Came here for lunch on a Friday a little before noon. Ordering is done via QR code, we got our food quickly and the folks working there were very friendly! I went for the jerk chicken and rice bowl. The serving size was generous for the price and I enjoyed getting a good variety of tasty mix-ins for the bowl. Great service. Got the half and half bowl, have mac n cheese, half rice. I added extra chicken. Rice had a nice spice to it. The MnC was lovely. The corn they add was very yummy. The slaw was a nice refreshing bite. The chicken was bordering over cooked as some of it was a little dry. The flavor wasn't as pronounced as I was expecting though; I didn't get any heat, ginger, allspice from it. The fire sauce was nicely hot, about a 6 for me. The spicy ketchup was good and actually hotter. I got the empanada too; nicely flakey and good flavor as well. Walking up to Mr. Pimento satisfied two goals: 1) quell my hunger and 2) satisfied my insatiable desire to be a lifelong learner. I am always on the quest for good plantains and decided to give Mr. Pimento a try. When I think of pimento I think of a sweet pepper that is mixed with cheese to create pimento cheese. Actually, pimento also known as allspice is the dried berry of the Pimenta dioica tree, native to the Caribbean. It has a combined flavor blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and pepper. Thus, Mr. Pimento is an appropriate name for this Jamaican food truck. Plantains can be cooked when they are ripe and especially sweet. Conversely, they can also be prepared when they are green and a bit tart. I like thesweet plantain version. The ones I purchased were sweet despite their darker color. They were also very soft such that you could cut them with a fork. The food truck manager were quick to make recommendations for entree choices. I did not want something too heavy so opted not to have a bowl. However, I would definitely consider it for the future. It was pretty quiet at the Flamingo food truck park. read more

Delicious!! My favorite item was the hibiscus tea, as a Sudanese girlie who is a snob about Kakade this was just so refreshing, sweet and tart, everything you want from a hibiscus tea ( apparently it has cucumber brewed in it, clever!). The chicken was tasty, well spiced and the mac and cheese was creamy and at the same time light. Definitely recommend. The cookies were just a yummy bonus, they are really tasty chocolate chip cookies . What I loved the most is the food is not greasy, yet tasty. Finally got to try out Mr Pimento and i wish I hadn't waited so long. Jerk chicken is my favorite food and I'm a a tough critic since I make my own and have eaten at some of the best Caribbean restaurants around the world...and i love the unique bowl idea at this place! First of all the jerk chicken is very spicy and flavorful, and then I love how you can customize the bowl with rice or mac n cheese and toppings like kidney bean relish or butter beans. The seasoned rice is outstanding with jasmine, thyme, ginger, scallions, and fresh herb in it to give a lot of flavor. The plantain are caramelized just right to give it an extra sweetness and tenderness and they're available on the side. I was hoping they would have sorrel, but the hibiscus sweet tea is refreshing in the meantime till they get their act together to add sorrel. I look forward to trying other meat dishes soon. read more

He explained his take on quality driven Jamaican Food and was really hospitable and easy going. Mr pimento recently moved to North Austin where they're now located at the pink flamingo food court. They also revamped their menu so that you can customize your bowls based on your taste. I got to try the island rice bowl and the mac & cheese bowl, which comes with your choice of protein, toppings, and sauces. You can also order sides like a Jamaican beef patty, plantains, and wings. Shout out to Clay, Mike, and Sean for the excellent hospitality and making us feel like part of the family. The bowls are excellent, and it is tough to choose my favorite. Had an amazing experience at this place. The owner is really passionate about his restaurant and I think that dedication to the craft is reflected in the food. The hibiscus cucumber splash was refreshing, it went very well with the food. From the rice + peas, the jerk chicken, the cabbage, the butter beans and even the pickled onions (The jerk sauce was amazing), all the food was delicious. I was curious to see who took over the food truck of one of my favourite BBQ spots and it turned to be Mr Pimento, jerk chicken and such. I definitely had to check this place out. On my first visit, I really enjoyed the Jerk Chicken and Mac n Cheese, jerk chicken served alongside a hearty pasta dish made with cheddar, gouda and secret cheese sauce. Extra creamy, extra cheesy! The chicken was very savory and the sauce had my lips tingling, just the way I like my Jerk Chicken. My second visit was as eventful as my first. I had the Jerk Chicken and Big Up Fries. The Jerk chicken didn't leave my lips tingling and the Big Up Fries topped with parmesan, scallions, thyme, and cilantro. Garnished with caramelized sweet plantains and gently drizzled with Mr.Pimento's Jerk Sauce were a bit too much for my palate. Mr Pimento is doing an amazing job but I do not plan to visit again until after January 11, 2023 when he plans have more staffers so he can concentrate on keeping that wow factor afloat that I experience on my first visit. read more

The food is cooked well. But they do cater more to a pallet everyone can be ok with. If you are used to real Jamaican spices and flavor, authentic Jamaican food. I've gone here several times and these guys always kill it. The jerk chicken and jerk wings are ridiculously good, and served by the nicest dudes on the block. I am NOT a sauce guy, typically, but the flavor combination that they pull off in theirs is perfect. Tangy with a touch of sweet, *spiced* but not too *spicy.* That's a mark that most places miss, but not this joint. The quality is great and the price vs portion is incredible (as long as you're not ruining it by using Uber Eats or some crap). I go here when I am truly hungry. That said, they're always trying out new specials and right now one of them is more of a lunchy idea. Basically a Jamaican version of an empanada, but filled with their own flavors and prepared meats....for $7. Come on. Nothing in Austin costs just $7 anymore.
