Great venue with interesting history. Dust cutter is a term cowboys used for places they would stop at to get food and drink from their journeys, cutting the dust they collected from road. The space was well designed and I enjoyed seeing the railroad wood installed in the ceiling. The menu and selection was delectable, but limited. We came by last night for one drink and had bad service and then noticed a batch of fruit flies in the corner by us so we left up to our room. Today, we sat at the bar and again noticed a few fruit flies around the bar and again moved on with our drinks. Can you have a 5 star Yelp rating at a hotel lobby restaurant and bar? I did not think so until I ate at the Dust Cutter. It is inside the Renaissance in downtown Phoenix. It was a convenience stop at first, since it was almost 9:00pm and it was just easier to grab a drink and something to eat in the lobby. It turned out great. They have a nice selection of local beers, actually make handmade crafted cocktails (and make them well) and have a decent menu. I can personally vouch for the salmon and the urban cowboy burger. The fries were a little "meh" but other than that, you cannot go wrong. I ate there twice, one lunch and one dinner in a 4 day trip. Came here late last night after the Elton John concert and boy was there a crowd. We managed to find an open table in the corner and ended our night in a really relaxed way. Ambiance: this is a hotel bar where you'll find both casual and dressed up folk. Chances are that you'll be just fine showing up as you are. This is Phoenix after all! The people watching as always, was on point. Food: we got the hummus and haboob fries. We scarfed everything down, but the food could have been improved. The crackers that came with the hummus were thin and broke really easily as we were dipping. The haboob fries were well seasoned, but we definitely got the end batch with some pretty tiny and very crunchy pieces. Presentation was good though. Service: service was pretty good, but our waitress didn't give us serving utensils or napkins, so that was a little odd. She was friendly though, so that was appreciated. We were sitting close to the device booth so we were able to help ourselves to some cutlery. Drinks: we had wine by the glass, beers by the pint, and an old fashioned. All was good. Love the space here, another in a list of hotel bars we tried during a recent trip to Phoenix. We had the Coffin and the Dust Cutter cocktails and were pleased with the taste, but the service was the main winner here. And the cocktail prices were a little more reasonable than other spots (I.e. $15 instead of $17 or $18). This is going to be a biased review because I am definitely a loyal Marriott user and the Renaissance is my favorite hotel in the portfolio. It's because the service and the amenities are so good! The Dust Cutter is the restaurant for the downtown Renaissance, and the service and food did not disappoint. My friend and I went for drinks and apps after a show at the Symphony Hall on a Sunday. We were originally going to Hanny's across the street, but it had a 30 minute wait and there isn't outdoor seating. Dust Cutter had no line, and they had garage doors up. I'm so glad we decided to check out a new restaurant. The vibe was great. Decor was great. Bathrooms are so lovely. It was pretty quiet evening, and the bartender and single server (unfortunately, I have forgotten her name) was able to work the entire room well. My friend is not a drinker, so she had the bartender make her a mocktail, and she loved it. Tip: if you don't know what to get and you're ever in a good cocktail bar, just tell the bartender to surprise you. It has always worked out well. Every time. For food, we ordered the Sonoran Sunshine salad, the "popcorn fungo en fuego", and the Harvest Hummus. It was all great. Each dish had lots of interesting flavors working together. Was staying at the Renaissance and came in for lunch. I wasn't expecting much but the service and the food were both top notch. We got some of the brisket tacos and they were great. A good sweet bbq flavor to them, the brisket was coooked well without being overly fatty and had a nice little rub to it as well. Service was great - food came out quickly and our server even offered to go get starbucks for one of my colleagues. It was so nice of her as they didn't offer coffee. I had a work gathering here at the Dust Cutter at the Renaissance hotel and just a great atmosphere and plenty of wide open space , They were able to open all the walls so that it's nice and airy inside which is always nice , The decor and ambiance was great had plenty of TVs around the bar area to watch the football games and several tables and comfy lounge chairs. Definitely a nice place to stop by and get a drink or bite to eat. We ended up having appetizers like the spring rolls and some type of brisket flat bread which were both excellent as well as a biscuit ham and cheese slider which was another good choice . read more

