My in-laws are regulars here so they naturally made sure we stopped in on our vacation. This place was POPPING Sunday AM; we must've just hit the post-church worship rush because this place was packed and it took way too long to get our food. I'm talking like we placed our order and got it 45min later, insane. I didn't hold it against them though, they were hustling and pumping out the diner faire as fast as possible...they sure do a business. Solid breakfast menu and specials board. Of course that day they were out of avocado that I so wanted to add to my meal, oh well. I landed on the huevos rancheros; husband had eggs/bacon/potatoes/toast; pop-in-law had the eggs benny (special; one with/out green chili hollandaise!); step-mom-in-law had 2 HUGE blueberry pancakes. everything we tried was delicious...I was a bit disappointed with my meal though but everyone else's looked and tasted good!! coffee was refilled repeatedly as was our h2o. I wish the food came quicker, we were getting antsy about it near the end there. oh well, shows that everyone comes here for good food and the big portions! oh and reasonable prices too, 4 peoples food/drink was about $40, woo whoo. not a huge establishment by any means, but I was surprised we walked in and sat down right away...but the wait, ouch. I don't think that's the norm though. check it out for sure for a good meal! oh and ask for extra crispy potatoes, they don't cook them near long enough IMO :) read more

Maybe it was because of the holiday weekend, maybe just not prepared for the rush? I frequently go to the Durango Diner when I'm in town on business. Always have had a good experience. Naturally I thought it would be a good spot to bring the family for some breakfast in an old fashioned diner. How I couldn't have been more wrong. Upon arriving the diner was so packed they sent us to the bar 2 doors down because they serve the same food. We sat patiently waiting for someone to take our order. As we were getting ready to leave 15 min later someone finally came over and gave us menus. Then they came back to take our order. We waited 45 min for them to bring our food. Not once did they ask if we needed drink refills or come check on us. The coffee station was constantly out of coffee. They ran out of what I originally ordered so I had to eat it on a bread I did not order. The green chili was not what I expected, and the huevos rancheros didn't taste that great. We had to also ask for napkins because there weren't any. I understand it was a holiday weekend but that's inexcusable for not having the staff or food to meet the needs of the business. Will I return? It sadly may be time to find a new local joint. read more

Another great Durango find! Our motel suggested this as "the best breakfast in town" so we figured, why not? It's on the main avenue and it's small. Basically a long counter and a couple small booths in the back. Not that that is a problem. We sat at the counter and you can tell it's a place where locals come regularly. Everyone seemed to know each other. But we didn't feel out of place as visitors. I liked that the "kitchen" is right in front of you. We enjoyed watching the rhythm the cook had. Pour batter. Flip bacon. Flip hashbrowns. Flip pancake. Repeat. Our server was friendly. The food came fast. And it was a great breakfast. My bf had the pancake, singular, because they are the size of dinner plates. I had the biscuits and gravy. Let me tell you about that. Just a couple days prior I was saying even though it's my favorite, I never get biscuits and gravy from restaurants because A: the biscuits are usually shitty pillsbury grands biscuits. B: the gravy is often from a package and C: it can't compete with mine. But I saw the biscuits they use and they looked homemade and delicious, so I thought, why not? Let's take a chance. Glad I did! The biscuits were as good as they looked and the gravy was either homemade or the best packaged one I've ever had. I still prefer mine but as far as a restaurant goes, this was great! We came here twice on our four day vacation, so that should tell you something. The first time was for lunch and I had a cheeseburger with fries and a side of green chili. All of it was great! Everything is homemade from the fries to the chili. The second time was for breakfast and I got the corned beef hash. The hash was perfect but I didn't like the hash browns. Maybe too much better but something about them was off. We also got a blueberry pancake (huge) for the table to share and that was amazing. I highly recommend the Durango Diner! Our favorite breakfast joint in Durango, and I mean joint. Don't go here if you want a fine dining experience or are in a hurry. You just stand around until a counter stool or one of a handful of tables opens up. I love hash browns and this place has the best. You can watch the cook grating the potatoes as you order and cooking them golden brown. I usually get eggs, browns and toast. My wife got a veggie omelet that was awesome. Tomatoes, onions, peppers, asparagus, squash and probably something else I'm forgetting. Go here if you want a great breakfast at a great price. read more

One of the few establishments left open from when I lived in Durango 32 years ago. I still maintain they have some of the best blueberry pancakes on the planet earth. Portions are large and the food is fresh. You will probably need to sit at the counter as there are very few tables. We had just arrived in town and were hungry- lucky for us several other restaurants were closed but not the Durango Diner. The closer we walked toward it, the more we could smell it and knew this was a God send!! I orders the huevos rancheros and my husband had the corned beef hash. Huge portions, perfectly cooked, and so delicious. I could have the red chili sauce alone in the biggest bowl available and die happy. Basic food safety was lacking. We watched one of the cooks handle raw sausage and bacon and then grab plates, lettuce, cheese and wrap burritos without doing much more than wiping his hands on his pants. he did this over and over. If you get food poisoning after eating there it wouldn't surprise me. read more

