Coney is a an all time "go to" when in town. However the Millerhill Mall location missed its mark on this trip. The buns were not steamed and the hotdog was cold. Still nice to visit and I would recommend a stop at the down town location, it never disappoints! read more

I don't know what happened but the pictures offered on yelp are not the dogs we were served. The pictures listed here on yelp show an all beef frank. I got a skinny pale pork/chicken dog that you give the kiddos at the bbq. My dog was skinny, pale, and tasteless. The first thing to a good red hot is to use an all beef dog. You know, like a nathans or Hebrew or the premium ball parks. Now the sauce was burnt... I had no idea if it was supposed to be chili or not. It was awful. Been eating good, quality dogs for 65 years. I was very disappointed because the locals really seem to think this was a good place. My wild rice soup was pretty good. I could not tell if it was made on premises or from a can. My suggestion if you find yourself here, is to order the soup. I've been coming here for more than 30 years, starting when I lived in Duluth and continuing now that i am a frequently traveler up the north shore. Coney's are decent (although the dogs themselves seem smaller than years ago) and the gyros are generally a notch above anywhere else in the state simply because they griddle the pita bread first which makes a huge difference. 30 or 20 years ago this restaurant would have gotten 4 or 5 starts from me. As of 2023 unfortunately only 3. Service is still good, prices are reasonable but the the neighborhood has deteriorated greatly. Closed and empty storefronts and offices now outnumber those that are occupied and the majority of the people milling about appear to be homeless and there for the nearby shelter. Less customers working and shopping in the area has resulted in lower volume of business which equals greater inconsistency, especially with the gyros. Gyro meat is traditionally cooked upright, piled high onto a rotating rotisserie spit. As the vertical skewer rotates, the "meat cone" is seared to a crisp on the outside, then thinly-sliced for each sandwich. Here in the US, the meat is generally factory made from a mix of meat trimmings -- sometimes beef and lamb, occasionally pork. The meats are ground together, seasoned with breadcrumbs and spices, then compacted under intense hydraulic pressure. Doesn't sound yummy, but it works. So if nearly everyone is selling the same meat, what makes one place better than another. The griddled pita's help, homemade tzatziki helps as does nicely ripened tomatoes and sweet shaved onions. Even the method of assembly makes a difference (folded vs cut open and stuffed - I prefer folded). Here Coney Island Deluxe scores high. But because their volume is now so much lower, it's hard to get freshly crisped and shaved meat off the rotisserie. To me, shaved fresh vs pulled from a warming bin makes a huge difference. Also, during slow times the meat cone's are in use and rotating longer than desired risking spoilage and unsafe temperatures. On May 19, 2023 my son and I stopped in and the gyro meat was rancid and inedible. When I looked at the meat cone, there was little left on it telling me that it had been spinning a while. I would have normally said something but the clerk was helping another customer and we needed to get on the road. I love spending my dollars at locally owned joints and will likely still go to Coney Island Deluxe in the future. But what was once a must stop is now a maybe stop. read more

This place has had the same great food for over 30 years now. They are friendly, quick, reasonably priced, hidden gem in my opinion. When I worked downtown in Duluth decades ago this place was a regular lunch spot at least once a week. In my opinion they make the best hot dog chili I've ever had anywhere. Dogs have a distinctive snap to the skins that is sooo good. They still have the same pictures of the laker taconite ships that were there in the 80's, including one big one of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The area of downtown where they are located is not as active and thriving as it used to be since so much business has moved to Canal Park. Don't let the surroundings fool you. If you want a true taste of Duluth this is a place you need to visit at least once. read more

Old-school diner food right here. For some reason, a good hot dog is just as appealing to me as a nice steak. Call me a savage, but the dogs here I could eat all day long. You'll be taking a step back through time when you come in, getting excellent, homemade recipes for a very decent price. Dogs not your thing, maybe a chili burger/fries are up your alley. Either way, it would be near blasphemy not to try their coney sauce on something you won't want to stop inhaling long after your belt is ready to burst. This is my favorite place to go for GYROS in the twin ports (I also like Kosta's, if I'm in Superior). I've eaten gyros across the country, and this place is just as good as anywhere else. Their gyro meat is tasty, the sauce is tangy and creamy, the tomato and onion is always fresh and the pita is the right texture, taste and chewiness. There are two locations -- Superior St and 1st Street, but they are different owners, and different quality of gyros. 1st Street location is the only one to go to for gyros. I almost found out the hard way that the Superior St location uses that pressed meat like you get in the grocery store, for their gyro meat. Disgusting! Luckily, I saw them grilling it for another customer, before we ordered. We left immediately and went up one block to 1st St. My boyfriend loves the Coney dogs. He grew up on them and said they were "traditional." As he explained it, NO BEANS in my sauce! And the buns are the right amount of fluffy white softness. I also like their fries. Always fried fresh for each order, the good ol' fashioned diner fries that are crunchy on the outside and soft and hot on the inside. Don't go here because you want "ambiance." I took one star off for the decor. This place needs to be remodeled. It looks like an old time deli / diner and has the same furniture it had in the 70's. Years of watching the Simpsons has taught me that whenever there are twins, one is good and one is inevitably evil. Of the two Coney Island establishments in downtown Duluth, this is definitely the good one. There's something a little off about the chili they top their Coney dogs with, but it's still the best chili dog in Duluth. The gyro is a little on the small side, but it's topped with one of the better tzatziki sauces I've ever had. It's definitely worth a hike up one street of the hill for a better quality cheap lunch. read more

