This is my second experience with Doodlecakes and they came through yet again. I had a cake and some cupcakes made for my baby shower. I ordered a GDE* free custom mini cupcake assortment, and they were SO DELICIOUS AND SO CUTE!! They were for a surprise bday treat, and everyone was shocked that they were gluten, dairy, and egg free. We don't even have gluten restrictions, yet couldn't even tell they were gluten-free. They were sooo tasty!! And almost too cute to eat! You can just tell how much thought and effort goes into the presentation! I didn't know vegan + gluten-free cupcakes could be so amazing!! I wanted to get my bf a delicious birthday treat and found that Doodlecakes just opened up near me! I was so excited and couldn't stop thinking about what to order. There's street parking in front and it's pretty easy to find one nearby. Upon entering, I noticed how cute the decor was in the store! It's a very cute spot and there's outdoor seating. The bakery items were very fairly priced! I ordered a vanilla matcha cupcake, green velvet cupcake and the chocolate hazelnut cake jar. My bf loved the treats I got him and we both admired at how pretty the goodies were. We each tried all the items and agreed on how delicious these sweet treats were. I came across Doodlecakes in an Alameda Facebook group post, and I'm so glad I did! I asked Rebekah for a custom Skyline Chili cake for my friend's birthday, and was amazed to see she achieved EXACTLY what I was imagining! My friend was blown away when they saw it :) There were many tempting flavors for a custom cake! After hearing recommendations from Rebekah about what would work best for the design (she clearly knows what she's doing), I ordered a vanilla cake with a mix of vanilla/cream cheese frosting, and whipped cream filling with fresh strawberries and blueberries. The cake was absolutely delicious--everyone at the party raved about how it was moist with the perfect level of sweetness. Doodlecakes was very communicative about the delivery as well! I was texted about any delays, and called to ensure the cake made it to me safely after I asked a housemate to receive it for me. All in all, it was easy and a pleasure to work with Doodlecakes on a custom order. I paid $110 for my 6" custom cake + delivery + tax, and it was well worth it! Discovered this bakery while I was walking down Webster for lunch and kept it in mind for when I need to order some goodies for an event. I checked out the website and I was happy to see that you're able to pre-order online the night before and pickup at 11AM the next morning. I ordered a dozen cupcakes, and added a special request for individual packaging since my workplace still doesn't allow sharing food. They were accommodating, and I was very happy with the pickup process. Though it was a quick stop for me, the workers promptly greeted me and were friendly. I was able to try the Oreo cupcake and the texture of the cupcake surprised me. It's a bit hard to explain but it reminded me a bit of cookie dough. Flavors were great and the frosting wasn't overly sweet or overpowering. The cupcakes are so cute too. I sent my husband to go check out this place during their soft opening and there were only cake slices available when he went. They had told him that if he wanted cupcakes, it would be a 30 minute wait. Since I love strawberry cake, I had him get that cake slice for me. Each slice was $7.50 which I thought was a bit overpriced. Although the cake looked moist, it was actually a bit dry and crumbly. They might have pre-sliced them and had them sitting in those take out containers as seen in the pic. That probably contributed to it being dry. The cake itself wasn't sweet but the frosting was sweet so they balanced each other out. Decided to come again on a Friday after their Grand Opening already happened. I wanted to treat my 9 year old daughter to a treat to celebrate the end of the week. We got there about 6p and there were only cupcakes available but not much of a selection left. We ended up getting 2 chocolate and one red velvet at $3.25 each. It's the size of a standard cupcake. When my daughter ate her chocolate cupcake she said "this cupcake is dry. It's not moist" and then got herself a class of milk to dip her cupcake in. She did like the mini chocolate chips in the frosting through. I felt the same way about the red velvet one. It tasted like maybe they were day old and kept in the fridge overnight...then frosted the next day. I've seen other reviews show some peaches and cream cake jars and one day I'd like to try that since I love peach anything. Wasn't quite sure what to expect before visiting as a result of the mixed reviews (some of which seem to be unreasonable people wanting free compensation for something silly), but definitely worth a try especially as a new blooming business. Unfortunately the head baker/business owner was out of town the weekend I came to try but rather than closing, the family of the head baker (husband, brothers, fathers etc.) had an event where the men all run the bakery for the weekend. Though the decorating skills weren't top tier, but it was great to see all their efforts and creativities showcased with the recipes of the head baker. The flavors were awesome and I can tell the head baker has taken constructive criticism from the patrons and made corrections/adjustments to some of the cupcakes and flavors. AND there are gluten-free and vegan options available. I look forward to coming back when the head baker is back....and maybe even the next event when she's gone. read more

