It is a pleasure to walk into Robert and Giovanna 's salon "Duque" and I've done so happily and gratefully now every 2 months for 10 years. Robert cuts and highlights my hair and hits it out of the ballpark every time. When you're aging, what your hair looks like is the difference between looking young, vital and interesting - and being invisible. My blond highlights are weaved throughout my grey and mouse-brown hair- as subtly and skillfully as Renoir painted portraits. Roberts haircuts are always great, giving body and fullness to almost any head of hair. She explained the entire dry cut process and showed me layers of my hair and what she would do as she went through each layer. Duque Salon specializes in "dry cutting", and it is really, really good. I have the type of hair that requires frequent cutting, and I find that a dry cut makes your hair look great all the way through the growth cycle; it grows out a lot better and just seems to last longer. I think this is because the stylist works with dry, straightened hair as a "base" to start with, so there is some built-in accuracy. (My hair is naturally wavy and this apparently works even if your hair is curly.) With my previous stylists, there was often something wrong with my haircuts that I felt I had to "tweak" on my own a day or two afterward. I used to get fed up at paying "good money" to people who did careless work, requiring me to either waste time going back for a fix, or having to fix it myself. Once I experienced dry cutting and saw how great my hair looked, I have stuck with it ever since. Robert and Giovanna are both trained in this specialized technique and I'm always happy with the way it looks. The salon is comfortable and the interior design is an attractive "industrial glam", but it is not snobby. Just feels like the welcoming family business it is. read more

Please do not go to this salon, Robert completely ruined my hair! I never write reviews like this but I am so upset right now. I came in with long blonde hair (about mid back length) and asked for a small trim and for my highlights to be retouched because they had grown out. Robert told me he would trim off about 1.5 inches and that was it. I assumed he understood what I wanted because he didn't ask me any questions. He chopped off all my hair to shoulder length and dyed it a super dark brown color. I'm not even kidding it is almost black. He told me it was a demi permanent dye meaning it will wash out in a couple months (I later found out it's permanent). He also cut layers in my hair, which I never asked for. After he finished blow drying my hair, I think him and his wife could tell that I was shocked/upset about it and they tried to convince me that brown was popular now and that I looked really good with it. I'm only 18 years old and I really hate confrontation, so I didn't say anything in the salon but I've texted him politely a couple times now and I think he's just ignoring me. He charged me $350 for the service (plus I tipped him) I went to a different salon to try and get it fixed, and they did a test strand on me and found out that the dye he put on my head is actually permanent dye. This means that if I wanted to be blonde again (which I do) I would have to fry my hair with bleach. obviously I don't want to damage my hair any further, so now I'm stuck with dark brown hair and have to just wait for it to grow out. I start freshman year at my new school next week, and all I wanted was to have my hair looking nice and my highlights refreshed. I'm absolutely devastated, please be so careful and I do not recommend going to this salon! read more

I have been holding off on writing this review in hopes that my patience and faith that Duque would do right by me would result in exactly that. But alas, it has been over 1 month that I have been waiting for a refund so here it goes. Employees seem to be incredibly knowledgeable about skincare. However, I found that my skin was getting worse from treatments and products I was introduced to at Duque. Also, I found Autumn to be extremely confrontational when I questioned her methods since my skin was getting worse. Feeling that it would be unwise to continue to allow a confrontational person to work on my skin, I tried to rebook with someone else. And then I was introduced to Giovanna who wanted me to work things out with Autumn. Well I don't know why anyone would think the customer is obligated to work things out with a confrontational aesthetician. I told Giovanna my side of the story, and she seemed understanding and expressed that she wanted to help me out and would refund the money I had prepaid for treatments with Autumn. That was 1 month ago. I prepaid $600 for microderm treatments in November. Have not received 1 since then, but did have a shimmer facial with light therapy that Autumn said was complimentary. So according to their pricing that would be $90. Which means that they still owe me over $500 for services that have NOT been rendered! I am close to taking legal action, but am hoping it can be resolved amicably! I can't believe the round about/ shady way this had been handled by Duque! It really is the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I think the people there are lovely, and i wish no ill will. But I do think they need to reconsider their business strategy. Otherwise reviews like this are posted! Hopefully i can retract this or at least follow up saying that they did the right thing and paid me back for the prepayment for treatments that were never given. Over $500 people! Thats not chunk change. And I have been waiting over a month for a refund and had to follow up over a dozen times to get any kind of acknowledgement that the money is owed. BEWARE! read more

