/attain various appliances and parts for my house (no easy feat when we were faced with global supply chain issues) - talked me through any necessary changes that cropped up as the renovation was underway - he explained why some changes were recommended/optional and broke down the necessary fees attached but still gave me the autonomy to make my own decision without pressuring me - restored my faith in contractors (The poor guy had to put up with my swift distrust of contractors that I had developed from my other experiences with contractors - there was some real trauma there. These guys are the just friendliest and kindest contractors I have ever met. Each crew - the carpenters, electricians, plumbers, painters, etc. - were all hands-down incredible and knowledgable. This project took place in the midst of crazy global supply chain issues and a pandemic and yet this project was inconceivably timely. These guys gutted and redid both of my bathrooms and my kitchen, reframed parts of both up and downstairs, replaced my windows, added insulation, redid the entire plumbing and electrical systems, removed my ancient heating system and replaced it with zoned central heating and cooling, replaced my plaster walls with drywall, repainted everything inside and out, AND built a deck with an ADA ramp in the backyard. They did this all in 6 months - it would have been done in 4 except that we had to wait an additional 2 months to replace a vendor botched vanity top (cough - Ashby Lumber). I honestly and truly cannot recommend this company enough. I feel so lucky to have found this team and feel like I've made genuine friendships with Jason and his family. We had an old, unfinished utility space downstairs with a water heater, furnace, and concrete floors, and the team helped us turn it into a full laundry room and bathroom. With the renovation we also added new heat pump and new water heater, and poured new concrete stairs to replace the old ones, which were unsafe. They made a bunch of other small quality-of-life improvements along the way too. Communication was great throughout and we always felt like we were in good hands. There are no words to express my gratitude for Jason and his entire team. I asked HHR to remodel 3 bathrooms in my parent's 100 year-old home in Oakland in order to make it suitable for them to return from their stay in assisted living. What I though would be a 3 bathroom renovation turned into a full-on overhaul of everything from the electrical system to the foundation of the house. The list of what HHR had to do is too long to list here, so I'll just say this: -Jason is brilliant, kind, detailed, empathetic, patient, highly-skilled, a solid leader, transparent, realistic, honest, and professional. - As a Black man, I appreciated the humanity, respect, and responsiveness of the whole HHR team. At no point did I feel like I was being slighted, undervalued, or underestimated in our dealings. Given the vulnerability that was felt on my end, this was incredibly important to me- and it appeared effortless on their part. - It was COVID and new problems kept popping up. Jason and I met every week via zoom or in person to go over the progress from the previous week and any new issues that had emerged. With each issue, he would present a variety of options that ranged in cost and difficulty. We went with whatever I chose and he gave his honest input to help me land on the best plan. - All costs were discussed before each step- including the division of labor between HHR and myself (buying certain materials). All agreements on each step were typed up in work orders for my review before actions would be taken. Any changes would be discussed with me ahead of time and an addendum to the previous work order would be sent to me for my review and approval as well- Stellar. - And when financing delays or difficulties were had on my end, HHR and I stayed in communication and we worked out adjusted timelines and discussed potential avenues for additional resources. The whole time (14 months or so with delays on my end), Jason and his team were the best part of my experience dealing with my parents' health issues and the daunting task of moving them back home. This task was literally the most intimidating project I have ever undertaken (and I am a former high school principal), but Jason and his team made for excellent partners throughout the journey. Without question, Home Healing Renovations made my promise to my father to get him back to his home a reality. And I have video of my parents' joy as they reunited with their neighbors and walked back into the only house they have ever owned since 1974. My husband and I worked with Home Healing Renovations in summer 2019 for a tricky job involving the replacement of some old, weather-worn siding in an 1890s-era house that could only be accessed from another property (a pitfall of tiny lots in Berkeley), in combination with upgrades to enhance the usability of an unimproved, third-story attic. We had talked with some previous contractors about the siding situation, with disappointing results. Instead, even in our first meeting with Jason and team, it was clear that Jason