It's bang opposite Yale so I expected it to be bustling but when we went on a week evening around 6pm, it had 2 people + lotsss of seating. We got an original glazed, peach cobbler and iced vanilla sprinkled donut - my fav was the peach cobbler. Iced vanilla was just ok and original glazed could do with a little more glaze imo. I needed some coffee and desert after visiting the Yale University Art gallery, this was a perfect location and only short walk away. Not a large space, but a fun atmosphere nonetheless. Many students hanging out who seem to be studying indefinitely which made finding an available seat somewhat difficult for new, paying customers. A rather chaotic ordering process, it's unclear where to order/pickup, etc. So, I just jumped in and ordered a couple glazed old fashioned donuts and a cup of coffee. The service was nice and prompt however and I have no complaints there at all. I was in luck to be able to grab a stool by the door along the wall. Donut Crazy is a delightful bakery with many locations throughout parts of Connecticut. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit and walked away with half a dozen donuts, so off to the races. Clockwise from the top left down we have: Cookie Monster Donut has a nice glazed donut beneath an excellent cookie pieces and blue glaze topping. Monster Red Velvet Donut truly is a monster, like Frankenstein. It is asembled together with a red velvet base donut and a marshmallow cookie dough batter topping with sprinkled M&Ms. Cannoli Donut is a meal. The dough is good, and the topping and filling are high quality. Mint Chocolate Chip was more a hint of mint, but that is a good choice as it doesn't overpower the chocolate donut underneath. Snickerdoodle Donut has bits of Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal, is a cake donut, and is another in the line of great donuts here. Black Hawk Donut is a chocolate glazed cake, embossed with chocolate drizzle and Oreo pieces. It is quite possibly the best glazed chocolate ever. The staff was also very friendly and helpful, and as I traverse the donut shop landscape, I often come away underwhelmed and disappointed. However, crazy as it may be, Donut Crazy did neither of those things, and has risen the ranks to be a perennial top contender for having great offerings. As an aside, I ventured there at 6:00pm, and as I told the staff that it was my first visit, they said that I should have come earlier! O doubt, the best selection occurs in the early morning hours, but if what I 'ended' up with is any indication, their 'premier' selection must be off the charts amazing. Additionally, I must say that each individual donut was $3.75 each. Quite expensive, however, the quality backs that price up. Awesome donuts! They always have an amazing variety. I love how fluffy their yeast donuts are - so airy and not heavy at all. They also have a perfect amount of frosting. I enjoy coming here, I can't get over how tasty the cannoli donut is. That is the only donut I have eaten from here. ~$4/ crazy donut I thought the prices were pretty reasonable. The donuts are pretty big and the cannoli donut is made with ricotta cheese cannoli filling and you could have enough filling for a second cannoli! If you love unique and fancy donuts, look no further, Donut Crazy has all of the donuts you are looking for. While they offer multiple classic donuts, I recommend you try one of their unique flavors. Every time I try a new flavor, I am never disappointed. I recently had the strawberry cheesecake donut and the dunk-a-roos. I often find that some donut places serve donuts that are dry, or the they have frosting that is crusty. Both the strawberry cheesecake and the dunk- a-roos had frosting that was moist and sweet. WOW, they were spectacular and incredibly sweet & filling. Hopefully you can go with someone and split them. You're going to want to try them all, but remember they are incredibly sweet and quite filling, making it hard to eat more than one. I enjoy the cozy atmosphere inside Donut Crazy- New Haven. Imagine if I went to college here, or lived here. I would be weighing over 600 pounds. The donuts are that amazing here. They are big, delicious, cheap, and fit the bill perfectly. This use to be a very good Donut Crazy out of the chain of ones I've been to. However recently it seems either ownership or management changed. I walked in to empty racks and only 5 available flavors and those only had about 5 each remaining or less. I should of just walked out then but didn't. I got a half dozen of what I could and was shocked that the doughnuts are now bite sized abs also were stale. I've never ever had them this small or stale and this was not worth the $20 that usually is 6 huge , fresh doughnuts. I am a lover of all things chocolate, so I knew I definitely knew one of my options had to be the black hawk, which is a must if you are a chocolate lover! Second runner up is the powdered jelly donut. It's filled with the most tasty blueberry filling! Make sure you have napkins though because this one can be a bit messy. Donut Crazy is pretty okay, but maybe I'm just not the type for having bread-y donuts. The donuts itself are pretty heavy and not so much a melt-in-your-mouth sensation. I got the original glazed and I have to say, it is very very dense but their frosting isn't overly sweet! The service was pretty okay. The cashiers seemed really off put by how long everyone was taking to figure out what they wanted to order and constantly gave exasperated looks at the customers. I tried a creme brulee donut and the bruleed glaze on top was gorgeous, with that classic golden and caramelized crack you'd expect from creme brulee. This was a yeast donut that was decently fluffy. I came towards late afternoon and there seemed to be a decent amount of stock. It wasn't the freshest donut I had, but that's to be expected when they're not scooped off the deep fryer. Recently, I had the opportunity to give them another shot and I am soooo glad I did! My mind was absolutely blown by how delicious these donuts were, leading me to come back the very next day for more. Sadly, it was a Monday which means NO DONUTS?! The restaurant is walking distance from downtown new haven and specializes in donuts of course, but also has a regular menu of cafe items, coffee, and other drinks. The spot has comfy leather couches for lounging as well as chairs and tables for doing work. The decor is chic as well with an industrial/rustic feel. Then one day I found myself returning home from a trip in Rhode Island and decided to make a pit stop. Despite having donuts in RI, I decided to grab some in New Haven, CT. The RI donuts showed me the light...that donuts could be large and appealing to the eyes with peerless toppings and atypical dough. Donut Crazy furthered my expectations of a donut establishment not only with their offerings, but their branding as well. The menu was plentiful. The space was boundless. I was too excited to try the glazed that I forgot to take a picture beforehand. It was a little more cake-like than other glazed donuts I've had. The maple bacon was the same texture but I liked the maple icing with the bacon. It was a nice combo - can't go wrong with bacon! They have a lot of donut options along with other baked goods.
