So glad I found this place. When I got back from visiting china I was really in the mood for some authentic food in Boston. I came here with a few friends solely for dumplings and I was very impressed. Though they aren't the best xialongbao (soup dumplings) I've ever had, they are the best in Boston. The dough is a little thick in comparison to the real deal but I've learned my standards need to be a lower here. The pan fried pork buns were great also- definitely worth the wait it takes for them to be ready. We ordered the Taiwanese style salt and pepper fried chicken which was like crack. Little bite sized pieces of salty goodness that were devoured within seconds of arriving. The bok choy was great also. Highly recommend. Can't wait to come back and try the spicy fish stew and the Singapore noodles. read more

I have dined in and ordered take out from this restaurant. The food is generally pretty good, and price is a little higher than some restaurants but still reasonable. However, it is not my go to Chinese restaurant when I'm craving it. This restaurant definitely can not compare to the ones in Chinatown, but the location is close to Harvard so it is more convenient for students. read more

We are forever on a quest to find good dumplings. This was yet another stop on this quest. These aren't knock the table over in disgust dumplings, but we are still on the quest to find the best. The soup dumplings were quite large, tasty and filled with tasty broth, but the steamed pork & leek dumplings were the winner for the night. I wouldn't say anything was bad here, but I won't be seeking this spot out when that dumpling craving hits. read more

I visited this place on a Sunday. It was rather busy, serving a diverse clientele but (seemingly) majority Chinese. There were many families so there are the occasional kids running around, making some noise. I had steamed dumplings (beef and celery, chicken and cabbage) and enjoyed it. Hot tea is complementary and is especially welcome on a cooler day like today. There were no red flags regarding cleanliness. Although the wait staff is clearly moving fast to serve food efficiently, there were numerous awkward moments in my experience. Overall, not too bad an experience. I can see myself returning here. read more

This is a pretty good restaurant for casual, hearty Chinese food. The pan-fried dumplings were tasty, with very generously sized filling. The mapo tofu was good as well, and tasted even more flavorful reheated as leftovers the day after. To be a bit nit-picky, the scallions could have been chopped more finely, and the dough on the dumplings could have been thinner, but such standards are to be reserved for a different scale of restaurant. If you're hungry and not too picky, you will like the variety of dishes and generous servings at this place. read more

Great food but you need to come here for the atmosphere! Super lively for parties and events, and the food is all easy to share.

We went there for food the second day we visited Boston. I would score the food a 3.5 and the servers a 3.5. The ONLY reason why I scored this lower is because the lady that was the cashier that day was rude and unaccommodating. There was a wait and we opted not to share a table. (2 of us) So as parties went ahead of us, which was fine to accommodate the size, finally there was an open table and so they decided to NOT seat us at the table of 4 and wanted us to wait LONGER for a small table. I went to her and mentioned to her that there was NO longer a wait and why she couldn't seat us at the open table, rather make us wait longer for a double table. I've been in the restaurant business and I have never seen this before and it's such a poor experience. We left immediately. She didn't even look at me and respond to me. Just said: ''That's a table for 4". Uhm, there's NO ONE in line! Even if the food was amazing, that wouldn't make it ok. So, I normally wouldn't 'invest' time in writing a bad review, but I wanted to make sure it's about the overall experience for me and others who may read this review. It wasn't pleasant and we will never come back. read more

Having a good laugh reading the angry one star reviews. Having lived in several major cities around the world, and eaten different styles of Chinese food in each, I have found this place to be one of the better places I have tried. Good buns and good Singapore Fried Noodles. I am happy that they are able to stay open in such difficult times. Happy New Year to all. read more

