We've wanted to come here for a really long time ever since we walked past this place when we went to check out the cool graffiti alley. The live music and the unusual name caught our eye. It's an Eastern European bar serving alcohols and food traditional to that part of the world. The menu is unique - something I've never seen in too many places. So you get that authenticity right from the start. The alcohols (rakija) look like they're reasonable (like $5, $7) but they're served in tiny quantities but super concentrated. So you can down it quickly (although not recommended) and keep getting more. The food is really good too. I had their cracked wheat with mushroom starter and my husband got beef swekers. Both of us enjoyed our food thoroughly. It felt like a very hearty meal. Again, the food, like alcohol, doesn't feel expensive but the quantities are also on the smaller side. The best part of Drom is the atmosphere and the live music. They had two amazing bands the night we were there. They request that you donate and almost guilt you into doing so but as a place that doesn't charge cover for such good music, it's not a bad idea to support local talent. We loved the atmosphere - it was so vibrant! No wonder they are always busy and have a wait. Luckily we didn't have to wait because we went early on a Saturday and we were in a bigger group but for a party of two, we saw that the wait is longer and it can be tricky snagging a table. Drom Taberna is one super hip bar perfectly situated on Queen West. The patio is super popular, with a live band on the weekend playing mesmerising gypsy music. Some of the cocktails are quite unique and tasty, such as the Beton (Becherovka, tonic water, grapefruit slice), and Bloody Revolution (vodka, beet kvass, horseradish, pickle). I haven't tried to food, but it looks like a very nice variety of tapas-style European dishes, including succulent looking kebabs. After 11pm the patio winds down, but the party continues well into the night indoors. Two bands performed very upbeat music (a rock band, followed by band playing traditional Madagascar music.) The place is trendy and hipster and I really wanted to like it from the moment I stepped in. People are friendly, the decor is very cool, and cocktail names are hilarious. However, the music wasn't great and the food left a lot to be desired. We had pierogis, borscht, chicken skewers, and goulash, all were quite mediocre. I have many friends who like Drom, so maybe we were just unlucky with our visit. Well, we will try to give it another try in summer and update this review if we like it better this time. read more

