Unique food all around but I enjoyed immensely. Their vinegar tops that off because they have a little sugary twist. Their menu is huge and we almost ordered 1 dish from every section - we picked 7 and almost 8 until the waitress kindly less us know we'd ordered enough for the 2 of us Most interesting item for me was crispy tofu but all were tasty - need to get the salted egg yolk chicken wing next time read more

A true hidden gem! Dumpling Era in San Bruno is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall treasure. Every dish I've tried here is an absolute 10/10--seriously, not a single miss. Their spicy wontons are out of this world--perfectly tender, flavorful, and with just the right kick. And the spicy green beans? Addicting. I could eat them every day. You can taste the love and authenticity in every bite. It's the kind of spot you almost don't want to tell people about because you want to keep it all to yourself, but they absolutely deserve the praise. read more

I spent a lot of time sitting in my car on El Camino real in Millbrae, looking on Yelp trying to figure out which of the dozen or more Chinese restaurants in the area were most favored. And I narrowed it down to Dumpling Era. Even though I wasn't wanting dumplings right then, just basic Chinese food, the reviews were really good. So I decided to get my standards, chow mein and Kung Pao. For me, with chicken, I'm a bit of a snob and only like chicken breast. Unfortunately, a lot of Chinese restaurants only carry dark meat, and Dumpling Era is no exception. So my second choice is always shrimp and so I got shrimp chow mein and Kung Pao shrimp. Folks, the chow mein is absolutely out of this world! So many chow meins I've had in this area are flavorless, or the noodles don't taste fresh or are overcooked, or the sauce they use tastes weird, even sometimes like ketchup. But not at Dumpling Era! They have one of the best chow meins I've ever had in my life! It actually has kind of a smoky flavor, which might be because they put those long stringy mushrooms in there. And the noodles taste so FRESH, like they were just made, and have a wonderful "al dente" texture. SO good! The Kung Pao, however, was a little bit of a disappointment for me. Kung Pao can be made in so many different ways, and this one is one that has a particular type of sauce that I didn't love. Don't get me wrong, completely edible, and I think some people will actually like it a lot, depending upon their taste... I just have a particular liking for it in a different style and there's a place I go to in downtown SF for that (DM me if you want to know what that is). But I'm not taking away any stars for that as that's just a matter of personal preference, and I think they do a really great job here and I will be coming back again and again for the chow mein and will try some other dishes as well. read more

The food was all right. Nothing special but reasonably priced. Will come back to try more items. A bit of a surprise to get a paper plate, plastic spoon, disposable chopstick and small plastic container (for sauce) as your setting when you sit down. Oooohhh-kayyyy... So we ordered the following: chicken and chive dumplings 3/5: Was this freshly made? You see the lady sitting there patiently wrapping a bunch of dumplings but which one was she wrapping? Couldn't help but wonder if it was a frozen pack that they just boiled. san tung like chicken 3/5: If it had tasted like san tung we'd be there all the time. Sadly, it was nothing like san tung (maybe that's a good thing or they'd get in trouble with san tung!). The chicken had batter on it and it was too sour to be san tung. Oh well. Back to the city we go for that! 7 color deep fried tofu 3/5: Super crispy but didn't see the 7 colors. A bit spicy for the first bite but you get used to it. Really just fried tofu with spices. Eh. pan fried shanghai dumpling 3/5: There was juice in it. Not the best I've had, but not the worse. They seem to have regulars come in all the time and their taro root bun that someone at another table ordered looked intriguing. Maybe we ordered wrong so I think we'll give it another try... read more

Quick take: grimy The table tops, all the sauce and chili holders, and tea pot are really dirty and sticky. The walls are dirty with splatters of sauce and chili sauce. This place needs a good pressure wash. The Shanghai dumplings (6) weren't good. I do not recommend this item. I did like the pork, shrimp, and chive dumplings (12) and the chicken dumplings (12). I would recommend takeout if you would like to try the food. 10% off for cash paying customers. read more

