The Owner came to greet us which was lovely. I cannot think of anything but the word spectacular about the desserts. Our group tried a chestnut puree, a puncs torte (rum cake) and an apple strudel and they were definitely homemade and brought us back to how our parents baked when we were growing up as my Dad was an award-winning baker with his lovely tortes and other baked goods. There are vegetarian and vegan options - you just need to let your Server know about your requirements. Please make it a point to go to this restaurant and they will make you feel as though you have come home for a wonderful meal. The person who I assume does some of the baking, Annamaria Torok, also offers weekend "workshops" at the restaurant for those interested. Her classes as for baked goods as well as main courses. It's my first time coming down here and I've heard plenty of positive things from my buddies, and they certainly lived up to my expectation! I got a Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich and my friend got A Wiener Schnitzel Sandwich! The ambience of the place is like we got transported to Budapest, plenty of culture and provides a nice, homey feel. Married to a Hungarian guy, we are always in the market for an authentic Hungarian meal. Since the closure of two of our usual places, we decided to try Budapest Restaurant for the first time, over Easter with the family. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could but rounded up. For the most part, most of the popular common dishes was pretty well done. This includes the wooden platter that included a schnitzel, sausage, cabbage roll, cucumber salad, beet salad, nokedly (dumplings), and potatoes. The cabbage rolls could have been more tender, but the flavour was very good. Schnitzel is pretty typical.....and we really enjoyed the goulash and deep fried mushrooms. The restaurant has expanded and there are many more tables. The whole place use some updating and washrooms are alright..... A nice spot to visit! read more

The one item that was not as good was the porkchop which was I found fairly dry so definitely not something I would order on its own. We also got to try a few pieces of the "dumplings" which the waitress brought us a sample of. In case anyone is interested in knowing the dumplings look kind of like pasta and had a nice chewy texture which I thought was pretty good. Service here was great. The waitresses were super friendly and helpful in helping us decide what to order. As mentioned one of the waitresses even brought us a sample of the dumplings when I asked what they were when we were ordering. It took me by complete surprise but I was really grateful that she did. The staff were also very conversational so it felt very comfortable being in the restaurant. The space is large, bright and clean. In the summer there is seating outdoors but the indoor seating area is spacious as well. The decor is definitely interesting with many plants and different types of what I assume are Hungarian decorations along the walls. There are many things to like about the place: the food, the theming, and the service. We wanted to sample many dishes that are close to authentic as possible, so we ended up ordering the Budapest-platter ($44.95) for two. In the platter, you get 2 sides, a porkchop, 2 slices of Debreceni sausages, 2 types of Schnitzel, and a cabbage roll. There was a good variety of food present in the platter as well as very generous portions. It was listed as good for 2 people, but I believe it can be spread out to even accommodate 3 people. There was a good amount of thought put into the interior's theming. Laminated pictures of sights and attractions of Budapest, Hungary were present at the table to give a good perspective and insight into Hungarian culture. Ordered the chicken schnitzel sandwich with all the fixins, ie tomato, fried onion, mayo lettuce. Loved the kinda chewy bun but omg, the chicken was literally pounded down to nothing. Some bites had the crunchy coating and absolutely no chicken. Found the whole thing rather bland. Ordered the home fries with it which were pretty much square fries. Not bad but not home fries. Hubby had the pork paprikash. Found it boring. Asked for hot sauce to perk it up but hated the sweet tasting hot sauce. Had it with rice which had some frozen peas and carrots mixed in. We've ordered in from this place a few times, and every single time it's been very tasty. This time, finally got to come inside and try their dinner menu. First of all, the food comes out so quick! Barely have to ever wait for your food. We tried the cabbage roll. It was juicy and tasty. I recommend getting bread with it for all the juicy goodness. The pierogis are a must have. I can easily get two servings for myself. It comes with coleslaw, and sausage (and ofcourse the sour cream as well). We also got a greek salad and a Parisian chicken shnitzel. First, let me say that the waiting staff was very understanding and accommodating. At first, we sat outside at one of the sidewalk tables with an umbrella in the middle of each table. We had the cherry soup, chicken liver soup and chicken noodle soup. The cherry soup was our first. It was a cream based with whole cherries in it. We have never had any soup with cherries before. It was different. None of us at the table dislike it. For me, anything that has cherries will remind me of Tylenol cherry flavored