Came here for lunch on a Saturday with my son and husband. We were seated right away. I've never been here and I was surprised to see that they have like a second floor loft area. We ordered the XLB 10 piece, wonton noodle soup and salt and pepper calamari. I saw that they had HK milk tea so I decided to get a hot Hk milk tea. I love the fry and crisp on the salt and pepper calamari however, I felt like it was under seasoned a bit. XLB was delicious and juicy. The wonton noodle soup was pretty solid with 5 half pieces of bok choy and 5 won tons. My son usually doesn't like to eat meat, but he ate three servings of the XLB. Back when New Hing Lung used to call this place home, I had some rather mixed feelings about it. The first few times I ate there were decent, followed by a really poor experience, and ending with a mildly positive one. So, after seeing that Dumpling Bites had taken over this long vacant space, I was cautiously optimistic - excited because it's always awesome to see another dumpling spot open up, but skeptical since they never seemed all that busy the few times I passed by after their grand opening. However, after hearing some of my relatives rave about this place after they came here during the holidays, we knew we had to come here to check this place out for ourselves! Although the interior of this place doesn't look all that different from its predecessor, nearly everything about Dumpling Bites feels like an improvement. Not only does everything feel cleaner, but the workers are so much nicer and the menu feels vastly improve. Granted, New Hing Lung had a couple of dishes we enjoyed, but it's nice to see so many varieties of dumplings, baos, and buns to choose from, as well as a variety of entrees, noodle dishes, noodle soups, and rice plates, in the event you're looking for something a bit heftier to eat. -- XIAO LONG BAO These were awesome! Each dumpling was decently plump with a rich soup in them and I loved how the fillings were so porky. Definitely one of the best I've had in a long time. -- STEAMED PORK & NAPA CABBAGE DUMPLINGS Ehh...this was fine. In hindsight, we probably should've got a dumpling dish that was pan-fried, if only for a textural change, but I had a bigger issue with the filling. While the skin was fine, the filling had a lot more cabbage than pork and wasn't super juicy. -- BROCCOLI BEEF RICE PLATE Nothing spectacular, but no less solid. The portion was just okay for the money, but the broccoli was surprisingly fresh and the cuts of beef were actually quite tender. I just wish there had been more meat in the dish. -- SALT & PEPPER FISH FILLETS It's not hard to love fried fish, but whatever - I LOVED this dish! The pieces of fish were super crispy, moist on the inside, and I love how they weren't overly salted/seasoned. So good! -- PORK & SHRIMP SHUMAI This was just okay. I liked that each shumai was decently meaty and there was a fair amount of shrimp and pork in this. However, for whatever reason, the shumai didn't feel all that hefty either, for better or worse. -- DRY FRIED CHICKEN WINGS Not nearly as good as the ones at San Tung (true for most out there), but this was still pretty good. The batter on the wings wasn't too heavy and the chicken was really moist. Plus, I like that the sauce wasn't too sweet or spicy. -- SHANGHAI STYLE PAN FRIED PORK BUNS This was great! The buns had a lightly browned crust, but, more importantly, the bun had just the right thickness (not too bready nor too light) and there was a fair amount of soup in these as well. -- DRY FRIED BEEF CHOW FUN This is one of the measuring stick dishes my family often gets and it didn't disappoint. While we certainly wouldn't have minded a larger portion, the noodles had a nice bite to them and the dish, as a whole, wasn't as greasy as others we've come across. -- FIVE SPICE BEEF BRISKET NOODLE SOUP with Choice of Noodles (Thin Rice Noodles) Admittedly, this just looked okay but the brisket wasn't anywhere near as tough as I thought it was going to be. The ratio of meat and veggies to noodles was awesome too, but I wish they had fresh or hand/knife cut noodle options. -- POTSTICKERS I wasn't necessarily expecting much, but this was still better than I thought it would be. While I wish it had a harder crust on the bottom, the filling was delicious and I liked how relatively plump each piece was. As you could probably tell, across several dishes we've tried, one thing that we noticed was that the portions felt a little light. Not in the sense of it being overpriced, as the prices felt proportionate to what you get, but we certainly wouldn't have minded more to share. Granted, you could also argue that it means you have more space to try more, but I don't want to have to get two plates of the salt and pepper fish fillets either! All in all, between how much we've enjoyed the majority of what we've tried, the friendly workers, and the fact that this place is so convenient to get to, Dumpling Bites has quickly worked its way into our rotation of regular spots, whether it be for larger family get togethers or just a casual spot for a quick and easy meal! This is that quintessential neighborhood Chinese joint, the kind of place where you can basically order anything and they have it. The food is consistently solid, if sometimes just a tiny bit oily or heavy (though some might find that a plus, lol.) Seating is better than you'd expect from street level - stairs lead to a spacious upstairs seating area with large tables and big windows letting in a lot of natural light. We've eaten here twice in the last two months, and this review is based on both visits. The hot food dishes are excellent and portions are generous. We particularly liked the dry cooked beef chow fun, salt and pepper fried chicken, and their honey walnut prawns, as well as their soup with beef and cilantro. We also tried a number of different dumplings as this is literally in their name, and were generally very happy with everything we tried. The steamed bbq pork buns are solid and done right. Service was attentive and overall this is a great place. While this isn't like the very best Chinese food in SF - for what this place is, your go-to local Chinese joint - it's great. I'm guessing because it was a Sunday, street parking is scarce., especially in a residential neighborhood. Now for their awesome food! The milk was very refreshing and tasted fresh; the donut had a nice crispy and airy inside. The pork with preserved vegetable rice cake felt so homey and had plenty of flavor. The soup was very fresh, flavorful, and hit the spot for us. Green onion pancakes were crispy, but not greasy. The wonton/dumplings were freshly made in house, the dumplings even came out in the steamer they use to cook it. Dim Sum Dreams After a Golden Gate Park Run Totally stumbled on this spot after driving in from Sacramento to run Golden Gate Park starting at Ocean Beach. Yes, we went all in. No regrets. Literally everything hit. The flavors were bold, portions generous, and nothing felt overly greasy or heavy. If we had to be picky, the shu mai and ribs weren't our faves (still solid, just not as standout), and we probably could've done just fine with two servings of rice. I am a beef chow fun lover, and this one was definitely top of list. All of us agreed the eggplant, string beans and wings were faves too. Overall?
