Duffin's freakin' Donuts, oh baby! In the last month I have gone out of my way to get Duffin's more times than I am proud to admit. This family owned establishment is unassuming and seldom publicized, giving it a ton of charm. From the awful font that is obviously a product of the 80's to the seemingly sketchy neighbourhood everything about DD is welcoming and comforting; a rare find in Vancouver. You might think, with a menu the length of The Glass Menagerie, that there might not be one shinning star - you would think wrong, my friend! Duffin's fried chicken is easily the best fried chicken I have had not only in Vancouver, but in all of Canada. Yeah, I said it. DD, of course, offers spicy and regular which are available 24/7 (#winning). The chicken is made with the perfect level of moisture on the inside without being too juicy in addition to a crispy coating that doesn't just turn to ash when you bite it. Both the regular and spicy chicken are worth writing home about, but my favourite is the spicy. I'm not sure what they use to flavour the coating (all spice? seasoned salt?) but whatever it is, they should keep that recipe under lock and key because it is redonqulous! Here I was walking around thinking I'm an Atheist but one bite into Duffin's fried chicken and I think I saw God. There is one very small caveat, Duffin's isn't the most pristine spot. Which is only glaring because it is in Vancouver. Avoid using the washroom because, yeah, it's cringy af. Chances are, if you're knee deep into your 3rd piece of fried chicken your eyes have already glazed over and you've lost all cares in the world. I went to this location Knight and 41th, and ordered a dozen of donuts, and an avocado smoothie...So, while waiting for 15 minutes, I saw several of the employees touching their nose and hair, then serving their customers and touching their FOOD without washing their hands or putting on gloves...And the person who made my smoothie, was wearing FAKE NAILS and I noticed several times she touched her hair and ears without gloves, and would carry on... I am disappointed to learn that they do not start making the donuts until Noon everyday. The lady told me the best time to get fresh donuts was at 7 at night. Like what? So when I go first thing in the morning; they are actually day old. My grandkids are getting ready for bed at that time, so no fresh deliciousness for them. Don't expect to be respected as a valuable customer here. After I had purchased dinner and discovered to my own embarrassment that I had locked my keys and phone in the car, they would not allow me to place a call for assistance. I honestly think this place is the most cursed eatery I know of in the lower mainland. It's open 24/7, but between the hours of 2-6am I feel like it exists on another plane of existence. Super busy on Friday/Saturday nights when everything else is closing but people are still drunk. OMG! I totally die and gone to heaven when my boyfriend and I stumbled upon a late night craving.... with a single swipe of the pictures, I knew we had to make that trip. We stayed at the Four Seasons and taxi'd to this joint. The moment we arrived, wow! The smell of greasy goodness. Yes, we immediately picked fried chicken and donuts. Ummm.... yeah, we ordered 6 piece mix and a dozen of donuts. We sat down and I grabbed the spicy drumstick. Oh my FRIED GOODNESS! I have not tried the donuts or the other food and can only comment on the fried chicken and potato fries. Basically, if you like your chicken to be super salty and your fries to be greasy and extra salty, this is the place to be. You can go here anytime, and I mean ANY TIME of the day (24 hour restaurant) and if you crave chicken that is juicy, tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside at 3am I suggest going to this restaurant. It's a bit of a stoners dive but it's also an incredibly eclectic menu at a value price - not to mention a classic institution that's older than most millennials in Vancouver. Got half a dozen donuts to go. The interior of the restaurant is not the best, but they have some of the best donuts in Vancouver. My favourite is the buttermilk, which is just sinfully delightful. The runner up would be the chocolate old fashioned, which was crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The chocolate crueller was pretty good as well, and was light an airy. First time costumer! I came here with two of my good friends in search of some yummy doughnuts and ended up with more! This place pretty much has everything for everyones swewt tooth or belly hunger. s/o to duffin's lol i been eating here since my pops would take me out for some cheap and fire eats as a kid. i'm now 19 with a driver's license so driving out to vancouver from surrey just for duffin's is worth it haha. one minor gripe about this place is the occasional wasted customer that adds to the already pretty ghetto atmosphere... but honestly if you're from around here, it's kind of part of the charm haha. another one is parking pretty limited which i can't really blame them for since it's a pretty small spot, but pulling up with a squad in multilple cars might not always be the best idea looool the food's great for the price point it's at, you could have a complete meal for less than $15 and sometimes not even be able to finish it. my personal fave order is any viet sub with a large fries and a sugar raised donut. fried chicken's great too, probably my fave in the city tbh. my favourite 24/7 spot in the lower mainland, always cool to adventure out here in the late nights/early mornings with the squad. especially during the summertime. those iced coffees hit different during the summer lol. read more

