I don't even like smoked meat (kids love it). I chose the place simply because I can't stand every fish is fried around here, yes I hate fried fish even more. Both destroy the flavor of fresh fish, fried even more. But I am very impressed with the deli smoked white fish, it has good texture and flavor (a bit too salty), like the mackerels grilled but smoked gives it more tenderness. These are the best sandwiches we've ever had- and we make a point to stop when in Duluth every time because of it! The smoked meat is simply amazing and all of the sandwiches we've had (Spring Roll, mmMmm, Cajun Finn, and Fluffy Bunny) are creative combinations of delicious veggies, condiments, and protein. But for real, I've never had a bad sandwich at this place and I'm willing to wait 45 minutes to order and eat a sandwich from here. This is a destination restaurant in northern Minnesota for sure. I rank them with Fitgers and New Scenic Cafe on my short list. Not to mention Louie's. Cajun Finn and Pastrami Mommy were my most recent jams. Don't forget chips and drinks the first time through, because there is only one line of hangry tourists waiting to order. Ordered the Northern Bagel (traditional smoked Atlantic salmon, served on a toasted traditional bagel, slathered with scallion cream cheese). Was surprised at how good the sandwich was, that I came back and bought 1 lb's worth of smoked salmon to bring back home with me to the Twin Cities. The line is kind of long, took about 5-10 minutes to get to the counter. I got "the cold one" wich consisted of lettuce, cranberry mayo, maple smoked turkey, and tomato! I also got the potato salad as a side and it was some of the best potato salad I've ever had! Coming to Duluth on a whim we didn't know where to eat. There's so many options here especially at the DeWitt-Seitz Marketplace. We decided on Northern Waters Smokehaus. And I'm so glad that we did! Immediately from entering I can tell that this place was the place to be. They had a long line and the majority of the tables filled with customers. That must be a good sign! One of the "must visit" places any time I'm in the Duluth area. It's a cute sandwich shop and deli in the basement of a touristy section of Canal Park. The service is always amazingly friendly and quick. They've got a ton of sandwich options and the deli case is loaded with top tier smoked seafood, dips, cheeses, and anything you would want to make a snaking board. They also have live music most evenings so you could grab dinner and stick around for a show. The Sitka Sushi sandwich had a really flavorful kimchi and aioli but that's ended up totally blowing the lox flavor out of the water. Don't know if I'd get it again since I like to taste the salmon. Am I crazy, or are these sandwiches prices steep? This used to be a favorite to stop at when going to the North Shore, but each time I come back since 2017 I leave a little disappointed. There's no dispute - the flavors and ingredient combinations are delicious. Their smoked fish and meats are great. $16 for a small sandwich - not even well-filled - and no sides has just gotten too steep for my taste. I'd gladly pay that for a denser sandwich and a side of cheap chips and a pickle, but this just isn't a filling meal on its own. Even the salmon pate dip was shockingly pricey. This most recent time we were there, they'd converted their space into a pick-up window only, which limited the experience as well. We couldn't see any of the smoked fish or dips, so it was hard to know what else we wanted to get. Sadly, I'm just not sure I'll stop here again after a few too many disappointing sandwiches. read more

I didn't think I'd like it but the brown sugar mixed with the Smokey fish was a really great combo! I've been to multiple events where there has been Northern Water's Smokehouse food has been served, but this is my first sandwich. I've been holding onto a gift card and decided today's the day. I had a hard time choosing, but I went with Cedar's Secret as I was in the mood for a wrap. The naan it's served on holds the moisture at bay and wasn't the least bit soggy. The sriracha is just enough to give it a hint of heat without being overpowering and stealing the flavors from the star of the show, the turkey. Delicious flavor, not too smoky and with that hint of maple, the flavors meld nicely, and you can't beat sweet heat. My only note, and it's not enough to dock a star is that for a $17+ sandwich (tax and online ordering convenience fee), kettle chips included or something of the sort would have been a great accompaniment. The food was excellent. Cute place to dine. However, we went to make a to go order. Very hard to make a pickup online. They cater to their in store customers first which totally makes sense to me. We were there on a cloudy Tuesday and business was just picking up. I had to try the Cajun Finn that everyone was raving about. It was delicious.