cough syrup as I work with kids. The chicken liver soup was very good. It was not what I thought. I was expecting whole livers and pieces of chicken. It was chicken liver mixed into the dough. So it was chicken liver dumplings in soup. Yum! The chicken noodle soup is chicken noodle soup(no matter who makes it). We had the Hungarian Platter for two. We chose the dumpling and cole slaw for our side dishes. The dumpling was very good. The cole slaw was good. It is vinegar based. The platter came with a cabbage roll. Very good! The Platter is compiled of a Wiener schnitzel, a huge Parisian schnitzel, two pork chops and pieces of baked potatoes as a base. Someone in our party chose the fish and chips. It was alright. My family & I wanted to try as much as possible so we shared the Budapest Platter (for 2), Chicken Paprikash, Cucumber salad and some desserts. -The Budapest Platter is definitely a tower of deep-fried porky glory. What I enjoyed the most was the juicy pork chop, cabbage rolls, pickled beets, mashed potato side (had a sour/dill flavour), and the Parisian schnitzel (nicely fried batter coating). Overall, it wasn't the best schnitzels we ever had, since the breading layer separated from the pork easily. -The Chicken Paprikash was DELICIOUS. The meat was fall off the bone and smothered with a creamy paprika sauce. I was surprised that Hungarian dumplings were like gnocchi, but with a pasta-like chew to it. I recommend using the COMPLIMENTARY sour dough bread to scoop up the delicious sauce. -The $3 pickled cucumber salad was really refreshing to have with all the fried/heavier entrees. For dessert, we tried their Russian Cream Cake and Somloi Galuska. Seems like their desserts often involve rum-soaked raisins (although I didn't really taste the alcohol). My favourite was the Somloi Galuska trifle that had layers of sponge cake, whipped cream, & chocolate sauce. Wow, this was a great surprise. I had heard about this place opening on the Danforth and feared it would be lost in the Greektown melange of eateries. When I looked closer and saw the address was East of Woodbine my heart skipped a beat. Was it possible that there was a new coomfort food option that had the potential to offer good food at good prices? Well I ordered a traditional Schnitzel with Rice, with a Cucumber Salad, and a piece of "Homemade Apple Strudel". I chose to pickup the order and save myself $10.00 in fees, and made sure to tip the staff directly. I was not disappointed! The schnitzel was crispy and tender; cooked perfectly and served with fluffy rice. The cucumber salad added a nice amount of acidity to to the dish, and I wish there was more of what I am guessing was a beet salad garnish. And don't worry about portion size, I'm not a blogger, and only took a picture of the dish becasue I was amazed at how delicious it looked when I got home and opened the bag. But it speaks for itself. The strudel was defintely HOMEMADE which results in a light and flakey crust bursting with an apple filling that was obviously NOT from a can. The fact that the strudel wasn't a goopy mess of overly sweet sugar syrup with a few pieces of apple thrown in was, AMAZING. I ate half of the dessert and didn't have the senstion of needing to rush out to find some insulin to bring my blood sugar down. The other half will do nicely for breakfast with a coffee. If I had one criticism (and it's difficult to lodge one) it would be, that I wish that the menu would have highlighted sauces on the side with some pictures to accompany. Because as I now look back, I think I would have liked to have tried a gravy or two! The food was absolutely incredible and one of the best goulash soups I have had in years. I come from a Hungarian family and have eaten Goulash for decades both here and in Hungary. This is my first experience with Hungarian cuisine and it was delicious! I played it safe (I think) and ordered the Parisian Chicken Schnitzel with dumplings. The portion was quite large, but I was compelled to finish it because a) it was tasty and b) I wasn't going straight home after and didn't want to take a to-go bag around town on the subway with me. Also c) it was tasty! It came with a massive, flat and wide piece of chicken that was lightly battered... and only lightly seasoned which I actually didn't mind, because I didn't expect it to taste like it was from a fried chicken joint. It could have come with mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes or rice as well, but since as mentioned, this was my first experience with Hungarian food, I wanted to try those cute little dumplings and the gravy that comes with it. It did not disappoint! The dumplings were nice and light and chewy, and the gravy did its job. It also came with a lemon wedge (which I squeezed over my massive piece of chicken for a little zip) and some what I believe was pickled purple cabbage that was sweet and a perfect accompaniment to everything else on the plate. I dropped in for a late Thursday lunch (around 1:45pm). Surprisingly, the place had a few customers. The inside looks newly renovated and there's two main dining areas. My server was very genuine and checked up on me several times throughout the meal. Just ask her what's good! I stuck with the Hungarian dishes. The menu is split into appetizers, entrees, breakfast, omelettes, sandwiches, burgers and desserts. Seriously, wished I came with someone