We didn't want to shop hungry, so stopped by here before grocery shopping next door at Aldi. Surprisingly spacious inside. They have a mix of standard and high top tables. When you come in you, you can sit at any table. They did have some signs that states for "3 or more people" on some of the standard tables. Service was fantastic. Our server was quick to get to our table. And we had a laugh about the name of the sushi. Menu is via QR code and bill payment was through QR code as well. Very convenient. Overall, food was ok. More Americanize. Did not taste authentic. Nothing to write home about but not bad either. For this reason, we will be back and at least give their other options a try. Sei Sushi is a solid sushi spot in the San Carlos area. Service is on the slower side so I prefer doing takeout. However, the owners are very hospitable so the dine in experience is always pleasant albeit long. All take out orders should be double checked because my orders always differed slightly despite ordering the same dishes. *Miso Soup: often diluted. Best when dining in but it resembles water with chunks of tofu and seaweed with takeout. *Spicy Garlic Edamame: the best rendition of edamame in SD. The spices and garlic give the beans a Cajun flare. Incredibly savory and lip smack inducing. *Chirashi Bowl: beautifully made every time and often covered in shiso leaves. The sweet shrimp is consistently the best item and the fried shrimp head is a good finisher. The tuna is fatty and not fishy in the slightest. The scallop is sweet and tender. The uni is umami and salty in the best ways. The salmon cut is generous but tends to be on the fishier side. The ikura complements the lemon slices and sushi rice well. The octopus is my least favorite as it's rubbery and overcooked. The fresh wasabi is always a treat when it's in stock. *Rainbow Roll: thoroughly filled with krab and covered in a thick cut of fish. Well executed classic. The rice also retained its integrity despite being stuffed. *Mixed Tempura: love getting their mixed option which includes fried shrimp, carrot, sweet potato, zucchini, and onion. However the fry is inconsistent and the tubers are occasionally underdone. *KBBQ Fries: crispy fries covered in a sweet and smokey sauce. The bulgogi is tender and slightly charred. Really good shareable and starter. Sei Sushi is by far my favorite sushi joint in the area. Dishes aren't always perfect but when they are, they keep us thinking about it for days. read more

Been here a few times, all their rolls are very good. I got the protein roll and garlic albacore nigiri, the nigiri was super flavorful and the fish basically melted in my mouth. All the fish in the protein roll were really fresh and it paired well with the sesame dressing. It's a small shop with not many options for seating, so it gets busy real quick. We came on a Friday night so it was pretty noisy, but I will definitely be back to try their other rolls, just not on a Friday night. read more

My cousin took me out to one of his favorite sushi restaurant and ordered everything that was delicious. The seared salmon with truffle oil was amazing. Also the creamy sake sashimi and honey sake sashimi were delicious. We ordered so many rolls that we couldn't finish and bad to take some home. The restaurant is a good size, they can accommodate small and large parties. There's also a sushi bar that diners can watch the chef prepare sushi. Our server was fast and nice, she knew my cousin. I've been to Sei Sushi only once and that was years ago! The look of the restaurant seems to have stayed the same and prices have definitely gone up, however, I think the prices on their rolls and entrees are pretty firm. Most of their rolls are all under $15, which is a pretty good price in my opinion! We got shishito peppers, uni and scallop shooters, and a variety of nigiris. The sauce for the shishito peppers was addicting! I could taste lemon and some ponzu sauce in the uni and scallop shooter. It had some black pepper cracked on top, and it was pretty flavorful! My nigiri favorites were definitely the yellowtail belly, truffle salmon, and uni. Their uni is sweet and creamy! I like that they also have chopped wasabi as I love it more than the regular paste they usually hand out. Service was busy but they work quick for an early weekend dinner. I would say this is the best sushi option for the La Mesa/ Grossmont area overall! read more

