The wife and I visited and ate at the Downtown Diner both Saturday and again today, Monday. We live an hour away from Berlin but visit the area often. On our visit with friends on Friday three of us selected the buffet that featured burgers grilled on a Green Egg, which we all agreed were some of the best we had ever had! I am normally pretty conservative at a buffet, but the burger was so good I ended up eating 2! We all loved our service, the facility, the fair value and everything we ate that day! We all rated this experience a solid 5! So the wife and I returned to Berlin on Monday to exchange a couple clothing items that did not fit right, and decided to return to the Downtown Diner to give it another try. I had the Barbecue Brisket Burger & Onion Rings, and the wife a Taco Salad with their homemade dressing (she loved the dressing). Our meals were fantastic! We met the new owners of the restaurant, who are young very nice hard working people who have a desire to operate a facility that produces excellent food at a reasonable cost to the customer. The 4 of us that visited the establishment over the past few days believe that are doing exactly what they are desiring to do! I can't wait to visit on Friday or Saturday again to get owner Dave's burgers off the Green Egg! The food was amazing and not a long time to wait. It's a 50s style dinner in the main area. The rest is additional space with long tables and 4 tops along the walls. Don't sit at the first table by the door in back area. There is a post near the table and for some reason everyone tries to go between it and the table. I was bumped into twice. If you see someone sitting there then go around the other side of the pole. High prices for the food, the food we ordered came with fries so I wonder if that's why the price was high. read more

If they sit you in the first table sit next to the wall because even with someone sitting there they still brushed past me because the pole was there so they would squeeze between me and the pole. Ordered an omelette, with 5 toppings a la carte. It took quite some time to get it, cheddar cheese, mushroom, pepper, sausage, and brisket. I didn't care for the link sausage, and prefer traditional sausage for breakfast. The omelette was great despite my other sausage preference.... Coffee refill wasn't satisfactory, had to repeatedly request refills. My issue with the establishment was one older waitress had the most severe body odor. It was beyond offensive, especially when you're eating. She wasn't my waitress, but simply passing beside my table was nearly more than I could bear. read more

Had to wait 15 minutes to get seated and then an additional hour for our food to come out once we had ordered. Waiting for the food wasn't the biggest frustration, it was the fact they did not let us know there would be a wait. After 45 minutes of waiting, I asked about our order and was told that the wait was normally 45-50 minutes to get food served. Again, we aren't upset there was a wait but we feel like the communication could have been better. Food was good but not amazing and definitely should not have taken 1 hour to make a chicken wrap and two hot dogs. read more

We went there late yesterday evening. Hannah was our waitress who did an EXCELLENT JOB. I'm highly allergic to pork and fish. She was very helpful to suggest safe sides for me. I had a grilled chicken sandwich on sourdough with a side salad. VERY FRESH SALAD, AND DELICIOUS GRILLED CHICKEN! My husband also got the grilled chicken on brioche bun with green beans. While visiting the area we visited this location for lunch. The place was fine from an atmosphere perspective. It reminded me of an old 60's diner in some ways. Ordered a mushroom-swiss burger. My drink did come with some kind of black floaters in the bottom of the drink. Had them swap it out but had them again on the refill. Third time it appeared to be clear. Thought there may have been an offer of something for the problem but no, charged full price. Even had a surcharge for using a credit card, of which I was not warned. May have missed some obscure sign. the food was good once received so the only reason for the 2 was the drink mishap. The server was nice but service was a little slow. 10/28/23 This diner is under new ownership...formerly Plain & Simple Diner. We stopped in for a late lunch. We waited about 35 minutes for a table as they were very busy. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich ($12) which came with one side. I chose onion rings. I skipped the soft drinks ($3.00) as I don't care for Coke products. My food was tasty. Typical diner food with a hometown flair. We were here for a late afternoon lunch. My wife had the chili cheese dog and onion rings and I had a hamburger with Mac n cheese. This is not your McDonalds food by any means. Many soups and salads to choose along with various meats. Special was brisket Mac n cheese which they only had one serving left when we got there, maybe next time. Service was stellar as we were asked multiple times if we needed anything else. Lives up to the name. Nice simple place with a hidden dining room. We ordered a few simple items and all were just as expected. This used to be our favorite place to eat in Berlin but not anymore! The ownership has changed, the menu has changed, the portions have changed and prices have changed and none of it for the better! I am sad because we have so many memories here but I will not be back! I was surprised when I walked in on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and there was no line out the door as usual! Then when we sat down I saw the name had changed to Downtown Diner. I asked the server if the business had changed hands and she confirmed it had! The popular Amish restaurant down the street was very busy. In face all places we went to this particular night had lines to get in and we had tickets to a play at 7. We came here one hour beforehand, were seated immediately and were done eating in time to make it to the play. All food was reasonably priced and very tasty. I don't agree with the reviewer that said this place is surrounded with plenty of earteries. Small retail shops, but not much in the way of lunch/dinner spots. Maybe one or two others. Don't come here looking for Amish food- the name says it all. Plain and Simple. We're talking cheese burgers, fish sammys, chicken fingers and fries. So with that being said, the food is gooood! I had the fish sandwich and fries- 2 nice big pieces of fish. Everyone else in my party loved their food as well. Like I said, it's not Amish food and it's nothing fancy. The place was clean and service friendly. We tasted a couple samples of their ice cream. Tasted great. Service was fast. The bacon cheese burger was fantastic, thick, juicy and fresh ...with real bacon vs the paper thin stuff some places use... It was $0.60 wing day.. wings were cooked to a perfect crisp and coated in a very flavorful (not hot) buffalo style sauce . Great place for a quick lunch read more

Very good! I got the garlic butter chicken wings which were amazing. Upgraded to the breaded mushrooms which I recommend! Hubby got mushroom Swiss burger with fries which he scarfed down.
