We have eaten at Don Jose's several times and enjoyed it, so we decided to order delivery one night. That was a mistake. The "On the Menu" delivery number wouldn't take orders over the phone, so we had to order online. The ordering process was fine, and it was nice to see the stages of the delivery in kinda real time. But the monitor said that our food had been delivered before the driver arrived. After several minutes, the driver called because she was unable to find our address, and needed some additional directions. Once the food arrived, we were even more disappointed. The food was cold. Yes the driver got a little lost, but it was clear that even if she had found us right away, the food still would've been cold. Even more disappointing were the portions. My enchiladas were small, and the rice portion was even smaller, much smaller than you would get in the restaurant. My wife had an a la carte burrito, so she ordered a side of rice and beans. For the $3.50 extra cost, the portions should be much larger. On top of that was a high delivery charge that really made the whole experience not at all worthwhile. Our server was Nancy. Pleasant personality but gave us below average attention. She didn't ignore us but she could of stopped by our table a little more than she did. She had forgotten to place our appetizer of nachos altogether and had brought our entrees out. Speed of service wasn't slow but it was below average. Since she skipped our appetizer you would expect it to be around 20 minutes. It actually took closer to 45 minutes. For three people the ticket came to $77. Which I think is a little high considering the portioning. All in all, it was an average dining experience. Nice atmosphere, the decor was typical of a Mexican restaurant. Came here with some friends last weekend and got the chicken fajitas. They were very good and probably some of the best Mexican food I've had in Anchorage. I would rate 5 stars but I didn't experience too much of the atmosphere because the place was super busy and kind of slow. Would definitely give it another try in non peak hours. read more

If you want to get ripped off, then this is the restaurant for you. Drinks were way overpriced. I can get better drinks with higher quality liquor and better service at the Bear Tooth Grill. Service was mediocre, as was the food. The worst thing of all was that a friend of mine, who had paid her own check, was also charged for someone else's food (we all had separate checks) without her knowledge or authorization. The oversight was corrected in less than 24 hours by the people who forgot to pay, yet Don Jose's still illegally charged another person's card. When contacted for a refund, management seemed to care less, had no apology for my friend and 3 days later there is *still* no money refunded to her account. read more

Food wasn't out of the ordinary...passable at best! When the fajitas came to our table, they weren't sizzling...aren't they supposed to be? The worst part was the charge for an additional basket of chips. There were 4 of us and we went thru the first basket rather quickly but it would've been $2.40 for another basket - that is a joke! OK food and a charge for chips makes my rating a 1. On Cinco de Mayo, I took my family into the restaurant and had one of the worst experiences ever. It took the waitress 20 minutes to come to our table once we were seated. She took our drink orders, which included water, but never brought the water to us. She never came back to refill my children's beverages. We didn't have silverware or napkins when the food arrived and had to ask the hostess and another young lady who was running food for water, silverware and napkins. The waitress didn't come back to see if our food tasted OK or to ask if we needed anything. Once we finished eating, we had to ask the hostess for the check because we hadn't seen the waitress since she took our food order. She eventually came back to the table to give us a check. We DID NOT tip because the service was horrible. BUT when we reviewed our account, we saw that she tipped herself 10%. That's stealing plain and simple. I love coming here food is tasty and service is great! I see people complaining about the charge for the chips. If you sit in the bar are they are self serve ;) so eat up. Rachel is the one of the best bartenders ever, always attentive and makes great drinks. That salsa is fresh and has a great flavor. Love the seafood options that they have not all Mexican restaurants in town offer such wide variety of choices on their menu. They make the guacamole fresh at your table. I'm a fan!! read more

