Our local barbecue place was out of brisket, so we decided to make the drive out here after seeing this spot on social media. I'm so glad we did! This place was absolutely great. They had fantastic live music and a fresh, inviting atmosphere inside a beautifully rustic location. While the prices were a little steep, it was entirely worth it. Their unique, house-made barbecue sauces tasted incredible--I especially loved the red BBQ sauce. On top of that, they are one of the only places around that serves cheesy potatoes, and honestly, that side dish alone will keep me coming back! The service was also top-notch; our table was consistently cleared of finished dishes throughout the meal. My only suggestion for improvement would be to add a garden salad or some kind of vegetable option as a side choice. I had the Chopped BBQ salad, which was very good & I chose Chipotle Ranch for my dressing. A good kick with delicious flavor & perfect on any salad. The salad is huge & very good! I can't pick which one I liked best bc they were all equally amazing. The sauces that you ca pick were amazing, mild to hot. Flavorful juicy meats that you'll be thinking of when you leave. That said, dining options are limited out this way, and when you stack it up against what else is available nearby, this place is one of the better choices. I have never seen a bbq restaurant that didn't have wet wipes available. I really hoped that when the new owners came in they would improve things over Filly's. They didn't. My wife's food wasn't any better. $13 for a sandwich with very little turkey felt like I was getting my pocket picked. Parking is what sets the immediate impression of a location, and this location has a parking lot with impressive views of the Superstition Mountains. No issues parking on a Saturday afternoon. I knew it had great views and decent parking as this location was the previous town favorite - Filly's. I hadn't been to Filly's in decades as I wasn't a fan of the food personally, so I was excited to try a new concept here. Especially since I read MasterChef Champion Chef Shaun led this kitchen as he was one of my favorite contestants through the seasons as he had a drive and passion for the art of food. When you enter, it is an order at a counter and take a number type of restaurant concept. Definitely prefer a traditional restaurant, but I know with barbecue, this is a common way to serve. A perk of this style is the ability to refill your soda without waiting for a server to do so. Since it is this style, they have condiments, pickles, and other items as a serve yourself with bottles you can take to your seat or to-go containers. Like any new establishment I try, I have to do a flight of all the sauces to rank. Four Sauce Choices: - Dutchman's Original (favorite) - Dutchman's Gold (third, but not a gold BBQ sauce fan) - Superstition Red (least - watery) - S&S Chipotle (second) Sometimes you can't beat the original, but it's always nice to have choices! For the meat options, I got the JW's meat sampler plate ($30) so we can try the different meats with sides with my boyfriend getting a pulled pork sandwich. Who gets turkey at a BBQ? Well, I would absolutely here as it's the best turkey breast I've ever had! It was so moist and had a great flavor, and the brisket was also fantastic! I rarely eat pork, but tried the other items. Loved the hatch chile & jack cheese sausage, which was a surprise as well! The ribs were fall-off-the-bone type, which I love but my boyfriend prefers something to gnaw on. Since I'm always right, they are phenomenal here. ;-) For sides, we tried Arizona Elote, BBQ Baked Beans, and Jalapeño + Chipotle Gouda Mac. BBQ Baked Beans were more like ranch-style beans, which I wasn't a fan of and would skip when returning. The Mac was pretty good, but not a creamy Mac n Cheese if that's what you prefer. The elote is more like elote en vaso, but still had a great flavor. We both did say we'd love it on the cob. They have sinks if you get messy, so a real elote would be fantastic at the table in my opinion. Lastly, my plate came with the cornbread which I wasn't a huge fan of. I'm usually a honey cornbread person, but it appears they added jalapeño which I don't like mixing in a cornbread personally. In contrast, my boyfriend thought it was too sweet for a jalapeño cornbread. Perhaps since this location is new, they are experimenting on "the" cornbread recipe, so I'd try again. Overall, both the meat items and the side dishes were a success! I would say 4.5/5 Stars, so with the stunning Superstition Mountains, Dutchman's Country BBQ gets a 5-Star Yelp review in my book! One Star??? If I was to base this review on my first encounter with the first person - whom was a much older lady taking the orders, I think her name was Tara, I would definitely give this place a one star. I'm not sure what her rush was to get me and my friend to order, as we were the only two people in line and the restaurant was 98% empty, as you'll see in the pictures. I was SOOOO disappointed even after telling her it was our first time, the lady didn't even allow us to put in our information at the end of the transaction for the Rewards program or an email list or anything that they have???!!! I still don't know anything about it because she didn't give us a chance. I thought it would've been nice to know of new menu items since they have a limited menu??? The information portion just popped on the screen and the lady quickly skipped over it. They should REALLY consider another person to be the face of Customer Service --- CS skills are really much needed! I think her behavior was really strange, off-putting, she was so preoccupied looking around, it was inconsiderate, rude and weird. We ended up sitting in the bar and luckily the cornbread was the first thing I tried and it was deliciously moist with a light crust top of honey. I tried the pulled pork sandwich and was not disappointed, it had so much moisture. The portion was really nice. The sandwich overall was definitely a five and the coleslaw placed on-top was also a five; highly recommend that!!! The side of macaroni was ok - slightly spicy, with a thin cheese sauce, although I prefer a cheesy, thicker