Came close to opening season for them and I am very excited to see all the business they are getting in moorpark as a dumpling/dimsum place. It's rad to see business that haven't really been in town thrive, and it makes me want to support them more to prove that yes we can support a dimsum place over here. To make the obvious comparison to DTF is likely a bit unfair because of the worldwide infrastructure and quality of DTF. But to be a bit unfair, and use the comparison as a centering point, there are pros and cons to dumpling shack. I think the real shining dishes here were the noodle ones, and not the soup dumplings. The udon dishes felt like a particular standout. read more

We've been to the Dumpling Shack two times in the last two weeks. We've tried different things on the menu, and really enjoyed everything we've got! The restaurant was busy each time we've been there. We will definitely be going back to try their other dishes! Wait staff is nice, just not very outgoing/friendly. The restaurant is well lit and beautifully designed. Their staff was really nice. If you go during lunch or dinner, you might have to wait a little. Their food was very tasty. My favorite would probably be the pork chops, while the fried rice was under cooked a little. Their portion size is pretty generous so order cautiously. I would recommend trying this restaurant out if you are in the Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Simi Valley area, especially if you are craving dumplings. read more

We ordered 4 items and they were all very good. Water service was excellent and the servers were friendly. However it was extremely slow. This is a new business and they were slammed. We tried to eat here on a Friday at dinner time and there were so many people that we could not get a table. Our order came out very slowly, at least 10 minutes between each item we had ordered at the same time with the last item over an hour after we ordered it. It was pretty loud as there were so many people there. At times a line out the door was forming for take out and people waiting for a tables. I gave this restaurant 5 stars because the food was really good, and everyone was very nice and they are still learning the ropes. There were plenty of servers and bus people so the kitchen probably needs to get a better understanding of how to get the orders out. I would suggest to them that they serve each table their food quicker so they can clear the table for new customers instead of spreading it out well over an hour. Sitting for the length of time that we were there was a little uncomfortable. The chair backs were too straight and pushed against my back wrong. If I was not sitting there for so long it would have probably been fine. We will go back but will wait a little while until they get a bit better at getting the orders out a little quicker. We were excited to try this new dumpling spot in Moorpark. There are very few of these in the Conejo Valley. At 6:30pm, this place was absolutely chaotic. There were many people outside and no clear organization of how to get a table. Apparently, you write your name on a notepad that is next to the door. Then, someone will come out and yell your name when a table is available. There is no indication of how long you are wait will be. If you ask someone, you will probably not get an answer. The staff seemed totally frazzled and overwhelmed. They are clearly understaffed to be able to handle the large amount of people waiting for a table. The tables turn too slow because the food comes out too slow. There was large group of people waiting to place takeout orders, but there is no assigned cashier. When we were finally seated, about an hour later, the food took about 30 minutes to come out. We ordered a bok choy appetizer, chicken pan fried dumplings, shrimp and pork dumplings, fried tofu, and chicken wonton soup. We never got the tofu or chicken dumplings. They ran out of chicken dumplings apparently. We were done with our food and they had not made the fried tofu yet, even though that is an appetizer. So, there are definitely a lot of operational kinks to work out here. They also need to assign waiters to certain tables. We didn't have individual attention- the staff is running around doing many different tasks. Now for the food- it was solid but I've had better. I wish we could have tried the other 2 items that never came out though. The bok choy was actually individual leaves and not whole bok choy, so the portion was very small. The menu is pretty good, with several noodle and rice dishes. Most notably, they have dim sum, which is unheard of in the area. This makes the Dumpling Shack unique. I'd come back but will give them more time to improve the operational issues first. read more