This is our favorite Mexican place in Anchorage, far better than La Mex. They start you with free house made chips and salsa which are delicious! They have a good variety of Mexican beers, including Sol- which can be hard to find. My favorite dish here is the grilled burrito and it is awesome!! Thoroughly average Mexican food. Everything was bland except the "hot, hot, hot," (waitress description) salsa. The salsa verde was exceptionally spicy for restaurant salsa. The chips were the same tortilla chips every restaurant in Anchorage uses. I got beef enchiladas...They were pure Sysco. I was initially impressed by the bar menu and got a raspberry margarita. Everything is overpriced, but it's pretty good. The appetizers especially. The quesadillas are small for the price, but quite tasty. The queso dip is pricey for queso dip, but an enormous portion, so I recommend that one. The entrees are pretty standard, but I can't think of any Mexican food I've had in town that tastes better. The main problem is the speed. Service is slow, but nice. Food is super slow. Super slow. Last night was slower than most night, but not a lot slower. Think 15-20 min for waters and/or bar drinks, and 30 minutes from order time for our appetizers. Darn tasty, though. Margaritas are all pretty good. Prices aren't posted, but I think they run from about 8-14ish. So, not bad. Just don't be in a hurry. read more

Don Jose's catering may be the best Mexican in town. We fed 60 happy people. Menu was chile Colorado, rice, beans, beef & cheese flautas and chicken taquitos. It was really delicious- everything was flavorful and the right size. Everyone is still talking about the beef flautas. My favorite was the pork Colorado. A nice change from usual catering. Seriously delicious! We appreciated that Don Jose's arrived at the time they said they would & even provided the heating dishes. Good value, great flavors, highly recommended! read more

I love this restaurant! It's close to our house and the food is fast and excellent. Yes, they charge for more than one bowl of chips and we all know why. One of my favorite Mexican places since I live nearby. I can walk or bike to it in summer. A friend and I were there Friday and I ordered a plain blended house margarita and seafood enchilada entree. The margarita just about knocked my socks off! My cheeks were numb by the time the food arrived. The enchilada was incredible - or maybe I was feeling so good from the alcohol it just seemed great. I wrote the following e-mail to Don Jose's management, and have not heard back describing the experience: Management, As someone who worked in the restaurant scene for 10+ years, this is the first time I have taken time to complain about an experience I had while dining, as I am usually understanding of things that occur. However, I had a completely unsatisfactory dinner at your establishment - one in which I was about to walk out after paying for the 1/2 served drink/appetizers while waiting an unreasonable amount of time for entrees. My boyfriend had his mother and niece arrive from Maine last night, and decided to take them to Don Jose's as we had good experiences in the past. This was not one of them. I would have complained yesterday, but out of respect for having visitors have taken this route. Upon arriving, we were seated quickly and greeted - received drinks in a timely manner, and then ordered a quesadilla appetizer that came out relatively quickly and tasted/looked like items we have received in the past.  Prior to delivery of the quesadilla we also ordered the fried avocado. From this point forward the dinner started to go downhill - we received the appetizers, ate... and waited. Finally the server came over and we ordered 3 of the 4 meals with halibut. About 30 minutes later, the server appeared back to the table, to state that the kitchen was out of halibut....... for the past 3 days. This seems like something that would have been caught when she rang it in, something that would be addressed to staff upon arriving to work, possibly on a white board of 86'd items, etc - so I would assume that she most likely forgot to ring in the meal and that is why it was caught so late. She then stated that we hadn't lost our place in line and could order different items, and there were 5 tickets ahead of us. During all this time, I  watched a table sit, eat, and leave. In addition, another table that had sat 30+ mins after us, and order, received their meals ahead of us for our newly switched order. This would be the last time that we would see our server, as she was clearly avoiding coming over to our table. I would have liked to order an additional glass of wine; however, I would have had to ask someone to scoot out of the booth and me go to the bar to receive any sort of service. FINALLY, an hour and a half after arriving, we received our food. And how it was cold, one could not even fathom. The seafood shrimp tacos looked mostly like a large corn tortilla with a tiny, laughable, amount of shrimp in them - I would have been embarrassed to take it to the table as a server. The chimichanga looked like it was fried twice, and wasn't even flaky/crispy like I have seen in every other Mexican style restaurant I have been to in the past. And the naked chicken burrito was flavorless, and I was up-charged for quinoa which the menu didn't state was an additional charge, rather an option. At the end, we mentioned to the server how ridiculous our now nearly 2 hour experience was and she said "well, we're low on staff, if you want to work in the kitchen or know someone then the wait time wouldn't be as long" in a rude, curt, manner. As someone who has been a server, I was in complete shock with how she addressed the situation - not one apology, total lack of customer service. And, from all of this our bill was $98.50, which as you can read above, was not the value that we received. I am writing to you to express my disappointment, provide you with the experience to address the issue with staff, and am hoping that you make it right and  provide me with some incentive to give your restaurant another chance, as previous experiences were enough to bring newly arrived guests to dine in. In addition, I am writing the email with the intent of allowing you to express any feedback to the situation, instead of publicly posting this as a review for the time being. Thank you, (Provided the date/receipt#, etc) Since I have not heard back, it only confirms my disappointment with the overall restaurant, and I will not be going back - nor would I recommend it to anyone. read more