sauce myself, with a pasta less overcooked. Here's a tip ~ be sure to grab some napkins and put water on them cause I didn't see any wet naps anywhere. Sauces: Superstition Red - A sweet-and-sour sauce type very watery, but had a mild flavor, not spicy. S & S Chipotle - sauce is definitely on the spicier side. I did really like it. Very tasty. The Dutchman's gold sauce, tangy kind of a vinegar based, savory, my favorite. Dutchman's Original - a traditional bbq, not overly sweetened! Barbie (pictured) was in the spacious bar and she was so nice to visit our table. We had a quick chat she mentioned about live music they host. Eddy (girl) was also very friendly to visit our table and took care of us. The pecan pie was extremely sugary and very hard. The buttercream whipped topping was melted, but the pie was cold so that was a little confusing, of course I wanted it to look like the picture, but it clearly did not. Tip ~ If you don't like the taste of butter on your pie then I would definitely skip that. I love pecan pie myself, therefore wanting to try it, I'm not sure why the topping was melted and the pie was so hard? Sadly, I'm guessing they were both very old, definitely Not fresh. Sharing of course My Friend was most definitely not a fan. There's plenty of space, much of the restaurant was empty and the decor is very pretty and rustic! There's a huge outside sitting area with very warm heaters and fire!!! I'm not sure why I tipped, hopefully it goes to Eddy (she served our table) and NOT the front counter older lady taking orders. Well, I asked a bunch of friends if they wanted to go out to dinner tonight and somebody suggested Dutchmans BBQ and I've always wanted to go out and try their food cause everybody says it's so good But they were wrong. I had the JW's sampler platter and I was very disappointed. The turkey was OK. The brisket was dry the ribs both ribs were dry I guess they were OK but I would never order them again. The pulled pork was OK kind of dry. The sausage never would order that again. the cornbread was delicious. Don't plan on coming back. We got the JW's meat sampler, hatch & Gouda Mac n cheese, corn bread, Arizona Elote, Green Apple & poblano coleslaw, smoked brisket chili. The brisket was a bit dry. The turkey breast and sausage were juicy and tender. The ribs were very caramelized and dark, but not fall off the bone tender. Pulled pork was ok. The sides were all good. We've been to Dutchman's several times now, and the food is outstanding! It is excellent BBQ, from the pulled pork sandwich to the brisket, to the chicken tenders for our son. The variety of sauces is great, including the Dutchman's Gold for pork! The amount of food for the price is a good value. You can get cheaper food, but it's just cheaper food. We loved this barbecue spot! We ordered the tacos and the brisket sandwich, and everything we tried was full of amazing flavor. All of the homemade barbecue sauces inside were incredible and really made the meal. If you go, try to time it around sunset and sit on the patio -- the view of the Superstition Mountains is absolutely beautiful and makes the whole experience even better. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and kept the place clean, which we really appreciated. The only downside for us was the cheesy potato side. It was a bit mushy and lacked flavor compared to everything else. We also would've loved more fried jalapeños on the sandwich and a little more meat on the tacos. That said, the flavor, pairings, and overall quality of what we did get were fantastic. Overall, definitely worth visiting. Great food, great atmosphere, and an unforgettable view! read more

We were really excited to try this place after watching the construction and waiting for it to open. The building itself is beautiful, and the views are amazing, they clearly put a lot of thought into the space. Unfortunately, the food was a major letdown. When they first opened it looks like they had some BBQ combo plates, however, the menu has changed to more a la carte. The portions were shockingly small, so small that we honestly thought our order had been made incorrectly at first. For a BBQ restaurant, the portion size just didn't come close to matching the price. It was disappointing. The brisket was 2 small slices, sides were each less than a 1/2 cup each, soda machines were all out of ice and the condiment bar was almost empty. We truly don't want to see a new business in this area struggle or fail, and we hope they're able to improve because the location and concept have so much potential. That said, we simply can't justify paying those prices for that amount of food. We left hungry and ended up down the street at another BBQ that has huge portions but limited seating (iykyk). We really hope they take feedback like this seriously and make adjustments, we'd love a reason to come back. read more

Tonight my sister and I had dinner at the Dutchman Country BBQ for the first time. When I walked in there was sweet young girl at the front. She was so helpful and I let her I know I was waiting for my sister to arrive. She offered me a menu to review as I waited. I really appreciate that as it allowed me to time to see the menu in its fullness. When we were ready to order, we were helped by Tara. She took my order but didn't seem to focused on helping us at the counter. Was disappointed After paying we could seat ourselves, it was very spacious and we could sit inside or outside at the bon fire area. It was cold, so we sat inside in the bar area. In the bar area where we sat, they had old soft rock music on the tv playing. Not too bad and not too loud, which was great! I did capture a picture of the smokers , Fat Jacob and Little Filly. Great to see an employee getting food from there hoping it was mine . Lol I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and jalapeño Mac and cheese. It came out fast. It was really good. I also had their lemonade, which was good and not too sweet. I would say my overall experience was good. Best employees there tonight were Barbie and Eddy in the bar area. So helpful and really showing great customer service. As well as the young girl in the front when I first went in. Tara not