I stumbled upon Dream Yunnan at the heart of Baldwin street. I'm not too familiar with Yunnan food. From reading about it, it's an amalgamation of Han Chinese and ethnic minorities in Yunnan province in the Southwest of China. The famous crossing-the-bridge noodles originated from Yunnan.
As a noodle lover, I have to order the noodles! The noodles had a balanced savoury taste with a bit of tang and a subtle spicy numbing sensation. It reminded me of Northern Chinese cuisine but not quite. With the server's reco, we picked pork and tofu topping. The silky tofu mixing in with the bits of ground pork into the noodle is a dreamy, comforting combo.
We also had to try the chef's special, pilaf with roasted chicken.
The pilaf came with an unusual combination of ingredients: a mixture of white/black? rice, peanuts, potato salad, noodles, seaweed, salted egg, oranges and spice/seasoning. The server gave us gloves, and we were to mix the ingredients and wrap them with lettuce to enjoy. I don't know if we're doing it right, but we had fun eating it. The flavours were well balanced and were not too salty despite me loading up the seasoning. We finished off with sliced oranges at the end. Highly recommend it for those who want to step out of their comfort zone and try something different. read more
