It makes me sad to write this review as we've been coming here for almost a decade, but the change of ownership has seen a significant change in many areas, none for the better. I guess I'm echoing what other long term patrons have already shared. I don't see any of the lovely staff there. It feels less friendly. I used to tell other people to come here for the salmon sashimi, which was the best I had ever had... creamy, and thick generously slices. Not now. Yes, it tastes great, but the slices are very thin, almost translucent, yet the price is the same. It used to be presented on a bed of salad, with wasabi and ginger. Not anymore. Just 5 thin slices on a black platter. We had to ask for wasabi and ginger. The miso soup has barely any tofu in it. And they didn't have any beer - none at all. I think their license expired. The one server was pleasant but wasn't checking to see if we needed drink refills etc. There were literally six customers, including us. It feels like the new owners think some updated decor, which is actually nice, is all that is needed, and they can cut corners to save money elsewhere on food costs and servers. The sushi chef was not helpful the waitress was seating, taking orders, cashiering, delivering orders and the restaurant was filling up. I'm genuinely disappointed to be writing this, because this has been of my favorite sushi spots for well over a decade, and a place I returned to and recommended often. Unfortunately, after the recent ownership change, it barely resembles the restaurant it used to be. From the moment I walked up, it felt off. The open sign was off, the lights appeared mostly dark, and it genuinely wasn't clear whether the restaurant was even open. Inside, the restaurant has lost nearly all of its character. The art, signage, and warmth that once made it feel like a family-friendly neighborhood sushi spot have been stripped away and replaced with dark paint and generic wood accents. The result is a hollow attempt at an upscale rebrand that doesn't fit the space or the restaurant's history. Quiet lounge music played in the background, complete with ads every few songs, which only reinforced the sense that this was trying to feel upscale without the polish or cohesion to actually pull it off. The service is where things really fell apart. None of the longtime staff appear to be here anymore, either front or back of house. My server was extremely kind but clearly inexperienced. Service was slow, multiple items were forgotten, and basic execution felt shaky throughout the meal. They ran out of spicy tuna, and I noticed two separate takeout orders were prepared incorrectly while I was dining. The food itself was mostly similar to what it used to be, which only made the surrounding issues more noticeable. Overall, this no longer feels like a place built around hospitality or guest experience. What was once a dependable local favorite now feels disconnected from its roots, replaced by surface-level changes that appear to prioritize personal vision over what actually makes a restaurant work for the people dining there. read more

Really wanted to like this restaurant because its location is convenient, but each time we've gone, while we've been seated pretty quickly, we've regularly waited over 30 min for them to come take our order and are never checked on again after they've dropped our food off. We've also waited over 30 min after finishing eating to finally be able to find someone to bring us our check so we could leave. Important to note, the times we've gone aren't when they're busy. It just gives the impression that they couldn't be bothered and that customers are the inconvenience being there. We tried a couple more times thinking that it could have been a fluke, but this just seems like the normal experience if you choose to dine here. There are a lot of better places nearby where the food is fresher and the service is much better, so we probably won't try here again. read more

We've been to Domo Sushi several times and always enjoy the food. The sushi is fresh, flavorful, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality you get. They have a really large selection of rolls, so it's easy to try something new each visit. The ambiance is comfortable with a good amount of seating both at the sushi bar and in the dining area, making it a nice place to sit and enjoy your meal. The only thing keeping this from being a 5-star review is that the service can be a bit hit or miss depending on how busy they are. Overall, a solid go-to sushi spot we keep coming back to. read more

This used to be my favorite place in Santee. But lately, I've been disappointed. It's not as friendly as it used to be. The teriyaki chicken is dry and tough to chew. And they've gone to a salad in their bento box that is basically inedible. It's painful to eat as it contains dandelion greens and other pointed sharp greenery. The California rolls have gotten very tiny. The price has definitely not gone down and you get a lot less for your money. I miss the old staff and the yummy food. read more

