    Hungry tata lunch
    Ada L.

Hasting Snack Bar is a small restaurant in Leslieville located at Hastings Ave and Queen St E. (closest big street would be Greenwood). The small eatery serves a variety of Polish comfort food for breakfast and lunch. They have a small menu where you can order things like perogies as well as cabbage rolls. They also have a variety of daily specials as well. Lastly, they also serve coffee. I dropped by Hasting Snack Bar on a Friday for lunch. Currently, due to the pandemic restrictions, they are takeout only. I was able to call in ahead to put in my order where my food took about 15 min to prepare. I opted to try the Hungry Tata Lunch which contained a mixture of items including a kielbasa sausage, perogies, sauerkraut, half a pickle and a cabbage roll. The meal overall was very filling that I could not finish the whole thing! The food reminded me of my travels in Poland and I was happy with the meal. Overall, good service and delicious food. Would definitely recommend checking them out if you are around the area!

I've passed by this place many times during my walks but haven't had the chance to stop in during their openings hours (only during the day) until today. So glad to have finally try this neighborhood gem! It's a small polish eatery that has rotating daily specials. Today I picked up some pierogies (meat ones & cottage cheese) and they were delish! Will be coming back soon for the cabbage rolls & soup...and everything else ! :)

Better tip if you want your food to be edible.

You are forced to tip or give them a present. Otherwise, you better check your food. It was probably tampered with what kind of service is that? Why should I tip you if you provide poor service? The ambiance here basically is watch your back.

Polish comfort food. Cute little diner with bar seating, where the little bell rings as you open the door. Friendly servers chat with you just like an old friend. Or they sometimes thunderously run downstairs to grab some fresh perogies just for you. Had the hungry Tata's lunch $15 which consists of 4 perogies of any kind, cabbage roll, kielbasa, sauerkraut and pickle. Very filling as soft music blare through the speakers. Also 1 bite of the Polish donut (between 4 people) of the raspberry kind. There is also plum and custard flavour.

This is the place to be if you want good ol' Polish comfort food. Only about a dozen seats inside which are all counter seating. Friendly staff that treat you like regulars. My friends and I all ordered the Hungry Tata's lunch which had an assortment of pierogies (traditional, Canadian, Sauerkraut &Mushrooms, meat), cabbage roll, kielbasa sausage, sauerkraut and pickle. The food gives you a warm feeling inside and brings back nostalgic memories of me eating this in Europe a few years ago. It's nothing fancy, just comforting. Sometimes simplicity and authenticity is all that is needed for a great meal. The server was also a little baffled when my friends and I shared one raspberry Polish donut between 4 people. If we were not going around the city eating all day I would have gotten a whole donut for myself (trying the custard next time). Very affordable food. Good place to go to whatever mood you're in. The food gives you a warm welcoming hug either way. =)

Be transported to a old school polish kitchen in Leslieville (ya, convenient!) Get the big lunch, has your choice of 4 periogies, keibasa, a cabbage roll, slaw, you'll be stuffed trust me. Owners are delightful and seriously just want to stuff your face.

Service is a bit slow but good place for comfort food! All the seats are bar stools and you sit along the bar table. You can also watch your food being made at the stove top behind the bar. Polish food is not known to be vegetarian-friendly but glad they had veg option for most of their food options. Had the vegetarian pierogis and vegetarian cabbage roll which were both filling and delicious.

I must admit, I was a little disappointed, when, after reading Kat F's review, the owner asked me what I wanted. Eggs and bacon, of course! This place is a total throwback - the lunch counter conversation was all about how computers are taking over the world and how kids don't even know about typewriters. I guess working on a laptop while waiting might have flagged me. All in all, though, pretty welcoming and friendly. Builders were popping in regularly for takeout fried egg sandwiches, so that's always an option if you're in a rush. To the food - not the cheapest breakfast, but a good one. Eggs cooked perfectly, a big helping of peameal, potatoes, and toast. Coffee good, too. I hope you like milk in your coffee, because you'll get it without asking. I wouldn't bring little-little kids here - all the seating is fixed stools with no back and no way to attach a high chair/booster without a visit to family services/ER in your future.

Friendly staff and cozy space. The we had was amazing!! Polish Breakfast (only $8) and it comes with two eggs, parowka (polish weenie), two potato pancakes, polish bread. It was really good and filling, especially the potato pancakes. Hungry Tata's Lunch Plate comes with one cabbage roll, one kielbasa, four perogies, sauerkraut, pickle and polish bread. It screams comfort food and it's super delicious. You can taste the home made goodness! We will be back for sure!! Welcome to the hood!!

This is one of those neighbourhood gems. That little place that flies under the radar from the outside - the place that most people don't now about. Unless they live nearby - and even then... I love these types of places. Small, friendly, family-run, filled with ingredients & recipes from their heritage, and completely unpretentious. Bonus: There are counter seats! The service is friendly. The prices are more than reasonable. The food is yummy and comforting. Oh - and they give you a delicious Polish caramel/toffee candy with your bill :) Heads-up: It's cash only! (Though there's an ATM on-site in case you forget.) Food details: I ordered Tata's Lunch Plate - which includes a mix of pierogies, a Kielbasa sausage, a huge cabbage roll, coleslaw, and a pickle. A huge plate of food! I really enjoyed the pierogies and the Kielbasa sausage in particular. I'm not a big fan of Polish cabbage rolls - this was was tasty, but just not in my wheelhouse. Overall, a super filling and tasty lunch. Great value too. I think the lunch plate was $14-$15 only!

