You know THAT DINER? The one that lives deep in the American psyche, where the food is hot, the people are honest, and the prices are low? The one that you want every greasy-spoon diner to actually be? Don's is that diner. I concede that I've never had anything at Don's that isn't pancakes. Nevertheless -- they are some FINE pancakes, large and soft and deeply satisfying, calling out to me from my Sunday morning sleep. The coffee's always good, and the various breakfasts my wife orders are always marvelous. There's also a lot of history and character in Don's -- the walls are decorated with vintage Plainville/N. Attleboro photos and the joint's classic 1937 menu ("Hamburg, $2") -- but part of the beauty of the place is that no one (except me) ever seems to care. People come to Don's (and in substantial numbers) because it's clean, friendly, reliable, delicious, and cheap: which, after all, is what makes it THAT American diner in the first place. read more

I wish I could give this place two separate ratings. Don's Diner: pretty good old school breakfast diner. Food is good, prices are fair, service is quick. Exactly what you'd expect from a traincar diner that has been open for many years. Norm's Seafood: AWFUL. Went in there last saturday night and was one of only two tables occupied. It still took a while to get any service. My wife ordered pot pie and got what was really a $1.50 mini frozen pot pie from the grocery store. They didn't even hide the paper pie plate from the store. I had a fish and chips that was terrible. The fish was old and my fries ranged from burned to not cooked at all. Yes, some of the fries were actually uncooked. Don's Diner is cool and you'll be satisfied. They need to get Norm's Seafood out of there, though, because Norm's Seafood is wrecking their reputation. read more

Food was awesome. I ordered the steak bomb omelette and it was folded so everything was evenly cooked. The home fries were well seasoned-could have been a little crispier but super yummy. The Oreo pancake was good. Our server was very timely. She brought over coffee and checked on us a couple of times. I think I found a new breakfast spot :) read more

Loved it, loved it, loved it! The decor was nautical and 50's inspired at the same time. I love vintage places like this. The first thing I noticed when we sat down were the menus. They added fun information about the restaurant as well as the history of the town. The diner was also decorated with old pictures of the diner and town with stories beneath each one. We ordered breakfast and the food was great, exactly how I like it. I loved the homefries so much I tried to take some off my boyfriend's plate. Our waitress was also very friendly and very personable. I would definitely come here again, this is a hit on my list of breakfast places! read more

Took my Harley out for a stroll this morning and ended up at Don's.The diner has had some remodeling done to the exterior a number of years ago but ,the interior is probably 80-90% original and is in great shape and very clean too.It was kinda quiet this morning ,so I had a chance to talk to my waitress and pick her brain about the place.Seems that the same family has owned and operated the diner since 1936.Wow! They gotta be doing something right here!There are numerous old pictures on the walls and it was fun to look and for a moment, take a step back in time.I decided on a veggie omelet with home fries and a side of sausage.The omelet arrived hot and cooked perfectly and was nice and fluffy.The home fries surprised me.They looked generic but they were very moist and tasty also.Not being a huge fan of potatoes, I ate them all.Friendly service and never an empty cup, and all for a good price,I'd recommend Don's. read more

This review is for the night version of this location which is Norm's by night. I don't know if its two different owners splitting the restaurant time and space or what but that's the sign outside. Went here on a Friday at about 8:30, we were told to sit anywhere which we did. Not very busy at all, less than half the capacity. There was 4 people working as wait staff, at least supposed to be. 2 of them did look my way but never came over, I swear it almost seemed like they didn't want to do anything. We got up after a little over 10 minutes of NO service and walked out. No one seemed to care. I know Plainville is a sleepy small town but wake the F*** Up!! Again, being from NJ, I have some experience with diners. As far as Jersey Diners rate, if Don's was in NJ, it would rate fairly well. The coffee is good. It's not dishwater! I've noticed that diner coffee seems to be improving overall, probably from the introduction of good mass market coffee chains. Even though I live local, it took me a while to visit Don's because the hours were once so limited to weekend mornings. Now the hours seem to include the weekday lunch hour. The decor is dated, and my daughter complained about the seat cushion on the bench seating, but it's all a part of the ambiance of a 1940s diner. The food is homemade and delicious. The tables were fairly clean and the condiments were fresh. The flatware has seen better days but I can't remember the last time I was impressed by shiny new diner flatware. I ordered a 3-egg omelet with sausage, onion and cheese. It came with the prerequisite toast and home fries. These were real diner home fries with onion and crispy bits! The omelet was crepe-style with none of the ingredients fully integrated with the eggs. The eggs were folded around the ingredients, which allowed me to eat the sausage separately from the eggs if I wanted. This is a departure from the typical NJ diner omelet which arrives with the eggs and ingredients mixed together. Others in my party had pancakes, which I tried. They were light and fluffy. Everything was well done - no rubbery sausage or runny eggs. The prices reflect local inflation - around $7 for a 3-item, 3-egg omelet. This is value for your money compared with the chains that have so invaded the area - Cracker Barrel and the rest. The waitstaff was friendly and very attentive. It's also kid friendly. You can tell the waitstaff are parents just by the way they interact with the kids. Parking is tight, so I recommend street parking near the Post Office. If you're in the Plainville, MA area and you're looking for a good hearty breakfast, you have to give Don's Diner a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised. read more

Stopped in during the week around noon for a late breakfast. There were 2 booths with 4 people each and 2 at the counter...pretty quiet. Got menus, coffee and ordered pretty quickly. Hubby and I both ordered a variation of eggs Benedict. Food came in about 15 mins. Waitress asked if we wanted more coffee hubby said yes and she said she'd be right back. We didn't see her again for 15 mins. We both had over cooked eggs. I knew she was coming right back with coffee so we sorta sat there poking at our plates. We gave up after a while and just started eating, we were pretty famished. She finally shows up when we are finished to ask how everything was (guess she forgot about the coffee) and she saw the cooked egg yolks in our plate but still looked surprised when I said "eh". She did apologize after I pointed to the eggs. I know it's diner food and sometimes things aren't perfect, but so many servers these days seem to forget to check in after the food is brought out. I remember coming here as a kid growing up, and always associated this place with my youth. I recently came back mostly due to nostalgia but was pleasantly surprised that the food was even better than I remembered. We really liked Don's Diner. It's a very unassuming local's place but has good food and friendly / fast service. We enjoyed our breakfast, I has eggs with hash browns, ham, etc. and my wife had the breakfast sandwich with coffee. Simple, yes, but it was fast, hot, and yummy. I like choices, so the fact that they offer hash browns (yay!) or home fries (boo!), and V-8 (yay!) or tomato juice (boo!) is perfect because my wife enjoys the opposite so we were both happy. read more

The veggie omelet was delicious as were the home fries. I'm not a big fan of hash browns but when offered a taste, I found them to be pretty damned good. I love this place!! Decor is ocean and retro. Needs an update/renovations getting pretty old.. thats the only thing that pulls my score down - and they serve you on paper plates. The tables have trivia games and they bring you chocolates at the end! The staff spoils you rotten, they are so so so friendly. The clam cakes and blueberry cobbler are amazing. Very good prices. I have had better food, but its the only diner in town so its the best diner food around!! :) It can be pretty quiet during the day, but come dinner its very very busy! read more
