We were there 5PM June 3. The service was good and the food excellent and original. A very different change of pace. All was good until the restaurant started filling up. Although most people like a noisy place, the four of us were shouting to hear each other at the end. We did not and are sorry it is so noisy, but then no one place is for everybody. Have stopped for early lunch there twice now in the past 2 weeks and it's just OK... They try to give you an upscale dining "experience". The food is good-probably better if you really like gorgonzola, the wait staff is fine, polite, but not really overly helpful. The place is clean and the parking lot seems to be full, but I'm really not that impressed with the food for the price. It's OK. And, it's an easy stop if you're playing golf at Downriver and want to stop somewhere other than the clubhouse. I have been to Downriver grill multiple times, and will say the food and service are declining rapidly. Tonight I had the steak wrap and soup, both served at a almost luke warm temperature. The waitress was not very attentive, so we quickly ate and left. I really do not think enough attention is given to favor, presentation, or service. I am surprised they are still in business. Took my parents there for lunch -- tried the DRG burger. I've had better burgers @ McDonalds. The meat was obviously from some frozen carton; dry & tasteless -- I expected for the price a fresh meat burger. I ordered the burger rare and the first time they brought it out it was well-done. I sent it back and they brought the burger again. This time the burger was verging on raw, with some of the inside being cold to the touch. I hope I don't get food poisoning. They gave us a refund for the burger and all of us 3$ off coupons. This was only the second time I've had food from DG and I think it will be the last. The restaurant is nice, a relaxed atmosphere and good service. But the food is seriously less than impressive. I had the french dip sandwich with shrimp bisque. Everything was just really bland. I paid an extra $2.50 to sub the bisque instead of french fries or salad. It would have nice to see a few pieces of shrimp in it. Honestly, the lobster bisque at Red Lobster is ten times better. The meat on the french dip tasted completely unseasoned and is served on sourdough bread. The jus had a bit of a sour flavor, possibly from wine? The two flavors together were not good. I ended up just kind of picking out the meat and leaving the rest. I should have just gotten a french dip at Quiznos, it would have been half the price. On another note, they are a partner restaurant to The Flying Goat, which is just across the street, the food there is fabulous. If you're in the area, and trying to decide between the two, definitely go for The Flying Goat. read more

Wow, it really is amazing to me how good the Flying Goat is, and how very average downriver grill was. After having a decent lunch there once, I urged some friends to go out to dinner. We were seated fine and overall the atmosphere is nice. They have actually a pretty decent wine list with strangely some ok bottles, all the way to amazing Walla Walla wines. We decided to go for one of the amazing bottles, but was faced with the fact that the server seemed to be both fairly clueless about the wine as well as when we asked for a decanter. If you are going to serve $150 of cab from Walla Walla, you should expect to have a filter and decanter available. Anyhow, we ordered the fries because they seem to be popular and assorted other dinner items. Sadly, the food was average Spokane fair. Unfortunately, the servers were clearing plates and you weren't even done with your meal. I think the service and the food was lacking. The goat is so much better in all aspects. You would be better off buying some good wine and walking across the street for a pizza. I am shocked that people said the food was amazing here....really shocked. Alas, worth a try, but I don't think we will be back. read more

