    Cabbage rolls...so good!
    Angela D.

What a lovely meal!!! My sis, nephew and I came in on a Tuesday night while we were in town. We knew we wanted the peirogies because we both love them and hadn't had any great ones since Poland last year. When we walked in we were immediately greeted. We were seated and water brought out. We ordered the meat pierogis with bacon and onion, potato and cheese pierogis with onion and cabbage rolls. My nephew got the schnitzel. The pierogis were so lovely! They were fresh and tender, the filling was wonderful!! The cabbage rolls were very good. I am not big on tomatoes or cabbage but love cabbage rolls and these did not disappoint! There was a flavor I did not know but it was wonderful. I would gladly eat any of these items again! The service was great. The woman who served us was attentive and was very sweet. I would eat here again in a heartbeat!

Empty when we got there. Nice guy as server. Food was good we had schnitzel and goulash with potato pancake. Would have liked more substance to the goulash but flavor was good. Schnitzel was flat and crispy but a bit bland.

Came in for a late dinner (7:30 pm) and not a soul in sight. Apprehensive, but feeling adventurous, we entered Kovalsky (particularly because of the yelp reviews XD). Sadly, the food we encountered was pretty average. Side dishes - flavourless and watery were the mashed potatoes and salad. The salad was creamy but tasted like nothing so it felt like I was just adding on useless calories. :( Perogies tasted frozen and watery too (perhaps boiled in a haste). Schnitzel had a nice crisp and wasn't greasy but also lacked distinct flavour. It might have tasted better if we had chose to pay extra to add on sauce. There was only one person running the place from greeting, taking your order, cooking, and cashing us out, and she did everything very well! I hesitate to give 3 stars because although the service was nice, the food made it feel like an overall bland experience so it's more like a 2.5 for me (wish we can do .5 on yelp!).

Food Rating: 4.5* Our next stop in our Schnitzel Safari was Kovalsky in Etobicoke. We came after 4pm on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only customers besides another table. The restaurant is fairly small with a small bar and a row of tables. I was pleasantly surprised that the decor was not outdated and is fairly nice. The decor is not one of the strongest point in the Schnitzel restaurants that I have visited so far. Street parking is available in front of the restaurant. Service was great and would have been worrisome if it wasn't as we were the only customers. The waitress answered all of our questions and was very prompt with our order and refills of water. We ordered the Schnitzel Dinner for two with Cabbage Rolls, Pierogies, Mashed Potatoes and assorted salads and the Bacon Schnitzel. The Dinner Combo price includes wine but substract $10 if you don't want any. Prices are comparable to other Schnitzel restaurants. Portions size were good. They are not biggest but you won't leave the restaurant hungry. The Schnitzel were delicious. I believe that it was better than Cafe Polonez but not as good as the Country Style Hungarian Restaurant. The meat was tender and lightly breaded just the way I like it. I wish it came with a sauce but I also forgot to ask if they had any. The Cabbage Rolls were excellent too. The Pierogies were okay but it probably has a lot to do with the fact that I'm not into it as much as the other dishes. If you are a fan of Schnitzel as I am, this place is a must stop. #19 of 2019

When my boyfriend and I walked in here at 6:30pm it was surprisingly empty. The server came out as soon as we got in and served us water right away once we were seated. We got the dinner for 2 special ($46) with 2 schnitzels, 2 cabbage rolls, 10 pierogies (we got both meat and potato & cheese ones), 6 scoops of mashed potato, with assorted salads and 1/2 litre of wine. Everything arrived very quickly! The schnitzels were thin and crispy but juicy. Cabbage rolls were flavoured well and the pierogies we so good! I really liked the meat ones. The service was great and it was overall a great experience, definitely recommend this place. Especially for a casual date night!