The one star represents the delivery company they use. I love their food but getting it delivered to me is a whole new ordeal. I live 15 minutes away from them but in a condo complex with multiple buildings. I put pretty explicit directions but they just can't find my building. My last order was dumped in the lobby of another building. Delivery person texted me he 'delivered' it. Luckily someone in a building next to me found it & called me. So until Dumpling Era uses another delivery service I will not be enjoying their food. read more

Decent noodles and dumplings, not too far away from SFO for those travelers coming in. Sparsely decorated inside and parking isn't great but the food is good and it's open fairly late for this area. The dumplings here are good, and I often order to go rather than dine in. The food is decent overall, but the to-go orders can sometimes be inconsistent, especially the fried items. They tend to get soggy when packed in the box. I like the beef roll, but I wish the cucumber was sliced thinner so it would be easier to bite and chew. Overall, not bad, and just a bit of feedback for improvement. read more

My order of dumplings were covered in a very thick coat of flour with moderate veggie stuffing (it was mostly cabbage), soy sauce smelled funny (seemed spoiled) and veg lo mein noodles were too oily. I ordered Door Dash from here, I am in a hotel due to a canceled flight. Was craving spicy wontons. I ordered the Szechuan wontons because they are spicy. I was kind of bummed they didn't come in a chili oil like I had assumed. I also ordered Dan Dan noodles, it was my first time eating Dan Dan noodles so I have nothing to compare it to. But the sauce is very rich. I mixed some in with the wontons and it was really good. But eating the noodles with the sauce is super rich, the peanut sauce is very thick and I would have liked more chili oil to thin it out. I had this delivered to a hotel and I wish they would have checked because I didn't have napkins or utensils. I ended up turning coffee stirrers into chopsticks (albeit short) so it's been messy! read more

Great spot for dumplings and more. Came here after flying into SFO and the place was pretty empty. It's a typical Chinese spot with some tables turned into take out prep station. We ordered the pork, cabbage and shrimp, and pork & dill dumplings, lamb noodle soup, and hot & sour soup, and spicy beef tendon. The dumplings were great, the outside was substantial and the filling was fairly large, just like home made dumplings. I really liked the dill, though I'm used to having more dill inside (how parents make them). The lamb noodle soup was a bit bland for me, but it's pretty standard for southern style food. The beef tendon was thinly cut and had great texture, the portion is large for 9$. I liked the hot and sour soup, must be from a can, but just how I like it. The waiting staff is great and we also got a few bags of frozen dumplings. They were cheaper than south Bay and was a great deal overall. read more