Drom is one of my favourite spots in Toronto. I love the way they showcase local bands, and I truly appreciate their efforts through out the pandemic to organize outdoor performances. The ambience has always been great in my experience - lively, energetic, yet somehow intimate. I can't confirm the authenticity of the food, but it seems they take a general approach to Eastern European cuisine... I mean... I enjoyed everything I ordered. The drink list is fun and there are lots of unique liquors to try. And it seems they are always doing new things with seasonal ingredients. The service has always been friendly. Yes it can get very busy and rowdy, but honestly compared to other similar venues, I found them to be quick and on top of the chaos. THE BASICS We've been huge fans of Drom Taberna from the day they opened and want to find a way to support them during the Covid lockdown. Drom is the sister restaurant to La Palette, Queen Street West's fixture (and best, IOHO) French bistro. Drom has quickly established a well-deserved notoriety for it's genuine underground culture vibe, delicious affordable Eastern European food (best enjoyed on their great patio lockdowns permitting) and, of course, the spectacular live music. We're always a little nervous about ordering takeout from restaurants that have always focused on dine in, but in this case we needn't have worried. Drom Taberna's food is, as it turns out, perfect for delivery; everything travels well and reheats beautifully. THE SERVICE While it may seem odd to include comments on service for a delivery meal we beg to differ. Good service is good service, no matter what the circumstances, and in this case the folks at Drom Taberna were super helpful in helping us place an order. We called two days in advance and asked them to put together a menu to celebrate a special evening at home for under $100. They put together a lovely meal on budget, and delivered it precisely on time and with good humour. We couldn't have been more happy with the end-to-end service. THE FOOD (*Note: all prices are before 13% HST) The menu is a mix of Eastern European and Balkan fare. It's all very sharable and really suits a casual evening of grazing with a loved one. In an ideal world (read: pre-pandemic) it's great food to share with friends while listening to music and indulging in a few (OK, maybe many! lol) drinks. Goulash - This is possibly the best goulash we have ever had, rivalling our previous "best ever" - a platter of heavenly goulash we devoured at a renowned Hungarian restaurant in Warsaw. Goulash is a rich, flavour-packed meat stew with vegetables. The main flavor profile is Hungry's famous paprika. This is great cool weather noshing, and all-season comfort food. We mop up every drop of the rich sauce at the end, leaving our plates spotless before they hit the dishwasher. Pro tip: for two people order the large portion and save a little bit for breakfast. This goulash with runny yolk, fried egg is outrageous (it would be awesome with a poached egg as well). $16.95 (half portion for $10.17). Ćevapi - Full disclosure; we're addicted to these. They are wonderfully grilled Bosnian beef and veal kabobs bursting with juicy flavour. Tuck one into some of the bread they provide, top it with the red pepper relish (ajvar) and the cream cheese sauce (kajmak), then add a generous amount of the paper-thin slices of onion they provide, and enjoy the mouth pleasure! 5 pcs. $13.56; 10 pcs. $23.56 - worth every penny! Mushrooms - Eastern European cuisine is famous for its mastery of all things mushrooms. These king oyster and cremini mushrooms were cooked with garlic, onions, kale and herbs, all tossed in a delicious green adjika sauce. This is a dish full of deep flavours - umami for days, as we've described it to friends. $15.85 Potato - these pan roasted fingerling potatoes are a thing of beauty. Cooked with garlic butter and green adjika they have a creamy texture that seemed to melt in the mouth. They were so good that we broke our long-standing rule about keeping some fingerlings for next day pan frying (trust us, this is a good rule) and just devoured them all at our evening sitting. Rule breaking can be sooo satisfying. $7.91 Burek - we've had some disappointing burek in the past, but this one was absolutely delicious. This dish is similar to spanakopita: buttery and flaky pastry filled with spinach and feta. It was the best one we've had! ($10.17) Just a note for those fans of Pierogi (we know you're out there). We didn't have them as part of this meal, but have had them when dine-in was an option. Because of the Polish heritage of one half of our dynamic duo people ask us to comment on pierogi all the time, so we're weighing in on this one. To be honest, this is the only dish on Drom Taberna's menus that we would not order again. While the cheese and potato filling is just right, they came coated in rosemary breadcrumbs, which we weren't fans of. That's just a matter of personal preference, we're sure others would try this and enjoy them. THE BOOZE Misha - Drom Taberna's face to the world - has been creating his own vodka infusions. They're delicious. We enjoyed one flavoured with clementines and bitters. It made for a perfect digestivo for two. Perhaps fittingly we've forgotten the price of the booze on this night - oops! THE PRICE We've listed prices for all the dishes so will summarize by saying that Drom Taberna's prices are very reasonable, particularly in light of the quality and quantity of food that you get in each order. Our entire meal came in at under $100 (mystery priced booze, HST and delivery included). Great value for money! read more

At Drom Taberna, I was able to satisfy my cravings and had some European dishes. I was able to try here the cabbage rolls, cevapi (kebabs), beet salad and goulash poutine. The cabbage rolls was my favourite here. Seasoned well, great texture while the kebabs were a great hit. Reasonable portions with a great sauce to dip in! The beet salad was simple but flavourful, nothing unique, and lastly the poutine was average. This dish did have a crunch, however the meat ratio was more than the fries so I couldn't enjoy the combination together properly. * Overall, I'd recommend those looking to try European food, to visit here. There was a live band playing in the background which made it quite nice. However I should mention that the patio (at least the section I sat in) was not heated at all! There were a few heaters spread out however it didn't help with the coldness, or some of them weren't on. Also, reservations are highly recommended. One of my favorite spots on Queen St by far. I've been coming here since they opened, I was a loyal fan of the previous resto in the same location (rip Tortilla Flats). I love their unique take on Eastern European foods. The beer list is fantastic. The goulash here is amazing, get the full sized one (you will want it all). The pickles are great too. It's fun to go on a night when they have live music right on the street. As long as they always serve that delicious goulash I'll keep coming back. Long live Drom. read more