If I could give a 2 and a half rating, I would! After my husband ran the Grandma's marathon, he was craving a Coney! At the time, I had never eaten a Coney dog in my life, so I was super psyched to try one out. This place was packed, so we assumed that the dogs were decent. We ordered three Coney dogs with everything, my husband requested some fries as well. He says the fries were a bit soggy, not the usual crispy texture he was expecting. Friends took me here on my first trip to Duluth. They are natives and grew up on this place and love it so I went with it. Personally, I found the entire experience disgusting. Cheap, skinny dogs on Wonder Bread buns and some dark 'sauce' that was bitter and greasy. I ordered two dogs with fries and focused on the fries while leaving most of the dogs to be tossed in the garbage. Much like some places in my hometown which I absolutely love, this place isn't going to do anything for anyone who hasn't acquired a taste for this slop unless they're dying of starvation (literally). I can appreciate the sentimental value to those that grew up here and knew nothing better but unless that's you, you don't need to bother with this place at all. read more

I was in Duluth for the afternoon.. I decided to try this place for a Coney Cheese. After having a difficult time at the pay lot, because the damn box would not accept quarters, I decided to see if there was street parking available. I got lucky and found a meter about 4 doors away. And they took my quarter... I am done with these unmanned pay lots.. I got in and was quickly greeted by a friendly woman asking what I wanted. Well, let me look over the menu, never been here before. Do you have Coney's, I asked? Ah, yea, I am pretty sure we can satisfy that request. I ordered 1 Cheese Coney, fries and beverage. The Coney was quickly prepared and beverage put on my tray. I was told the fries will be brought out to me. OK, I understand the fries might take longer to prepare, but prepare the Coney, keep it warm and wait for the fries to be done. As it was, I sat down, ate my Coney, then the fries came. They gave me 3 packets of ketchup for these fries. Sometimes I like/need ketchup for my fries and sometimes, it doesn't matter. This was one of them times, I needed ketchup and I did not have enough. I ate about half of the fries, finished my beverage and left.... The Coney Sauce was Ok. It was covered in onions and cheese, so I didn't get a good look at it. But it was flavorful. But isn't anything, when you add cheese and onions !!!!!! I am not sure, but I do not think it was an all beef dog. And it was not natural casing either, but it was not a terrible dog. Eight hours later, I have not gotten sick. It was much larger place than I was expecting. I can't imagine what kind of a zoo it would be on a busy night. They had a counter with about a dozen stools that seemed to be far enough apart to enjoy a couple of coneys and maybe shoot the bull with someone. They had several booths (15-20) and some small tables in the center. Probably seats about 90. The place is definitely old, but that adds to the experience. It was clean and the staff was friendly. I am glad I went, but not gonna travel from the cities to Duluth for this coney. I'll simply walk to my kitchen, brown some beef, add seasonings, sauce and fry up some dogs. I'll have better Coney's for a lessor price. read more

Absolutely the BEST coneys and burgers. The fries - always burn your mouth hot out of the fryer - are the perfect crunch outside with a consistently well done inside. The coneys ("without", i.e. No onions) for me, are a wonderful guilty pleasure. The coney sauce and good quality dogs and buns make it. The coney sauce I could eat by the pint (do they sell that separately???) and covers the dog perfectly end to end. In all the years I've been going there, I've never seen one bit drip off - so you never lose even one delicious bite. This makes for a very inexpensive lunch ($22-25 for 4), and you feel great about supporting a family-run Duluth institution. The owners and staff are super-friendly and really appreciate your business. Yes, the decor hasn't been updated since who knows when but that only makes the place charming. I was so excited to come and have a Coney. I crave them sometimes and have been coming here since the early 70's. What a disappointment. Believe me, I have always been their biggest fan. They do not finely chop their onions any more, they come from a supplier. And, they changed their buns. Little changes make a huge difference. IT DOESN'T TASTE THE SAME!