Hidden gem alert in Ventura County. This place is always packed so be prepared to wait. On Friday 11:30am was already packed inside. Waiting is worthwhile however. This is possibly the only semi authentic dim sum Chinese restaurant around Ventura County. The employees are mostly from San Gabriel Valley (so far away and thank you) so the cooks are authentic. Food comes out pretty quick and steamy hot for us. The flavors are catered more to the Western demographics however. When you are seated you mark a sheet on what you like to order where waiters take to submit your order. You can't go wrong here, everything is pretty good. Xioa (Siu) long bao is what they are famous for which is juicy yummy tasty but temperature steaming hot so careful. It is hand made with so much love. My fav is the onion pancake which crispy exterior tasty soft interior pancake which is also most authentic in my opinion. The super long tasty noodles are really freshly delectable. We also ordered pork bao which is on par taste interior but exterior rice part they can rework it (not tasty). FYI the boba is not my fav because it is watered down. If you want good boba there is a Boba Time exactly next door. Portions are smaller so be prepared to spend about $45 for 2 people for about 4 small dishes. The ambiance is very pretty and modernist appearance. Open kitchen I like. Parking is in a large lot with Smart/Final Kohls plaza. Staff is plentiful and super helpful kind. We came here on Valentine's Day around 5:00 PM and had only about a 15 to 20 minute despite it being packed inside. When you first walk in there's a little tiny stand on the right hand side which we didn't see you when we first walked in so we went to the register and they told us to put our name on the list and then they call your name when our table was ready. Once seated you can browse the menu and then you select your items on a white double sided sheet of paper and then a staff member comes by to take your list. Then as the food is ready, it comes out. We did get our dessert sweet dish first which was fine and then we were there at least an hour with the food trickling in little by little. everything was delicious. Nothing was over seasoned or strong to the taste; everything was pretty mild. The tea's were pretty sweet, which is to be expected. The staff was really nice and were patient when asking about what was in certain dishes. Our favorite dishes were the pan fried chicken wontons, the spring rolls, the deep fried wontons, and the pork soup dumpling. The peach buns were very bland, but I'm not sure if that's how they are typically so not our preferred taste but weren't terrible. We definitely will be returning to try some other menu items and repeat some of the ones we liked. The restaurant overall was very simple decor, clean and mostly table and chair seating with one wall of bench seating. Open air kitchen. I have to agree with other reviewers. The service and food was great, but the lack of cleanliness is a disappointment in this restaurant. The condiment bottles and napkins holder on our table were very dirty, with sticky, dried-on grease. As for the food, the Steamed Bok Choy was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The dumpling shack is pretty good. It's a tad pricey but it is good. Not a lot of varieties to choose from. The taste is good, the sauces were all there on the side for you, and the service was good. It's pretty cozy but I can also seeing it get packed and cramped but that's also a good thing. The only complaint I have is just the varieties you choose from. I really appreciate the effort of this place considering the area, demographic, and what resources they have. It's good to where I will return when I am craving a taste of home and familiarity. We got their stir fried bok choy (could use a few more minutes of cooking), pork xiao long bao (good broth on inside but could fill the wrapping a little more), fried dumplings (put the garnish inside and season just a liiiiiittle more), running yolk custard bun (this was perfect), and red bean bun. The service is more accommodating and tentative than your usual traditional chinese restaurnt so rest assured you will be served here. Plenty of parking cuz its within the parking plaza. We got excited when we saw this new spot. It's pretty decent for the area--and I love that you can see the Asian aunties in the kitchen. It took about 35 minutes for the first dish (noodles) to arrive, and we ordered five items in total. The pork chop fried rice was a bit disappointing--the pork was bone dry, overcooked, and had too much five spice. I'd rate it a 6/10. The siomai was good, and the chicken and pork dumplings were around a 7/10. The noodles were tasty. Service was attentive--servers came quickly when called. I just wish the dim sum came with a lid to help keep it warm, and their soy sauce and vinegar dip could use a little improvement. Prices are reasonable for what you get. Overall, I'd come back only if I'm in the area, but probably wouldn't make a special trip for it. read more

Yuuuum. First time in and we wanted to try it all. Top favorites from our meal were the golden egg custard buns, red bean paste buns, and soup dumplings. Wontons were good, broth wasn't anything standout to us. I was a fan of the scallion noodles, while my friend preferred the House Dumplings. We both tried the Jasmine Lemon Bomb tea, delicious. The red bean buns and the golden egg custard were both sooo delicious and made great desserts to the meal. I'll be going back specifically for those. We went just after 2pm. Very attentive and helpful staff. We were greeted and sat as soon as we opened the door. It stayed that way for every guest who came in no matter how busy they were. At one point the place had only a few seats open. Fairly large eatery with a good amount of seating. We noticed many people coming in for pick up orders too. Family friendly, so many families with little kiddos and strollers. They have high chairs and a changing table, always a win. Overall great and satisfying meal/experience. We will be back! read more

