The Mexican bread is decent and over priced. On two different occasions I've gone to order a bagel with cream cheese and both were a let down. They barely put any cream cheese and the second time, they also added jelly which I didn't ask for. Basically a waste of money because my kids didn't want to eat it like that. This place generally has hood reviews so I was convinced to come here. I'm currently living in Brooklyn from Texas & was craving pan dulce. I've had a lot of trouble finding any comparable Mexican establishments in NY but since the area was sunset I figured I had a good shot. I was sorely disappointed. This place doesn't have a big selection of pan dulcet bu it did offer my favorites : concha, cuernos, cachetada. I was even bamboozled into purchasing a big canela version of a concha.I took these home & was horrified. To begin with the concha tasted stale even though they assured me it was baked that day. It certainly tasted differently than what I'm accustomed to. The cuerno on the other hand wasn't as stake but tasted different than other cuernos I have tasted. In the same manner the cachetada or the bread with butter sugar smear tasted stale. Even the smear which is usually the best part was tasteless. Furthermore, the next day all of the bread was hard as a rock. I did ask where the owners were from because of course areas do make them differently. I for one am not a fan of D.F or surrounding areas type of style of bread , the best pan dulce I have tasted hands down are from bakers Jalisco. I've yet to find good pan dulce in Brooklyn but I'll continue on my search. I didn't try any of the food items so perhaps come here for those. read more

