Why can't I find a place like this down here in the cities? We stopped because it was recommended by a person we met on the North Shore, boy was she right! I walked in and found a very competent barista explaining the intricacies of their coffee blends; when I went to use the bathroom I overheard two employees having a "coffee talk" and discussing the flavor profiles of today's brewed coffee. It was exciting to find a coffee house where the employees were obviously excited about coffee. My latte was fantastic, and it was enjoyable watching the person working the bar create my drink. I left with a pound of Jose Florez from El Salvador, pricey but worth every penny! The next morning on my way out of town from Two Harbors, I passed the chain coffee stores and drove out of my way to take one final trip to Duluth coffee company. 100% this will be an every time stop when I visit Duluth. Duluth Coffee Company makes a pretty good cuppa, I will give them that. It's not fancy, but it gets the job done. I really enjoy that they offer their own roasted beans by the bag and that the sizes are small, medium and large (seriously, who orders a venti anything?.... moving on...) My particular favorite here is the Cafe Miel, which is a lovely light and sweet latte made with honey. I also really enjoy that they always feature some art from local artists and photographers on the walls. Coffee can take awhile coming out, but I am willing to wait. Prices are reasonable and generally slightly cheaper than a particular green and white logoed competitor down the street. The staff seemed happy and were joking around with each other - they clearly wanted to be there which is always good. They took their craft seriously too - the coffees were both delicious and well made. The prices were a little steep but we expected that - hopefully it's because they are playing their employees well. I was happy to see a guy with a dog get to come in and order - he didn't stay but I would have been sad if they had made the dog stay outside in the cold. I love animal friendly places. Location CLOSED until further notice. Such a bummer because we've always made this a staple on our trips to Duluth so I hope they're able to open again. Another coffeeshop in the area the day before had a shortage of staff due to a COVID outbreak so not sure if this is more temporarily tied to that or a larger problem of low traffic in the downtown Duluth area. This could have been a last minute closure due to possible staff contamination so I'm not faulting the fact that not all social sites have been updated and will be giving my rating based on previous experiences. Went on a busy Sunday, and they did not call out the orders by customer name but by drink order which led to an awkward interaction of me mistakenly taking someone else's coffee. The baristas asked me to give it back and then gave it to a the correct customer who was 2 customers behind me in the 1 general waiting line they had. This was such a lovely little coffee shop in Duluth. We stopped in for a quick cup of tea before heading to Gooseberry Falls, and I was pleasantly surprised by their DELICIOUS chai latte. I had been searching for a good chai for the past week, and none of the chai in Minneapolis was doing the trick for me. I had nearly given up when we stumbled into this wonderful shop for a much-needed kick of caffeine. The latte was clearly made with care and was done perfectly. The flavors and spices were on point without being cloyingly sweet, and the perfect amount of milk was stirred in so that it complemented the chai rather than overwhelm it. They roast their own stuff here and the staff was very knowledgeable about all of their products (I felt inquisitive for some reason). My delicious drink reminded me of iced lattes from Peet's (which I miss from living on the West Coast, and for some reason has locations in Chicago but not the Twin Cities). If you like local coffee, this might be your place. The beans are roasted before your very eyes, and it smells like heaven. I like many of their menu items and find several to be unique for the area. The blueberry specialty coffee is worth a special stop to try. I would like to see them carry more food as they don't have the pastries or food complements I've come to expect with coffee shops. They do, however, carry Love Creamery ice cream, which is the bomb-diggity and *all* that. Honestly, about half the time I go there, it's for the ice cream. On another note, I really wish they didn't feature so much dark themed artwork. It's awesome that they feature local artists, but I don't want to see nude art, for example, as has been on display for most of Summer '18. If you are going for the beans and not the brews, nearly everywhere in Duluth carries Duluth Coffee Co. beans, and you could probably save a trip and some parking fare by buying beans elsewhere. read more