The Manhattan was a particular favorite for both of us - and my husband never drinks bourbon! Well, it looks like he does now! The bartenders were attentive and each had their own ways to add a little something special to each cocktail, and the pours were quite generous.... so generous that we were grateful to have a room :-) Though a bit pricey, Dust Cutter does offer a sweet Happy Hour deal: a selection of the appetizers are half price for a few hours. We tried the DC Nachos with smoked brisket - the Avocado Crema really set them apart! Again, little twists that make the usual into something unique and unexpected. We went during happy hour before going to a show and had a nice time. Dark, classy, welcoming interior, similar to the bar area in most nicer hotels. Our server was friendly. Maybe even too chatty, but it was sincere, and she was happy and nice. I still thought she deserved a generous tip. Our food and drinks were tasty, and it was good pricing for downtown (happy hour pricing). I subtracted a star because we were unable to have a flatbread without cheese. I'm assuming they're buying them pre-made then. Instead of sharing two meals, we basically each had to just eat our own because the dairy couldn't be removed, and we didn't know this until the food arrived. Great space - I love the interior decoration of this hotel lobby. The location is fabulous. We're here during Diamondbacks home series v. Dodgers and Suns playoffs, so it becomes a sports bar and hub for the fans. The wings are very good - naked fried, lightly seasoned, served with carrot sticks, celery, ranch and Frank's hot sauce on the side, like I like. The wine list is limited and at $18 a glass, the Sanoma Cutrer is waaaay overpriced. The only alternative Chardonnay however is rock gut! Needs a middle if the road option here. Like a lot of places right now, they are in desperate need of waitstaff, so service was either slow or remedial (a lot of trainees). Phoenix is using though and I like it! read more

I was semi joking when I asked the bartender if the drink, "My Darling, Rhonda", was named after her. To my surprise, the drink is named after her since she has been employed at Marriott for 48 years! She doesn't like the drink but I did. It was not too sweet nor was it too strong with the citrus vodka, kiwi syrup and honey bitters. They make a mean Manhattan and their Old Fashion is made with Makers Mark. They also carry a decent draft collection. Breakfast starts at 6:30am. I was there at 6:30 on Saturday with many other guests and one worker. There was some type of trade show going on, I left at 6:58 without receiving my food. They should probably plan a little better for breakfast when there are events on the weekend, since the lounge is closed on the weekend and those that have lounge access receive breakfast vouchers over the weekend. I enjoyed the five cheese grill sandwich. The fries had a bbq type seasoning on them that gave them a good taste but they were cold, so I didn't enjoy them like I could have.... read more

Unfortunately the kitchen and service are sub par. I had a bland Caesar salad and a chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich was simply not edible. The chicken had an acrid odor to it. I believe it had probably been sitting around for too long. Nobody noticed I didn't eat it or offered another option/or to remove it from the check. There was also an intoxicated, rambling (probably homeless) person sitting next to me. It was for quite a while. Nobody sorted it out and I had to (awkwardly) change seats. The options were good - my group of 3 couldn't decide on dinner so we did the avocado fries, chorizo crisp, pork belly and elote. Everything was excellent except for the pork belly: ours was served cold and very dry like it had been sitting in the back under a heat lamp. I enjoyed Dust Cutter's breakfast twice while staying at the Renaissance hotel, in which this restaurant is based. I have nothing but great things to say about Dust Cutter. Tasty food, an amazing ambience, great music, luxurious design, and great service. I was lucky to be served by Nathan on both occasions - he is awesome. He was very attentive to my needs, polite and friendly, easy to talk to, and efficient. Bottom line, he cares about his customers and pays attention to them. He is the kind of guy that makes sure customers feel good showing up, staying, and upon departure. I hope they give you a raise