* Yet another offering on an already complex menu! * Duffins continues to expand the randomness of their menu which includes donuts, tortas, Cambodian noodle soups, bubble tea, fried chicken, steam table Chinese fast food, etc. They definitely win the prize for the most diverse menu in Vancouver in my book! Normally a diverse menu is a dangerous thing with nothing being good. But Duffins does have some winners. In addition to my favourite machaca torta (superb), and their spicy fried chicken (very good for a fast food version), they have now added pupusas! The pupusas come in 4 varieties. I tried two classics, the de cerdo (pork), and the queso (cheese). They were served in the traditional Salvadorean style being accompanied by a side of curtido (a pickeld slaw), and a very liquidy tomato salsa. They take a while as they make them fresh when you order. The flavours were surprisingly good. The dough had a nice strong corn flavour, and the fillings complemented things nicely. The cheese version had little chili dices inside to balance the flavour. The pork version had been nicely seasoned. The tomato sauce adds a nice complexity. The curtido was a bit closer to a vinegared cole slaw than a traditional curtido, but I'm splitting hairs. The pupusas range from $2 to $2.85 depending on the fillings. These make a really nice addition to the already extremely complex menu! read more

I first discovered this place because I was so intrigued, I had to know what a "hot torta sub" was. Turns out its one of my favourite things on the planet. Like that episode of Seinfeld with Papi, this place has everything! Vietnamese food, donuts, Chinese, sandwiches, bubble tea, breakfast stuff, fried chicken. And I'm glad they do because considering how good the food is, who cares! The cleanliness of this place leaves something to be desired, but once again, I so don't care. Something that never, never, never, disappoints here is the Beef Steak Hot Torta Sub. Even if I'm not hungry, I can eat this because it is that good. Hmmm, I feel like words aren't getting this one across... Let me start over. Let's try this SAT styles. A beef steak torta sub is to food as cookies are to cookie monster, as green is to St. Paddy's Day, as eating disorders are to Lindsay Lohan. It contains delicious marinated beef, avocado, tomatoes, lettuce, onion, banana peppers and other things together that just make it amazing, the bread is warm and so tempting as well. So if you have a car or a bus pass. GO! GO! GO! It's so worth it. Ignore the fact that the booths are never clean and many old men camp out there to watch the small TVs when hockey is on. I have worked at many donut shops in Ontario all through high school but I ain't never worked in a shop like this. The place is a combination of Chinese food, Vietnamese food, fried chicken outlet, Mexican food, donut shop and convenience mart. Unfreaken believable. From the outside it doesn't look like much and location is not in the greatest of areas 41/Knight but what awaits inside is a whole different ball game. I knew that they were previously located on Main street and after reading the favorable reviews made it a point to check it out on the weekend. I am glad I did. If you go for 1 reason only you have to check out the Buttermilk filled gems, you won't be sorry. I haven't found anything to beat Krispy Kreme's originals but these are definitely knocking down the door. They are filled with bavarian cream, blueberry or lemon curd and I recommend the lemon. They are the #1 sellers in the place. Tried the tortas, chicken being the most popular and it was very fresh, came with avocado and the buns are better than Kaisers or Portugese. Service was quick, less than 5 minute wait and the staff were friendly and willing to please. The vietnamese subs came with the 2 main staples that make them, cilantro and jalapeno's. It is surprising how many Vietnamese restaurants don't include either. Overall, no faults whatsoever with Duffins, in fact it was more than I expected and I can see why it gets such glowing recommendations. What funny signage. the front canopy is bright and new. The menu board behind the counter is old. Wait, there is another backlit menu board on the side above the coolers. Wait, there are hand written signs all over the glass. Big ice cream menu hanging in the corner but, no ice cream in sight. Everywhere you look, another menu is staring back. What a funny selection of food. Torta subs with latin american fillings, machaca, jamon y queso, chicken avocado but, wait viet bahn with mixed