Today was this bakery's 3-year celebration so I stopped in to check out the festivities. Wow, the owners are incredibly imaginative - they had a human "slot machine." I was so happy to win 6 cupcakes since their quality is so high and not readily matched in this area. I tried a sort of cupcake parfait creation with chocolate cake, decadent icing and a hazel nut topping. WOW! Maybe one of the best desserts I have ever eaten, absolutely scrumptious. The owners are extremely cordial folks as is their staff. It is a very cheerful and welcoming place. You probably won't get to see them in their celebratory hippo purple vests and bow ties as the anniversary ends this evening. I've tried almost every cupcake place in Oakland or alameda. I wanted to try this place because it looked so cute and is new, the cupcakes and cakes are decorated well. As far as flavor, this is my review. Vanilla matcha was the best, the icing isn't to sweet and it's light and moist. The chocolate cupcake was the worst, it had a very odd flavor and I love chocolate. The Oreo cupcake (non vegan) was very dry and dense, the icing also was to sweet. PLEASE NOTE NEW HRS, which apparently just changed. We came after lunch on a Friday, but fortunately arrived 10 min. before 2p, so we didn't have to wait long. Please note the storefront is very tiny, and only 2 people (with masks) are currently allowed in at a time. Only cupcakes and four types of cookies were available. No other cakes or pastries. There was a good selection of different cupcakes, with cute/humorous names, very attractively frosted and decorated. I didn't count exactly how many varieties, but I'd guess about 10 different kinds, so you can probably find a couple of flavors to try. Spouse got a chocolate and I got a vanilla cupcake. Both cakes were moist; the vanilla noticeably denser than the chocolate. The vanilla cake was good, but the chocolate tasted like cocoa but without any sugar added, so the chocolate flavor didn't really come out and was flat-tasting. Frostings were very sweet; the chocolate had a nice well-balanced flavor. I appreciated the big ripe strawberry on top of my vanilla frosting; it added some welcome acidity. Spouse got a chocolate chip cookie. We like soft cookies, but this is relatively thin and you are warned, they are very fragile. We put them in a bag from the car and the cookie broke up a bit by the time we got back home. Doesn't affect the flavor, but if appearance matters, bring or ask for a box! I also got one of the lemon bars, which are cut into small squares and packed in pairs, one atop the other, in cute little plastic boxes. We tried the new neighborhood cake shop tonight for my daughter's Birthday. We ordered Vanilla cake with matcha and whipped cream filling. It was DELICIOUS! There are 5 of us and 3 are super picky- we all loved it! The cake had a delicious vanilla flavor and the matcha was perfect with the whipped cream. I am glad we got the larger 6" size so we have leftovers and I can pass some slices around to friends tomorrow. It was decorated nicely with cute sprinkles, and my daughter was so happy with her birthday dessert tonight. Sometimes I buy cupcakes and think 'mine are better, I should have made my own'. This is definitely NOT a place that made me feel that way. Even my 19 year old loved all 6 flavors that I bought; my 19 year old who told me 7 years ago that he doesn't really like cupcakes/cake much and usually only eats maybe half a cupcake in an attempt to understand why his mom loves sweets so much. I was super excited to have a new cake shop in Alameda but the cupcakes I tried here really missed the mark. The shop is cute and the cupcakes look cute, but those are all the good things I can say. First, it's super weird for a cupcake shop to sell their cupcakes chilled if they are meant to be eaten at room temperature. It's a little frustrating I cannot buy one to eat right away. Also, it really gives the impression the cake either was baked a long time ago or it's not baked on site, even though they say they're baked on site. If they are fresh baked on site that same day, why on earth are you ruining them this way????? It's pretty basic food knowledge that refrigerating cake dries it out and makes it go stale faster, you'd think a professional baker would know that and not allow their cakes to be stored and sold that way. Anyway, I did give them the full fair shot by waiting until the cupcakes were room temperature before eating. The cake itself was dry (which I was already expecting given the refrigeration) but also dense and clumpy. It was more like cheap cornbread than cake, not a good mouthfeel on the texture. I tried 4 different flavors - the only one that had any flavor in the cake that came through was the chocolate, the rest just tasted sweet but lacked depth and complexity of flavor. The icings were ok but nothing special. Texture of the icing was fine but again not much depth of flavor at all, just sweet. If I were blindfolded and you fed me these cupcakes, with the exception of the chocolate I would not be able you tell you what flavors any of them were. I'm a cake snob, so take that for what it's worth but overall this bakery was extremely disappointing. I've had significantly better cake made from a Duncan Hines mix. read more