This post comes from two taste buds that have lived in the north part of China for over 22 yrs. My friend and I went to the Dumpling House in a cold winter night. Honestly, this restaurant has 3.5 stars yelp review, which is not that good. However, based on my previous experience, if a Chinese restaurant is ranking HIGH on Yelp, usually it equals to NOT authentic :-P vice versa. So my friend and I went there without any hesitation. Indeed, this is a great place for soup buns. Again, if you like soup bun like me, you should try this place! Can not say the same great words for other dishes though... Soup bun (xiao long bao): the inside is so good, the meat is well seasoned, the buns are all freshly steamed. The only tiny issue is the soup part. The soup is not well contained in the bun. For some reason, most of the buns do not contain soup. Anyway, compared to other bun places in Boston, the bun here is awesome (better than Winsor dim sum)! Xi-an meat bun (rou jia mo): it's too expensive ($5) for a tiny bun (the bun is smaller than a lady's palm). The cool thing is the meat contains cilantro in it. I am a huge fan of cilantro. But the meat is not well seasoned/stewed. Usually, the pork in it should be stewed for over 3 hours to fully absorb the seasoning flavor, I felt the meat here did not stew for long enough time. Pan seared clams (la chao ge li): I have to say, this should not be a recommended dish. When not using too much spices, the quality of this dish is 90% determined on the quality of the clams. Unfortunately, the clams in this restaurant are okay quality, but far from great. So this dish is a so-so level. Pan seared pork (hui guo rou): This dish is a surprise. They add cabbage to it, which is not traditional. But it surprisingly tastes awesome! I recommend this dish, very savory. In order to make it tasty, the pork contains a lot of fat, sort of like bacon. If you are on diet, stay away from this dish. It is a real devil. Overall, based on the quality of food and surrounding Chinese Restaurant qualities in Boston area, I would give 4 stars. They have a long menu, I believe there are more goodies worth to try! read more

Their lunch special three combination is a good deal: three lunch special together will be 25.99 (9.xx each). A good option for colleagues lunch. Also, the dishes are served separately with rice--easy to share. read more

Very good food all around. We ordered a wide variety and it was all good. We had steamed pork dumplings, twice cooked pork, spicy chicken, fried rice, fried noodles, and quite a few other things. It was all very enjoyable. Good authentic good. read more

This place is excellent. It's always packed but the wait is never bad. It's a really great place to get dumplings. I've tried a bunch of different things because I always eat family style. My favorite has been the barbecue spareribs and beef scallion pancakes. The ribs are really tender and they come right off the bone. The beef scallion pancakes is a great twist on the classic scallion pancakes. You really can't go wrong with the assortment of foods on the menu. The service is great. If you want a good experience with an authentic Chinese restaurant in Cambridge you should definitely check this place out. read more

Authentic Chinese cuisine. We had the green beans with dried shrimp sauce, fried pork/shrimp dumpling, pork with bean curd, and fried rice cakes. They were all DELICIOUS. Prompt service. Polite servers. The dumplings take a little longer to prepare. Highly recommend read more

Dumpline house in Cambridge is the best Chinese restaurant in town. I usually come at least 3 or 4 times a week. Spicy beef in wok, cold duck nanjing style and twice cooked pork are my favorite. Soup dumplings for the win! I prefer ordering take-out, but if you can get a large group there, it's fun going family style.

This place is a house favorite. We enjoy the soup dumplings and each get our own entree dish to share. My favorites are shredded beef with string beans, three treasure vegetables (peppers, potatoes, and eggplant), beef short ribs with black pepper sauce, and mapo tofu. Satisfies my chinese food craving every time. read more

This actually is a pretty decent place if you can get over the two things...(1) the overall uncleanliness of the whole restaurant, dishes, utensils, cups, floors, etc. and (2) cramped space. On (1), I have no confidence they actually use clean water and soup for dishwashing. I'm afraid to take a peak inside the kitchen....so that probably is not a good thing. On (2), be prepared to sit right next or across from strangers... Once you get past those downsides, and know what to order from experience, you'll have quite a wonderful time here. If you're into xiao long bao, I recommend pork as is in most cases. With crab XLBs, you literally get a mouthful of "full" crab taste...not only (or less of, rather) the actual crab meat but the internal organs...!! See for yourself!!! Clams with black been sauce is very tasty thanks to a liberal dose of MSG! read more

It was a nut house in here on a Sunday night, and the hostess was very pushy and rude, and kept trying to get people to agree to sit at a large round table instead of at individual tables to save time. I got the steamed beef celery dumplings and I believe there were about 8 pieces per order. Each. Bite. Had. Cartilage. In. It. It was pretty disgusting, and the soupy, watered-down soy sauce (?) that came with it had an odd acidic flavor. My fellow diners got the soup dumplings and said the same thing about the quality of the meat inside of the dumpling. This place was pretty gross, and I wouldn't recommend coming here. read more

Disgusting object in hot and sour soup! Ordered three dishes, rice and hot and sour soup tonight, and something weird in my soup. It looks like chewed shrimp with shell! It scares me so much given we are in a pandemic! I'm not a Chinese food expert, but I don't think this is something should be in hot and sour soup. read more