understood the situation, recognized our prioritization in terms of siding repair (essential) versus attic enhancement (would be nice), and enjoyed the challenge of how best to approach the situation. Throughout the design and permitting process, communicating with Jason and team was a breeze. We also worked out ways to seamlessly integrate some miscellaneous jobs that needed attention, like installation of a seismic gas shut-off valve. Whenever we discovered surprises, like a random asbestos-coated pipe in the attic or nonstandard stud spacing, Jason and team let us know promptly and clearly and worked with us to find the best solution. The work was carried out promptly, well, and transparently. Several months later, we remain completely satisfied with the work, and have recommended Home Healing Renovations to others. A review 3 years in the making. But first, some back story. My background: A computer geek totally not experienced in the way of construction or DIY. Even when it comes to grout or caulking, I hesitate... Demolition, that I'll do. Project: a 2 bed, 1 bath 1077 square foot SFR located in Central Berkeley. Project Work: Full renovation. Removal/repair of extensive dry rot, full interior remodel, roofing, electrical, plumbing, etc. Project Cost (including materials, interior finishes): Too much to say. More than $200K. Project Start: November 2015 (after permit approvals) Move in: August 2016 Overall summary: I would work with Jason and his crew again. But I believe with any contractor or extensive remodel, you cannot be hands off and need to make sure the project is progressing in the direction you want. Thank you Jason and team for working with me on our very first home and remodeling project! Overall pros: - Jason was willing to listen and adapt to changes and feedback during the renovation process (with a change order, of course). For example, I discovered a different way of doing parapet walls with an IB roof, and he communicated that information to the roofer so that we could avoid those ugly metal flashings on the top of our parapet walls. - In looking back on the renovation, I feel that Jason was very patient and understanding of my concerns, given my lack of knowledge in this field. I was very nitpicky about things (see below cons) and he and his crew did what they could to address whatever I brought to their attention. - This year (2018), we had a few issues regarding a leak in the shower. Jason immediately came over to assess the situation with the plumber. I appreciated their prompt response to my concerns. Overall, a few cons during the renovation: - I never got my seismic retrofit transfer tax sorted out. I did want HHR to take care of the paperwork, but was kind of told at the time they didn't really do that. At the end of the project, I let that slip and never followed up. Perhaps my architect or engineer was the right point of contact in this regard? - There were a few quality control issues, such as wavy drywall in some areas, incorrect color paints, and a few off measurements on framing which I caught and brought to Jason's attention. Jason and his crew, however, were very receptive of the feedback and addressed all issues. - Communication at times slipped. They were going through changes in email providers and also staffing when we started the project, which caused a few hiccups. read more

Jason worked with me on a major bathroom remodel (tear everything out including the walls, and start over). He was patient and creative with the quote, suggesting some nice touches that I hadn't thought of. If it weren't for Home Healing, Jason, and his stellar team, I wouldn't be living in a habitable house right now. My renovation was practically a complete do-over (with the exception of the foundation) of a house that had not been updated since the 1950s - demo, gutting the whole interior, repurposing rooms, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, major structural changes, you name it. Jason and his team worked on a major project for a fixer that we bought in North Berkeley. We asked him to lift the house, excavate and replace the foundation/slab as well as perform a seismic retrofit in preparation for converting a basement into livable space. The HHR crew was extremely professional, bids were well documented, the work was completed in the time allotted and the tradesmanship was expert. As with everything, there are some things to keep in mind when working with Jason and team, especially on a major project: 1 - Have ALL of your permits in order and approved 2 - Ensure your plans have the proper detail 3 - Build a relationship with whomever is actually doing the work on the ground. Jason is a busy dude and so are the folks in the office. While they're responsive, it's sometimes more efficient to talk to the tradespeople on site so long as it's within the scope of the project 4 - If you can, attend any inspections personally so that you can at least hear what's going on and be available if the inspector asks questions that the tradesperson is unable to answer regarding your needs as the homeowner 5 - Be flexible. Sometimes HHR needs to reschedule a meeting. To me, that's not a big