Oooookay. How to approach this review. I'll start with the positive since it's always nice to say something positive before you rip a business a new one, hehe. The positives. A very pretty space filled with things to buy. The reality. A very pretty places filled with wildly over-priced things to buy like jewelry, clothing, hair bands, bags and purses. The negative. The sales staff is pretty bad. One girl in particular was really pretty lame, mostly for telling my friend that a jacket looked really bad on her in a catty kinda way and for telling my friend that she couldn't stand on the wood floor near the salon chairs unless she was getting her hair done. I can see saying this if there were people getting their hair done and she was getting in the way or god forbid, distracting a stylist with her "unflattering" jacket, but the area was empty and all my friend wanted to do is see if she really did look as awful as the girl made her feel in the jacket since the mirrors were up by the wood floor. Just not cool and definitely not a way to win customers. Overall, I just felt that the snotty attitude they were spewing left a really bad taste in our mouths and I can't say I would ever go back here. read more

So I feel horrible for writing a bad review. But I just can't have someone else spend money on this establishment. 1) Haircut with Robert was ok. Not worth the price. I was (un)lucky enough to get the haircut at a low price because of a package I purchased I told Robert how I wanted my hair to be cut, and he DIDN'T DO IT! He was sure that HIS way was better. WTH. What happened to customer is always right?? I had to go home and trim my own bangs. 2) The other hair stylist, Giovanna is super annoying. She never cut my hair, but I had the pleasure (ha!) of sitting next her on two occasions while she cut someone else's hair. She brags non stop about her "skills" and she bitches about other hair stylists (so unprofessional). P.s. On both occasions, she convinced the her two customers to get a bob. Maybe that's the only cut she can do? 3) Facial was Ok. The room had no working lights. The window to the salon HAD NO GLASS, so while you're supposedly having a relaxing experience, you can hear 100% full volume of all the conversations in the salon. 4) My package had a mani-pedi included, but their manicurist quit. I wonder why. 5) JUST READ ALL THE OTHER BAD REVIEWS. They will give you more insight. 6) They DO NOT CALL YOU 24 hours in advance when they want to cancel your appointment. They call you ON THE DAY. And they expect their customers to cancel at least 24hours or they charge you the entire service. 7) Their receptionist NEVER picks up if you want to make an appointment. LOVE IT! There's pretty much nothing better than a great haircut. Here's some backstory... I'm not a faithful customer. I get like 2-3 haircuts a year, sometimes I get a new stylist, sometimes I do it myself - I'm the worst customer when it comes to hair. Especially when it comes to my bangs... I know I shouldn't, but I always cut them myself. So about a year ago I met a lovely gal named Masumi. Sharing a number of mutual friends and a love for the same bar, I bumped into her a few times before I learned she was a stylist. And what really sold me was when I learned that she had been cutting our mutual friends' hair. He has a kick ass, super stylish haircut and anyone that can master something so cool could probably cut anyone's hair. It's hard to describe but this friend's haircuts are always so awesome. We chat, we exchange numbers and I book an appt. She cut my hair and I loved it! And even though it's so unlike me, she's been cutting my hair ever since. And I don't see myself going anywhere else. She's even changed salons and is now at Duque in Ballard. So driving out to Ballard I was excited to get a new cut and check out a new salon. The space is adorable and spotless and the service was great. I loved the products, I chatted with some other employees and overall it was a really casual and warm environment. A totally great place for men or women to get their hair done. So glad Masumi is here! The drive to Ballard is totally worth it. read more