This was hands down one of the best restaurants I've ever been to! The staff were so patient and friendly/attentive and the food was absolutely delicious. There was also a lovely variety of different food options on the menu and even a section of options for kids. It wasn't my suggestion to go here for lunch but I decided to go with the flow. As you walk in it's very dark & gloomy, feels pretty outdated but I didn't let it bother me. I was looking forward to the good Mexican food. As of Asian decent, I noticed that there were two seated tables before me & they were Caucasian. Then it came to my attention that the hostess & the waitress was Caucasian as well. I don't discriminate when there's good food, so it didn't matter. The waiter was okay but not impressive. So we got our food. Very much left to be desired. My boyfriend got refried beans & I, pinto beans; I don't remember him asking us for our preference of beans. The rice had a decent flavor but seemed old... my carne asada, bland & chewy. I could tell my boyfriend wasn't too happy with his fajitas as well. I was able to forgive the food because it was my first time. But what really bothered me was when someone from the back came to the dining room & greeted the other guests & asked them about their meal. This person didn't come give us that same attention & our table was just across from theirs. I can only assume he's the owner or a manager. So, it made us feel a certain kind of way... since the owner was Hispanic & our table was of Asian & Hispanic heritage, we felt he discriminated his attention with us because we weren't Caucasian. So, it appears if we are not Caucasian our patronage isn't appreciated at this establishment. read more

Went there for a Latin music night. I hadn't eaten all day. Sat down in the bar area where the music was playing. 5 min goes bye, 10, 15, 20, all the time servers are passing me no one stops to ask if I want a menue or a drink. Eventually the bartender as he is leaving from dropping off drinks at the table next to me asks If I want something to drink. 1 hour later still no server has asked if I want food. More effort was put into bussing open tables than service. I've had problems with the $%^# service here in the past but this is ridiculous. Cant tell you if the food is good or bad. If I could give a zero-star I would. A few days ago I order online for pick up. This is my first time in the restaurant and over 16 years. I wasn't familiar with the layout. I just remember the amazing food and awesome customers service growing up. I walked in, I sanitize waited a few minutes in the entryway and then I saw the big red arrows. I followed the arrows to pick up my order. I did not see anyone but heard people talking. I poked my head around the corner said politely, "hello". A lady gave me a look and walked away and told JON and he yell, "people cant be freaking patient anymore" his tone was like a smack in the face. Then he roudly ask what i wanted. I said i was here to pick up my order. He put my fajita salad in last knowing it was not complete. He walked me out put food on counter and walked away saying bye have a nice day. I felt so uncomfortable the moment Jon opened his mouth. I did not realize till i got home, WE HAD ORDERED ALCOHOL TO GO AND HE DID NOT EVEN CHECK MY ID. I got home to eat my food and my experience got worse. -My mom is allergic to onion, they put onions on her veggies salad. -We order 2 double margaritas, got 2 small single shots. -my fajita salad only had non seasoned chicken and steak 1 slice tomato, 1 slice brown avocado and a splash of lettuce. No veggies, no cheese, nothing close to a a fajita salad. The only good thing was the chips and salsa. The WORST part is when I called to notify them of my incorrect order, JON immediately said. "Well I cant help you. I'll have the manager call and maybe give you a discount on your next order." I was SHOCKED!! No offer to re-make our order, no refund, no appology or acknowledgement of my mother's allergies. I never got a call back and its been 3 days. I have called 2 more times and the manager is never in or willing to return my call. And JON always answered the phone. Go figure. It was a $73 order of crappy food and the worst customer service experience I've ever had at a restaurant. It angers me and is so sad that the staff at Don Jose's does not care for there customers or their well being. read more