The owner (I believe she is the owner) greeted us and told us we could sit anywhere. She brought us water and menus. My sister and I ordered 2 cabbage rolls, Potato and Cheese Pierogies, Meat Pierogies with bacon and onions to share. For my son, we tried ordering the schnitzel sandwich, but was told that was unavailable. My son doesn't eat mashed potatoes so I asked if I could just order him a schnitzel and she said yes. The food came out in about 15 minutes. The cabbage rolls were fantastic, the perfect amount of acidity in the sauce. I really don't like tomatoes or cabbage, but there is something special about the cabbage rolls. I ate very bit of mine. The pierogies were wonderful. I usually prefer just potato and cheese, but honestly between those and the meat, I couldn't decide which I liked more. Both were flavorful especially with the sauteed onions and sour cream. My son's schnitzel was huge! He could only eat about half of it and when my son asked for ketchup (much to my dismay) the owner was very nice about it and commented that's the way her daughter likes it too. Honestly the food was absolutely wonderful and the service was great. It was very similar to what I had in Poland. If this restaurant was closer to my home I would visit often. We had no issue with parking. We were able to get a spot on the street right in front of the restaurant. Parking was also not too expensive since you aren't in the downtown area. If you are in the area and want a wonderful meal, be sure to visit.

The pierogi were the highlight for me. They're flatter than the dumplings I'm used to, and I was surprised by how potato-forward they were. We tried the potato and cheese as well as the potato and onion, and personally I thought the potato and onion had more flavor. We also tried the sausage and mushroom version, which was good too, but the potato fillings were definitely the more memorable ones. I would not recommend ordering 6 or 12 pierogi for one person unless you are very hungry, because it is a lot and you only get one flavor. The better choice is probably one of the larger combo plates, which gives you 3 pierogi plus a few classic sides and mains. The sampler-style plate was actually a great way to try more of the menu. It came with pierogi, hunter's stew, schnitzel, pickled vegetables, and condiments, and it was more than enough for one person. The hunter's stew had a strong sauerkraut flavor, and the schnitzel was thin, crispy, not too greasy, and very satisfying. We also ordered the cabbage rolls, which came in a big portion with tomato sauce. They were decent, but for me the filling was a little mild and the portion felt too large. We tried a Polish beer as well, though honestly I could not tell much of a difference. Overall, this is a family-run restaurant with a simple, homey atmosphere rather than a fancy one, but it is clearly popular for a reason. The food is hearty, comforting, and worth trying, especially if you want a casual place to explore Polish cuisine.

Street parking was reasonably easy to find. We were seated way back in the restaurant and the seating was a little uncomfortable as our table was set up right next to the bar (but way too close to the bar, because our table was long) and other patrons had to constantly shimmy through a small gap between our table and the bar to get to the washrooms downstairs. Not great. We ordered a family style meals to share (combo for 2 and a combo for 4) and the amount of food that came out was probably enough to feed 10 very hungry adults. Definitely do not indulge on the bread basket that comes before the meal, because you will need to save room for the main event. The massive platters came loaded with pierogies, 2 different types of cabbage rolls (my favs!), schnitzels, and various condiments (?) of cooked beets, carrots, cabbages...etc. We were first served 1 different soups; white borscht and beet soup and both were tasty. The meat dumplings in the beet soup balanced out the sweetness of the broth and it worked well. I personally preferred the white borscht which was perfectly sour and a slightly over-powering sausage taste. The refreshing cucumber salad with dill in sour cream was a great accompaniment to somewhat heavy tasting meal. The hunters stew was a hearty bowl of tender morsels of meat, potato dumplings in a well balanced tomato based sauce. Although most of our food was great, we found the cabbage rolls (the traditional tomato version) and the schnitzels too dry. And along with the issue of having to deal with people constantly brushing by, I am taking away 2 stars. I may revisit Cafe Polonez if I'm back in the area, but not in a huge rush either.

The restaurant is small, but vast enough that you won't feel squashed. The "buffet" is situated to the side, with menu items framed behind it on mounted shelves and a mural painted next to the shelves. You tell them what you want and they scoop it for you. A TV plays in the very back and the drink cooler sits across from the buffet as well. We ordered the following: Cabbage rolls combo with buckwheat and cabbage on the side. It was basically stuffed cabbage. Hubs & daughter thought this was good, but it was no big deal. It was ok. Mushrooms and cabbage pierogi and cheese and potatoes pierogi - Overall these were good but we've had better. Hubs only had the mushrooms and cabbage pierogi and he said that he enjoyed this better than the entrees. Somehow, he didn't get to try the cheese and potatoes pierogi. Schnitzel with green beans and potato pancake- Daughter liked the schnitzel and thought that the sides were ok. Hubs thought the schnitzel and the potato pancakes could've used a little more crisp and that it should be fried a little bit longer. Taste wise was ok. The string beans were overcooked and reminded him of school cafeteria. He always wanted to try it but felt disappointed. Tripe soup - We over got to eat this while there, so Hubs had it a few days later. He said that this was pretty good. It was beefy and the tripe was nice and soft. This was one of the better tripes he's had in his lifetime. Daughter is diabetic and wanted diet soda but they didn't have any, so she ended up getting water. The restaurant was cute but it was cold.