Limiting staying for a maximum of two hours is not acceptable. We decided to have a couple of drinks each before ordering food. We ate and planned to make a full night here until we were summarily informed that our 2 hours was nearly up. What? The server (who was great) has the unpleasant task of telling customers they must leave after taking their money. We were not advised in advance of this policy. We had two choices... Leave or go on a short waiting list for a different table. In fact there was no actual wait, as we were shown to another table as far back from the band as you can get. It was almost funny, except that we had a chat with (one of) the owners who tried to explain the policy by saying they were just trying to provide opportunity for more locals (?) to see the live music. Hmm, yeah right. On its face that might make sense, but in reality this is simply a well worn technique for customer turnover. On average it's less likely that your existing customer is going to continue to spend more than the next new customer with an empty belly. Simple economics, but bad customer retention policy. They only care about the next customer after you've paid. So, after arguing with an owner for a few minutes about this, I concluded by saying, "... they were simply trying to squeeze money out of people". He stormed off calling me a "bad man". :-) I guess I was... for calling it out for what it was. We finished our beers, ordered from our second class table, and left the Drom Taverna for the last time. I noticed in another review that the owner replied to someone saying that we are not just customers, but are guests. But you don't treat guests or clients that way! Make no mistake, a stranger off the street is just a temporary 2 hour customer. Sad really. (Edit. Just read some other reviews on Google maps and was surprised by the many mentions of general service. The staff seemed great when I've been there twice now. But... I do find it very unprofessional that some of the replies by owner (Google reviews) were somewhat confrontational. Best to stay positive and accept that the customer is usually right (if you hope to have them back, and maybe you don't). Fair enough. Your choice. And if you can't be contrite and apologetic about a negative review, then say nothing. The condescending attitude will be a deterrent for many going by these reviews. If you don't want to be humiliated, go ANYWHERE else. How can this place make a great drag show be zero fun? incredibly disrespectful. we were PARENTS of a member of the band! We paid cover for the band at 6pm, for 6 people $120, then again at 8:30 for the remaining 4 -$80 for the second show. Band was great. halfway thru the second show they - very oddly - stopped service saying we drank too much. 1 - 1.5 drinks/hour (4 in an hour) we were sitting, and watching with no incident, we reached out the next day (and have done so twice now) wanting to show receipts and ask why we were so humiliatingly singled out in front of our kid in the band, saying we just wanted to be heard on the matter. They have not shown us the courtesy of even responding. This bar is not the safe space they want you to think they are, they appear happy to humiliate paying customers for no reason. I'm now seeing so many other reviews that say they had similar experiences which is making me feel better because we thought it was such a shocking way to be treated. Awful experience. read more

Drom Taberna is a cozy spot with live music. They offer a variety of Eastern European snacks and some hilariously-named cocktails. I went on a Sunday night and it was packed (which, after 2 pandemic years, was very refreshing). After being greeted by a person in an trendy red hat, I was seated quickly. The food I ordered was top notch. I loved their beef burek, pickles and cevapi. The food is on the pricier side considering the portion size but you could still order yourself a 5 piece cevapi and fries for under $20. Service was super friendly. The guy who introduced the band was enthusiastically encouraging customers to tip the band almost to the point of being overzealous. That didn't bother me though, the band was amazing and deserved a tip for sure. I can't wait to revisit once their patio is open, the live music and food made me want to come back again. 5 days in Toronto, 2 trips to Drom Taberna. First by accident, second time by choice, no regrets. First time: We happen to walk by Drom on the half hour walk back to our stay after a mediocre dinner. Heard lovely music coming out of Drom and thought what the heck, let's check it out. The guy in front of us waiting in line gave it rave reviews, and Drom lived up to the hype. Music: so good. Vibe: YES. Service: everyone was awesome. Drinks: SO good. Food menu: looked good but was too full to partake. Had a grand ol' time. Second time: was searching for a dinner around our stay a few days later, got annoyed and thought for the same amount of time sifting through BS, we could have walked to Drom by now and had the food we were eyeing. So there we walked again. Hell yea x 2. Turns out food is excellent as well. ALSO, how is there no cover and pretty much everything is $15 and below. What a steal. Maybe I don't know what the going rate of things are in Toronto but if we have a Drom back home I'd be there weekly. Will come back every time I visit Toronto! read more