and/or a promotion Nathan! You deserve one. The food was amazing, I mean how many not-over-used adjectives are left without sounding boring? Their brisket hash was an amazing breakfast dish. It was slightly on the lighter side in terms of flavoring, but that's what salt and pepper is for, right? You can always add, but you can't subtract, so I appreciated this bias in flavoring. Perfect blend of nutrients for a satisfying meal. The coffee and juice refills keep coming, thanks to my man Nathan, so you will never be thirsty. He frequently checks in on you to make sure you don't need anything else. For example, he notices/remembers the small details, like how my guest hasn't made it down before the kitchen closes and so I should place an order for them in time. I maybe mentioned my guest once when I first showed up, and/or he remembered from the morning before. Either way, these are the service elements that matter and make a difference. Their egg omelette is very solid. I would recommend getting sausage, pepper, and spinach, but those are just my personal favorites in an omelette. It came out exactly how I imagined it would - filling, flavorful, and presented well. The pancakes! Holy...I can see this being up for debate, so here are my two cents. They make their pancakes fluffy on the inside and slightly crunchy/crusty on the outside. This is THE BEST in my view. It adds such interesting texture and flavor, not to mention how good it is without adding any syrup and butter, since it comes with powder sugar. Eventually, you'll want to add those things to add dynamic flavor to your dish, but I am a fan of these pancakes. A few additional details: the orange juice is very pulpy, which is how I like it. It tastes very fresh and nutritious. There are tons of screens here, so you can watch golf, football, or whatever else is on. This is a great place to lounge, even if you're not dining. Very comfortable space. You will get a varied crowd here, some business people, probably a good chunk of hotel guests, and locals. At night, it gets lively and exciting. They have happy hour in the afternoon/evening as well. Tldr - awesome dining experience. Nathan is the best. Super comfortable space. read more

Dust Cutter has always had an inviting look. I always wanted to stop by and check it out, and while waiting for a concert nearby at the Van Buren to start, we found ourselves here finally. We walked up to the bar because I didn't recall seeing any hostess stands (unless we somehow missed). We pretty much looked lost until one of the staff just told us to sit anywhere. I chose a spot nestled next to a fireplace. It's not your traditional fireplace. It was sided with glass walls bordering a neat pile of pseudo logs and looked very modern. The tables were made of thick wood. Some tables were short and other bar height. Openness galore with TVs interspersed everywhere so that if any sports event was on, you'd be able to see it... but in a chic way. The menus were already on the table so we just had to wait for a waitress to come take our orders. I kicked of our night with one of their signature cocktails, Snake in my Boot. I really enjoyed this cocktail. It did have a unique taste while surprising you with a spicy warm "bite." Try it! Its base is El Silencio mezcal, which isn't my typical go-to, but I wanted something different. For eats, I had a fajita carñitas bowl. It is reminiscent of a fancier Chipotle fajita bowl. It was good! I would order it again. We also had fried avocado as an appetizer. Since it had to be fried quite a bit on the outside to hold the structure of a soft avocado inside (allowing you to be able to eat it as a finger food like fat fries), it had the appearance of something else not as appetizing, but the flavor and the texture was good. Sure, we'd order this again too. My hubby had the fish tacos as his entrée. Honestly it looked super healthy to me (and thus not as exciting to me), but when given the chance, and I did take a bite, I was pleasantly surprised. I liked it and the black beans side! ...But nah, I would still order the fajita bowl again instead. So come check this place out! Service is ALWAYS slow. Always! Between the 10 of us we almost always get the following items: Chipotle BBQ Chicken sandwich $13 bucks The Chopped Salad $12 bucks The Grilled Spicy Chicken Sandwich $13 bucks B.L.A.T.T. $13 bucks Bistro Burger $13 bucks All sandwiches comes with your choice of Regular Fries, Sweet Potatoes Fries, Side salad or Fruit. The Chipotle Chicken Sandwich has caramelized onions, pineapple pico de gallo, Mexican cheeses. The Chopped Salad has baby romaine greens, Tepary beans, corn, tomatoes, pepitas, cucumber, queso fresco & cilantro-lime vinaigrette.
