That's because when you pull into the shopping plaza.....you don't see it. But if you circle around to the right, you'll see it on the side of the strip mall's buildings. And trust me, this spot is definitely worth hunting down to experience a standout breakfast or lunch. We walked in a little before 1:00 yesterday and found a table for two in the back left corner of the dining room, so we had a good view of the entire room. I have to tell ya, the place was packed! Breakaway closes at 3:00 every day except Sunday (2:00), and there were breakfast and lunch menus out, plus a few daily specials. My wife went with a "William's Ham Panini" ($17) with thin sliced ham, bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar and honey mustard on a grilled panini. We both were struck at how much ham was piled onto her sandwich. She had a few choices for a side dish and put her nickel down on potato salad. I went with The JT Salad ($16). The menu says it's been their "best-selling salad 25 years and counting". It was a big portion of mixed greens served with house balsamic dressing, grape tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese, and grilled chunks of teriyaki glazed chicken breast. It was stellar, with plenty of that yummy cheese and chicken. The only sour note with our lunch was a rather steep $4.25 for a glass of iced tea that was half-filled with ice. Still perfect French toast…read more Besides a very boushy Mexican fusion place in Hartford, this is my barometer when it comes to French toast. The overnight French toast is simple but executed flawlessly. Two pieces of bread, soaked till the egg is absorbed into the bread to make a kind of bread pudding. Cooked till creamy and seared well. Doused with the syrup of simmering apples and mushy seasoned apple bits on the bottom. No off flavors, no egg ring, no fake whipped cream, just golden perfection. With jammy fruit. Make this with brown sugar and banana and I would be a very happy man. Never the less, a simple dish executed without error is so rare that I find only a few cooks can pull it off. Sometimes I need the reminder, and this place does it very well. Worth the price and the trek every time

Tried again, still pretty good but need some refinement…read more On my retries of breakfast spots. Went to get a coffee at the cozy coffee spot close by, and decided to give these guys another try. Server was a little over friendly. Not a negative but it does give me pause. I do try to be just another customer when I do my treks, and overeagerness makes it seem like my experience may be over conflated. Then again, the chances of me having clout are minimal. So I ordered my bananas foster French toast and real maple syrup and wait for my food. I get it quickly, then it gets scooped up because they forgot the caramel sauce. Gets re-delivered quickly and I dig in. French toast is done well, no off flavors and bread was properly soaked. Bananas were grilled and jammy, caramel sauce was tossed on bananas and whipped cream was from a can but okay as a garnish. I get the idea of what they were going for, and appreciate the properly warmed fruits and cook of the French toast itself. To me, bananas foster is banana, brown sugar, rum, and butter. The brown sugar makes the caramel and the rum adds a woody, smoky element to the sauce. Butter adds richness and body, enhancing mouthfeel. This dish has the essence of the dish it's named for, but is lacking the flavor punch. My thought: take maple syrup which has that woody taste. Mix butter and brown sugar and boil it to a thick syrup state. Make that a drizzle, and stripe it across the dish with the warmed up banana. Skip the canned whipped cream, or offer fresh whipped cream or a small dish of vanilla ice cream with the drizzle on top as well. You get the flavors of the namesake dish, the tasty bananas and the great French toast. That would make the dish stellar. As of right now, it's pretty good. It's a perfectly fine breakfast spot, does a good French toast and the price is a little high but not extensively so. The only problem I see is there's a lot of fast casual breakfast spots on that stretch of road. They will need to innovate to avoid losing business to the surrounding shops. If they offer superior quality, they may make themselves a mainstay. There's many paths they can take though, this is just one trekking foodie's random ideas

We both decided on the California eggs benny. What a cool idea to put the eggs on shredded home fries instead of those notoriously difficult to cut English muffins. Lazy Fare sure seems to be a worthy successor to the wildly popular Craft Kitchen. We stopped in for a late morning pick-me-up after running some errands in Hartford and Windsor Locks. We each had a beverage -a Chamomile Honey Latte ($7 for a small), a Tiramisu Latte ($7.50 for a large), and we split a blueberry cheesecake pastry ($5.50). Our beverages were very good. I really liked my Tiramisu latte and was surprised to see it was garnished with a small slice of a tiramisu cookie. That was a nice sweet touch.