This place isn't fancy. But it doesn't need to be. What stands out here is the food and for that alone, I can give this place 5 stars. I'm always down for Dumplings and when he asked what I felt like eating while walking around downtown San Bruno, I spied with my little eyes this unassuming restaurant called "Dumpling Era" from across the street. He asked if I was sure because there were several other little restaurants within walking distance. I said, "Nope, we're eating there." Decisiveness is not always my strong suit especially when it comes to picking places to eat. I'm pretty proud of myself for saying 'yes' right away. Why? Because I was rewarded with Chinese food that was delicious with a home cooked feel. Here are the dishes we ordered: **Black Fungus Salad with Cucumber $7.50: How else to describe this except that it's cold, refreshing and a perfect appetizer. I've had black fungus several times in the past from my lovely Chinese friend that would make it for me when I would come visit her. Sadly she moved to Washington so I don't get this stuff home cooked anymore. I don't know how else to describe it except that it's wonderful to eat. It's classified as a mushroom but it doesn't taste like regular mushrooms that we eat.. It's completely different. For one, it's black and it's transparent. It's just a tad more rubbery but don't mistake that for being chewy. It's not. I love this stuff and will have it anytime. **Pork and Shrimp Dumpling with Chives $9: 12 pieces came with this order and all I can say is that these guys were yummy. Dipped them in just a little bit of soy sauce and they were good to go. Tender pork and shrimp + chives steam cooked for your pleasure. (If you walked up to the front counter, you can see a dumpling maker doing her thing.) **Garlic Green Beans $9: They said that these would be spicy but to be honest they were on the mild side for me. I could probably have eaten these as a meal in itself because I love green beans. Anything with garlic when pan fried + tossed is going to be bomb. These green beans did not disappoint with the garlic and seasoning. They were done just right so that the they weren't too soft. They had a little bit of crunch to them and they tasted even better as leftovers the next day. **Beef Knife Cut Noodle $9.50: So much yes. If you like Pad See Ew noodles, you are going to love these. Thick noodles mixed in with thinly sliced cuts of beef and I was in heaven. Mix in the bean sprouts, shredded carrots, black fungus + bok choy and it was love. These noodles and Thai Pad See Ew are probably on par with each other in my book. If you've read this far down, I think you'll know that I'll definitely come back here. They'll give you 10% off if you pay with cash only. The server failed to let us know in the beginning so I walked down to the ATM which was a few blocks away. I couldn't even take a star off for that because we both agreed that our server could have told us before the meal instead of after. Too late, I was already a fan. After eating all that (even though we shared) a walk was exactly what I needed to burn off some calories. read more

Tried this place for the 1st time last week. I must have passed this place hundreds of times without giving it a thought. I'm not very smart. I love dumplings and ever since my Go To dumpling place in Bruno changed their menu, I've been lost in the wilderness without so much as a compass. I'll cut to the chase: I found my new dumpling place. Everything there was very good. A few gym buddies and I crushed several dishes and did not leave anything but empty plates. I was quite impressed because it was such an unassuming place. It isn't fancy inside. However, the food: excellent. I grabbed a takeout menu because I plan to place a big, shameful order and eat it at home...by myself. For your viewing pleasure... read more

Very good. I have been on a mission to try new foods. I read that this place had marinated pig ears so I figured I would give them a try. My thoughts: After maintaining an open mind and experiencing these with my mouth rather than my mind, I can say this - Delicious! The crunch is totally unique. A bit like calamari, a bit like tripe, but definitely identifiable as cartilage... But it was NOT like suddenly biting into a chunk of cartilage while eating chicken (which I dislike). This was very straight-forward and predictable. As a Westerner, it's rare to sit down and eat such a large amount of collagen. The American diet could benefit from including less boring-ass chicken breast and more offal meats. There's more to food. Everything I ordered was delicious. Not terribly greasy. Well seasoned but not overly salty. Reasonable pricing. I will be coming back. read more

I was having such a bad day and it was already 9pm, so I was frantically searching yelp for some noodles to make it better. I ordered the beef knife cut noodles (I wanted lamb, but the bf doesn't like lamb--grief is truly the price we pay for love). o(〒〒)o Upon opening the lid in the car, the car started and it swooshed onto me (I was a passenger). I was naive to think the day couldn't get any worse. When I took the first bite along with blasting one of my fave songs, it was like a much needed hug. The noodles were thin and chewy. I added some chili oil and their spicy sauce to enhance the flavor even more. Even though it was already really oily, the addition of chili oil over the noodles hit the spot for me. I also ordered the sweet soybean milk yum. Would love to come back and try their dumplings and salted egg yolk chicken wings. This is certainly a hole in the wall restaurant. However do not let the looks deceive you. Wait staff was friendly and food was served hot. The soup dumplings were the best I have ever had. The outside was thick and held the soup inside. Jelly Fish was tasty with just the right amount of sesame oil. I would have given 5 stars if the dining area was nicer and did not feel like a cafeteria. Just my opinion. read more