The blueberry hotcakes were really good as was all the dishes I smelled, saw and tasted. There is an item on the menu called "The Cure", this is not named after Robert Smith and Co. A fun diner with mostly-counter seating on stools (love it!) and greasy diner food. E decided this would be just the place after I left Denver this morning at 4 am and drove 5 1/2 hours to get here. We waited a bit - two tables opened up and we could have gotten those, but silly me wanted to sit at the counter for a true diner experience. So glad I did. There's nothing quite like rubbing elbows-literally- with the locals (probably about 95% of the clientele) and having arms thrust in your face because you're sitting in front of the hot sauce and they want it...badly. E got the half and half, two biscuits smothered in both sausage gravy and their famous green chile. I got an egg sunny-side up (look at me, I'm straying farther away from scrambled!!) with a sausage patty, wheat toast, and yummy hashbrowns that I smothered in green chili. Yum. A coronary waiting to happen. It wasn't as cheap as I would have liked, but I was DEFINITELY stuffed and unable to finish. So in the end, I guess I got my money's worth. Gone are the days where a cup of coffee is 10 cents and a plate of food starts at a dollar. Although this place screams of that era, prices have gone up as times have progressed. Service was efficient, although not totally friendly. Of course, the staff was working their asses off busing, cooking, serving, and running food down the street, where they were also serving at another bar. I just found it profoundly intriguing that they cooked the food in the diner and then ran it through the pouring rain down the street. Hmmm. Only in Durango. Can't wait to live here :) read more

My usual go-to for breakfast in Durango is Oscars, but a friend introduced me to the Durango Diner last winter. Much like Oscars, this is a locals kind of place. Nothing fancy and no pretense; just a good old fashioned diner. The Cure is excellent if you are a fan of green chili, but be advised it can feed two. Came here because in really wanted breakfast and apparently Durango has some kind of thing against people trying to get breakfast after 11. We Sat at the counter. The waitresses was adequate. I feel like she was kind of lagging on some things, like bringing us coffee and other stuff. I watched her chat with her friends and eat some chips. The food portions were huge!!!! Great breakfast/lunch spot. We stopped here on a whim and it was a great decision. Staff are super friendly and on point with service. We all really enjoyed our food and service. The country fried steak is HUGE and amazing per my aunt! Hash browns are huge piles of perfectly cooked potatoes and are definitely shareable. I personally had the chef salad that I picked as a last second decision. It was piled high with ham, roast beef, and turkey plus mushrooms, asparagus, and bell peppers. With spinning fans, little bit of smoke in the air, a radio playing next to the grill area, bar stools, the local people and super friendly attentive waitresses making almost continuous rounds with a fresh pot of hot coffee We came for breakfast but ended up opting for a beautiful reuben sandwich with chips and a double cheeseburger with homemade real potato fries. The Reuben was about $10 and well worth it. The double cheeseburger also $10 cooked to perfection at a medium rare. We sat at a table in the back right next to a payphone believe it or not. But pay phone rang occasionally and staff would end answer it and take orders from it. We found it unusual personal to see a payphone second of all that it was a useful pay phone. The only drawback is my husband showed me a picture of the bathroom in the men's bathroom is absolutely disgusting with stains on the tile floor, messed up walls, and a door jamb that is needing repair. Ladies restroom also needs repair on the walls. Kind of a typical old diner with pictures wooden frames on the walls of local people, local landscape and a cork board with advertisements pins to it. I like it! You're not going to find another place like this and that's what makes it special. read more

We arrived and so did most of the town. They were packed. I felt sorry for the lone waitress. Back up did arrive about 1/2 hrs later. I am not sure I would say it was the best diner food I have ever had. Since it was crowded it took a bit for our food. I had huevo Ranchero. The beans were a little on the cool side and a small portion of potatoes compared to the other 5 breakfasts. They serve green or red chili. The green is warm temperature wise and the red comes out of the fridge. So when putting it on your food it cools it off very quickly. Everyone had to ask for bread with their eggs. Again, the server was slammed. I am not sure I would go back for breakfast. It was nothing mind blowing. read more

We had come here in the winter time when we were visiting before and decided to go again. Everything was delicious. I ordered the egg sandwich on a muffin and my husband ordered the egg with ham and hash browns. The hash browns took up half of the plate and he loved them. Best breakfast ever! The hash browns are fresh-grated onto the grill and just the right amount of crispy. The pancakes are huge and fluffy. All the portions are very large. Seating is primarily counter which is friendly and makes for speedy service. There are a few tables at the front and back of the restaurant. Was excited to come here for breakfast as we're about to leave town to head home, but sadly never got a table due to poor management skills. Got there and put our name down at 10:55, was told it would be a 30 minute wait. It was very hot so we decided to walk around a bit and get something to drink. Came back at 11:20 and waited 15 more minutes, just to be told they had called our name "a while ago" and they could put us back on the list (which was now a 45 minute wait.) I understand being busy (I work in a restaurant myself), and the stress around having a waitlist, but at least take peoples numbers to inform them when their table is ready. I heard them tell another group to go walk around for a bit & come back within their expected wait time. Definitely disappointing! read more

3.75 stars for food, 5 stars for being a great, old-school diner. Very friendly staff. Hard working. Massive portions. Grill guy said they go thru 5000 pounds of potatoes/month. Family friendly but any kids should split an order with someone. Maybe adults too. Every dish with yummy hash browns is 1+ potatoes per plate. I got the "cure": eggs, bacon, potato, drowned in chile verde sauce (some have commented on the un-authentic green sauce & they may have a point but I'm not a connoisseur). Pancakes were seriously thick & huge (think full dinner plate). Excellent bacon. Pretty good biscuits. Mediocre coffee-what you would expect from a diner.