so much. Barbie did say they even have live bands on Thursday- Sunday at certain times. I'd like to go back and see the band. Needs a lot of refinement. The reviews here are overwhelming positive with regard to the bbq. The majority of them also mention the service being slow and the location frequently being out of different dishes. I've got to say those reviews are 100% on point. We got there at noon, and they were already out of about half their meats. They are nice enough to list the stuff they are out of on a menu board by the front door, but when we got to the counter to order they were out of several other appetizers that weren't listed on the board. You've got to move fast here if you want something specific because they sell out at the speed of light. This is a good thing though because it means people really like their food. The takeaway from this is that they are newly opened, and are still working the kinks out. I don't think they were prepared for how popular or busy they would be, and are working to adjust their business to it. It's got to be tough doing bbq, because you don't want to do too little but on the other hand you definitely don't want to be left with a bunch of bbq at the end of the day. Still, running out of half of the items on your menu by noon on a Saturday doesn't exactly scream self confidence. Even with their being out of so many things, the wait was still crazy bad. They definitely need to hire more people, as after placing our order we literally waited forty minutes before the food showed up. Unfortunately the food just didn't do it for me either. It wasn't terrible. It just wasn't special. Maybe it's because they didn't have what I had set my heart on, or maybe it was just the price gave me the impression that the food was going to knock my socks off. Unfortunately it just didn't do it for me on a lot of different levels. There are plenty of choices in the valley, but maybe not so many in Apache Junction which is why this place is such a big hit. We live in Mesa and we're in the area a couple of weeks ago before it had opened for the day so last night we made the quick split decision to come in for dinner and I'm actually glad that we did. It was a Tuesday and the place was packed with people it was an older crowd which works great for me .There's indoor / outdoor seating the outside area is big enough to hold a smaller stage for live music and there's an area outdoors that has warm firepits to sit next to on a cold night. Now how you order is you walk in and get in line to order your food and a server will bring it out to you. There's a condiments area where you can get your utensils, sauces, pickles, jalapeños and pickled onion. The BBQ here is a Carolina style BBQ different from what i'm use to but it was good. My favorite out of our 5 meat sampler was the ribs by far they were seasoned perfectly so that you don't need the extra sauce. Now my least favorite was the turkey and sausage very dry and lacked flavor. The brisket was fatty but all in all it wasn't a bad experience. This place has a full bar with t.v.s domestic beers run $6.50 each. There's lots of parking in the back it's a quaint hidden gem that everyone should check out. Kinda off the beaten path but worth the extra trip, just go ahead and plan to bring the family and explore the superstition areas. The lady at the counter was quite helpful, I got their sample plate and added some banana pudding because it'd be a sin not to. It came with pulled pork, ribs, hatch chili and cheese sausage, smoked turkey, and both the flat and point of the brisket. I got to say I was impressed. The sausage was great, had that Smoky hatch goodness, the pulled pork was moist and flavorful, the ribs were also very tasty. The standouts were the turkey and brisket. For the brisket, the flat was perfect and tender and the point... that fat cap was nice and packed with a ton of flavor. The turkey had to be the best I've had, it was moist and tender and tasted amazing. I could tell there was good penetration of a brine (I'm guessing). I would love to find out if they smoke turkey for holidays, It's work and family worthy. Lastly, the banana pudding was delicious, it had a light creamy feel that isn't too sweet. This paired well with the large amount of meat my fat a$$ ate. Overall, this is an amazing place to get great bbq and amazing views. Third time here, I was very disappointed. Loaded potato was not cooked through, but a little hard at the core. I chose brisket for the potato--there were at least 3 globs of fat, especially for the amount of meat; I found that so gross!! And the fat from the brisket had kind of melted into the potato. My husband didn't want his Cole slaw ; I tried it--like eating mayo with no real flavor besides, and equal parts cabbage: mayo. I got the chile last time; it was pretty good. read more

Dutchman's BBQ is doing a lot of things right, starting with the fact that our table went quiet once the food arrived. Always a good sign. I ordered the pork tacos and the flavor was outstanding. Smoky, rich, and clearly made by someone who respects pork. I loved the sweet bits of pineapple in them. They were a little greasy, but not in a deal breaker way. More like a grab an extra napkin and keep going situation. The service deserves a real shoutout. It felt intentional, thoughtful, and genuinely welcoming. Orders were handled smoothly for our group of seven, timing was solid, and no one made us feel rushed or forgotten. That kind of service matters, especially with a big table. The self-serve BBQ sauce bar is dangerous in the best way. Housemade pickles, onions, and sauces invite curiosity instead of collecting dust. I went back more times than I planned. I also had the rosemary blueberry gin cocktail and it was beautifully balanced. Not too sweet, not too herbal, just really well done. BBQ and cocktails do not always get along, but this one absolutely worked. The only challenge was the noise level inside. The music was loud enough to make conversation tricky. The outdoor area with the fire pits and heaters looked amazing, but it was completely full. A few more outdoor spots would make a big difference. All that said, I would absolutely go back.