I had tired of the Habitude attitude and felt perpetually perplexed about which desk IS the check in desk. Then I found a sign that said "we fix bad brows". Housed in the old habitude space it has a more upbeat vibe and talkative staff. Nice looking facility with a pretty tiffany box blue in the spa area. They really DO eyebrows- now I know why the starlets won't go to just anybody. I was ready for my close-up. It didn't come cheap but I have had a few cheapies with unattractive results. (Don't go to Scream). If you don't like talk you might have to say something because talk happens. Being a type A person whose mind is busy anyway this can be ok. I just said "Uh-huh" and "Mmm". The boutique has A LOT of inexpensive bling and fun products. Not sure if anyone in Seattle wears this but the clothing was well priced and FUN. I really, really enjoyed the atmosphere when I got my hair done a month or so ago. I needed some fixing and Robert (one of the owners) really helped me out! I'm in a love affair with designer boutiques like this so getting my hair done in this environment was a special treat for me. They're very professional yet extremely laid back which are two very good qualities in my eyes. Everything was really calm, the music was nice, no rush. Be prepared to spend some $$ I went in just to take a look around the boutique a while later though and my cell phone happened to ring, As I went to answer it I was asked to step outside. I was caught off guard a little by that but I guess it's understandable. The girl could have been a wee bit nicer about it though, I wasn't gabbing around the whole store by any means! Get your brows done by AUTUMN BRUNO. She is MONEY. I've been seeing her once a month since May, and I can most definitely say she knows her stuff. The first time I went in, she did some work, but asked me to grow out my brows so she'd have more to work with next time, because my brows were different shapes and sparse on the ends. I really got schooled that day. It was tough, but I have faith in her, and she really came through. I think we are finally done with the reshaping, and are now just to touching up her beautiful work, if I do say so myself. I LOVE MY BROWS. Plus, Autumn is really cool and will make you feel right at home and at ease... even while she is examining your face and (I know this is gross, but) squeezing out a zit for you. Trust this woman. I have been here twice for brows and once for a pedicure. I plan on returning again and again for brows with Autumn, she is great. My pedicure was by a very nice and wonderful gal, but I'm cheap about pedicures and will probably not come back when I can get the service for less. My brow wax and tint here I love, and have had zero complaints for the two times I've had it done. People either love or hate Duque. I happen to be one who loves it. Robert is great. He changed my hair! So nice and knowledgeable. Hair services couldn't be better. The products they carry are great and reasonably priced too. I had to deduct one star because I did once experience poor service from one of their stylists. I was coming in to have by bangs trimmed and was warned by the receptionist not to be late. I arrived on time and after 10 minutes of waiting around and browsing their stuff, the stylist told me that he would get to me in about 45 minutes if I wanted to wait around...as if. This is about the waxing service I've received from Lou. Like others have said, she is very sweet and makes the experience far less awkward than it can be if you're going for any sort of bikini/Brazilian wax. She uses a combo of regular wax with stripes and hard wax and she is very quick which is great. The room that she uses is also very comfortable, soothing and very enjoyable to be in. Scheduling and re-scheduling is very simple and easy to do. The pricing of the waxes are variable since sometimes you get a discount for scheduling your appointment earlier or if it is a maintenance wax. Sometimes, I just wish the price was set as opposed to constantly changing. I've paid between $50-$70 depending on if it was a new wax or maintenance for a brazilian. read more

I've gotten waxed at a lot of different salons in Seattle and New York and Autumn Bruno is the best EVER! Waxing is painful no matter what you do but as far as smooth skin and ingrown removal, Autumn is the best. I have very sensitive skin and she has never irritated it. I've read the other bad reviews and I don't get it- no one who works at duque has ever been "snotty" to me, just chatty and helpful. And I am not a wealthy girl, I have never been able to drop large amounts of cash there but they're nice to me anyways- NOT always the case in a Ballard Ave shop! I love Duque so much I look forward to getting waxed every month- how insane is that? Autumn is also great for facials, after the few occasions when I was able to afford it I actually got complements on how great my skin looked from co-workers! Duque is a family-owned business of the best kind - it's run by people who love what they do and do it *very* well. I put a fairly high value on great salons - everyone wants their hair to look gorgeous and represent who they are. Duque definitely delivered on all that. I watched then give each and every one of their guests top-notch, attentive service. I went in on Friday evening expecting to get my roots done - I had coloured it black and bright red. I chatted with Giovanna while waiting for Robert, and she was very knowledgeable & helpful in the process of figuring out what I wanted to do with my hair. When Robert was done, he and Giovanna spent over an hour talking with me, helping me think through the options, and even testing different colours on my hair. On Saturday I went in for the actual appointment. Robert was absolutely meticulous in making my hair look awesome. I have very...interesting hair texture. It is not easy to work with. Robert not only did a great job on the black and purple colour I wanted, but my hair *never* felt and looked so amazing, shiny and smooth as it did when he was done! While I was in the chair, I actually watched Jo'-Revien's transformation and saw her hair go from Good to FAB! (I think Giovann did a great job.) Again, these people really, really care about what they do, and they want their customers to be happy. If you don't like what they do for you, SAY SO while you're there - they'll do whatever they can to make you happy. I for instance wanted more purple in my hair and Rob said, "no problem, just pop back in next time that's available and I'll take care of that for you." I was with my girlfriend in Ballard one afternoon when she wanted to stop in some store/boutique to look around. After entering, I assumed it was some salon. I was about to tell my girl, I'll be outside smoking, when an employee asked if she could help us with anything. Without thinking, I said yes. I need a haircut. She said OK. I didn't think they had someone who was able to cut men's hair. As a man with lesser hair then most men, I was a little concerned about getting some random haircut. I've been going to the same barber for last 4 years. I was introduced to David and before I knew it I was explaining to him what what I needed in a haircut. I got my haircut at this salon yesterday and am relieved that I have now finally found a salon that can cut hair and do it an amazing job. I typically get a haircut from a salon or barbershop and end up coming home with something my girlfriend always ends up fixing because it bothers her so much to look at that she does something about it. As a result she usually cuts my hair 75% of the time. But after my haircuts yesterday I have finally found a salon that cuts my hair perfectly! They cut hair dry, which I feel is really important for me because my head is cursed with 7 cowlicks and so stylists always mess up my hair if they cut it wet. I had Robert cut my hair. And both my girlfriend and I agree this is the best haircut I've ever had. She likes it so much actually that is is now planning to ditch her current stylist to go get her haircut here. The truly great hair cut aside, the salon is very clean and the ambiance is very soothing. I really like the music too, it was actually relaxing as opposed to the stuff they play at say Massage Envy that is glorified elevator music. Everyone here was courteous as well and it was super easy to book my appointment, which came with 2 email reminders, one when I booked the appointment and one the morning of -- super convenient to make sure I didn't forget about my appointment. All in all a great salon and will now be my go-to for a haircut. So check this place out if your tired of wasting your money bouncing from salon to salon with a consistently sub-par haircut. Not much one to write Yelp reviews, but I love Duque and everyone there so I feel I must add my two cents to this salon. Been going here to get my hair cut by Robert for about 9 years now. Every other place I've gone to in my life seem to traumatize my hair for the first week or two following a cut, but not here! Since the cuts are quality I can stretch out the time between cuts if I need to and not look like a total rats nest as a result. I've also gotten the Japanese hair relaxer treatment twice now in 9 years. It's worth every penny to me and I recommend it to anyone who may straighten their otherwise spastic frizzy and wavy hair. My hair routine in the morning is cut down by at least 20 minutes by this relaxer and on my hair it lasts almost a year (results will vary depending on your hair and how fast it grows out)! read more