When DRG first opened in my neighborhood I had a few rocky experiences there, mainly with service. (Got crossed from the wait list, although we were waiting in the bar.) Disclaimer: I'm a food snob. I've had the pleasure of eating great food in many places...So maybe this is just what Spokane food is like. I mean, there must be very low expectations here and zero competition. So maybe, you'll like the place. Who knows? I just wouldn't recommend it. Ever. Sadly. I picked this place because their whole focus is "Fresh, Seasonal, Local". It says this above their kitchen window! It was none of those things in my experience. You can't just use buzzwords and expect everyone to be fooled. Sorry, but that's what seems to be the case. Both steaks we ordered (the two on the menu)were extremely tough(like could barely cut or chew them without choking) oddly cut, under seasoned(possibly not salted at all, like the garnish would make up for it?) seemed to be cooked from frozen, or covered while cooking, not a real sear to be seen or tasted, not garnished with a true version of what was listed on the menu-meaning the onions were not caramelized, but sauteed, their was no gorgonzola... etc. Pretty inedible, really. The veggies were not seasonal. It was some simple sauteed summer squash. Key word being Summer. It's February.I was expecting(because seasonal) kale, brussels or even a winter squash.The gratin was shredded (!)potatoes with some cheese, served fairly bland and luke warm. Not a great textural experience either. These were $12.95 plate and $9.95 plate meals. Not a $19 plate and a $24 plate. Don't get me wrong-I wouldn't like it even at that price. Just making a point. Maybe it was an off night or a bad dish choice(though everything about BOTH kinda sucked, so...)but, really, if you can't cook steak properly or know how to cut and season it, why bother having it on the menu? If you can't deliver quality at that price point, try something else! Maybe the Osso Bucco is better. I don't care to find out. Also, pretty small(which is usually a good sign when it's carefully curated) wine list but not impressive. The excuse can't just be because it's locally focused-there's stuff from Argentina and California and nothing else is local most likely. And it can't be because of the price point, because I know you can get great wine for a moderate price if you know your stuff. It's reasonably priced-for good food, but this was not good food. Seems like they just didn't care. Not local. Not seasonal, not fresh. Very disappointed. There's a million places in the world that can pull off a fantastic meal for anywhere from $13 to $25. Five stars because at Easter brunch I ordered something from the menu and stated that I have Celiac Disease and asked if it could be made gluten free. The server checked and said that it could. And, then we waited and waited for our food. The server began to apologize because the reason for the wait was that they were taking extra care to not cross-contaminate my meal. She even offered to refresh my Mimosa for free! My friends and I enjoyed a relaxing conversation, the delicious meal arrived, I ate without issues and when the bill came they had given me the Mimosa (and refill) for free because of the wait! Went to this place because I was in search for cronuts and I was desperately wanting some . Was delighted to see that they had cronuts on the menu so I drove to this place! Walking in, we were not greeted right away. There were only 3/4 tables being served at the time with around 4 servers walking around. After a few minutes, a young lady came and asked if we were helped yet. Then she sat is a table and gave us menus then left. After 5 minutes, no one came to ask us what we wanted to drink. I looked around to see if anyone noticed us. There still wasn't much business yet and there were workers and servers walking around us. I eventually waved someone down and asked if we could get some water. Later on, after 10 mins, a guy came up to us and said he was our server. He took our orders and left us. After about 40 minutes , we finally got our orders. We ordered cronuts, a salad wrap, and some soup. Don't know why it took 40 mins but I was excited on getting cronuts so I didn't mind as much. After we got our orders, the server went off somewhere else. During our whole time eating , or waiting, our server did not come ask if we were alright , or come to check on us. We didn't get refills on water at all and had an empty cup for the whole time . I had to drink my husbands water. The soup was super salty so I was thirsty. It was like our server just disappeared. Even after we were done with our meal, we were waiting at least 15 minutes for our check. Until I realized no one was coming , I waved down another server. Finally got the check and left. The only thing I'd say was good about the place are the cronuts we had. Other than that, I wouldn't come back to this place because service was pretty much non-existent. I made reservations for my mom's 80th birthday. When we walked in we were 10 minutes early and they seemed confused and had to set up a table. There were 10 of us in the party and when we went to sit at our table, the hostess asked me if my phone number was xxx-xxx3. I told her no it had a 7 on the end. She told me that our reservation was the previous night. I called a couple of weeks before to make the reservation, the person who took it repeated it back to me and said the wrong phone no. I corrected her and thought it was all good. I don't think that I would mess up on my mom's 80th birthday. No one thought the service was great and the food was expensive and nothing to write home about. My husband and I came here a few years ago and loved it. The menu is now more of a pub style menu. We were all so disappointed because we wanted it to be special. They are off our list of restaurants to frequent. read more