Wow. Definitely a hole in the wall. Although the interior of this place is pretty gritty, old and rundown looking, the food is quite the opposite. Just to give you an idea, the flooring was so messed up, one of the employees tripped while we were there. He was ok, but I do hope they their floor and other parts of the restaurant. If you aren't easily put off by crappy looking settings, and can be solely focused on good food, you're ready to stop in at Dumpling Era! Came here with the fam on our way from SFO to Monterey. Thankfully this place was open late, had veg options and was... well, great Chinese food. Two of my cousins, former Bay Area residents have been living out of state and away from the comforts of Chinese food. We ordered all vegetarian/vegan items, enough for four people (sorry if I botch the menu names) -hot & spicy cucumber -tofu noodle -scallion pancake -7 color tofu -boiled veg dumplings -pan fried veg dumplings -veg pot stickers We had nothing leftover and everyone was very satisfied. The dish I want to highlight is the 7 color tofu. The seasoning on this crispy tofu tasted like Japanese shichimi combined with Szechuan peppers. It had complex spices and was super tasty! It's not your run of the mill fried tofu. I highly recommend it! The rest of the dishes were pretty par and perfectly comforting. They weren't mind blowing or to die for but sometimes what you want is that thing that is made just right and familiar. These dishes definitely hit the spot! read more

Came with a friend on a Sunday for lunch. The restaurant is kind of on the smaller side, but it wasn't super crowded and we were able to get a seat immediately. We ordered the beef roll pancake, the shanghai soup dumplings, and the pork shrimp dumpling with green chives. The beef roll pancake had a really thick green onion pancake layer that had a nice texture, but it was unfortunately relatively tasteless apart from the sauce in the roll. Each piece came with two thick-cut pieces of beef and a chunk of cucumber. I'm used to more thinly sliced ingredients in beef rolls, so I wasn't a super huge fan. It was decent though, and probably the best of the three things we ordered. The shanghai soup dumplings came on a plate, which was a little...disorienting? I've never had my soup dumplings not come in a bamboo steamer. Anyways, the skin of the dumplings was on the thicker side and there wasn't too much soup in them. They also came kind of lukewarm. Not really that great, wouldn't recommend. The pork shrimp dumpling with green chives lacked flavor and could have used more salt. As my friend said, she could taste the texture of the shrimp but not the shrimp itself, and I would agree. There was an option to get 12 of these boiled or 10 pan-fried, and we forgot to ask for them pan-fried so we tried the boiled version. Maybe go for pan-fried? Or just skip this item. The service was good, and the waitress was helpful. Street parking is available nearby, but you might have to walk a block or two. Probably wouldn't come back based on the food we had, but maybe there's a hidden gem on the menu we've yet to discover. read more

Pretty decent hole in the wall biz for dumps/wings when you're don't want to make the trek to dtf or San Tung. The seafood cuttlefish dumps were actually quite good. I appreciate the added touch of them flavoring their dumps w the squid ink. The flavor of the spicy wontons was really tasty, I would definitely recommend that! The San Tung wings were very crispy, but the taste was not really similar to San Tung IMO. It has more of an orange chicken flavor, but it gets the job done when I'm craving San Tung! *tip: they have a homemade orange hot sauce that is BOMB, but extremely spicy so be careful! read more

Sometimes you chance upon a place, have low expectations, find the spot and service to be mediocre and then...the food blows you away. That's what happened here! We were headed to the city and decided to get dumplings and Yelp brought up here. This is a total hole in the wall. The table was dirty and grimy and the waitress was stressed. My flight from EWR to SFO came in late. There was not too many restaurants open after I picked up my rental car. Within 5 min of driving, I was here for a late dinner since they stay open till 9:30. There are so many different kinds of dumplings to order from, so I picked out some ingredient that I had not tasted before. The cucumber was delicious with garlic fully blended in. The beef was a little bit dry to my taste, but it goes with great with their homemade chili paste. The dumplings were hot and delicious. Definitely worth coming back for other flavors. read more