Tried 3 different dishes from entree tonight. All were subpar and pricey for comparable chinese food. Way too much chili pepper and grease (oil) used in all three dishes. I was misled by all positive reviews on google, yet if you check reviews on yelp they seem more fairly balanced about this place. If you like very hot peppery food, this may be the place for you but the large amount of oil and chili made us taste no food and vegetable flavor. We will never go back to this place. read more

A solid spot to get your crave for dumpling satisfied! Tried the Shandong style pan fried dumplings and the classic pork & leeks dumplings, which didn't disappoint. The pan fried dumplings came in huge pieces, so that was a bonus in my book. Both well-seasoned (not too greasy), I think my palate was satiated for the day :-) They also serve other dishes to complement this dumpling vaganza. My favorites were the spicy fish soup, Mapo tofu, and beef with black pepper. Happy to come back just for the dumplings or when I want a decent Taiwanese food in the area. read more

very disappointing. some of the worst Chinese food I've had in years. couldn't tell the difference between flounder and sesame chicken. both over breaded in sticky sweet sauce, literally sticking to each piece. rice wouldn't have helped. just a mess.probably should have gotten the pig ears.... read more

Food: 4/5 Service: 3/5 Atmosphere: 4/5 Value: 4/5 Came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch with a friend and had no problem getting a table. The restaurant was a little hectic and bustling with activity, but that's typical for an establishment like this. We only got the mini soup dumplings with pork (xiao long bao) and the beef stew noodle soup w/ spinach (hong shao niu rou mian), both of which I grew up eating. The soup dumplings came out steaming hot and were fat, bursting with soup and flavor. My friend and I devoured them in a few minutes. I would say they're one of the better ones you can find in Boston as they really hit the spot! The beef noodle soup was average. It wasn't spicy at all and there could've been more veggies, but the broth was still hearty in flavor and satisfied my cravings The service was also average, but the food arrived quickly as well as the check. Good comfort food overall. Will definitely come back in the future to get the dumplings and try other dishes. read more

This place def should be 5 star. Great Chinese food, fire soup dumplings, wonton soup slaps. 10/10

good stuff: -service was very fast and waitstaff was very kind and friendly (i went at 11:30am on a thursday) -atmosphere is relaxed and contemporary while keeping some chinese themes -food was served quickly and was quite delicious can be improved: -the soup was a little too salty, but that's to be expected from a large restaurant that probably makes large quantities of soup at a time -scallion pancake was a little thick and the edges were tough on my grandma's teeth overall: next time i'm in this area, i know i can rely on this place :) read more

I come here a lot. It's great for a big group of people or when nobody can decide what they want to eat. The menu is big so there's something for everyone. My favorite dishes are the mini soup dumplings with pork, house special lamb with cumin, braised eggplant with basil, and sautéed peapod shoots with garlic. The peapod shoots tend to be expensive but if you haven't had them before you should get them because they will become your new favorite vegetable. Their food tends to lean more oily but I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here. If you come here hungry and can be seated right away the food comes super fast. There's always a line on Friday and Saturdays nights so plan accordingly. You also get a discount if you can pay cash. I think it might be 5% or something like that. Also, I really think the soup dumplings are the same as the ones at Gourmet Dumpling House in Chinatown. I've seen the boss lady at both places so if you want soup dumplings without the wait come here. read more

Not quite up to gourmet dumpling house in chinatown but a closer (to Somerville/Cambridge), well done alternative by the family. Excellent soup dumplings - large and filled with plentiful broth. Pork and chive filling. Szechuan style "anything" is fiery and palatable. Pork or fish are best choices. Sweet, hot, rich, smooth. The broth in the bowls are famous with good reason. Stick to the basics - soup dumplings and Szechuan stews and this outpost won't disappoint. Quick, friendly service. read more

I have to say, I'm pretty shocked by all the lukewarm reviews I'm reading, because Dumpling House is one of my go-to spots. Their dumplings are what I think of when I think of comfort food. I have been ordering takeout here at least once a month, as well as bringing friends to have meals at the restaurant itself. I love trying out different things from their menu, though I always have my favorites that I go back to (mango chicken is a great love of mine). This is also the restaurant that managed to make me find tofu edible (texture has always freaked me out before finding these magical chefs). If you don't know where to start with their menu, I strongly recommend pork and leek dumplings. There are so many gems on this menu, though, so go wild and try a bunch of dishes; you'll definitely find a dish that will have you returning to this neighborhood gem. read more
