Weird but whatever chicken, lettuce, croutons and cesar dressing still felt on brand so I went for it. This is not a cesar salad. It was a salad with balsamic dressing of some kind, toasted bread with the crust cut off and a cold chicken breast. And, it comes with bread but I was told they didn't have rye so I ended up with sourdough that was also not sourdough and the waitperson didn't bring it until I was mostly through eating my refrigerator cold chicken. Just, yikes. Additionally, I still don't know how there was rye for my sister's sandwich but I wasn't allowed to order it with my food. As for her lunch, the pastrami was fine but with a lackluster amount of meat. The French onion soup was the only thing that felt reasonable with quality and price. Despite that, the atmosphere was welcoming, the service was outstanding, and we never felt rushed. The walls were adorned with hand-drawn battlefield crosses and messages honoring the fallen and supporting our service members. As someone who deeply appreciates that commitment, it resonated with me. I struck up a conversation with the bartender and learned that his son is a Marine. His pride in supporting veterans and active-duty service members was evident and appreciated. Sarah, our waitress, was friendly, kind, and attentive despite the late hour. She smiled, laughed with us, and made us feel right at home. Now, the food! The lobster dish was fantastic--perfectly seasoned and served with a delicious sauce. The seafood entrée I ordered was outstanding, and the wedge salad was absolutely top-tier. I love a good wedge salad, and this one exceeded expectations. She did her best, but the service overall lacked warmth, and there was a long wait for our food despite many empty tables. The biggest disappointment was my steak. While the portion size was fine, it was so full of gristle that I left nearly a third of it untouched because it simply wasn't edible. My husband's fish tasted good, but many of the thinner pieces were overcooked and dry. When I mentioned the problem with my steak, the response was simply, "Is there anything we can do for you?" followed by an awkward silence. No apology, no offer to replace it, and no acknowledgment that such a poor cut of meat shouldn't have been served. They don't. They're Midwestern cooks, definitely used to cooking for larger families than the typical Midwestern home cook, but they're using the same recipes and techniques. It's perfectly good Midwestern food, and generally lots of it, but there's nothing special about Amish cooking than any other small-town Midwestern homecooking. There are also a few joints for locals, and they're great, but they aren't fine dining. Tarragon, at the Inn at Honey Run, is the only fine dining option in the entire county. The food at Tarragon is thoughtful, the service professional but friendly, the ambience really great. Beautiful understated decor that reflects the lovely rural setting. Floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over woods and farms below, including homes visible through the woods where you can see people carrying lanterns after dark. Music, mostly light jazz, at just the right level, tables just far enough apart. I would very happily return to this place. This place isn't for everyone. The reviewer who recommended Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen as providing "similar ambiance and food options" just made me laugh. Mrs. Yoder's is great, don't get me wrong -- excellent fried chicken -- but it's a buffet that charges by the pound ($8 bucks a pound last time I checked), so saying it's got similar food and ambiance is just silly. Or recommending you drive 45 minutes to Massillon or Dover when there's a great restaurant right here? They've been having staffing issues since the beginning of the pandemic, but they seem to be trying hard.
