We showed up about 10 minutes before our start time, met our guide Michelle, and looked around the property and gift shop. Michelle led us through the distillery, which is a pretty small operation, teaching us about their distilling process and the history of the company. The tastings were fantastic and it felt like the appropriate number for the 60-70 minutes of the tour. After the tour we got a drink at the bar to try another whisky that wasn't sampled on the tour. All the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and laid back on our Sunday evening visit. They have other events that sound really fun to come back for! I'm glad I heard about and got to try this great little spot.

We had time to go grab a cocktail from the bar prior. Ryan was behind the bar, crafting beverages for folks. My husband chose to have a Sazerac, while I went for an espresso martini. Drinks in hand we headed back to spend time with Forrest, who took us on a brief tour of the facility. He gave us the history of how Stranahan's started. It was interesting to learn that they bottle by hand. We came to our tasting set up. At each couple there were jars with items to smell that would be aromas or tastes we would experience, like rose, leather, tobacco, and cinnamon. There were four tastes paired with caramel, cheese, chocolate and fig. Each pairing brought out different flavors in the whiskey samples. We both had a lovely time and at the end, I had my husband pick a favorite for me to get for him for his birthday. Great experience!

I went searching for a non chain bar or restaurant to support and was shocked to see that Lakewood CO of all places had a local distillery and just had to try it. It honestly exceeded my expectations as I originally planned on coming in for one drink but left after trying 3 because it was so good. My first drink was the Coffee, God and Cigarettes. This drink offered a well-balanced blend of bitter and sweet notes, both light and flavorful. The tobacco finish is present but not overpowering, making for a very enjoyable overall experience. The 2nd drink I got was the old fashioned.... Which was made with both whiskey and rum in it which left me a bit nervous to actually order it. But don't let the rum fool you, this is a classic-tasting delicious Old Fashioned. Ironically, the rum has more traditional whiskey character than their white whiskey (which tastes like scotch). If you like Old Fashioneds, you'll find this version delicious. I finished with the Serrano Cucumber Gimlet. It features a fresh cucumber essence and a well-balanced, subtle heat. A unique and excellent twist on the classic. All the in house spirits were great, Cameron the bartender on shift was able to answer any and all questions I had, the drinks were great and the atmosphere was wonderful. They had a wide variety of choice for their drinks. I believe that they make all of their own alcohol on site. The service was very good, I was impressed by the kindness and knowledge of the drink menu that they had. I tried a few items off the menu. I had the chips and salsa which were very good. I believe the chips and salsa were made by the food truck that is outside. The Mac and cheese was good but a little overwhelming with the thickness and amount of cheese sauce put on it. The chicken wings were very good, well cooked with great crisp on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. My favorite item were the sliders though. Both styles were really good and for $5 each it is a great value. I enjoyed my experience at Rocket Spirits and will be back to try more of their food and drinks.

I emailed Don about scheduling the tour, and he was super flexible, as well as responsive. We learned so much on the tour about how the operations work. I love their commitment to staying as local as possible. Don is obviously very passionate and super knowledgeable. Plus the drinks! I had an old fashioned, which really let their bourbon shine. They also have mocktails, so that was a nice option for our DDs. The tasting room is small but very comfortably appointed, and we loved the local art displayed. The atmosphere at this distillery is a great mix of history, craft, innovation and true love for their business. During the tour we learned about their two distillery cats, who keep the grains safe from hungry little mice, who coincidentally are named after bootleggers :) We also learned about the ghost of a little girl, which the call Molly, and about the many business ventures and owners of this historic cabin. We learned that the stained glass are very special as there is no cross lead structure keeping the glass together, we learned about the Swedish blacksmith who furnished the huge fireplace (one of the largest in CO) with it's horseshoe ornamental hooks and other ironwork. We learned about the bomb shelter in the back, as well as proper procedures and temps needed to create the various proofs they produce here. Black Bear is the only distillery in the nation who has been able to obtain permission from Ireland to produce Irish Style Whisky abroad. They are just a great group of people, with a passion for spirits, that want to share their love and knowledge with the world. Go see them if you have a chance. New businesses are what breeds new life into small old towns like Green Mountain Falls. Take a trip up the pass, and go see this place. Better yet, get a map stamped and embark into a Colorado-wide distillery road trip. You won't be disappointed.
