House special dumplings with pork and shrimp

Food was very good for the most part. I ordered the house dumplings (pork and shrimp) which were phenomenal. Usually I'm hesitant to order pork dumplings as I find the pork filling can be too porky or almost gamey, but these were very nice. The pork was balanced out nicely with the tender shrimp and it gave the filling a nice little snap to it. They were not overly heavy or porky in the slightest and they give you 12 in an order which is very generous. Would definitely recommend these dumplings, even if you're not much of a pork fan like me. These are some of the best dumplings I've had in recent memory. I also ordered the combination lo mein, which was also very good. The noodles were thick and chewy but it was a little oily or greasy, and some cuts of meat like the beef were a lot of fat and not really edible. Still it was very good and once again they give you a huge portion. The service was a bit rude and didn't go out of the way for you. They were not super attentive nor very friendly but I think this might be cultural. I think if I go back again I would just get takeout rather than dine in. There are lots of round tables and a couple of four-person ones. It's not really conducive for a single person to eat in alone like I did. But the food is of course what's most important and this is one of the best Chinese restaurants I've found in the area with large portions and flavorful dumplings.

Mapo Tofu
Saha S.

This is a nice family style Chinese restaurant that we went to and it was an excellent experience! We got the shrimp Wonton soup, scallion pancakes, mapo tofu, and chrysanthemum tea. Everything tasted good, and it was the first time I tried mapo tofu, and I absolutely loved it. The service was really good and the restaurant was nice and quiet too. This is a place that we will definitely come back to with friends.

If you spend weeks searching for the best dumpling place in the greater DMV, you will have the most difficult time finding a dumpling place that makes better soup dumplings or traditional dumplings, than Dumplings & Beyond. You can watch The Chef in the back kneading the dough. Everything here is handmade. I kind of feel like this place didn't get the love that it deserves because this place should have a line out of the door and around the corner. I would legit drive an hour for this place but luckily I live 15 minutes from it. The ambiance was calm and relaxing. If you haven't been, RUN don't walk.

Wonton soup was bland and just meh, beef lo mein was nothing special. Good service and nice staff. Guess you can come here if you're in the area and craving some Chinese food.

Triple delight dumplings
Zarin B.

My #1 favorite place to get dumplings!! Absolutely love the triple delight and the fish dumplings. Can't go wrong with any of them tbh. They're all handmade, loaded, and huge portions. I always get them steamed so I can't speak for pan-fried. Also loveeee the beef chow foon. Got medium spicy and it actually had a good kick to it. It's a bit like pad see ew but with a different flavor profile and more smokiness. The beef pieces were really tender and I can imagine are crispy if eaten right away. This time around I ordered delivery, but I've dined in in the past. It's a great place to bring family or friends to share some tasty authentic dishes.

Pork N' Napa Dumpling ($12.95/10pcs)