Dare I say that Kovalsky is the Café Polonez of the West-end? Located 4 blocks east of Royal York, Kovalsky is much smaller restaurant that Polonez. Since they're both Polish restaurants, menus have similar items, but Kovalsky's also has desserts. I *don't* remember Polonez having desserts. I could be wrong though 'cause I haven't been there for at least 2-3mths. Kovalsky's also offers different platter options WITH wine, as per the pic that I took. We ordered: Kopytca (Polish gnocchi/lazy vareniki) w/ Beef Goulash & Salads ($13.99), Breaded Chicken Breast w/ Mashed Potatos & Salads ($12.99), & Potato/Cheese Pierogies ($7.99/8). Everything was really delicious and freshly made! (We initially ordered Veg Cabbage Rolls, but they didn't have any.) The difference between the 2 restaurants was that Kovalsky's was marginally cheaper than Polonez, and food wasn't laden in salt. I found Polonez quite salty the last time I ate there. Salads also tasted freshly made. Service was pleasant and friendly. Very chill and quiet for a Friday evening dinner.

We've always loved Polish food. Cafe Pollonez is a little too much of a commute though when the craving hits. So imagine our surprise (and absolute delight) when we discovered this little restaurant less than 10 minutes away! Food: glorious. From the pierogis to the schnitzels to the cabbage rolls to the sausages - everything we've tried so far have been excellent. We want to go everyday so we can order each item on the menu! Service: warm and friendly. There's just always this one lady who does service when we're there (yes I am ashamed her name escapes me) but whether it's lunch or 6pm, she's sweet and patient and very nice. There is a little wait if they're full but nothing out of the ordinary. Their food is worth waiting for! Ambience: surprisingly, lovely. Because of where it's located, you'd expect this place to be a dive. But it is everything but. Today there are fresh tulips on the tables and there was even a small wedding party celebrating there! Price: today we paid almost $60 for two (including tip and a couple of beers). Not bad but also not cheap. I knocked a star off because of this (and parking is street - pet peeve!) If you love Polish food or have never tried it and want to fall in love, just go already!

Service/environment left me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. We came on a Monday evening, and during our 1.5hr stay, we were the only customers. The one waitress working didn't greet us, smile, say thank you, awkwardly approached us and left me feeling as if we weren't supposed to be there. During the time we were eating, she sat behind the bar and seemed miserable to be there. The restaurant was cold and turned off the lights to the basement where the washrooms were, it seemed as if they were trying to save on the energy costs regardless of the modern decor. Food was pleasant but I would not return here due to the ambiance.

The pierogi were the highlight for me. They're flatter than the dumplings I'm used to, and I was surprised by how potato-forward they were. We tried the potato and cheese as well as the potato and onion, and personally I thought the potato and onion had more flavor. We also tried the sausage and mushroom version, which was good too, but the potato fillings were definitely the more memorable ones. I would not recommend ordering 6 or 12 pierogi for one person unless you are very hungry, because it is a lot and you only get one flavor. The better choice is probably one of the larger combo plates, which gives you 3 pierogi plus a few classic sides and mains. The sampler-style plate was actually a great way to try more of the menu. It came with pierogi, hunter's stew, schnitzel, pickled vegetables, and condiments, and it was more than enough for one person. The hunter's stew had a strong sauerkraut flavor, and the schnitzel was thin, crispy, not too greasy, and very satisfying. We also ordered the cabbage rolls, which came in a big portion with tomato sauce. They were decent, but for me the filling was a little mild and the portion felt too large. We tried a Polish beer as well, though honestly I could not tell much of a difference. Overall, this is a family-run restaurant with a simple, homey atmosphere rather than a fancy one, but it is clearly popular for a reason. The food is hearty, comforting, and worth trying, especially if you want a casual place to explore Polish cuisine.