I'm used to Mexican restaurants in Georgia...so I'm looking for an adequate substitute. I tried Don Jose's with my husband after hearing that the chips & salsa are bottomless (unlike another Mexican place I have been in Anchorage) and that their service is good. The verdict is: I will return. I had the carne asada with corn tortillas. It was worth the $17.99 as it equaled two meals worth of food. My husband and I ordered the queso. I am unsure of which cheese is used in it (the right kind -in my opinion- is Asadero), but it was good. So if it was knock-off velvetta queso blanco, it was well done. The only complaints I have are: 1. the chips. I prefer the smooth type of tortilla chips. These are closer to Tostito's brand. However, that is a minor complaint. Two kinds of salsa served with the chips, so it makes up for them not being my preferred Mexican restaurant fare. 2. The straight-backed wrought-iron detail chairs. Uncomfortable. Ask for a booth. I will return because this place is convenient. The food was delicious and the service should be envied by some other Anchorage restaurants. The service was prompt, accurate, and done with a smile. The manager (I think that's who he was) even stopped by to make sure our meal was satisfactory. There is a good ambiance too. The ambiance is similar to El Azteca in Atlanta. read more

Chimichanga, part ii. Came here after disappointment of poncho. Asked waitress if chimichanga was good. She said yes. I discovered that she never cooked one, when I asked. The chimichanga (shredded beef this time) was under cooked, evidence that the grease was used from the basket mark underneath. The only flaky part was the outer most flap fold of the shell. It tasted of old grease. The shell could not be cut with my fork even when a big effort was given, putting the burro leather in burrito.... The inside meat and whatever else was added was bland. The shredded beef was tasteless. The sides of the dish were equally bland. No taste separation from rice and bean. The freshest thing was the chopped cilantro that was in the chip dip. At least the chips came out warmed. read more

I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but I have fond memories of this place. Came here for my birthday one year (I believe 17th?) and they took care of us well. We had decent size party, so they gave us our own private area and kept the food coming. They also gave my dad a nice spot at the bar which was close enough to see everything (aka make sure we were staying out of trouble), but far enough to still be a "cool parent". read more

The menu here is wide with more seafood options than La Cabana. Their spicy salsa is really spicy, so I love a place that delivers on its promise of spicy. The strawberry daiquari was to die for, and the chicken enchiladas just ok. I was left standing at the host's podium for a good 7-10 minutes when SEVERAL waitstaff passed by, going to other tables. It wasn't even that busy in there...so their communication is lacking a little bit. Also, it might be time to upgrade the sound system, you guys sat me right under a speaker that faded in and out constantly with interference. read more

Nothing special. Over priced drinks. Our table of 15 didn't get chip refills & had to request to go boxes twice(presumably to give to their dogs since the food isn't that good). One of our buzzed friends put her credit card in the folder then went to the restroom & when she came back noticed the folder was there & took out her card thinking it had been run, not noticing it hadn't. The next day another friend noticed her credit card was charged too much. Turns out the restaurant just arbitrarily chose her card to pay for the buzzed friends bill. When we realized what happened the other friend called the restaurant to pay her bill & was told "oh this happens a lot. We just charge another card then refund it when you call to pay". What!!! Is that even legal? Yes the buzzed friend should have been more aware but really they can just charge some other random card at the table!?!? When the extra charge wasn't removed my friend called & spoke to Ivan who said they were working on it. She told him she was going to complain to the BBB & other places & all he would say was OK. Really? They obviously don't give a rip about giving good customer service. I'm telling everyone I know to boycott Don Jose's. read more
