I messaged a friend that I'll be in town a few hours and wanted to see if she had time to meet up. Fortunately, she was able to fit me into her busy schedule. We decided on lunch in Walnut Creek and she recommended Dumpling Hours. She's a foodie so I said that's perfect and we met up there. It was a weekday so finding parking was a breeze. Originally we decided to meet between 11-11:30am but we were both running a little late. Both of us must have been on Hawaiian time lol. When you enter, a host/hostess greets you and seats you. We got there a good time because the restaurant completely filled up shortly after we ordered. You'll enter into the front dining area and will see the kitchen in the middle. Along the hallway are tables for smaller parties and the back houses a back dining area and the restrooms. They have physical menus and you can order on your mobile. Keep in mind that you can't order alcoholic beverages online. You'll need to order directly with the server. We ordered Pork Xiao Long Bao and Hot & Spicy Pork Xiao Long Bao. They held up well and only a couple broke when peeling off the sheet. Both styles were good! I did add their chili oil to them for that extra kick. They do provide a sauce for the XLB though. Btw, the red looking sauce container is actually the spoon used to hold your XLB lol. Everything was washed down with some hot tea and glasses of red wine. However I was wrong and each time I came back I was really impressed with the food and even found myself craving it!! I've been wanting to try this restaurant ever since they opened in Walnut Creek. It's nice to finally have a Shanghainese spot in this part of Contra Costa county. I visited with my mom on a Monday afternoon and there was no wait. They don't have a designated parking lot so you can opt for street parking which may be difficult in this part of Walnut Creek or you can park at a city parking garage (1st hour, every additional hour is $1.25). The restaurant is medium size with a dining room in the front, and dining room in the back connected by a long hallway with some high tables that can seat 2 people. You can the QR code on the table to place your order. We weren't too hungry so ordered the 8 piece pork xiao long bao and the zha Jiang soybean paste noodle. The kitchen is open and separated by glass so you can watch all your food getting prepared. Order to food arrival time was short. The pork xiao long bao were huge and full of juice. The meat was fresh but the skin was a bit thin so it easily breaks if you are not careful with picking it up with your chopsticks. The noodles were only ok, a bit too salty. I would recommend sticking with their xiao long bao or maybe the steamed dumplings for first timers. You pay at the front with the receipt they taped to your table. Once my friend arrived we agreed to on crab/pork dumplings and chicken dumplings, green bean pancake, garlicky greenbeans and vegetable spring rolls. I don't think I've ever had these kind of dumplings with the liquid inside. The chicken ones were like bites of chicken soup! But too big to put the whole thing in my mouth gracefully... my friend figured out the trick. Hold it sideways and take a small bite out of the top. Completely unacceptable. She repeatedly demanded payment in Mandarin, ignoring us when we said we weren't finished. She kept pressuring and hovering until I had to raise my voice and be stern just to get basic respect. If you're not loud and firm, she will intimidate and overstep your boundaries. i discovered this place on my lunch at work one day and decided to give it a try. the service wasn't the best but the XLB were yummy so i didn't mind. I returned a few times, tried more items on the menu--loved them but still had hit or miss service. I worked at a very popular dumpling restaurant in berkeley for a year and a half so I'm super familiar with the way things are supposed to go. With that being said at Dumpling Hours you have to ask for everything! If you need napkins, if you need your water refilled, you even have to ask for the complimentary vinegar sauce that comes with the XLB. sometimes the wait time for food was less than 10 minutes and sometimes it was over 20 so i decided to start phoning in my food so it could be ready for me when i get there or come out shortly after my arrival (as i only have a 30 minute lunch). the last time i was there i ate 17 dumplings!!!! i even told my partner that i wanted it to be my birthday dinner spot with my friends and family bcus i loved the food. today i was looking forward to it ALL DAY at work, i called right before my lunch break as i normally do...and was met with the worst customer service i've ever received there. the woman on the phone would not let me place an order to eat there, she said i had to be seated in order to place my order. i let her know i do this often (as i now frequent this establishment like twice a week), she was incredibly rude and kept insinuating that i wouldn't show up and the food would just sit there(i've showed up every time i order! they tell me my table number and i go sit at it and the my food comes out and i pay) i let her know i work near by and that i was already headed over there, we went back and forth on the phone as i politely tried to explain that im on a time crunch and am trying to be proactive about ordering my food. in the end she let out an annoyed sigh and went "fine what time will you be here?" with so much attitude, i said in a few minutes! and then she stayed silent....i went "hello? so can i order please?" and she responded with "ok!" in the most irritated way. it ruined my appetite and i ultimately decided not to place my order--- genuinely bcus i never want to place an order somewhere where people are rude because you never know what they're capable of. anyway im so bummed out about this experience, i was willing to look past the mid customer service for the yummy food in the past but the rude customer service is enough for me to never want to go back. read more