The North side solution to fine dining with great prices. Downriver grill has been around for about four years and does a great job of preparing very good food for a competitive price. For starters, the calamari is pretty good (it includes red pepper flakes but there is not alot of bite) and the Northwest cheese sampler is a great idea that few other restaurants seem to be serving. For entrees, the seared Yellow Fin Tuna with avocado and mango salsa is excellent and fresh enough to trust it to be served rare. The Pork Osso Buco is cooked perfectly with the meat practically falling from the bone. There are also more pedestrian menu items like sandwiches and burgers to accommodate those who are less adventurous. The atmosphere is very nice while not being intimidating. The wine list is limited and very reasonably priced. There is a large bar with comfortable bar seating if the dining room is packed. The staff tries hard and the owners seem to be involved in day to day operations. There can be a wait which sometimes results in people saying bad things about the place. As Spokanites, we are not used to waiting for a restaurant and some people seem to get almost offended if they cant be seated immediately. Don't listen to those people.....you know who they are. Downriver is definitely worth a visit even if you live downtown or on the south hill. In summary, Downriver is very good, well priced and comfortable. read more

The waiter stated they would give us dessert to make up for the long wait, so we each ordered a dessert. The bill came and they only gave us credit for one dessert. 5 stars does not even begin to cover this place. To begin with, our server Karla was AMAZING. We had reservations outside and it was a little chilly when we sat down, and she moved us inside without any fuss. She was incredibly knowledgable about all the menu items and how to pair foods, and was more than willing to make adjustments to our order as we asked (we were kind of being a pain). She was present without being overbearing and was very attentive to our needs. So service is an absolute 5 stars no questions asked. Now for the food... So so so delicious and fresh. We started with the green garbanzo bean hummus which was out of this world. There was SO much flavor in it. (We came back two nights later and got 3 orders of it to go. It was that good). For our entrees, I got chicken Marsala, my mom got their panzanella salad, and my boyfriend got the burger with the Cambozola cheese fondue, portobello, and arugula on it. Hats off to the chef, who makes creative innovations with each of his menu items, and does it perfectly. The food is so fresh, delicious, and perfectly presented. My mom suggested going to dinner at Downriver Grill because she had gone recently and really enjoyed it- she had the Boulevard cocktail, dungeoness crab and artichoke dip and shrimp bisque. I, however, was not impressed at all. I ordered the french dip. I have never had a french dip on Texas Toast and it was terrible- the bread was mushy and kept falling apart. The roast beef had almost a sweet flavor to it and, though the menu said that it has horseradish on it, there was none. I asked for a side of it and it wasn't great either- the horseradish was cut with too much sour cream and had dark chunks of something in it. We ordered creme brulee for dessert, it also was very lackluster. The top was over done and tough, the custard apparently did not set properly because it was warm and runny. Also, seemed overpriced for what you got. Lesson learned, not someplace that I will return to. read more

I used to really love this place but today it was unfortunately just okay. We thought we'd stop in for Father's Day but were worried it would be packed since we got there around 12:30, but it was pretty empty. We waited a long time before our server even came to the table, we were starting to wonder if we'd made a mistake. We waited soooo long for our food, but the server wasn't even around enough to flag down. He was a very nice guy, but not at all concerned with how long we waited. The McDRG sandwich came missing it's avocado and was cold, not even lukewarm. I would've sent it back, but we had already waited so long, I didn't want to be the last one to get my food and drag the meal out any longer. The corn bread "bun" was a great choice for the sandwich but too crumbly to pick up. My companion ordered a breakfast sausage sandwich and it was huge compared to mine, which I thought was odd. You'd think items in the same category would be comparable in size, but she liked it even though she couldn't finish it. To be fair, we weren't in a hurry and didn't ask them to speed up, but it was an uncomfortably long wait for just an okay meal. read more
