Yelp does it again. I had purchased a 'salvaged' luxury vehicle and unfortunately that's why it's called 'salvaged'. Found Funk's on Yelp and brought it in and met Art and Ken who are both great. Art kept constant communication with me throughout the TWO weeks that this 'costly mistake' was kept in the shop and finally after hours of time and effort my car emerged from the serious 'operation' after it was practically dissected and sewn back together. Art was honest and upfront and worked with me re: this time consuming and costly repair but it was well worth it because the car really is a beautiful car and it rides smoothly and safely and that's the most important. Thank you Art and team and you now have a lifetime customer because I won't bring my car anywhere else but Funk's!! So if anyone is looking for trustworthy and excellent mechanics, Funk's is where you need to go! read more

My brother is good in judging a person's character. He found Art of Funk's Auto works on the Internet after I asked him to help me find a reliable and trustworthy auto mechanic. Upon meeting and doing business with Art on several of our cars now, my brother is absolutely right! Art is someone that can be trusted. He will recommend repairs that is needed immediately and things that can wait. Furthermore, him and his staff are very knowledgeable with foreign cars especially! I highly recommend Funk's Auto Works...Nice man! read more

Well... Another car nightmare and another fix from the man himself.. It never ceases to amaze me how dependable Art and the rest of his crew is at the shop. I live in Modesto these days and having Art as a mechanic and friend has been a blessing. Thank you for your service sir! read more

Art Funk has taken care of all our family and business vehicles for the past 20 years...They are always fair.... perfect...no!..... but always fair! Car's are complicated and the ones I see here are all full of used parts until Art and Luis work on them...then they get some new parts and last a few more miles....I'd like to get a newer car, but it's cheaper to let Art fix the ones I got. God Bless you Art.... read more

I've been taking my cars to Funks for over 20 years. And I don't write reviews often. You can see I recently reviewed Honda of Oakland as it was time for a new car. In spite of valiant efforts for 150,000 miles on a very sketchy '01 Sebring, (we bought it new to be patriotic after 9/11) it finally seized. Art has had the not-so-enviable of tasks in keeping my three kids' used (I refuse to buy a new Beamer for a high schooler!) cars running. I know he and his master mechanic Louis would rather work on MBZs, Porsches and nice Volvos, which according to yelp he does quite well at, but our 96 Volvo 850, 96 Sebring and 95 300 CE have served us well. The 850 recently hit 200,000! He even gets firm with us when the tires are almost out of life....Thank you Funk's European for keeping our jalopies running and safe. read more

Reliable, trustworthy, knowledgeable and great service. They immediately diagnosed the problem, and searched out the parts and in a day repaired our 2002 Saab 9-3. The car runs great and we haven't any problems since. I strongly recommend Funks Auto Works. read more

I've trusted Art with both cars for over 10 years! Art is not only knowledgable but kind. He goes above and beyond with sound advice. His mechanics are great and always feel comfortable leaving my car with Art and his crew! read more

Art is awesome!! He is extremely knowledgeable on every car I have brought in. The work gets done right and the price is reasonable. Not the cheapest price in the world but fair and I know he is only going to recommend repairing what needs or should get done. I trust that when he tells me the brakes need replaced they really do indeed need replaced. read more

After having bad experiences with other mechanics in the area Art is a pleasant surprise. Friendly service and trustworthy mechanics.

Love this place. Honest people and I received a thank you card afterwards. Definitely coming back any time I need something !

We've used Funk's for years now for our '99 Saab 9-5. Art is great and his prices are reasonable. We had a situation where the car periodically would stall. Art's team practically took the car apart until the discovered the issue. I always feel we get great service and with Art, I'll easily get my car, with 152,000 miles on it, up over 200,000. read more

I've been bringing our cars to Art for many years. Always great service. Very honest - even to the point of not charging if he determines no work is necessary. Amazing! I always find I'm getting the right work done even though I know nothing about cars. read more

Art is a wonderful mechanic and has taken care of our Volvo and BMW for years now. I recently needed a headlight changed and he did it while I waited, even though I had no appointment. It was evening and I had to drive my two kids home so I really appreciated this extra attention. We have been super happy with all the work Art has done on our cars and the personalized service that you get because he knows you and knows your car. He is always honest and straightforward about what your car needs and how much it will be. read more

I own an Audi A8L and only let Art and his crew work on my car. I do not even take it to the dealer as I absolutely trust Art will never cheat me or do anything that will compromise the integrity of my car. Both the prices and the service at Funks is top notch. I have never felt taken advantage of; and many times I have walked away thinking I got a great deal on top of great service. If Art does not know something or believes there is a better mechanic for the car you have (my girlfriends highly modified Miata), he will recommend you to the correct person instead of pretending to know it all. I honestly cannot say enough about the service and quality of Funks Auto Works. If you are in the East Bay, try them out, you won't be disappointed. read more

