A sweet little gem in Ferndale. It all started in a camper out and about in Ferndale. Great place to relax, work and catch up with friends. Plenty of room to spread out and have privacy if you would like. 3 levels to inspire you. The atrium is full of light and greenery. Upstairs has large tables and comfy chairs. Mid way you can order your coffee/tea and a snack. We had the iced coffee and a turkey and cheese croissant with horseradish( very subtle). Want to go back for the traverse city cherry tea. At this point, I'm a solid "wait and see." The coffee shop is adorable, and the place has a good vibe. My husband and I both ordered cherry iced tea. However, what we got was barely drinkable. There was WAY too much cherry juice concentrate in the tea, so what we received wasn't so much cherry iced tea as cherry juice concentrate with a hint of tea. Drifter has great ambiance. They have a cute garden, tons of outdoor seating, yummy local pastries (vegan options too!) and some of the best iced coffee around Ferndale. I've been coming here a lot more now that the weather is nicer and the wait time is just insane. For a coffee and a pastry I waited 30 minutes, the weekend before I waited 45 for three drinks. So awesome! My sister and I were looking to go to the beach but it ended up being overcast, so we decided to come to Drifter!! I'd been following them on Instagram for so long, so I was super excited! The overall atmosphere is so awesome. Really bright and colorful, and the staff is awesome. The person who helped us (I wish we grabbed their name) was super personable. My sister and I just got drinks, though their treats looked great. My sister got an iced coffee with sweetener, which she loved. I got the Risa Sunset, which is their traverse city cherry tea with oat milk and sweetener, iced, and it was awesome. Super perfect for summer!! Bonus points: they were playing the My Favorite Murder podcast on the speakers!! I'm in love. Traveling coffee peddlers turned brick & mortar, I instantly fell in love with the ambience of the coffee shop and once I sipped my iced chai, things were sealed. It's a small coffee shop tucked away in the Ferndale area, decently far away from Woodward such that there are no issues finding parking and one can find a little oasis in the hustle of it all. They have two main rooms - the downstairs which is meant to be chattier and the upstairs which is meant to be more of a study area. I came on a weekday afternoon and it was not crowded at all. The downstairs is surrounded by windows, pouring in natural light and fresh air, making my casual reading session absolutely divine. I started off with an iced chai, but ended up staying for so long enjoying my time that I also ended up getting an iced coffee and a banana chocolate chip muffin. I opted for oat milk in my chai (due to my lactose intolerance) and it had a delicious tangy, acidic spice that balanced well with the oat milk and the sweetener. The iced coffee also had a similar brightness with an awesome nuttiness. I similarly enjoyed sipping on it as I kept up with my reading. Lastly, the muffin. I'm a hobbyist baker and make my fair share of banana bread, and this muffin killed it. It was moist, full of banana flavor and not TOO sweet that the chocolate chips made it unpalatable. In short, this place is a winner to me. I love supporting local places and can't wait to come back and soak up more light and taste more of the goodness of their food and drink. read more

I never would have found this place if a friend hadn't tipped me off! So lovely, and I'll be back (hopefully soon). I had a little trouble finding it because of the construction - check out the photos of the exterior before you go to make it easier :) the outdoor seating is charming and cozy. I didn't go inside and just used the walk-up window. The iced latte with vanilla bean syrup was fantastic and my friend also swears by their iced chai latte. I wanted to try their scones but they were out - which I'll take as a good sign. The mixed berry bar I got instead was excellent - crust had the perfect amount of moistness without being soggy and the berry flavor was great for summer. I love this coffee shop. The people working there are friendly and welcoming. I've seen some reviews saying the opposite; However, just because they are not squealing with joy like a Starbucks worker does not mean they are not friendly! I enjoy the calm vibes. Their decaf espresso is the best I've ever had. The prices are very reasonable and comparable to anywhere else you'd go. I have been a Drifter fan since they started their pop ups in their cute (seriously the cutest) trailer a couple years ago and I am so so happy that they have been able to open up a permanent space!! They have done such a great job with this space and truly made it unique and charming and just overall comfortable! Their coffee is delectable and they serve lots of random treats! I admit that I am fond of independent coffee shops that take pride in their products and service, and Drifter is a great example of this. Their Ferndale location is off the beaten path, but offers a great destination for quality coffee and tea, with tasty snacks. There are tables to pull out your laptop or tablet, and seating just to chill and chat with friends. The other key to a quality coffee shop IMO, is friendly service and the owner/ workers are very welcoming and eager to help your choices. The only item I found lacking compared to other independent shops is a selection of beans and or brewing methods. That said, their offerings are excellent for my tastes, but it might be nice to offer choices that vary in intensity and flavor. Bottom line.... great coffee, comfy location, friendly service, and yummy snacks, I'll be looking for excuses to visit often! read more

Since then, I've been in love with their commitment​ to the ​community and offering yummy and locally sourced products. The staff is great; they're friendly, dedicated, and passionate. I was SO excited when I heard they were opening a storefront. And let me tell you, this place is ADORABLE. There are​ lots of cozy places to hang out, and tons of personal little touches. I saw Drifter when driving home from work recently and it looked so quaint and cute! Today my boyfriend and I finally made time to stop in. The person taking orders at the walk-up window was SO kind and pleasant! We got an iced chai with macadamia milk, lavender lemonade, traverse city cherry Arnold Palmer, and a ham croissant. Everything was delicious and super fresh. We sat briefly to eat the croissant while it was still warm-- their little patio is so cute and cozy. This coffee shop is so quirky! I love the interior! Even better though, the coffee is always smooth and the staff is always super friendly. I usually walk to the shop with my dog because it is so close to my house. On a particularly cold day when I was tying my dog outside to go in and order, one of the gals said I could bring him in briefly to order. This place is definitely a neighborhood favorite! I have never met anyone who went to Drifter and did not like it. The place is very small and they don't have that many seatings, but the decor itself is very cute with a chic Boho vibe. I was told they used to have more seatings, but the second floor is now no longer open to the public. In the warmer months, they have cute outdoor spaces available to sit or just take pictures. It's within walking distance to downtown Ferndale, so grabbing a coffee for a walk is an awesome idea too. Their seasonal Spring menu is awesome. I went for the Bee Sting, which is a spice-containing latte. The spice gives a very nice kick at the end of every sip, thus it tastes more refreshing. Some would like it hot, but I prefer mine ice cold. The coffee is P-r-e-t-t-y strong as my weak self got palpitations and mild tremors with just half the medium glass. Nevertheless, it was so good that I finished the whole drink anyway. Also, I think the original was too sweet so I always ask it to be less sweet. Service is kind and quick. This is the sweetest, cutest, women-owned coffee shop! This building has so much character and the attention to detail in decor makes for such a pleasant experience when hanging in there! I went for my first time a few weeks ago and the baristas were so helpful in helping me figure out what I wanted. I started with the cherry tea and it was tart but pleasant & I had an iced latte after (although I don't remember which one but v delicious).