Dumplings and Beyond is an unpretentious, no-frills Chinese spot located in the neighborhood of Dumbarton Oaks - you walk up the stairs of a small strip mall to see an entryway crowded with dozens of takeout orders (a great sign of a solid Chinese restaurant). There are many tables throughout the space, with multiple large tables equipped with the classic Lazy Susan setup to maximize family-style sharing - as a party of 9 on a Saturday night at 7pm, there were a couple of open tables, as the restaurant was around 75% full, though continued to fill up throughout the night. The menu is extensive, ranging from your classic Chinese-American dishes (think General Tso's Chicken and Mongolian Beef) to more traditional Chinese fare (Tree Ear Salad and Ginger Scallion Shrimp) to regional specialties (you'll see some food from Hunan and Szechuan Province on the menu) - there's truly something for everyone! To start, we ordered their Pork n' Chives Dumpling ($12.95/10pcs), Chicken & Black Mushroom Dumpling ($12.95/10pcs), and Shrimp N' Chive Dumpling ($15.95/10pcs) - the food began to come out within 10 minutes. While I wasn't able to try any because I'm gluten-free, my friends really enjoyed these dumplings - they were plump and juicy, with the perfect dumpling wrapper thickness that trapped the soup inside, keeping the filling soft and supple. Additionally, the price is pretty reasonable given how large each dumpling is! My friends also shared some dishes family-style, first starting with the proteins: the Chinese Style Mu Shu Pork ($17.95) with cucumber, wooden fungus and egg with soy sauce, the Broccoli Beef ($19.95) served with carrots and brown sauce, and the Kung Pao Chicken ($16.95) with bell pepper, onion, and peanuts. While none of these were fantastic, they were generous portions at a good price, and the meat quality seemed pretty good! Additionally, the wood fungus in the Mu Shu Pork lent an interesting textural contrast to the dish. As a vegetable, we ordered the String Beans Szechuan Style ($14.95), which are fried green beans in an addictively spicy chili oil - these are quite greasy, but the green beans held their firm texture, and it's a great dupe for the famous Din Tai Fung String Beans! They also ordered the Combination Fried Rice ($14.95), which is a heap of glistening fried rice topped with chicken, beef, shrimp, and vegetables. While I didn't try this, it was (again) a large portion, and my friends thought it was seasoned well. Since we had ordered so many dishes, I think they threw in a large bowl of white rice for free as well, which paired nicely with the salty proteins. Lastly, I ordered their Pork Spare Rib Casserole ($19.95), which is a gigantic clay pot of comforting soup filled to the brim with cabbage, onion, cilantro, wood fungus, tofu, and succulent pork spareribs. The soup was well-seasoned (if not bordering on too salty), but the clean-tasting broth and fresh vegetables were perfect for a cold DC night. Overall, this was a great, affordable spot for both Americanized and authentic Chinese food, and perfect to curb the Chinese craving of several hungry Georgetown students - the food is tasty, service is fast, and there's something for everyone!

Hot spicy and savory tofu. Vegan and delicious!!!
Jen R.

Vegan reviewer here! This is going to be short and sweet. I ordered delivery via DoorDash and received my order within about 30 minutes. The hot and spicy tofu... get it!!! It was everything I had wanted and more if chili, garlic, salty goodness is your thing. I do enjoy spicy food and it was not spicy in my opinion. This dish comes with a side of white rice as well. I also ordered the vegetable chow foon which was alright. The texture of the noodles was too soft but I still ate it. If anything, just get the tofu and live your best life! I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because I requested hot oil and utensils and did not receive it in my take out order.

Awesome meal ordering dumplings and beyond for takeout - unfortunately across the city but won't stop us from returning, we loved it. great dishes - pan fried dumplings, sichuan noodles, cold sesame noodles (amazing, thick noodles, refreshing), chili chicken (slightly different version than others, this one has some different seasonings, isn't as spicy, has cilantro, etc.), walnut shrimp (delicious, huge shrimp, addicting sauce). good dishes - lo mein (love their slightly thicker noodles here), garlic eggplant, steamed dumplings ok dishes - cucumbers (mostly garlic in terms of flavor), xiao long bao, scallion pancake (although ours was undercooked - could see this being good when done right). Portions were big, service was quick.

Cute family run Chinese place in Georgetown, I have high standards for dumplings but I thought these were decent! Food 3/5 - soup dumplings were just okay, I like the pork potstickers better and really enjoyed the crispy beef! Service 4/5 - quick service Vibes 4/5 - good place for family!

Joanne H.

Price is very reasonable. Portion are huge. Street parking but ample parking. Service was ok. The waiter does not seem super happy to be there but it doesn't really bother me lol Restaurant was pretty big so we didn't need to wait for tables.

The REAL mu shu pork- sorry, if it comes with pancakes, it's not traditional mu shu pork...