I'm trying to raspberry iced tea today, tastes pretty good, little sweeter than I would like, but it's great anyway. I got the firecracker and some miso soup to go along with it. This place used to be awesome. New (apparently the original) owners have taken over and they don't believe in paying for any staff. The last THREE times we have been here there is exactly ONE person doing the register, phone, bussing, and waitering. It has been over 45 mins and out of my party of 5, somehow only my teriyaki was served, 30 mins ago. What?! So now my bowl is cold, and everyone awkwardly telling me to eat the entire time. Even the birthday boy. People are sitting around with dirty dishes in front of them, the guy is stressed (but still not moving fast enough,) and the young sushi guy (dressed like a random skater guy,) is moving glacially and chatting with the customers, and listening to his own personal music (80s rock,) like it's a seaside burger shack. The entire place is still waiting for their food/check/refills, or to order. Also, they haven't had takoyaki! My fav! It's technically on the menu, but not stocked. AND the orders have always been wrong. For example, no little soups or salad, even if it says on the menu selection that it comes with it. The waiter doesn't know what's going on, either. I feel for the guy, but the new owners need to pull their wallets out of their wherever and pay for some competent staff. I've literally been coming here for 8 years. I'm done with them. read more

We came on a Thursday night. Normally there would be more guests but there were only 4 other tables filled. The new staff is NOT trained. For example; My husband ordered sashimi and rice. The sashimi came out 10 min after. He had to ask for his rice to be warmed because by the time he got his sashimi, the rice was cold. The staff approaches the table with rolls in hand and says what they are while they're still 3 feet away. We all had to say "what?" After each roll. Approach the table, get to the table, then announce what you have! We have ordered yellow tail sashimi for the past 13 years here. The yellow tail i just ordered tonight was so thin and a small order, see pictures. The teriyaki sauce had SO much soy in it, and was not sweet at all. The miso soup had no tofu in it. We orders 7, the bowls that had tofu were pieces smaller than a green pea. Kids typically enjoy miso for the tofu chunks. Skimping out on tofu, really? We were not given wasabi and ginger which is pretty basic. When you have a party with kids, put in the kids food order first! This was our second time eating here since the staff has changed and we are so bummed! read more

I used to enjoy coming here. Prices are fair and the sushi is good. Decent service. Came by a few weeks ago for dinner with my siblings and we waited over 20 min and our rolls hadn't even been started yet. If there were many people in the restaurant it would be understandable but only 2 other tables were occupied at the time and one was already done eating. I noticed the sushi chef was just leaning on the counter texting with his gloves, then put his phone in his pocket, then grabbed the broom to sweep around the station with the gloves still on. After that, with those same gloves, went to start preparing the rolls for the table that arrived before we did. We left. That was gross and ridiculous. Not sure I will come back. read more

This place has CHANGED. Oh my! As a sushi chef & past server/manager in multiple sushi restaurants, all I could do is say to my family, "they need my help in both areas". Service not great. Sushi rice was bland and are they using long grain? Rolls very messy. Sushi is an art and we had a big miss during this dining experience. Octopus nigiri was a sashimi cut on a large rice ball, though I will say the octopus was delicious. Hamachi Kama was also good, not great but I enjoyed it. Sorry folks. I cannot give a 100% review. I did not get to taste the food. We came here on a Sunday. It was not full. But in 5 to 8 min, the place got packed. We were seated right away. But it too a while to get a menu. The servers seem very polite, there just not enough of them. There is really only 1 server and one chef. So unfortunately you can tell they were overwhelmed. We did not get to order because of this issue. So I ended up leaving. I will come back and hopefully have a new review. By the way, the ambiance is nice, with a traditional Japanese look. So apparently this place has gone through some major changes, replacing 80% of their staff.... The food has changed so much that we will not be going back. Specifically the chicken katsu my daughter gets is half as thick as it used to be, and they have either changed how they make their spicy tuna or order it premade now. My wife and I used to come here all the time and it's not the same anymore. I couldn't even swallow a bite of my tempura shrimp roll. It seems as though the tempura shrimp even changed. As for the service the last time we went there there was maybe 5 tables occupied and it still took 35-40 minutes to get our first roll, while waiting almost a full hour for our last roll, which we didn't even eat. I'm sure the new employees are doing their best but you cannot judge this place based off any reviews earlier than maybe 2 months ago. Wishing them the best. UPDATE*** I just called for some Togo food for my daughter... I specifically ordered a katsu chicken bowl, and after we hung they called back 5 minutes later to verify if i had ordered a katsu chicken bowl, or the bento box. Instead if putting in my order for katsu despite bowl or bento, waited for my reply which was 8 minutes later and made me wait an additional 20 min later after my initial order. read more