I came here to get an eyelash extension fill since the lady I usually go to was out of town. The girl who did my lashes was lovely and they scheduled me last minute. The studio is cute, clean, and offers a variety of flavored (mint, cucumber, etc) flavors. The lash bed was comfy. But man, my extensions were awful...she left giant clumps of glue at the base of my lashes. I lied and said they were great as I left because i honestly didn't want her to attempt to fix them. When I tried to open my eyes after the fill, so many parts of my eye were partially glued shut. It took us a good 10 minutes to fix all those parts. Finally, when we were done, some of my lashes that didn't have any extensions on them still had glue on them. I went home and cleaned those off myself. In some portions, she glued 2-3 extensions on one of my lashes, and on some other parts, she glued a few of my lashes onto one extension. WTF. At a distance it looked OK, but upon a close examination it was awful and most of all, it was uncomfortable. Another side note - any extension lounge I've gone to before has had lovely pads, sometimes with collagen or soothing lotions in them, that they place under your eye to separate your upper/lower lashes while your eyes are closed. I'm fairly certain that this girl used masking tape of all things. I know it wasn't surgical/medical tape based on the color/texture. Super uncomfortable, and potentially unsanitary. When my lady came back into town, I rushed to her to get a fix and a fill. She was astounded at the horrible job as well .She explained that if someone glues a few of your natural lashes to one extension, then slowly as those lashes grow, it will tug on the base of all the other natural lashes that are glued to that extension, and essentially hurt and eventually pull that clump of natural lashes out. Not good. Luckily, she fixed them for me, but it's safe to say I'm never coming back to Duque again for extensions... EDIT: After reading other lash reviews for Duque, I can say that I did not have Lou as my esthetician. read more