deal considering how they respond quickly to the various and inevitable curveballs that I throw at them. Jason and his crew are wonderful! We purchased our home in Berkeley in March 2014. We met with Jason and some other contractors during our inspection period, and we found that he was very reasonably priced. We were also eager to get the renovations going as quickly as possible after we closed, and he certainly delivered! We closed on March 18th and he was in here with his guys on March 20th doing demolition. The renovations included going down to the studs in most of the house, gutting our kitchen, adding a new bathroom, refinishing the floors, painting, and retrofitting. Most people we knew warned us that the work would take far longer than Jason guaranteed, but Jason was able to stick to a pretty aggressive timeline. Jason was at our house at the beginning and end of the project, and he was very responsive to questions we had throughout the process. The foreman, Aldo, was AMAZING. He worked with us to design and build the built-in nook we wanted in our kitchen (I am attaching the photo), he reached out for input when necessary, and he was super a warm and kind person with our entire family. He went out of his way to help us and go above and beyond. Alexis was also really helpful. We found some sub-contractors (e.g., windows, electrician) on our own to save money. She didn't have to help us, but she wound up helping us find an exterminator when the one we had initially decided on fell through. We moved into our home after the renovations and called Jason again in early 2015 to help us renovate our sunroom (a room attached to the kitchen, adjacent to the yard). It was again a great experience and we are very pleased with the results. Jason also provides a one year warranty on all his work and is extremely responsive when there is an issue. For example, we had an issue with some paint chipping at the corners of the renovated sunroom. He emailed us back immediately and sent his guys over within a week or so to take care of it. Jason is absolutely the first person I reach for when I need contracting work done. I can wholeheartedly vouch that he is an outstanding person as I have known him socially for several years. Based on this trust I was able to leave keys to my home in his hands and everything was handled while I traveled: a french drain was installed, they documented the work with photos to show me the progress (also so that I could report back to the condo association). To save me money, Jason worked with my landscaper who came in to remedy a prior mistake. My request definitely complicated Jason's work and I appreciated his flexibility. Further pluses: -He charged me exactly what he quoted -The work was done punctually -Jason is a clear communicator -They cleaned up afterwards, including the inside of my home which they had to pass through with all tools and supplies to reach the garden. -My home was infrared tested after the work was done and no dampness was found. After being really excited about this company to build an in law house, and confirming that my home town of San Leandro was within their service area, booking an appointment, and scheduling time off of work, I got a voicemail from Mario "oh, hey, yeah, we don't do San Leandro, so, ah, we aren't coming." Ok. No problem. I'll take my money elsewhere. But you should train your staff on your service area and maybe consider flaking out right away and not the day before the appointment. These guys looked awesome, but, apparently they are Berkeley only. Be warned. OR they looked at my humble address and decided I wasn't worth the trouble. Either way, poorly handled. Jason was extremely patient and thorough in helping us fix a pretty hairy mold/water damage issue in our new house. It did take us a while to find the source of the leak, but he was eventually able to conclusively locate it and ensure that it didn't happen again. In addition, all of his work (roof, drywall, lighting, floors) was of the highest quality, and when completed everything was very clean. On top of that, he went out of his way to communicate and keep us in the loop as far as where the work was at each phase as well as scheduling the next. We contacted Jason to have some seismic retrofit work done on our house, and we've been extremely happy with the quality of the work and the responsiveness of Jason, Aldo, and the crew. Jason took care of contacting and working with a seismic engineer, and gave us a number of options. In the end, they strengthened the garage door opening with a steel strongwall, added a shearwall, tied the house to the foundation, replaced some pylons under the house, and re-poured part of the foundation. They also brought in an overhead door company to replace the garage door. Jason was responsive and kept us up to date with the permitting and inspection schedule, and met our admittedly tight deadline before we left for a roadtrip. Aldo texted me during the day if decisions were needed, and answered questions by email also; I really appreciated this. He also went out of his way to investigate an outdoor electrical box that was giving us trouble, even though it had nothing to do with their work. I highly recommend them, and we'll be using them again very soon to add an external door to our house. read more