Nice sushi place that I've never noticed before! This place is close to my house and my roommate said she really enjoyed it so we decided to stop here quick before Christmas shopping. The service was pretty quick and it wasn't too crowded on a Wednesday night. We put in our order quick of the gyoza and Katsu bowl and they were out to us in less than 5 minutes. Both were Very tasty and hot! Gyoza were nice and savory with the sauce being just salty enough but not too much. The chicken katsu was very good, well breaded, moist, and the sauce was very, very delicious. She asked for extra to pour over her bowl to get down to the rice too. Stopped by to eat after work, at a bit after 5:00pm. When I entered I was greeted by staff behind the bar area. There were at least 4 other tables occupied. A bit of dark, cold basement vibe. The seating is still a tad sparse but enough to hold a good number of diners. Anime was playing on one tv screen and the other two had sports on. I went ahead to sit at the bar and was shown the QR code menu. Not a fan of these code menus and I work with the elderly and these don't work for them. Restaurants should offer both options to guests -deducted one star for that. I ordered a Flaming Sake roll, which arrived at the reasonable time.While I ate, a number of guests came in for takeaway orders. I did bite into a few seeds on the lemon slices that are in the roll but sushi was nevertheless delicious and filling. The server checked-up on me to see how I was doing and was really good about asking me if I needed anything right after I took my last bite. The delivered the bill and made the card charge fairly quickly and greeted me goodbye as I left. The owners of Sei and R&B Tea a few doors down are the same and they offer a reciprocal discount from your order if you bring in a receipt from either place. The restaurant is located at the same lot as Aldis and 24hour Fitness so parking is not an issue at all. Happy to find a decent sushi place when I don't feel like trudging up to the Convoy area. read more

The prices were reasonable with most specialty rolls going for $13-15. Regular rolls were cheaper. The fish quality was good. I just recently tried Sei Sushi for the very first time, I have to say I think their rolls are imaginative and their prices are fair. I had the Salmon and Garfunkel, the Salmon was generous and I loved the little micro-onion rings and jalapeno. I also ordered the Flaming Sake [yes, I love Salmon. They have a flair with the special details like finely minced onion and added masago [which I do love]. Wow, their spicy mayo IS spicy while so many other places are quite bland-mayo with no real kick. My only suggestion would be to feature the next size up 16/20s for the tempura shrimp used in the rolls. The smaller size is too small and it just seems a bit skimpy 21/25s and they have little flavor. Another note: a lot [most all] of the rolls here have krab. Their krab mix is very good, but sometimes it would be nice to have yellowtail or scallop instead of Krab which has wheat in it. The slightly sweet citrus sauce was nice. Yes, I'll definitely be back to Sei and really like to support small businesses. I think this will be my go-to. read more

I came across Sei Sushi when I was shopping at Aldi next door. It looks a lot bigger from the outside than it really is. They're a bit short staffed with 2 servers. We came in on a Friday evening and were seated right away. Despite the short staff, our food was quick and servers were very nice and friendly. Bring your cellphone to pull up the QR code for the menu. Being my first time I wanted to try the "limited specials" as I didn't want to miss out if it left the menu. We tried the bonito, rich Chris and dragon ball roll. See pictures for roll descriptions. My favorite was the rich Chris roll, which was a salmon with spicy Mayo and truffle oil and trout roe. I love truffle oil so that called my name. Our table also ordered the Parmesan truffle fries. It was lacking some ketchup, I probably would pass on those. The kids terriyaki meal was a good portion. However the chicken was way over cooked and sauce was too sweet. But I appreciated that it came with a small probiotic yogurt drink and panda cookies. Great incentives to pass onto the kiddo to encourage them to finish their entree. I had a good experience overall, but I am very sad that they use all plastic and paper everything. Instead of silverware we were provided with paper boats (the kind that you'd get with French fries in it), plastic soy sauce dipping bowls. And paper cups with straws for our water. And disposable chopsticks. Considering the volume of customers this is extremely wasteful. Sei Sushi please consider using actual dishes and cups. In addition, it lowers the experience of eating sushi in take out container style food while I'm dining inside. read more