So I just moved to San Bruno and tonight was my 2nd time here. First time I ordered in and waited 45 minutes for my food. The lady there was really unfriendly but didn't think much of it so I just ate my food and left. So this time I was "smarter" and went online to order ahead to avoid the 45 min wait for food. So I ordered my food ahead and arrived to pick it up and when I went to sit down she said you cannot eat here. I was like what? She said take out no eat here. There was no one in the restaurant and plenty of tables, wth? I mean do they really want to lose a customer for no reason? Anyways, rating for service. Also their dumplings are ok but not the best, and I don't really recommend their noodle soup, there isn't much taste. In any case as a principle I won't be coming here anymore. read more

Waitress was kind and attentive. Dumplings were the great homemade-type, not too fancy, just yummy :) I would say it's worth the price $60 (including tip) could feed 5 people. Ambiance was a little yuck due to the visible clutter and unclean walls/floors, faded decor, but it could be a charming hole in the wall, I suppose. We did notice we were the only ones that dined in while everyone else got food to-go (maybe because of reasons aforementioned). Paper plates and disposable utensils were served, which is fine, more sanitary for people. Street parking was easy to find during late dinner time on a Thursday night. This was definitely hit or miss and not just because it was takeout. I profusely searched for beef noodle soup for 10 mi radius around Millbrae and Dumpling Era kept showing. I saw beautiful pictures of chili wontons, beef noodle soup, dumplings, and Dan Dan noodles. I was sold! As usual, I ordered directly from the restaurant so the they'd avoid 3rd party fees. One huge con - you can't order ahead, so you must order for ASAP. I ordered $140 worth of food. It was ready in 30 min. Note that their noodles, onion pancakes, and dumplings are super freshly made (for the most part). It's worth upgrading to knife cut noodles for $1! But there are some dishes to avoid... I got the following: Beef pancake roll - 4/5 Crispy green onion pancake with beef and cucumber inside. It had a nice crisp! Egg green onion pancake - 4/5 Green onion pancake - 5/5 Noticing all carbs are pretty good here.. 7 color crispy tofu - 5/5 Easily my favorite! It's packed with flavor and had a nice crisp. If you get it as takeout pop it in the toaster oven. So good. Seafood dumplings with black squid ink - 4/5 Pretty standard and fresh. Ask for extra dumpling sauce! They don't give a lot. Sesame noodle - 4/5 This flavoring was to die for. Slight kick, rich sesame flavor, perfect seasoning. It's worth upgrading to fresh; knife cut noodles for $1. The noodle it came with seemed to be previously refrigerated and old. Surprise crispy seafood dumplings - 3.5/5 This could have been so, so good. The peel was hard (not because it was takeout - we ate immediately.) but oh man if you get past that it is really delish inside, and so is the sauce. Chili wontons - 2/5 The worst I've ever had. No red chili oil, no flavor, they were basically in soy sauce. Looked nothing like the photo. Dan Dan noodle - 2/5 I think they forgot to give us the sauce. I got two orders of noodle with a tiny bit of pork and veggies with zero sauce...it looked nothing like on Yelp. Beef noodle soup - 3/5 This was pretty standard. The soup tasted a tiny bit watered down. But noodles were high quality and fresh. Dry sautéed green beans - 5/5 Just the way I like them! Cooked well and the right flavoring. All in all I'd order dumplings (but avoid the wontons), crispy tofu, sesame noodles, and green beans again! read more

Ordered take out from here one night through their website, which was very easy to navigate. Husband and I decided to share an order of their pork/chive dumplings and a braised lamb noodle soup. However, it took a bit for them to service me and give me my food. Maybe I should have waved my hands like crazy when I got there? The dumplings were pretty good! The flavors were nice! They gave us a container of vinegar and chili sauce with it. The braised lamb noodle soup was decent as well. The noodles were a perfect texture and the lamb pieces weren't tough at all.
