My sister, son and I came in for dinner on a weeknight. The restaurant was empty inside and we remained the only patrons dining in when we visited. A few people did place to-go orders. The owner (I believe she is the owner) greeted us and told us we could sit anywhere. She brought us water and menus. My sister and I ordered 2 cabbage rolls, Potato and Cheese Pierogies, Meat Pierogies with bacon and onions to share. For my son, we tried ordering the schnitzel sandwich, but was told that was unavailable. My son doesn't eat mashed potatoes so I asked if I could just order him a schnitzel and she said yes. The food came out in about 15 minutes. The cabbage rolls were fantastic, the perfect amount of acidity in the sauce. I really don't like tomatoes or cabbage, but there is something special about the cabbage rolls. I ate very bit of mine. The pierogies were wonderful. I usually prefer just potato and cheese, but honestly between those and the meat, I couldn't decide which I liked more. Both were flavorful especially with the sauteed onions and sour cream. My son's schnitzel was huge! He could only eat about half of it and when my son asked for ketchup (much to my dismay) the owner was very nice about it and commented that's the way her daughter likes it too. Honestly the food was absolutely wonderful and the service was great. It was very similar to what I had in Poland. If this restaurant was closer to my home I would visit often. We had no issue with parking. We were able to get a spot on the street right in front of the restaurant. Parking was also not too expensive since you aren't in the downtown area. What a lovely meal!!! My sis, nephew and I came in on a Tuesday night while we were in town. We knew we wanted the peirogies because we both love them and hadn't had any great ones since Poland last year. When we walked in we were immediately greeted. We were seated and water brought out. We ordered the meat pierogis with bacon and onion, potato and cheese pierogis with onion and cabbage rolls. My nephew got the schnitzel. The pierogis were so lovely! They were fresh and tender, the filling was wonderful!! The cabbage rolls were very good. I am not big on tomatoes or cabbage but love cabbage rolls and these did not disappoint! There was a flavor I did not know but it was wonderful. I would gladly eat any of these items again! The service was great. The woman who served us was attentive and was very sweet. Came in for a late dinner (7:30 pm) and not a soul in sight. Apprehensive, but feeling adventurous, we entered Kovalsky (particularly because of the yelp reviews XD). Sadly, the food we encountered was pretty average. Side dishes - flavourless and watery were the mashed potatoes and salad. The salad was creamy but tasted like nothing so it felt like I was just adding on useless calories. :( Perogies tasted frozen and watery too (perhaps boiled in a haste). Schnitzel had a nice crisp and wasn't greasy but also lacked distinct flavour. It might have tasted better if we had chose to pay extra to add on sauce. There was only one person running the place from greeting, taking your order, cooking, and cashing us out, and she did everything very well! I hesitate to give 3 stars because although the service was nice, the food made it feel like an overall bland experience so it's more like a 2.5 for me (wish we can do .5 on yelp!). read more

