Accidentally found this place on maps. Tip: always zoom in and out in an area when looking for food as the buttons seem to pop at different "elevations". SO glad I stopped. I had the special, a simple cheeseburger and fries. Simple it was not. This will now be my go-to place for a burger whenever I'm in town. The burger is never frozen, the fries are real and fresh cut (but they do it right and soak them in water). OMG, I was expecting a typical flat little burger and a half a dozen bites of fries...oh no, bring your appetite my friend! The burger was juicy and thick but also fully cooked. The fries were divine! They were golden brown with a perfect crisp, skin on for flavor, and not too skinny nor thick AND didn't leave me wanting more. I ALWAYS want more fries. I made the mistake of saying "no" to tomato and lettuce and onion. They are usually a little limp leaf of nearly white lettuce and a paper thin slice of lacy flavorless wet tomato. Nope, not here. I saw them preparing other baskets as I was sitting at the counter awaiting my order...the fixings were thick, bright, and crunchy! Don't skip it. I'm also super excited to try their other dinner selections like meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. I have a hunch the potatoes won't be instant. I'm curious about breakfast too, although I'm never in town that early. They have a small selection of desserts as well. They also serve my favorite root beer, 1919, along with 1919 cream soda which I didn't even know they had! Just like the quality and quantity of food, the service is what I remember it used to be. I was greeted with a genuine warm and welcome smile. I wad given an appropriate amount of time to decide before being pestered multiple times. My questions were answered without a look of annoyance and I wasn't made to feel like a bother. The small talk was personable and appropriate. Service sets the tone and I felt comfortable and belonging. The ONLY reason I didn't give it 5 stars was it kinda yucked me out nobody wore gloves at any point. Grabbing fistful of potatoes out of a bucket of water would require a type of dishwashing glove, and I get that they are fried in hot oil so that didn't bother me as much. It was more the handling the raw fixings without gloves and noting that the lettuce (as beautiful as it was), and I'm assuming the other vegetables, we're not washed prior. I don't think many restaurants do for the reason of preparation speed and ingredient longevity. That part bothers me everywhere because all I can think of is pesticides and germs. I don't typically end on a less than positive note but, I knew this one was going to be lengthy and people's attention spans short. I lied, I will say this...I left very happy and satisfied and NOT smelling of grease! In summary, GO! read more

My son and I ate here while we were visiting. The restaurant is tucked in the end of a shopping center, so it's easy to find. There was adequate seating and the staff was very friendly. My son thought he could eat more than he could, so I ended up eating his as a leftover and will review both items here. When our burgers came, my first thought was amazement at the amount of fries that come with it. Absolutely huge portion and delicious! As for the burger, I got theBig Mama Burger. It came with a 1/3 pound patty, cheese, and ham with BBQ on the side. The ham was a bit fatty for my particular taste, but the burger was very flavorful and filling. My son got the BBQ Bacon Burger. We are from out of town and after we rode the Duluth River train, we pulled up the gps map to look for some restaurants in the area. We drove by a few that didn't look as interesting as we thought they would, and then decided to try this one, even though it was way away from where we were it looked like a good menu. We were not disappointed. Service was great. Food was great. We are an older couple so we're happy to see that they had seniors menu with some smaller size burgers. Amazing flavor on the burgers and the best french fries that we have eaten in a long, long long time. I've heard soooo many good things about this place and the online reviews are very good so I was really looking forward to trying it. I have to believe that the 5-star reviews are for the huge portions because my meal wasn't that good. I had biscuits with country gravy with eggs and hashbrowns. Sadly it had very little flavor. The country gravy was pretty much unseasoned and had no sausage in it (which is normally the best part of the dish). The hashbrowns were cooked ok but also had no flavor. Usually when you have hashbrowns you'd expect a nice buttery flavor and/or salt/seasoning but there was none so they just tasted like shredded potatoes. The service was great. But there is a stale smell to the place and a sticky floor as you walk through the restaurant. I was also surprised at how expensive it was (after hearing for so long how reasonable the prices were especially relative to the portion size). However, it was $25 for the dish, a soda, and tip. This was my last stop on my Duluth trip. I heard about the burger and fry challenge so I had to try it! The place is near lookout drive so it was easy to find. The divey place is located in a strip mall. Service was great with counter service for those like me that are flying solo. I love to sit at the counter and watch the cooks. I learn many new cooking techniques at the counter! I had prepared all day for this challenge. Very