I spoke with the owner, who said he is working with his staff on ensure the estimate is provided ahead of time. When we took the car to McKevitt Volvo, they had increased the amount ot time to replace the cup holder lid, more than an hour over what was orignally estimated. For that reason I cannot blame Funk for their original estimate. We had the cupholder lid installed at Max Auto Repair in Berkeley for $50, it took them less than an hour. ============================================================== On a previous time (over a year ago) I took our Volvo in; they did a repair that surpassed 2000 without checking with us. This past week, Funk gave me a phone estimate for $570, when I came to pick up the car I was told the total was $630 because of taxes. However on the hardcopy estimate they had put $730, that amount was never communicated!! 2 weeks ago, I asked the dealer in San Leandro for a cup holder lid installation, they told me it would take 15 minutes (about $75); at Funks they were already installing the lid when I called even without an estimate, when I inquired for an estimate I was told it would take 1 hour and obviously at a much higher cost than the dealer's estimate. Why would I pay for the additional time due to their inexperience! When we got the car, it was dirty from being left outside, the paper mat was greasy but was left there for me to throw it away. We have decided not to bring our cars there ever again...... read more

It has been a pleasure doing business with Art. He has excellent customer service skills and has a great reliable and knowledgeable team working with him. I am very pleased with the services I have been getting from his team during the last few months. Thank you for your help in maintaining my 2 cars I plan to keep for a very long time. read more

Art is the best there is. He has worked on all of my cars, my cousins cars, my clients cars, and several of my friends cars as well as my mother and sisters cars. Everyone has had nothing but great things to say about Art and his fabulous service. Always honest, always on time and always right the first time with a very reasonable price. I recommend him to everyone I know. You will not regret this! read more

As Art says, you don't need to pay for marble floors and nice music to get your premium vehicle serviced. I love this place.

When the radiator went on our '01 Lexus LS430 we had heard that Funk's was a good reliable place to get it fixed, thinking it would be considerably cheaper than going to a Lexus or Toyota dealer. It was very convenient to where my wife worked and a customer of her's had said she'd always had great service from them on her Lexus. After getting the radiator fixed for $1300, the engine light came on again so we took it back and they said the head gasket was blown and would need to be replaced. Seeing no other option and again thinking they'd be cheaper than a dealer, we gave them the go ahead at an estimated cost of $5000. After a week at their shop (and they don't have loaner vehicles), we ended up with a bill for $5400, higher than original estimate by almost 10%. This included paying for the replacement of the thermostat, gasket & coolant for the 2nd time. So we had now paid them $6700 in repairs. When we got it back, it just didn't sound right, so we took it back a couple more times before they had it adjusted to where it should be - and all seemed OK. A week later the check engine light came on again, but since we needed a shuttle (which Funk's doesn't provide) we took it to the Toyota dealer. Paying them a $150 diagnostic fee, they said the thermostat was faulty and needed replacing! They said to take it back to Funk's and have them replace the thermostat and refund the diagnostic fee. Funk's said they'd replace it for free (don't forget, we had already paid 2 times for a new thermostat), but wouldn't cover what we had paid Toyota. Our bill for repairs was now up to $6850. However, when we got it home after this 3rd repair the VSC light was on. A number of visits back to Funk's later (they were quite nice and their explanations of their issues determining the cause seemed reasonable) they said they were sure they had found the problem, a faulty diagnostic device which cost $800 to replace! And they weren't even 100% sure this was the cause. OK, because it was rare for this device to be an issue - it isn't even stocked by Lexus - I wanted to verify this so took it to the Toyota dealer. They fixed it for free by performing a simple reset. It didn't need a new part after all, saving us the $800+ Funk's was going to charge us - who knows how much labor would have added to this. What started out as a blown radiator turned into an 8 month saga (from April to Dec of this year) - and I'm no longer sure whether the blown head gasket wasn't a result of not fixing the radiator correctly the 1st time - wouldn't they have checked for leakage when they fixed the rad? So we will certainly not be going back there nor recommending them to anyone. read more