So delicious! The pork 小籠包 are amazing and my partner, who is vegetarian, loves the vegetable dumplings. We also always like to get a bowl of hot and sour soup to share, as it's the perfect size for 2-3 people. The wait time for a table isn't bad usually, they have a kiosk for you to sign in and then they'll text you when your table is ready. The overall service is pretty good -- the staff are attentive and last time we ordered noodles, they even mixed it for us after setting it down on the table. We usually go on Fridays/Saturdays for dinner, so it can get a bit loud in there but overall it's a really fun experience! She and I love our dumplings, so an early Sunday lunch at Dumpling Hours just made sense, especially since they're under the same management as Dumpling Home. Full disclosure, I have never been to Dumpling Home though. Our party of four was graciously let in before their 11am opening. It was a warm day but we chose to sit inside. Ordering is easy via QR code. We ordered 1 order of shen jian bao (6 pcs) 2 large orders of xiao long bao (8 pcs), one order of spicy sesame wontons, 1 order of crushed cucumbers, and 1 order of ginger and scallion noodles. Service for the most part is pretty friendly. The restaurant started getting packed about half way through our meal. I will say the top picks were the juicy flavorful pan fried buns. They had perfectly browned bottoms and were filled with lots of delicious soup. The second fave was the crushed cucumbers. Lots of garlic with vinegar and cool crunchy cucumber pieces were so refreshing on that hot morning. The xiao long bao were filled with plenty of soup but the meat and broth weren't super flavorful. The scallion noodles were bland, and the spicy sesame wontons weren't our jam, we think it would've been better with a vinegar-soy based spicy sauce instead. The prices here are on par with their SF locations. Basic decor but a clean restaurant. Narrow walkway to the bathroom opens up to some more inside seating, and there are several tables outside with some shade. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but if I were craving SJB and needing to meet up in East Bay, it may be suggested for a casual lunch. Get there early or be prepared to wait! Parking seems like it could be a bit difficult in the area, but we got lucky with a spot a block up. We had both and when I go back again, I would probably skip the standard XLB for the truffle XLB. Note, the price reflects its more refined flavor. On both XLB, this is probably one of the best if not the best dumpling skin. It was thin but not so thin that the juices run out. Becareful of the hot soup inside the XLB. The other items were of average quality with nothing notable to write about or complain about. Service The service was efficient with someone getting water and table setup before they took us to the table. You can order through your phone using the QR code on the table. They brought the food pretty quickly. Ambiance It's a standard restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. This place is smaller so it can be challenging for parties of 10 or more. Price/Value I think the prices and quality are on par. As noted above, the Truffle XLB are way better but the price is higher as well. Overall, this is a great lunch place. Very juicy and the texture of the dumplings were pleasant. Durable and not too thick! The broth was a shocking mix of chicken and pork flavors. This is some of the best XLB up and down the entire west coast of the USA. I see others compare it to places like Din Tai Fung, but this is better. I've tried pretty much every dumpling restaurant I can find in California (SoCal and NorCal) and in Seattle and this place beats them all hands down. The spicy pork dumplings and perfectly seasoned, giving them a little kick and an aromatic flavor that fills your mouth but not so spicy that it masks the flavor. Perfecting spiciness is an art. The black truffle dumplings are mouthwateringly delicious, same with the crab dumplings. They aren't cheap, they are good, no...better than good, they are amazing. The shrimp loofah's are also worthy of a mention, not an XLB but a delightfully flavorful dumpling with a wonderfully unique and chunky texture. These guys are artists, genuine masters of their craft. If you want artisanal XLB, dumplings and other delicious dishes this THE place to go. Edit: had to add something here after seeing someone state in their review that the XLB here don't keep their form. If this is how you judge your XLB, don't eat here, 99 Ranch is probably more your speed. Good XLB should have thin dough, so that it feels like it melts away in your mouth, but the dough needs to be strong enough to not burst when you pick it up and let the soup escape. If you like thin, strong dough that melts away as you bite into it, this is the place to go. Also they are well formed with tight pleats at the top, and like all good XLB the base sags out a bit. If you want a rubbery XLB that keep its shape like a siu mai then you are in the wrong place :D read more

Within five minutes of us paying our check, we were approached by one of the female workers asking us to hurry and leave because people are waiting. We were seated for maybe 40 minutes, tops having spent $140. Then, they seem to expect a 20% tip for no real service other than food delivery. Disappointing! Need to find a new dumpling place.