light breakfast, spent the better part of the day walking at Gooseberry Falls and Two Harbors accumulating about 12000 steps. I thought I was ready so I ordered the famous Belly Buster, not to be confused with The Challenge (4 more lbs. of beef and .5 lb. more fries) I sat and watched as they served up the many other patrons in the café with tons of fries. If you want GREAT homemade fries this is the place to come. You will NOT go away hungry and they are seasoned well. As I watched the cook prepare my burger beast I couldn't help but ask about the Challenge burger. The cook said he has had many try but few have made the Wall of Fame. The chef said that when that order comes in, it takes the whole 4 ft. grill to prepare the monstrosity burger. Well my time had come. The BIG burger starring me in the face and the pile of fries. I watched Man vs Food, I got this...I thought? I had ordered a glass of water but sparingly drank it as I knew that would fill my gut. I started on the fries and had a good pace. I wanted to see if I could do it in under an hour, even though there is no time limit on this challenge. I was well into it with 10 minutes time gone. Then I tried the burger. I could barely take a bite it was so HUGE. I mowed through half the burger in about 5-minutes. It tasted great. I figured I would still enjoy the meal not like those "hotdog" eating machines that liquefy the dog! The burger was gone at the 25 minute mark. The remaining pile of fries slowly dwindled as I reluctantly shoved them into my mouth. In just under 40 minutes I completed the Belly Buster challenge. I had a nearly 4-hour drive home so I decided to visit the Enger Tower and walk off some of the meal. It helped but I still rank this in my top 10 stupidest things I have done. No regrets but I think I will leave the challenges to the big boys on TV. I would certainly visit this place again. The menu is extensive and you will NOT go away hungry. Absolutely unassuming place located outside of Duluth in a strip mall, Big Daddy's promised a damn good burger and that is what I was looking for. Walking in, there wasn't a table open so I sat at the bar that overlooks the kitchen. I got to watch all the one and out of the kitchen (for better or worse). Yes, the fries are freshly cut and fried, I watched it happen. The building itself is nothing fancy. Tired,worn out furniture and building but once again, if the food is good can be forgiven. I ordered the Breakfast Burger - a burger topped with bacon, egg, and peanut butter sandwiched between french toast and served with a side of maple syrup...ah, yes please. Verdict - was it worth going off the beaten path? ABSOLUTELY. The burger was piping hot and absolutely delicious. Probably the most unhealthy thing I have eaten all year and I did not care. The side of fries could have served three people, let alone just me. I loved the unpretentious small town feel, fast and friendly service, large portions, and reasonable prices. Listening to 80's on the radio made it feel like I walked back in time. If you want a damn good burger, come here. It is worth the detour out of town. Hmmm I saw the 4.5 star average and strolled right in there for lunch. The burgers are all over cooked. They actually don't even ask about temperature preference at all. This is a burger joint worth taking a detour for. I've always felt welcome walking in here. The crew is very friendly. We grabbed the big table in the back. The decorations used to be very sparse, now they have a wall of... interesting art. We made our orders and the server was great in helping us get exactly what we all wanted. Super helpful, thank you! The food came out fast. The onion rings are the bomb! The sweet onions have the most amazing batter and are cooked to a golden happiness. Today the wife and I dined in to have an amazing meal from Big Daddy's Burgers. It's definitely noticeable how popular this little establishment is when you first arrive. The hustle and bustle of patrons going in and out of this area is truly amazing. It is unfortunately how small this place is. It's apparent that it is time to grow and have a bigger place. As you walk by you can see the many people who have attempted the burger challenge and succeeded, myself included haha. I was very excited about dinner tonight because I am a huge burger fan, as many of you may know, and we were eating at Big Daddy's Burgers. My excitement rose even more when I saw it was located in a semi-rundown strip mall. This place is gaining Dive points by the minute. After walking in I realized all of my wildest dreams have come true as the place looks like a total Dive. Everything was very clean and neat but the atmosphere was all Dive meets diner. After looking over the surprisingly solid menu I decided on the house burger which is called a Big Daddy Burger. This burger consisted of 1/2 lb. patty, sauteed mushrooms and onions, bacon, pepperjack and guacamole on a large English muffin. I have never had a burger on an English muffin before and I had to try it. I mean seriously, how could you go wrong? After getting back to the hotel room I tore right into my burger. OH.MY.FREAKING.LORD!!! This burger was fantastic. Still not the best burger I ever had but it definitely falls into my top 5. The English muffin definitely set this burger apart from others while the guacamole added a creaminess and flavor to the burger which I had not had before. I give Big Daddy's Burgers 4 Doubledays.