I brought my 2003 Range Rover in to have the front timing cover seals replaced, and a new water pump installed. I had done a lot of research, and had a long laundry list of things that often go wrong with the BMW engine in my Rover, mine was at 150k miles. I wanted everything done just for peace of mind. I told Art, keep the car I'm not in a rush, the car was there for about a month, and they worked on it between jobs. He charged me for the waterpump and timing cover seals, but did so much more (chain tensioner, 4 PCV hoses, oil separator, PCV plate, half a dozen o-ring seals, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets. There were so many little things that required extra hours, but he never billed me for them. Things like repairing stripped threads, or having to remove the intake manifold to replace the one hose that never gets replaced because it's a pain to get to. The amount of work they did would have cost me about $1000 extra from the dealer, they charge extra for every stripped bolt they have to fix. I also feel like the dealer wouldn't change the timing tensioner for free since the front cover is off, they would rather it fail a year later so they can charge you for a second round of tear down. I've been going to Funks for several years, he also did a timing belt and water pump on my Audi TT. Overall very happy with the work done. Best to call, emails take a couple days to get a response, that's my only gripe. read more

I have been a customer of funks for several years now. The owner Art is great, he is down to earth, honest, and helpful. He is always willing to answer all my questions, shows me what he did, and give reasonable prices, many times giving discounts off the labor. I would recommend his shop. Only question I have is how frequent his mechanics get training. read more

My husband and I have been taking our cars to Art for over 10 years. We've always had the best service and experience. As a female, I am hesitant to take my car into a shop, feeling as though I will be upsold. Art has always been very honest and genuine in the services that are recommended or required and his prices are very reasonable. He's our go to for car repairs and definitely recommend! read more

Quick Review - If you need a trustworthy, ethical, reliable, and fair mechanic Funk's Auto Works IS 100% the place! Do not hesitate, bring your car in. More Details - I am an engineer and I am often times too detailed and too anal retentive, especially when it comes to someone working on my vehicles. So, when I was trying to find a place to work on our different cars I was definitely cautious. You can probably just look at the ratings for Funk's and see right away these guys get it. If you take care of the customer, offer them sound advice, fair prices and care you will receive repeat business. Well, I did this with one of my vehicles, my 2003 BMW 330I last year when it was failing smog. They detailed the repair, the pricing, and seemed very fair. I back checked the work they discussed and the pricing was very competitive and was consistent with what they communicated. I have been servicing it with them ever since. So, when my 2006 Acura MDX went out of warranty I took it to Funk's Auto. I am completely satisfied with their group and would not hesitate in recommending them. Their shop certainly is not as flashy as those dealership shops, but do not let that dissuade you as the pricing will certainly be better. read more

My dad and I will only let this place work on our cars. We have been going here for as long as I remember. Thank you Art and to your crew for always doing a great job and being honest. read more

Art is knowledgeable, friendly and gave us excellent service. We brought our BMW X5 in for brakes. I had compared pricing with other shops, and his pricing was the most reasonable. Another shop I called quoted prices similar to what a dealership would charge. Art answered all our questions about the vehicle and did a thorough inspection as well. I'm happy to have found Art because we've been struggling to find an auto service shop in the area that provides excellent service and quality work! read more

Ken and Art do a good job there. They're fair and consistent. Art ( I think he's the owner) doesn't try to sell you services you don't need and BS you. I am a glad to use them and haven't gone back to any other shops. I have a Volvo and they do the stuff that I don't have time to do or have the equipment for. They give me a ride to work and go out of their way to take care of you. Good overall and I recommend them. read more

Funk's Auto is the place you want to bring your car, if you need it repaired. Art and ken are honest and very polite. I had a great experience with them. It's hard to find a good mechanic. But I was lucky to find them, thanks to the previous reviewers. I highly recommend Funk's Auto. read more

Been meaning to write a review for Funk's. This is hands down one of the best repair shops around. It's no surprise that this place has been around for more than 20 years. Art and Ken are honest, reliable, and straightforward mechanics, who make sure you know what they'll be doing, and are able to answer any questions you have. I have never driven my car out of their lot unsatisfied with the work they've done, and I think I'll be able to keep my car running smoothly far longer with these guys around. From simple oil services to more costly repairs, I would recommend Funk's for just about anything. read more

I drive a 1999 Honda Accord. Nothing fancy, but they still took great care of me. I called at 3:30 on a Friday (shortly before they were closing for the weekend) and they invited me to stop by anytime before 5:30. I was leaking antifreeze. I had called a couple other highly rated auto shops close by, but no one seemed willing to see me since it was so close to closing for the weekend. With a problem like this, I knew I couldn't wait to find out what was going on. They explained how to fill the radiator with water to make sure I didn't overheat on the way to the shop. They gave me a preliminary diagnosis as soon as I got there and even said they understood if I needed to take it somewhere else over the weekend. At first they were going to replace the radiator hoses and the temperature gauge, but when I brought it in on Monday, he said he had been thinking about it and didn't think I needed to replace the temperature gauge. Saved me $30 or so. A very nice gesture considering the usual "suck you dry" attitude. I'm a young female without much auto knowledge, and for the first time ever, I didn't feel like I was being taken. read more