I've been hearing about this place for a while now, so our daughter made reservations for our visit…read moreand we were not disappointed! We were greeted and seated right away. Our server was new and very helpful. The space is tight in there so walking back to our table was a bit of a challenge trying not to hit someone while they were taking a drink, but the energy is high and lively! We ordered cocktails to start, and there were so many interesting choices that it was a difficult choice. We all thought we got the best one! Every dish was fresh, flavorful and fire! The scallion lamb was tender and savory. The crab fried rice was total comfort food and I could eat this every day! All those flavors! The dish that stole the show; however, was the eggplant! Wow! What a wonderful surprise. Hot, fresh and full of flavor, the eggplant was perfectly cooked and we couldn't stop talking about it long after we left!

First time visiting this place after saving it on my list for a while now. Well, let's just say…read morethat it's worth the hype! Advice: sitting outside might be better in the cooler weather because we were being eaten alive by mosquitoes and fighting off flies. I really hope that they consider some type of nature oils near the tables to help guests feel more comfortable outdoors. Also, it would help to get more than one fan. Hospitality: aside from the bugs encounter, I would say that we did not have reservations (they were packed inside) so the hostess was nice enough to accommodate us outdoor. Our waiter, Anthony was a ball of energy and he really understands the dishes and was able to give great recommendations, some of which we plan to try on our next visit. Portions: the dishes are shareable so we only ordered the beef noodles and walnut shrimp and both were more than enough for a party of 2. DRINKS: I ordered the dark and stormy which can best be described as not too sweet and perfect for anyone desiring a well balanced drink. The bourbon smash was also really good. Well balanced with a smoky flavor which I loved. FOOD: Beef noodles- gosh this was so divine! Be warned however, there is a bit of spice to it but nothing that you won't be able to handle. I think the spices paired with the preparation of the noodles and the beef all made this dish memorable. Walnut shrimp- another memorable dish which came with a side of white rice. The shrimps were HUGE! But the flavors on each shrimp paired with that crunchy texture and creamy sauce, spectacular! Safe to say that we enjoyed both dishes and cannot wait to return and reserve indoor tables lol

The egg rolls are crispy but not too oily - and they're delicious on top of that! I also had some beef and broccoli and it was super good too. The flavor was savory, strong and pure. The broccoli was crispy, the beef was moist. No thickening flavor like flour or corn starch was evident in its tasty sauce. It wasn't even too salty. Go figure! So, it's surprising that a place that looks so old and dirty can churn out such great tasting food BUT NEW DYNASTY DOES!!! The pork dumplings were fine but a bit doughy -- could've used a touch more crisp or a thinner wrapper to let the filling stand out more. Sushi-wise, things picked back up. Got the tuna roll, yellowtail scallion roll, and spicy scallop roll, and the fish quality across all three was solid -- fresh, clean cuts, nothing that tasted off or like an afterthought, which isn't always a given at a spot with this kind of unassuming storefront. Disappointing Experience Despite Good Food and Service…read more While the food and service at Sol 38 were good, our overall experience was extremely disappointing due to how management handled a gift card issue. We had a gift card from several years ago and specifically called ahead to confirm that it would be accepted. We were assured that it would be. However, when it came time to pay, the restaurant refused to honor it. The manager even contacted the owner, who ultimately declined to accept the card. What was most disappointing wasn't simply the refusal, but the complete lack of effort to make things right. Despite having received confirmation in advance, we weren't offered any accommodation whatsoever--not a complimentary drink, appetizer, discount, or even a gesture of goodwill. We spent well beyond the value of the gift card and had every intention of returning and recommending the restaurant to others. Unfortunately, this experience completely changed our minds. For a restaurant that previously enjoyed Michelin recognition, I expected a much higher standard of hospitality and customer care. I also couldn't help but notice how surprisingly empty the restaurant was for a Saturday evening. Good food and attentive servers can only go so far when management fails to prioritize the guest experience. It's unfortunate because what could have been a wonderful evening instead left us feeling undervalued as customers. We won't be returning.