viet hams, other viet selections with various meats. A meatball torta, a tuna salad torta, teriyaki beef? teriyaki chicken torta? A chinese fast food take out. 30 varieties of fresh donuts. Bubble tea? Fried chicken? Fried bananas on a stick beside fried yams on a stick? A good looking pile of papusas. I bet they don't have taro pudding, hold on its in another cooler I didn't spot before. What a funny looking crowd of old, young, poor, Mercedes, every ethnicity, age and income. Why are all the tables dirty? Everything we tried was excellent. Tasty, well cooked, cheap, plentiful, fresh. Well maybe not the sushi trays in the cooler, I forgot to mention those. I don't have a clue how this place works. Chili dogs and fries, I missed that on one of the wall menus. With 200+ menu items, something is bound to be hit or miss. Confession, I have a slight love and hate relationship with Duffin's Donuts. On one hand, it's so close to where I live, and if you're craving food to go, it's quick and easy. There are so many menu items that if this place was featured on Restaurant Makeover on the Food Network, the host would go nuts. On the other hand, the interior needs a massive cleanup job and anytime you go late at night (it's open 24/7), you're bound to run into some very interesting characters. I only come here for the donuts. Gotta admit, I'm a skeptic when it comes to a donut-chinese-fast food-deep fried-american food restaurant. I don't even eat at Chinese-(fill in cuisine type here) fusion foods. Tried their original glazed and boston cream... gotta keep it super simple. It was hard to choose... they had so many donuts (and other things) to pick from. My head was spinning in donuts. Loved the donuts, the dough was airy and really fresh, the icing and everything was perfecto! Service is friendly and place was pretty packed for the lunch rush. I've heard great things about their food too but haven't had the stomach to try. It is a bit messy and dirty though but it's super busy so I won't make a big deal of it. By the middle covered in plexiglass they serve two kinds of fried chicken. That's KFC to you, but in a home-made bread crumb coating kind of way. Now scoot over to the right and you're transported to a pseudo-Panda Express counter of Chinese fastfood treats. Still not satisfied? Did I happen to mention they also have Chinese and Vietnamese noodle soup? It's a riot. I tell 'ya. But let us focus and skip all the eye candy, shall we. For as Marc stated in his review, we're here for the torta subs. Meat lover? Head straight for the Machaca - spicy shredded beef. Me? I'm a chorizo and egg person. And if you feel tempted to grab those donuts and Chinese food as well. I fell for those, too, and I can tell you to...STAY AWAY. Re-focus. Duffin's, you sneaky temptress, you! I'm both sad and glad I didn't try this place earlier. Sad because that's years of sub-par sandwiches I have been eating instead of Duffin's delights. Glad because Duffin's is not in a convenient location, so driving all over the city to get tasty sandwiches because others just don't compare is not practical. Currently, Duffin's is close to where I play floor hockey. So in the last 3 weeks I have eaten from Duffin's a good 5 times or so, with some non-floor hockey stops thrown in. The food selection is nonsensical. There's Latin food, there's Vietnamese, Chinese, and good old American. And it's open 24 hours. It's just insane! I've only been here during late night hours (though not in the wee hours, yet), but it has been consistently busy. You order your food, get your number and go sit down. The pupusas take a little while, and sandwiches are made fresh, therefore the wait can be up to 15 minutes, so grab a piece of fried chicken to eat while you wait. You can't go wrong. That chicken is good! I have had one of the torta subs (chicken and avocado!), the Vietnamese sub with chicken a few times (magical), a pupusa with cheese and beans (with salsa and coleslaw, hello!), spicy fried chicken (so tender), and buttermilk donuts (heaven). It's all great, and the prices are so affordable. The bathrooms, however, kinda gross. I recommend holding it until you get home. read more

This is one of my favorite donut and burger shops open 24 hours in south van. If I was in the neighborhood more often I;'d likely be eating here 3 or 4 nights a week! Which would be a horrible thing for my gut and my wallet (they are really pricey on certain items!) but righteous on my taste buds... Walk in, place an order, take a number. The food usually only takes about 15 minutes but can be a bit of a wait , depending on the time of night, not to mention which night it is. Don't fret about a long wait! All good things take time! There's a booth or table available, soft drinks are a buck, and the bus runs by here all night. Try the cheeseburger combo, the fries are incredible! Try the teryaki sub! Its a taste experience. And if youre coming from a party, and going back, remember to pick up a 12 pack of day-old donuts. Being a fried chicken fan and having my chubby friend rave about the chicken here, I dropped by on a lazy Sunday to give