Had the worst sushi I've ever had. We got to the restaurant right when they opened for dinner at 4:30 PM. The server was nice and clearly doing her best considering the situation. My friend and I ordered our food right away since we've been here many times before and always loved the sushi. We ordered a bento box and two specialty rolls. The bento box came out first and fairly quickly. The miso soup was okay--one had miso paste and one didn't, but it didn't bother us too much. Then we waited almost 45 minutes for our rolls, even though there were only three people total in the restaurant, including my friend and me. We overheard the person making the sushi and the server discussing the rolls and could clearly tell something was wrong. At one point, the server asked my friend if she wanted to switch her roll in the bento box for dumplings. My friend asked why, and the server replied, "Oh, some people like to substitute for dumplings (gyoza or whatever)." My friend said okay and agreed to the substitution instead of the California roll that comes with it. I thought it was strange that she even asked that. When our rolls finally came out, they were not good at all--you couldn't even pick them up with chopsticks without them falling apart. We started talking to the other customer in the restaurant, who mentioned they messed up his roll too. He told the server not to throw away the rolls, and she responded, "Oh no, that's for a pickup order," which it clearly wasn't. It was obvious the person making the sushi didn't know what they were doing. That's when we found out the person behind the counter wasn't the sushi chef--the actual sushi chef had called out. It would've been nice to know that from the start. Later on, when more people came in, the server started telling new customers they could leave if they wanted since there was no sushi chef available. We ate our food because we were starving, but even after all that, we were still charged full price for sushi made by someone who wasn't trained. It also made sense why the server wanted my friend to change her roll to dumplings earlier. Overall, it was really upsetting. They should have been honest from the beginning instead of trying to cover it up. Poor communication and transparency with customers. read more