They do not accept reservations, and despite claiming a 30-minute wait for Saturday dinner, we arrived to find the place half empty. The only decent item on the menu is the pork dumpling. I really wanted to like this place because the food was actually pretty good, but unfortunately the service and overall experience left a lot to be desired. We were seated right in direct sunlight during sunset, and the glare was so intense that I literally had to wear sunglasses inside the restaurant just to see. When we asked if it was possible to move tables, we were told no. We were not even offered to wait for another table. It was just a no. We noticed other guests struggling with the same issue, and some type of shade, curtain, or window covering would make a huge difference. The service was also disappointing. We received our waters quickly, but one of our children accidentally knocked a glass over, spilling water across the table. No one came to check on us or offer assistance until we flagged someone down. They brought a few napkins, but never replaced the spilled water, the soaked plate, or the missing spoon, leaving us short a place setting for the rest of the meal. At one point we asked for forks and felt like our request was being laughed off rather than taken seriously. Throughout the meal, no one really checked on our table. Food would arrive, but there was very little actual service or attention to whether we needed anything. The bathroom was also not very clean, and the soap dispenser appeared to be installed incorrectly. The only way to get soap was through the wrong end of the dispenser, which felt unsanitary. The cleanliness issues extended beyond the bathroom. The chili sauce, soy sauce, and vinegar containers sitting on our table were covered in grime and felt sticky to the touch. This wasn't a case of one table being overlooked; they looked like they hadn't been cleaned or even wiped down in days. For items that every guest is expected to handle while eating, that level of cleanliness was concerning. I almost didnt want to use it. Overall, the food was good, but good food alone wasn't enough to make up for the poor service, lack of attentiveness, uncomfortable seating situation, and cleanliness concerns. read more

We went there tonight. The food was good, not great. Definitely not comparable to DinTai Fung by any means. The service was so slow and not accommodating. A few employees seemed to know what they were doing but most were just running around with what didn't seem to be designated positions. We had to ask several times for anything we needed to several different employees as I don't think there are designated servers or really any position. But my biggest issue was the lack of cleanliness. The table condiments were filthy. The bathrooms were broken and not stocked and also very dirty. We won't be back. Unfortunately, we had to leave before eating. After waiting the initial 45 minutes quoted, we were told it would be another 25-30 minutes to be seated. Other customers leaving mentioned that the kitchen was also backed up, taking 30 minutes to serve food after ordering. We couldn't keep our seven-year-old waiting that long. Disappointing, as we were looking forward to the food I think the management should train their staff to be more honest with people wanting to eat about the wait times. I definitely wanna come back and try the food to give a full honest review on the restaurant. Happy they are busy and thriving. I definitely want to give it another shot. We sampled the sticky rice wrap, not very good in our opinion, but I can see how others might like it for its authenticity. Tempura shrimp was light and crispy, good flavor. Spicy pork wontons were the star of the show, great texture and flavor. Fried pork dumplings were a close second. Very flavorful and fresh. The BBQ pork Bao was just okay, nothing exciting, flavor was as expected. We also ordered the pork Xiao long bao which is the soup bao. This was supposed to be their signature dish and it was a let down. There was basically no soup inside our bao. It was almost if they were dried out. The bao itself was mushy inside with little to no flavor sadly. For drinks we tried the tropical tea which was a little sweet, but I enjoyed it and the Thai tea with Boba. Tasted just like any other place, a solid choice as well. The service was good even with the chaos of a packed restaurant. Having lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for years surrounded by the best of the best as far as dim sum goes, this place absolutely compares. Hand-pulled Udon noodles. Scratch, hand-made dumplings. This place is absolutely phenomenal. Comparing this family-run operation to a large, commercial, nationally-distributed chain like Din Tai Fung is lame, and also shows a complete lack of culture. We recently visited The Dumpling Shack in Moorpark, and the experience started off a bit rocky. There was a large party ahead of us, and when we put our name down, the host couldn't give a clear estimate--saying it could be anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours. Another party ahead of us had been told 20 minutes and later informed it would be closer to an hour, which led them to leave. Fortunately for us, that meant we were seated within about 10 minutes. Once seated, the biggest issue arose around food allergies. Someone in our party has a severe sesame allergy. We asked our waiter multiple times if any of the dishes we ordered contained sesame, and he confidently told us that none of them did and that they don't use sesame at all. Due to a language barrier and some uncertainty, we double-checked with someone at the front. Thankfully, we did--because after checking with the kitchen, he informed us that about half of the dishes we ordered did contain sesame. Had we not asked a second person, this could have resulted in a medical emergency. This was extremely concerning and left a very bad impression. As for the food itself, it was just okay. The restaurant is fairly new and feels very unorganized at the moment. Service was inconsistent--it was difficult to get water refills, and we often had to flag someone down. On the positive side, the food came out quickly, which we appreciated. Overall, while there is potential here, the lack of organization and especially the mishandling of food allergy information is a major issue. I might consider trying this place one more time once they've been open longer and have their service and safety procedures better established, but for now, it's definitely in a trial-and-error phase. read more