Forget any nightmare stories you've heard about contractors. These folks are gold. So, a cheap-ass bathroom remodel by the previous owners of our house resulted in water leaking into the floor of the bathroom and showing up as a big soggy crack in the ceiling of the living room. Jason and crew took an incremental approach to the problem to try and avoid expensive stuff like retiling the bathroom unless it was needed. They isolated where the water was, got it dried, redid the formerly badly sealed shower (and they did have to redo some tiles but not all). They stuck exactly to their estimate: we wound up paying a little over $4,000 for the whole job, which we felt was well worth it for the quality of the work, and was less than a water damage removal specialty company would have cost us (the water damage people would have charged us just a little less than $4,000 just to rip apart the whole bathroom and get the water out. Retiling would have added a couple grand to that.) There were a couple of small extra things that they discovered needed doing (the shower door was improperly installed, eg.) and they just fixed them at no extra charge. They also stayed within their estimated time. In fact, they gave a date by which the work would absolutely be done but they finished four days earlier than that. The work seems to be of the highest quality. They fixed the living room ceiling so that you can't even tell a repair has been made unless you know exactly where to look. The shower is well sealed ("bullet proof" as they put it) and nicely retiled. They left the house spotless at the end of each work day. I also appreciated that the crew (Aldo and Esteban one day, Aldo and Jose the other days) were really nice people. It was a pleasure to have them in our house. Their energy was gentle and respectful and they were interesting to talk to. They showed up right on time each day and took obvious pride in doing a great job. We absolutely have our go-to people for any contract work we need done! read more

Jason completed a remodel that I was doing in my basement. The job was to take out some acoustic tile, wood paneling, and 1970's fluorescent lights and installing sheet rock on the walls and ceilings with recessed lighting. From all of the contractors that I met for my project, Jason was the most professional, and his prices were very competitive. After our initial meeting, Jason, promptly provided an itemized quote that was exactly what we discussed. Of equal importance they finished the work on time and within budget. I don't expect it, but if I come across any workmanship problems in the future, I will feel comfortable calling Jason to get effective resolution. After renovations with a contractor we were very unhappy with, we interviewed a lot of contractors for our new project. We chose Home Healing Renovations because they were communicative, professional, and Jason was personable. The crew was with us for a little under 2 months while we lived in the house. They kept the outside as clean and tidy and we gave us daily updates before they left each day. We were in regular communication with Jason and received invoices for all material and work. Upon completion, they left no evidence they were there. They were working a project down the street and my kids and I like seeing them on our walk to school each morning. I had a terrible experience with Jason and his crew. I was consistently given a run around regarding price and quality. He wanted to charge me $1500 to shim a counter which he than back tracked on when I asked him to show me what he was talking about. The crew had to come back to remedy poor work multiple times. The Dishwasher fell out of the wall, the floors weren't finished under the appliances. Seriously. The tape on the floor ripped up my old hardwood floors. At one point he called me on the phone to tell me that I had to rip out my kitchen cabinets, even though I love them and they are healthy, and then said that I had to do all the measurements myself and order the new ones ready to be installed by Monday. His condescending and vaguely hostile attitude did not change until my butch neighbor (I'm a single mom) with construction experience called and talk to him, where upon he totally back tracked about the cabinets. I never write bad yelp reviews. This totally sucked for the the amount of money I spent. Never again. read more

I did have Jason and his team back to remodel my kitchen and they did a fantastic job. They started the job earlier than expected, which was great, and of course, ran into the problems you see on all the HGTV shows. Due to this, my budget was blown, but at least the problems shouldn't affect me later. He and his team worked with me to get the job done in 2.5 months which was great. My only complaint, which I told him, was that he didn't estimate certain things, such as counter fabrication. So when you work with them, just make sure you ask him how much things may cost if it's not in the estimate. That way you're not surprised later on.