Went to Domo with my daughter the other night for a date. We had the garlic edamame which was delicious. The garlic is kind of crunchy so that's cool. We had the ring of fire, which is always our favorite and it was great. Also had a crunchy roll and the Philly roll. All of it was great and it's a lot to eat. We end up taking food home. Unfortunately, since the new ownership, both the food and service have gone downhill. I usually order the salmon with lemon roll, spicy edamame, and fried wontons, but lately, none of it has been as good or satisfying as it used to be. We did a to-go order of tako sunomono salad, dynamite, and garlic edamame. The octopus was okay, although oddly chopped, but the dressing had not a hint of sweetness to it. The dynamite used to have onions and a decent ratio of fish to krab, and ginger & wasabi used to be included. Even the garlic edamame was not as good as we were used to. Like everyone else has been saying, not good! I am literally sitting here right now as I write this. I can barely move my elbows off the table because of how sticky it is. We ordered a gyoza and it was cold so we sent it back, second order had hair on it. Finally got our sushi 30 minutes later and my sashimi had cling wrap on it. I've never seen wasabi in clumpy powdery form it's supposed to be a paste. We will not be back even with the gift certificate the manager gave us! Shame this place has gone downhill. I've been going to Domo for literal years. It's been one of my favorite spots for a long time, I've come many times alone, with friends and family. However, I went in tonight and it was not at all the Domo I've known and loved. Our order was taken wrong, and initially I was willing to let that slide because I understand that things go wrong. They did comp the incorrect item we received. However after that, an entire roll we ordered never came out to the table. I waited for a while, until I realized it would not come. Our server seemed really confused, and unsure the entire time. It was really hard to hear him, and he seemed overwhelmed. That brings me to another point; the staffing. I'm not sure if it was their grand re-opening party, since they've clearly been bought out, but the two wonderful ladies who have worked there and served me for years were gone and there was an entire staff of new faces. There was probably about 10 of them on staff, yet only one guy looked like he was actually working. He was not our server but he looked like he was carrying the entire weight of the restaurant on his back, while the rest of the staff, and whom I assume is the new owner, were standing around, not helping, taking photos and more focused on their PR then the customers and their experiences. One woman, who I can't even say what her job is, just sat around chatting and we saw her taking selfies in the service well. There were about three other people who I only saw standing by the front counter. Also, there was a young child, maybe around 6-8 years old running around the kitchen and sushi bar area. The person I was with saw the young boy touching avocado behind the sushi bar. Myself and everybody I was with all work in restaurants/bars and so we're very familiar with safety and health regulations and this made us feel very uncomfortable with our food. Who knows how many of our ingredients were touched and everybody knows children don't have the cleanest hands. Eventually, we waited for our check and to ask for a box but our server never once came back after the initial item mess up. Eventually, the one server I mentioned who was actually working, checked on us and brought a box and our bill. Then the cherry on top, my roll which I never received was still on my bill. I had to ask for it to be removed before I could pay. Overall, I'm very saddened by this experience. Domo was such a local staple and it is not at all what it used to be. Management needs to focus on their staff, training and service quality instead of standing around taking photos and videos while customers sit waiting to be taken care of. read more

My chicken yakisoba was generous with the chicken and vegetables but a little heavy on the soy. My wife had a salad that had not enough dressing and a salmon teriyaki that had a lot of sauce. Such a bummer. We've been going here for years. Something changed. The staff and the food have always been 5-stars, amazing - but this time everything was off. We got our "old favorites" and they were different, very poor imitations of what they used to be - items missing ingredients, items in a sushi combo just not given. We sent one roll back because it was missing cucumber and all the toppings - they said they were out of cucumber, that's a pretty common ingredient, how do you run out at 5 on a Friday and just choose to serve it without (there's a grocery store next door!!) We just decided not to have that roll, then 5 minutes later it has cucumber but is missing more toppings than the first time. We were just really surprised by the decline. Some wall panels were falling down, lightbulbs out, stuffy and hot, sad-beige food. But the miso was still good. The Vons deli sushi next door is better. Super disappointed with Domo over the past few months. We used to go there every week. Now, we have problems every time we go. Today was the worst service yet. When we got there, we were told to pick up our own menus and sit anywhere. We ordered four rolls (uncooked) and 2 hand rolls. It took over 40 minutes to get two rolls and two hand rolls. At 40 minutes, we were told they were out of spicy tuna and needed to pick two other rolls. The super frustrating part is that I saw the sushi chef tell the servers 15 minutes before that they were out of spicy tuna. The servers stood at the front doing nothing instead of notifying us immediately so we could still get our food for the adults at our table. After waiting 40 minutes, we decided to cancel the rolls instead of waiting another 40 minutes. The crazy part is that it was not busy. There are only half full. No one was moving fast and zero signs of them feeling busy. We got to the restaurant about 25 minutes after they opened. So, there's really zero excuse for any of it. They were also out of sprite and lemonade, and have no other caffeine-free drinks for kids (except water). And they still tried to charge us for sprite when we all got waters! They also didn't bring the side sauces we asked for. So now, we are still hungry and have to find a second option for lunch since we were only able to feed our kids. read more