Food Rating: 4.5* Our next stop in our Schnitzel Safari was Kovalsky in Etobicoke. We came after 4pm on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only customers besides another table. The restaurant is fairly small with a small bar and a row of tables. I was pleasantly surprised that the decor was not outdated and is fairly nice. The decor is not one of the strongest point in the Schnitzel restaurants that I have visited so far. Street parking is available in front of the restaurant. Service was great and would have been worrisome if it wasn't as we were the only customers. The waitress answered all of our questions and was very prompt with our order and refills of water. We ordered the Schnitzel Dinner for two with Cabbage Rolls, Pierogies, Mashed Potatoes and assorted salads and the Bacon Schnitzel. The Dinner Combo price includes wine but substract $10 if you don't want any. Prices are comparable to other Schnitzel restaurants. Portions size were good. They are not biggest but you won't leave the restaurant hungry. The Schnitzel were delicious. I believe that it was better than Cafe Polonez but not as good as the Country Style Hungarian Restaurant. The meat was tender and lightly breaded just the way I like it. I wish it came with a sauce but I also forgot to ask if they had any. The Cabbage Rolls were excellent too. The Pierogies were okay but it probably has a lot to do with the fact that I'm not into it as much as the other dishes. When my boyfriend and I walked in here at 6:30pm it was surprisingly empty. The server came out as soon as we got in and served us water right away once we were seated. We got the dinner for 2 special ($46) with 2 schnitzels, 2 cabbage rolls, 10 pierogies (we got both meat and potato & cheese ones), 6 scoops of mashed potato, with assorted salads and 1/2 litre of wine. Everything arrived very quickly! The schnitzels were thin and crispy but juicy. Cabbage rolls were flavoured well and the pierogies we so good! I really liked the meat ones. Excellent food just like my Baba used to make. The take out is as served fast, the portions were large and the borsch was especially good. I'm looking forward to dining in with friends and family in the near future and hitting the dance floor. My husband and I were in town and looking for something unique and low-key near where we were staying. He found Kovalsky and we decided to give it a try. I would go back in a heartbeat. There was plenty of street parking available (metered), and the atmosphere in the restaurant was quiet and relaxed. The server who greeted us was very warm and gracious and was attentive throughout the whole experience. I had seen some previous reviews that portion sizes were small, but if that used to be true, it isn't anymore! We each ordered schnitzel - regular for me and deluxe for my husband - and the portions were enormous. The schnitzel was perfectly tender inside and crispy outside and the mashed potatoes were delicious. I didn't try the salads, but if you're into coleslaw, red cabbage slaw, and cucumber salad, I'm sure you'd love them. We also shared an order of pierogies topped with sauteed onions, bacon, and sour cream, and they were truly delightful. They were stuffed full, not at all watery (as some other reviews had mentioned), and again, the portion size was generous. We weren't planning to eat dessert, but there was free ice cream included with the meal as a special, so we enjoyed that to cap off our dining experience. Dined out here with my lovely lady, in search of something different, perused the reviews of the place, and thought it looked like a decent place to indulge in some dinner. Not sure if they are an Uber eats place or something, as the weather was not horrendous, yet on a Saturday evening, we were the only patrons in this fine establishment. The restaurant was cute and cozy, with some nice photos of Poland gracing the walls, seating for maybe two dozen, the only thing I was not a fan of was the giant television over the 'bar' type area, as this is portrayed as a restaurant not a bar. It glared the news upon us as we dined, thankfully we were not glued to it, and for young ones it could be a healthy distraction, but the ambiance could be improved with the removal of it. Our server was prompt and courteous, we were not treated as a burden as mentioned in another review. She was quick to refill our waters when empty. Clear away plates and provided general attentiveness to us, so it made us feel welcomed and comfortable. I dined on the Kovalsky Schnitzel, my g/f had the potato pancake and goulash. Both portions were pretty significant. The egg accented the schnitzel (as I saw a prior review recommended having a sauce As their felt 'dry') the beet and coleslaw accompaniment sides were nice enough, the cucumber salad lacked, maybe some dill or spice to liven it up could have helped but also it was quite limp, as the cukes were sliced quite thin and likely made early on. Thicker slices would allow them to maintain a better consistency. No complaints on the potatoes, three cute scoops garnished with dill accented the plate. I sampled my partners dinner, the pancake was crisp, beef tender and sauce flavourful We shared a Belgian waffle for desert, it was nicely done, adorned with ice cream, whipped cream and strawberries, a fine finale to a pleasant dining experience. As Kovalsky's is around the corner from my g/f's home, I can see us returning there again eventually for another meal. read more

Dare I say that Kovalsky is the Café Polonez of the West-end? Located 4 blocks east of Royal York, Kovalsky is much smaller restaurant that Polonez. Since they're both Polish restaurants, menus have similar items, but Kovalsky's also has desserts. I *don't* remember Polonez having desserts. I could be wrong though 'cause I haven't been there for at least 2-3mths. Kovalsky's also offers different platter options WITH wine, as per the pic that I took. We ordered: Kopytca (Polish gnocchi/lazy vareniki) w/ Beef Goulash & Salads ($13.99), Breaded Chicken Breast w/ Mashed Potatos & Salads ($12.99), & Potato/Cheese Pierogies ($7.99/8). Everything was really delicious and freshly made! (We initially ordered Veg Cabbage Rolls, but they didn't have any.) The difference between the 2 restaurants was that Kovalsky's was marginally cheaper than Polonez, and food wasn't laden in salt. I found Polonez quite salty the last time I ate there. We've always loved Polish food. Cafe Pollonez is a little too much of a commute though when the craving hits. So imagine our surprise (and absolute delight) when we discovered this little restaurant less than 10 minutes away! Food: glorious. From the pierogis to the schnitzels to the cabbage rolls to the sausages - everything we've tried so far have been excellent. We want to go everyday so we can order each item on the menu! Service: warm and friendly. There's just always this one lady who does service when we're there (yes I am ashamed her name escapes me) but whether it's lunch or 6pm, she's sweet and patient and very nice. There is a little wait if they're full but nothing out of the ordinary. Their food is worth waiting for! Ambience: surprisingly, lovely. Because of where it's located, you'd expect this place to be a dive. But it is everything but. Today there are fresh tulips on the tables and there was even a small wedding party celebrating there! Price: today we paid almost $60 for two (including tip and a couple of beers). Not bad but also not cheap. I knocked a star off because of this (and parking is street - pet peeve!) If you love Polish food or have never tried it and want to fall in love, just go already! read more