Street parking was reasonably easy to find. We were seated way back in the restaurant and the seating was a little uncomfortable as our table was set up right next to the bar (but way too close to the bar, because our table was long) and other patrons had to constantly shimmy through a small gap between our table and the bar to get to the washrooms downstairs. Not great. We ordered a family style meals to share (combo for 2 and a combo for 4) and the amount of food that came out was probably enough to feed 10 very hungry adults. Definitely do not indulge on the bread basket that comes before the meal, because you will need to save room for the main event. The massive platters came loaded with pierogies, 2 different types of cabbage rolls (my favs!), schnitzels, and various condiments (?) of cooked beets, carrots, cabbages...etc. We were first served 1 different soups; white borscht and beet soup and both were tasty. The meat dumplings in the beet soup balanced out the sweetness of the broth and it worked well. I personally preferred the white borscht which was perfectly sour and a slightly over-powering sausage taste. The refreshing cucumber salad with dill in sour cream was a great accompaniment to somewhat heavy tasting meal. The hunters stew was a hearty bowl of tender morsels of meat, potato dumplings in a well balanced tomato based sauce. Although most of our food was great, we found the cabbage rolls (the traditional tomato version) and the schnitzels too dry. And along with the issue of having to deal with people constantly brushing by, I am taking away 2 stars. I may revisit Cafe Polonez if I'm back in the area, but not in a huge rush either.

The restaurant is small, but vast enough that you won't feel squashed. The "buffet" is situated to the side, with menu items framed behind it on mounted shelves and a mural painted next to the shelves. You tell them what you want and they scoop it for you. A TV plays in the very back and the drink cooler sits across from the buffet as well. We ordered the following: Cabbage rolls combo with buckwheat and cabbage on the side. It was basically stuffed cabbage. Hubs & daughter thought this was good, but it was no big deal. It was ok. Mushrooms and cabbage pierogi and cheese and potatoes pierogi - Overall these were good but we've had better. Hubs only had the mushrooms and cabbage pierogi and he said that he enjoyed this better than the entrees. Somehow, he didn't get to try the cheese and potatoes pierogi. Schnitzel with green beans and potato pancake- Daughter liked the schnitzel and thought that the sides were ok. Hubs thought the schnitzel and the potato pancakes could've used a little more crisp and that it should be fried a little bit longer. Taste wise was ok. The string beans were overcooked and reminded him of school cafeteria. He always wanted to try it but felt disappointed. Tripe soup - We over got to eat this while there, so Hubs had it a few days later. He said that this was pretty good. It was beefy and the tripe was nice and soft. This was one of the better tripes he's had in his lifetime. Daughter is diabetic and wanted diet soda but they didn't have any, so she ended up getting water. The restaurant was cute but it was cold. All the patrons were wearing coats. Place could use some heat. Service was friendly and quick, though. Glad we got to try it, though.

The dough is handmade, thick and chewy, which is my preference. We tried all four savory pierogies and the meat pierogi was my favorite, and potato/cheese was my second favorite. The dumpling skins absorbed the flavor of the fillings and were very savory, not just floury. On the other hand, the dessert blueberry dumpling skins seemed a little thinner and did not absorb any filling flavor, so were a little plain. You should put them whole into your mouth or else you will lose a lot of the berry juice! My partner really liked the tomato sauce on the cabbage rolls and said those rolls were some of the best he's had. I thought they were tender and standard, good. The mustard was slightly sweet and I liked it a lot. The sour cream was thick and tangy, perfect for the pierogies. The sauerkraut was good, though I personally prefer a slightly sweet and less tangy sauerkraut. And the kielbasa was also standard but good. I really liked my mocha, which tasted like how I think mochas should be made: more of a hot chocolate with some coffee added to it. We also tried a prune or date paczki. It was good as a thick glazed donut, though there was hardly any filling. Would definitely come back for savory pierogies!

Although I'm typically not a fan of sauerkraut due to the tartness from the pickling, this one was not sour at all and was quite good. Similarly, I usually find cabbage rolls just okay but had to try this one due to the reviews. Hastings has changed my view of cabbage rolls with the spices and herbs in the meat, along with the tangy sauce. I couldn't stop eating it.
