I was disappointed with my recent visit to Rolling Rooster. The young lady at the register left quickly when we approached, and when I asked if we could dine in, she told us there was no room. That felt unusual, but we decided to order takeout. While placing the order, she mentioned there were plumbing issues and something was overflowing, which raised another concern about the cleanliness of the environment. She also seemed anxious and unprofessional during the interaction. We were told the food would take about 15 minutes, but it ended up being closer to 30-45 minutes. Unfortunately, the food did not meet our expectations, especially for the price. The oxtails, rice, greens, and macaroni and cheese were around $36. The okra looked like it had been refried, and the chicken wings tasted as though they were cooked in old grease. The greens had an unusual flavor, and the macaroni and cheese did not taste like traditional mac and cheese. The oxtails were messy but not tender. Based on the lack of professionalism, the long wait, and the overall quality of the food, I do not plan to return.

They were perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of vinegar and cooked to that ideal tender texture without being mushy. The fried chicken and catfish were outstanding. Both were well seasoned, incredibly crispy, and tasted like they were fried in fresh grease. Every bite was hot, fresh, and full of flavor. The baked macaroni and cheese was good, but it leaned a little more toward a Velveeta-style cheese sauce than my personal preference. Still a solid 9/10. I also ordered the Peach Passion Fruit Hennessy margarita, and it was superb. Smooth, flavorful, and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The staff was friendly and welcoming, the prices were very reasonable, and the portions were generous. If you're looking for authentic soul food in Austin, The Rolling Rooster is absolutely worth the stop. I'll definitely be back.

They have a great beer list, and a full bar, however we didn't try anything this time. Place had a…read moregood 90's vibe (to me), very homey feeling. Maybe it just reminded me of how pizza places used to look growing up. Red booths, friendly service, dimly lit. Nowadays, it seems like most of the time I eat pizza is at a brewery, nicer Italian place doing stone fired pizza, etc, so it was a very nice welcomed change. We got cheesy garlic bread for an appetizer. It was just ok. We probably wouldn't get it again, there just wasn't much to it. Basically like a thin crust cheese pizza without the marinara. It did come with marinara & ranch dipping sauce though. Doing it over would have gotten a salad instead. They have a lot of good options for salads! We got a large pizza, 1/2 with jalapeño, pineapple, & feta; and half with vegan sausage & smoked red pepper. Both were good but the sausage one was our favorite. Very savory, & I guess since it's something we can't get most places, it was a treat. Lots of topping options, even vegan pepperoni. Toppings were fresh. Iced tea was watery, so I wouldn't get it again. Awesome service, & also gave us $5 off for paying with cash.

The bar area was pretty well populated, but the ol' folks seating was pretty much open. Service is still kind of a Covid hold over, no items on the table, QRF code for menu. Did have to ask for silverware, napkins, assuming same applied to any parmesan/crushed pepper. Weird. The pizza was really good, and they still have a good craft beer selection for the beer nerds.

Most of the flavor is on the outside though and because the chicken is so juicy and big the crust falls off. The chicken sand which is HUGE. There is so much meat and the ratio seems really off. The bread gets really soggy fast but the coleslaw and pickles are a nice addition. The flavors are really solid. The medium is the perfect spice for me. The tenders are okay, since I got mild it wasn't really flavorful and the dang sauce isn't very flavorful either. Food was made to order because it was HOT. The brewery area is very cute and fun but the parking situation is not great.

They make their food to order bc our food was STEAMING. The chicken sandwich was a behemoth of a sandwich. I could barely bite it, but worth the $15! The bun was extremely soft, but the ratio of chicken to bun was a little off. Their pickles are sweet which is ideal with that level of heat. I got the hot which was perfect for me. The fries are amazing tbh, even after sitting in the fridge, they had a great flavor and texture somehow. I wish they put more sauce which is probably my personal preference haha It was a good meal overall, but not my favorite fried chicken spot. The burger with curry sauce WAS SO GOOOOD!! If i came back, I would get that. Smash burger patty with a pillowy bun - delish!

TLDR: Phenomenal chicken and excellent fries. 'Nuff said…read more Fantastic! Salivating while writing this review. The chicken is stellar. Thick pieces of juicy chicken with a wonderfully crispy shell. My husband and I got the 3-wing plate to share. They are fat wings so it was sufficient as a large snack for each of us but not a meal per se. As far as spice level, they've got a range, as well as a couple non-spicy flavors. We played it safe with mild (for my sake) and it was actually a pretty robust mild. We also got the fries on the side and I was impressed. Not usually a crinkle-cut fries gal but these were great -- perfectly crispy. There was a bit of a line on a Saturday afternoon (Labor Day weekend) but it took about 5 minutes only. Not bad. Friendly staff. Quick service. Outdoor patio. Lest I forget -- they get bonus points for having a business card jar! "Drop your business card to win a free lunch." I haven't seen one of those in ages. Cool!

Ordering was quick although they did make a mistake and forgot to put cheese on one of our sandwiches. We ended up ordering a few chicken sandwiches of varying spice levels (their ghost pepper is the REAL DEAL) and some sides of fries, mac and cheese, cole slaw, grits, and a dessert of peach cobbler. The food came out pretty quick for what looked like an understaff kitchen and we were excited to start digging in. The sandwiches are pretty good, in our opinion still a half step behind Popeye's, but still pretty good. The sides were hit and miss though. The grits and cole slaw were good, but the fries were okay and the pimento mac and cheese was a miss, mostly because it felt like a bit too much spice for mac and cheese. Lastly, the peach cobbler was pretty good. Nice and sweet with a nice crust mixed in. For our first time we thought Hattie B's was decent and serves as a good, casual alternative to some of the more traditional sitdown restaurants around it.