They have good drink options and a nice patio in the back, most of the tables are shaded and they offer live music or open mic daily. Good place to enjoy some decent priced drinks and Eastern European food. I got fries which are made from scratch and crispy, and saw pierogies and charcuterie board on the menu. I'm a 39 year old heart transplant survivor that is visiting home (I currently live in Dubai) to celebrate my 10th transplant anniversary! My friend and I were having a random Saturday night and he said he'd been here once for a drink so it was around 1am and we walked up to the line to pay and go in to enjoy some music and have a drink to end the night and the celebration. "Host" with major attitude simply looks at us saying not tonight boys with no specific explanation, I asked if anything looked wrong with us and he said not at all, just not tonight and went on about trying to explain how "I have to know this city at certain hours we're not to go in and it was just friends and family" while he was letting in ladies of course and some random guy! I never experienced this in all my years in Toronto and elsewhere especially in my recent years, I called to ask to a manager who actually went on to give me a whole shpeel about how they survived Covid and bad things happened to them and they're barely making they're rent and a bunch of details I have nothing to do with and why their hosts might get a little edgy and that us men suck and are dangerous (it was a super weird conversation) and then went on to attack me because I shared that my friend recommended the place (so he said he was being honest the whole time and now I'm changing my words because I originally said I didn't know about Drom - which I didn't) Business have been through a lot I understand but Covid is over and the city is back and alive again, and I'm a paying customer with a special situation that chose their venue to celebrate in, but felt racially profiled (even though he went on to explain that they have Arabic bands), by his explanation I felt like I'm potentially the most dangerous looking person in the city (you should see me), and he raised my blood pressure for being treated so poorly for no reason! No matter how amazing the vibe might be in this place, never make your potential clients feel like this using Covid as an excuse?! read more

I kinda don't want to let you in on the secret (not really a secret) of Drom...it's relatively new on the scene and features live music every night of the week. And I'm talking World Music, everything from Latin vibes to Middle Eastern, European and beyond. Last Saturday they had a band influenced by the sounds of both Iraq and France, with a featured musician from Ukraine who played an instrument I've never seen before...and he played it like a real virtuoso. This is truly a multicultural smorgasbord of musical awesome-sauce (new slogan?) Enter through the back and pay your cover which (whenever I've been there) includes a delicious complimentary shot. On weekends (11pm and onwards, in my experience) the place is BUMPING...such an eclectic, unpretentious crowd vibing and dancing to some stellar musicians. Drom is one of the most underrated drink and food stop in Toronto. It ostensibly seems like an ordinary average restaurant but its drinks and unique menu begs to differ. I tried the Beton (Becherovka, tonic, grapefruit) [~$8] during my first visit here and this concoction that fuses European and Slavic influences remains one of my favorite cocktails to date. On my second visit, I tried the Balkanizer (Slivovitz, Campari, Amaro Montenegro) [~$12] and the delicious Čevapi, both of coated my palette with distinctive and satisfying flavors. Amongst its slew of Queen Street neighbors, Drom Taberna is an affordable spacious option. While I have only visited this joint during the afternoon when it is still commodious, I know it has garnered a name amongst the jazz community for its live brimful shows during the evenings. read more

Five stars for sure awarded to this new taberna! One of the five owners came to my table to tell me the story of the name of this new Eastern European influenced tavern in the heart of Queen West. "It's means gypsy", he said alluding to the same iconic story common throughout Eastern Europe. The wine is there, a huge variety of vodka shots, as well as a fantastic selection of cultural appropriate beers including one of my favourite beers from visiting over seas, Jever Pilsener, the brand guaranteed not to leave you feeling rough the next day due to its natural ingredients. I had a snack, which was a bowl of their borscht along with rye bread, as well as a decent pint of beer. The borscht was perfect! Nice al dente cooked veg in a sweet veg broth for the lighter summer season, with beef introduced in the coming colder weather in the fall when you need to bulk up. The booking for entertainment here is top notch, and could possibly become a new world music venue only rivalled by some of the top spots downtown. Walking by, I was treated to some gypsy dancing with live folk band, with flamenco dancing by artists just back from Portugal coming later this week, followed by a famous Russian DJ spinning vintage vinyl. Went there on Tuesday evening wanting to just get a few drinks and a quick bite. When we went in, we could see that the place was pretty empty. The host was kind of apprehensive of letting us in for no apparent reason. We had a Dollarama bag with stuff we just bought (you could tell) and he asked us what's in the bag in a rude tone. He went, whats in there? Why does that matter? Just did not get a good vibe from the place, maybe because it was a Tuesday and the we didn't really get a warm welcome right at the door. read more

Awful customer service. Do not bother putting yourself on waitlist as they make you wait and then when you return they are rude and very obnoxious. Had an awful experience with the check-in person on Feb 26, 2022 night at 23:00 hrs. He made us wait for over an hour and then spoke to us in a very unprofessional way; screamed out his name for us to write a negative review. What a moron? All we wanted to do was to listen to some music and support our local resturant. I will never go to this resturant ever again. I felt racialized as I am a person of colour. It has definitely gotten worse since I was here last time. The food is very overpriced ($16 for a small piece of chicken with no sides) and doesn't taste good. Unfortunately the service was just as bad and servers needed to be chased to take orders.