When you haven't had your hair cut for 6 months (or colored) and someone comes across a party and asks you who does your hair because it's the most amazing color she's ever seen - you know you're in amazing hands. I'm so disappointed that I have to write a poor review. My daughter is getting ready to go to college and I wanted to splurge and get her hair dialed before she left. I set up the appointment with Robert and literally texted "My daughter wants to get her hair done before she heads to college. She needs it to be easy to maintain. She has blonde mid back length hair. Her color needs to be touched up and hair cut." I went with her to her appointment to ensure she was getting what she wanted. Since her and I were both there, we both collaborated on what she wanted, He said he'd take 2 inches off and literally held up her hair and showed us what he'd take off. We were fine with that. He said he wanted to take her natural color and go a shade or two darker and that seemed ok. We were under the impression he was toning down the very light blonde and we were ok with that. We were also very trusting. He literally cut at least 5 inches, gave her some layers and darkened her hair with a Demi to a dark brown. She's been blonde since birth and this was a shock. As anyone can imagine, going from long light blonde to a short dark brown is a serious commitment and a huge change that you have to be ready for. I tried to reach out to understand what we could do to fix this as she was so unhappy. My heart just aches. While I waited several days for a response, we got a second opinion at a reputable salon and they thought it looked like a home box kit because she felt the color wasn't evenly applied throughout the hair. They took several pictures and angles to assess what they could do. When I told her we paid over $300, she was shocked. She took a test sample to see how it would lift and after several hours, she called and said it turned orange. She was confident it was more of a permanent dark brown and that my daughter would literally have to grow it out. Robert did finally call me and when I talked it through, he was a bit defensive. He did say it was a Demi but we are still unsure based on our sample. I told him clearly there was miscommunication but this is an 18 year old client that tried to explain what she wanted and is not happy with her hair. He said we could come in and he'd do another service on her. I asked what he would charge and he said full price. My response was that now I'd be into this for $450+ and that's disappointing. I was expecting a response like "I'm so sorry she's not happy and I want to ensure she loves her hair. Have her come in and let's make this right." Between my hair and my daughter's hair, I've spend over $1200 in the last month at the salon. I'd expect a little more of a caring attitude and I didn't get the feeling that he wanted to ensure we were happy. Please consider this review as I know you have choices, and it's important to have a stylist that wants the best for each customer, to effectively communicate and to clarify each step of the way. I think this would have prevented a very disappointed 18 year old that went from being a long haired blonde for 18 years to a short haired dark brunette in one bad hair session. I'm still trying to understand how this new style is "less maintenance" for her heading off to college. read more

First, I really do love the decor of this place. Very cute, and I liked browsing through everything that they had for sale. I had a Brazilian with Lou, and, while she was very sweet and kind, I'm not too pleased with my results. Areas still feel prickly and I had to tweeze upon returning home - maybe a slight trim beforehand may have reduced breakage. But when I leave a wax, I want to feel smooth, not prickly. I bought a GroupOn for a brazilian wax at Duque and it was such an awkward experience. I don't even think my waxer lady told me her name? They were not warm or really that friendly. The wax was painful and she took off HUGE sections at a time. I hadn't gotten a wax in awhile and have really sensitive skin, but she just kept ripping. I've had other brazilian waxes since then, and they were 50 times better. I was in so much pain and brought tears--which has never happened at other locations. My waxer did not create any conversation with me other than saying I was taking the pain better than she does? Great. Also, the room is not fully closed. The top of the walls is open to the salon below where you hear people chattering, which I found really annoying. I wanted to like the space and wanted to find a waxing salon close to my house, but this is a definite NO GO. read more

Just a word to the wise: I made an appointment here, and wasn't notified of the cost. After reading some reviews, I realized it might be out of my budget, so I called to inquire. Giovanna has given me a style/blowout twice now at the last minute (a shoulder injury gave me the luxurious problem of not washing my own hair) and it was great both times. They have a shampoo bowl version of the Brazilian blow out that renders my hair freakishly smooth, soft and shiny. She is a master at braids and up dos that stay without a lot of hold and is able to throw my hair into a bunch of intricate options quickly. They sell Living Proof, undies, mace, bedazzled mace, bear spray, and other personal protection products. Total New Yorkers. The other stylist David does only dry cuts. They make no representation of being everyday stylists for everyone and they're not the people to cut/color my hair - but it's been an awesome place to get these conditioning treatments and blow drys. read more

You just really can't get any better than Giovanna and Robert. First of all: dry cutting!!!!! Who knew this makes all the difference for a good cut. On my first visit here (5 years ago) Giovanna told me my hair would look good even just after getting out of the shower with her cuts. And guess what? It does! She's a miracle worker. And Robert, her partner, is just as awesome. In fact, I've seen he rocks at taking a brunette to a blonde -- which is quite unusual in Seattle salons. So see him if that's what you're looking for. Beyond their talents, they simply create an positive, dare I say "healing" environment. They just take care of you, from their genuine interest in their community, to the calming teas and waters they constantly attend to. And Giovanna's always ready with recommendations for things like nails, lashes, etc. Also - they are marketed as pricey, which they are, but here's the deal: both Giovanna and Robert will get you a cut and color that lasts. I only go every 6 months (3 if I want to splurge) -- and my hair still holds up great in between. I guess it's true that you get what you pay for! Head there for your best hair ever! read more