else to try more things. All the desserts sounded heavenly. - Bread - you get two slices of bread complimentary. Comes with butter. Nothing to write home about. - Beet salad ($3.00) - a side bowl of fresh, sweet shredded beets. Not to mention more than enough for one person. - Wiener schnitzel ($15.95) - traditionally breaded pork cutlet, fried golden. It comes with a choice of rice, home fries, dumplings or mashed potatoes; I went with the dumplings. Fantastic! It also came with pickled cabbage. The schnitzel was hammered to a perfect, lean consistency. Breading was spot on; crunchy but pleasantly light. The piece was massive but somehow I ate it all! If you're looking for a taste of the old country, you'll be hard-pressed to do better in Toronto (or, frankly, Southern Ontario and a good part of NY state) than Budapest Restaurant. The ambiance is... exactly what it needs to be for the type of spot it is. Service, very warm and accommodating. But the real star of the show; the food! Having visited Hungary on several occasions, with a mother from neighbouring Slovakia (whose cuisine is quite similar to Hungarian), and with a great appetite for Hungarian food, I can honestly say that Budapest is churning out some of the very best representations of the countries beloved national dishes and delicacies. I seriously cannot recommend one dish over another, as they're all fantastic, but my usual go-to's are the goulash soup (the best, most realistic "back home" style I've had anywhere outside of Eastern Europe), the cordon bleu with their awesome mashed potatoes, the hortobagyi palacsinta, the langos with cheese, and of course the somloi galuska, and really so, so, so, much more. The red glow of this restaurant is a beacon you should follow for a hearty meal of Hungarian comfort food. The inside is small but cosy, with only two lines of tables against the two walls. On a Thursday night, there were two larger groups tucking into goulash and cabbages rolls. I imagine this place gets busy of the weekends. The service is warm and friendly, happy to explain anything or provide recommendations. We split a budapest platter for two, pork paprikash, and a somloi galuska for dessert between the three of us. The budapest platter starts with a large cabbage roll, generously stuffed with meat and doused with a light broth. It was one of the best cabbage rolls I've encountered. The platter itself makes an entrance to the table. Two Debreceni sausages perched on top of a Parisian schnitzel, laying on top of a larger Wiener schnitzel, balanced on top of a port chop, resting of a bed of potatoes with a cup of beet salad and rice on each side. It's like a mini mountain with two knives stabbed through to keep it from toppling over. The presentation is impressive. My favourite from this hill of meat is the Parisian schnitzel with a bite of the beet salad. The batter is lighter and less dense but the pork is still moist. The pork paprikash came with dumplings and a creamy sauce that mixed together perfectly. A great hearty meal even on it's own. The somloi galuska is a their version of a trifle with prominent notes of orange, raisins and plenty of whipped cream on top. The food here is mostly breaded, reheated, deep-fried, loaded with starches and salt, premade, and lacking vegetables. Not your grandma's kitchen. The Wiener Schnitzel had some decent meat in it and was chewy. The home fries are deep fried as well. The Chicken Paprikash arrived cold in the middle, the glutinous sauce quite salty. We mostly had to rely on vegetable side orders, and one guest said that the vegetable salad on her plate tasted old. Adding several side orders jacks up the cost, but is necessary for a complete meal. They failed to bring us rye bread that was brought to other tables. Service was a bit absent and I had to go indoors as few times to flag some assistance. I really wonder what servers think their job is. The Hungarian desserts are ok, The custard square was a bit meagre on the custard layer with a fluffy layer of either whip cream or Cool Whip on it. You might prefer a big chunk of custard for the price. Pastry had a nice flake. The Dobos torte was ok but could have arrived frozen from any factory bakery. Far from homemade taste. Of the two the Custard was far less sugary. But it's a nice streetside patio and beer hall vibe to hang out. That's the value. Expensive and subpar Euro food c. On Kingston Road alone, we've sadly seen the closing of three establishments - Corvina Restaurant showcasing plates of Chicken Paprikas and Transylvania Cabbage, Cordon Bleu Schnitzel at the Gourmet Schnitzel House and the Cozy Hungarian's 'House Favorite' Hungarian Goulash along with the closing of the Podkowwa Polish Restaurant on Victoria Park Avenue where you could get a dinner entrée featuring four uniquely different preparations of Cabbage! During the COVID Pandemic, the availability of Hungarian Goulash, Chicken Paprikash, Schnitzel and proverbial Cabbage Rolls took another direct hit with the closing of the Budapest Restaurant on Gerrard Street. Thankfully I have found a place for such gastronomic experience with the rising phoenix.... Budapest Hungarian Restaurant at 2183 Danforth Avenue, Toronto, ON, M4C 1K4. I can once again feast on Hungarian Goulash, Chicken Paprikash, Schnitzel & Gourmet Cabbage Rolls! There's also a delightful twist on a grand menu of Eastern European Desserts.