I went to get Pan Dulce and a large container of coffee for a funeral at this food establishment. I was treated with a lot of consideration and respect from the owner/management. She was so kind to my husband and I. She offered us a free tray, cups and napkins and even gloves for the small setup for our family during my granny's wake at De Riso Funeral Home nearby. My granny loved her Mexican Conchitas and so do I, though we are Salvadorians. If you are having a hard time deciding ask someone for some help and they would gladly recommend something. This time I picked up a small sweet bread with coconut shavings on top with a small layer of vanilla cream filling inside, just the perfect amount. If you like vanilla cream try the churros they are great trust me. If you haven't gone next door to grab some tamales I suggest you do. My favorite are the salsa verde. . A small amount of green salsa with melted cheese inside which is amazing. They tend to get sold out so don't be disappointed if you are not able to get one. They also sell some candy (that children like to swipe when their parents aren't looking), corn meal, and other necessities. The cookies weren't the best I've had; they were the typical dry, good for dunking fare, but they didn't seem like there was anything special. I'll have to try a piece of cake next time. There are trays at the front with tongs (I forgot tongs and was kindly but firmly shown that tongs are necessary) that you take to the shelves in the back. Moist and generously filled with either cheese, pork, or chicken, these Tamales should be on every NYC cheap eats best of list, if you ask me. Pick up a couple and you have a filling and soul-satisfying lunch for under $5. I confess I have not tried anything else on the menu because I cannot get past these. Pro Tip #1: You may want to bone up on that high school Spanish to communicate more than the basics. I STRUGGLED to convey that I wanted sides of hot red & green sauce (which I highly recommend) to go with my Tamales on a recent visit. Finally, it turned out another employee knew English. (Bless you!) Pro Tip #2: If you're feeling confident about that Spanish, you may want to call ahead to make sure Tamales are available. On one visit, we wound up waiting 40 minutes for them to make some. On another, they only had the Chicken.& Jalapeno filled option. Pro Tip #3: Albert Einstein defined insanity as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Run, don't walk here to get one of their tamales. They come in three flavors- Green sauce stuffed with cheese, red sauce stuffed with shredded chicken and jalapenos and mole stuffed with pork. They are all incredble. They are also insanely cheap-- just $1.50 each. Don't be turned away by the sort of dingy interior. Pretty much every customer here is Mexcian and they know their stuff. A+ on the tamales. That being said, don't bother with the Mexican pastries. They may look good, but they really don't taste good. The donuts or "donas" as they say in Mexico are pretty decent, but the rest of the pastries are NOT good. I am a HUGE fan of Mexican breads and sweets and consider myself a "concha" connoisseur. These arent sweet and just taste like dry bread. Save the calories for the tamales. Nice plus-- the owner works the cash register at the tamale and lunch counter and he is EXTREMELY nice and really gracious. They bake all the pan dulce (sweet bread) in house, and it has that perfect bakery smell even when you walk past it outside. Definitely stop in and try the bread. It goes so well with coffee and the family who owns Don Paco Lopez has been baking pan dulce and running a bakery for generations, so they definitely know what they're doing and are really interesting to talk to about bread, Mexican culture, and the history of Sunset Park itself. My favorites are the conchas with either a hot coffee or a champurrado, which is a hot chocolate with a little bit of corn atole. Growing up in California and frequenting many taquerias, I stumbled upon the law of size/quality. Briefly, the law states that the quality of food in a taqueria is inversely proportional to the size of said establishment. This being my second trip for Mexican food in Sunset Park, I found the law to be in full effect. The other place I went to was small, cramped, and dimly lit compared to this place, and as such, this brighter, cleaner, more spacious establishment offered up an inferior food product. Don Paco's is actually a two for one deal, with the panaderia occupying a sliver of a store and the food serving portion occupying the slot next door, with the two connected by a generous hallway in the back. The beverage cooler was well stocked with a wide variety of Jarritos, which was nice. It turned out that when I visited, they were out of tacos and certain kinds of meat. Not sure how they were "out" of tacos but could still serve up other stuff like tortas, unless, I guess, they ran out of tortillas. But this didn't bother me, as I was looking forward to a torta anyway. They have several kinds of tortas from which to order, each stuffed with different combinations of fillings. Alternatively, you could sort of build your own. I opted for the latter option and ordered a chorizo con huevo torta with quesillo and avocado. The basic torta cost five bucks and the quesillo and avocado were about 1.50 extra. Although, on the whole, the torta was pretty good, my standards are pretty demanding of Mexican food (not that I wont eat/appreciate most Mexican food I come across, but if I'm going to praise it, it better be really damn good), and in this case, Don Paco's was not good enough to be held up for praise. They prepared the chorizo y huevo so that it came as this patty-like thing. It seems they scrambled the eggs along with tiny pieces of chorizo so that in the end it seemed more like a veggie burger patty than any huevos con chorizo I've ever encountered. For me, the allure of the scrambled egg and sausage is the combination of fluffy, moist egg punctuated with flavorful chunks of chorizo goodness. So, the "chorizo'n'egg patty" was definitely not up to snuff. Otherwise, it was a pretty standard torta. Not bad, but not particularly mind-blowing. So, on the food alone, I'd give this place a three. But, right next door is a panaderia. So, I'm bumping this up to four stars because I was able to enjoy the wonderful Mexican bakery smell as I ate my food and was able to pick up some conchas and bolillo to take home. All in all, four stars for satiating my hunger for a taste of home. read more

Customer service sucks! I placed an order for 30 tamales the day before picking them up. I picked them up on a Friday and placed all of the tamales in a steamer on Saturday and noticed I was 3 tamales short. I called the restaurant and received a call back from a manager. He essentially told me that I was wrong several times because his staff told him they had actually given me 2 extra for a total of 32 tamales. I reiterated that I carefully counted them as I placed them in the steamer. I had to ask for a credit for the 3 tamales I was short and begrudgingly agreed. He then told me I was undercharged because I was given hot tamales after 12:00PM which is an extra cost. I explained that when placing the order I specifically asked for cold tamales because I would be placing them in the fridge. I shared my concern that this may not be the first time I am shorted tamales since this is my 4th large order I placed but the first time counting them. He did not seem concerned and repeated that he believed I was actually given 32 tamales. I will not be giving this business any of my money. read more

I'm all about the tamales here. It's my breakfast probably 2 weekend days a month and they're great. Don't sleep on the cheese. Most people I've brought there don't take me up on my cheese recommendation and they (whether the know it or not) regret it. I've also had a few of the tortas, and while good, theres other places in the neighborhood where they're better. The bakery options are good, and the churros (cream filled) are extra great if you can get them earlier in the day. Maybe I don't understand the subtleties of Mexican baked goods but a lot of the different items seem super similar to me. Everyone in there is super nice all the time.