their chicken a try. Ordered the 4 pieces for $7 with both original and spicy. The taste was good, the chicken was gigantic, but just lacked the juiciness of Churches and unique flavour of KFC and it didn't help to have the chicken sitting under a heat lamp. This place also has an identity crisis: subs, donuts, asian food, yet somehow manages to please people for most things. I'd come back here again for another try, but the nod goes to HIfive Chicken for an alternative to the regular fried chicken joints. After our dodgeball team got 8th place in the playoffs (victory!) we decided to go to Duffin's and celebrate. I had never heard of this place before, but I definitely had to check it out. Duffin's looks like one of those greasy spoon diners you see in movies, with old worn out booths, old school signs, and an overall dingy feeling. It's a great example of a place that doesn't have to be fancy to be fantastic. I recommended you pay cash here, because Duffin's doesn't take visa or mastercard, and there's a 25 cent fee if you use debit on a purchase less than $5. Duffin's has a huge variety of food on their menu, ranging from donuts to sandwiches to chinese. Even the pickiest people can find something on the menu. The chinese food selection is massive and rivals many take-away chinese restaurants I've been too. The donut selection is large, and even though we went at 8 PM the donuts were fresh and delicious. I bought a rainbow cake donut with green icing and sprinkles, and it was fantastic (and only 90 cents!). The sandwich and burger selection is large as well. The pictures of the food on the wall aren't very appealing, but the food itself is fantastic! I ordered a turkey sandwich and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. My teammates also ordered sandwiches and burritos, and they all looked way better than the pictures. I was really excited to find out that you can also get bubble tea here. For $3.50 you can get 16 different flavors of bubble tea from a powder, or a fresh fruit based bubble tea for an extra $1. I decided to splurge and order a "fresh fruit" strawberry bubble tea, and even though the strawberries came out of the freezer, the tea was alright. If you're in the area (and even if you're not), I highly recommend you check out Duffin's, even if only to enjoy chinese food and a donut in the same convenient location. I'll definitely find my way back here again, if only for more donuts. Note: I'm not sure how I feel about the $1.75 Jello Surprise I saw in the fridge area. Duffin's is a throwback to what a 24 hour diner/coffee house should be. Duffin's Donuts looks like it has been transplanted from the side of a US freeway that was transported from the 1980's. Rest assured, though, with one taste of their donuts, you'll be glad you came in. On the corner of Knight and 41st Ave, Duffin's Donuts is a gem of a find. As the name suggests, the staple of Duffin's is the donuts which they make in house 2 to 3 times during the day, mainly due to simply having to re-stock the casew due to people buying so many. With your first bite of the donuts, you can tell they aren't semi-baked or made with a pre-made base. In my mind this makes them vastly superior to a unnamed popular chain dounut chain that can be found every few blocks in a Canadian city. There are always lots of donut choices, with more than 20 donuts types available at any one time. My personal favourite is the bear claw which is an apple fritter type donut with apple pie filling in half of it. Delicious! However, many of the jelly and flavoured creams donuts (such as banana or strawberry) are great. All donuts are less than a dollar, which also includes fritters. When you buy 6 or more, you get a pretty hefty discount. This reduced price makes it almost seem that you're throwing away money if you just buy 1, so why not just get a dozen for ~$8. That's right, 12 in house made donuts for ~$8. To me, this makes Duffin's Donuts worlds better than Lucky's Donuts on Main (which can charge up to $5 for one specialty donut). Despite the name, Duffin's donuts also provides a plethora of different food options to try. There are so many options, it can seem like Duffin's is experiencing an identity crisis to a person going for their first time. At Duffin's you can get Vietnamese subs, bubble tea, chinese food, and fried chicken to name a few items. Duffin's makes no apologies for the amount of different items you can get, but that's also because the execution of the food is good, not great, but but good. All meal type items they provide are on a scale of ok to pretty good, with none being terrible. However, on that note, the Chinese food is on the side of the greasy take-out variety, but oh so good if that's what you're looking for. This is great information to know if you get a late night craving, since, as mentioned previously, Duffin's is open 24 hours. Duffin's Donuts is a place that may not be for everyone on first glance, but looking past the physical exterior, it's a great find in a city which can seem to have an over abundance of boutique diners or 24-hour chain restaurants. read more