Service/environment left me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. We came on a Monday evening, and during our 1.5hr stay, we were the only customers. The one waitress working didn't greet us, smile, say thank you, awkwardly approached us and left me feeling as if we weren't supposed to be there. During the time we were eating, she sat behind the bar and seemed miserable to be there. The restaurant was cold and turned off the lights to the basement where the washrooms were, it seemed as if they were trying to save on the energy costs regardless of the modern decor. I was craving pierogies one day and decided to search up a place on Yelp. I was directed to Kolvasky's as most of the reviews were good AND they have authentic Polish food! I haven't really had much pierogies or real Polish food in my life before as I've only had the ones from Costco...but I heard that they are not authentic. I Went with a friend on a Tuesday evening at around 7:30pm and we were the only ones there. The restaurant was clean and vibrant. It was very polish-like. The waitress greeted us and was very friendly and accommodating. I ordered the Kolvasky's Schnitzel ($13.99) that was served with 3 small scoops of mashed potato and a side salad, with a fried egg on top of the schnitzel. It is quite interesting because I've had other similar schnitzels from other countries before but never had it with an egg on top. The portion was huge! The schnitzel was huge too, and the flavour was okay, but it wasn't anything special. I also ordered a plate of pierogies ($7.99) for us to share and the waitress let me have half meat and half potatoes. The pierogies were stuffed! I liked it so much more than the schnitzel. I would definitely order this again if I come back. My friend ordered the polish sausage, which was served with bigos (traditional cabbage and meat stew) and 3 small scoops of mashed potato. I tried a little bit of the sausage and it was really salty for me. So I would suggest eating the sausage with the cabbage. My friend liked the dish thought it was delicious. Overall, the food was tasty. But they put A LOT OF MSG in their dishes because I was VERY thirsty for many hours afterwards. read more

It's so nice to see so many great reviews for a well-deserving establishment. Here's my five stars to help fortify the rating: My parents were in town a few weeks ago and I was eager for them to try Kovalsky. We've had (and loved) other Polish cuisine in the city but since moving to the west end, Kovalsky was the natural choice for us, not to mention the high regard for it here on Yelp. Since my parents can't get around very well any longer, we opted for takeout. I called and spoke to a gentleman, presumably Kris, who suggested that my order might take at least an hour to prepare, for what I assumed was because of how busy they must be. We agreed that I would call back in an hour's time to see where the order stood. Calling back, he said the order would be ready in about another 15 minutes. So I began my trip over. Upon arriving, I had absolutely nowhere to park. It was a busy Sunday, as I recall, and traffic was horrendous. I ended up about 3 blocks away on a residential street. It's a good thing I left early! When I entered the establishment it turned out Kovalsky was host to a private, what seemed to be, wedding party! (Lot's of kids, music and even dancing)! No wonder they said my order might be a while longer than usual! Completely understandable circumstances for a long order time. My packages came out quickly after I arrived and I headed home. We loved each and every part of the meal. The potato pancake was like a cloud, bursting with a rain of goulash heaven. The pancake actually had a bold potato flavour and the goulash was not at all too salty. The bigos, perogies and Polish sausage were all also top-notch. My parents are very discerning, particularly with food. They're very old-fashioned and would never enjoy any food gimmicks. There are no gimmicks with Kovalsky. Pure, unadulterated Polish goodness. Was very quiet here on a Wednesday. Food was tasty and freshly made. Service friendly and helpful. Had a platter for 2 and had more than enough that we took some home. Schnitzel not gargantuan sized like you get some places but tasty, crispy and good portion of meat. Cabbage rolls were big and sauce nice flavour. Wow! I come to this place once a week, and am completely addicted! The potato pancake with beef goulash is so delicious, it's definitely my favourite item on the menu. The perogies are good too, but I find the dill flavour to be a bit too strong for me. Service is always great, though some evenings during the week, there are very few customers, and sometimes they close early, which I find a bit frustrating. If I'm planning on coming later in the evening, I'll call beforehand, just to make sure they're open. read more

Was surprisingly not busy - though I guess we are talking about the Queensway on a Monday evening here... service was friendly and capable. Food was very good. Schnitzel, cabbage rolls, pierogis, cucumber salad, pickled beets, everything was great. Prices were very reasonable. Being Polish myself I already know polish food well, but this place brings you dishs that only Babcia (Grandma) knows how to make. After reading all of the reviews I had the potato pancake with beef goulash and it was one of the best dishes I have ever had. If you love latkes this is above and beyond the regular potato pancake. I have never had the Polish version of this and topped with goulash it was heaven. The salads were delicious as well. My dining partner had the schnitzel and raved about it and the said the mashed potatoes were heaven. The prices are amazing for such good quality great tasting food. The house wine is very good and very reasonably priced. This is the place to bring the family on a budget. The decor is lovely and the server was a sweetheart. This is our second time here and not disappointed at all! I love perogies and these are one of the best places to get them! My husband had the hunter schnitzel that he really enjoyed and I had the cheese and potatoes perogies with onions and sour cream. Polish night at this family restaurant in Etobicoke. It's a small place but it was pretty full with customers. I started off with the red borscht - red beets soup with dumplings. I'm never a big fan of beets but in a soup, it taste pretty good. Just don't wear a white shirt when you are drinking it. There were so many dishes we want to try so we ordered a few to share like family style! From cabbage rolls, schnitzel, pierogies and polish sausage. Even though there was 4 of us, we were working so hard to eat it all. We manage to eat the main stuff and left the sides untouched. But everything was delicious, very authentic. read more
