    8 piece nigiri combo
    Lam B.

Tappi Sushi has taken over the former Oyster Pearl & Bar space, adding to the already growing number of sushi spots in San Carlos. It was fairly quiet during lunch, and while I waited for my takeout order, I noticed several other groups also ordering to go. The staff member at the front was very pleasant and even offered us water while we waited. Despite the order being fairly standard, the preparation took longer than expected. Compared to other sushi spots nearby, improving speed would help them stay competitive. *8 Piece Nigiri Combo: included yellowtail, salmon, albacore, and tuna. The fish was cut generously thick. Each piece was also lightly seasoned, making it stand out from a typical chef's combo. The albacore was my favorite, topped with a tangy, salty ponzu. The tuna was tender with a smooth, silky texture. The salmon was soft and fatty, though more straightforward in flavor. The yellowtail had a decent amount of fat but a firmer texture that made it slightly less enjoyable. *Salmon Belly Nigiri: the cuts were long and visually appealing. The fish was tender and even richer than the standard salmon. I did wish the rice had a bit more vinegar to balance the fattiness. Overall, the nigiri quality was strong across the board. With more attention to rice seasoning and faster preparation times, this could easily become a solid go to sushi spot.

Tappi Sushi has been on my radar for a bit now and I finally decided to stop in and try it for myself. Tappi Sushi resides in a small plaza tucked into the neighborhood, it can be easy to miss but worth stopping by. Parking wasn't an issue around 8:30PM. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by everyone, cooks and waitresses. You don't really get that kind of hospitality anymore. I was here for takeout and picked up their menu brochure to browse. The employee was super sweet and let me know I could ask any questions. This menu is huge. 20+ appetizers, rolls, hand rolls, ramen, bento boxes, everything. It honestly gets a little overstimulating trying to read through it all. I also noticed most rolls lean toward shrimp tempura, spicy crab, or spicy tuna, and I wish there were more options highlighting fresh cuts like yellowtail or salmon. I ended up getting the seared salmon jalapeño appetizer, a baked salmon roll, and a salmon skin hand roll. Wait time was about 15 minutes which isn't bad. While waiting, I sat at a table and did notice the table was a little sticky. Not sure if it was the material or just needed a wipe. The same super sweet employee who took my order checked in with me as I was waiting to update me on my orders progress and even offer me some water. Starting with the seared salmon jalapeño, this comes with two pieces of salmon nigiri topped with jalapeno, spicy mayo, ponzu, and cilantro, lightly torched. The pieces were big and had that nice torched flavor I look for. It was good but nothing super memorable. The sushi rice though was really well done, good rice vinegar flavor and a nice sticky but fluffy texture. The salmon skin hand roll comes with salmon skin, gobo, avocado, radish, sprouts, bonito flakes, cucumber, and cilantro aioli. This one had a lot going on and a lot of sauce. It tasted heavier than expected, almost like soy or eel sauce was overpowering. The cilantro aioli added a nice herb flavor but overall it leaned too salty for me. For the baked salmon roll, it has krab, cream cheese, and avocado inside, with salmon, cilantro aioli, and eel sauce on top. Mine ended up sliding into the wasabi in the container which was honestly kind of frustrating. I'm not a big fan of wasabi so having it touch the roll already changed the flavor before I even got to try it as is. I had to kind of avoid that side and eat around it which took away from the experience. I feel like this could easily be fixed by separating the wasabi or adding a divider, especially for takeout. Flavor wise it was still good, I could taste everything, but the salmon itself lacked much flavor. I'd probably try a different roll next time. Overall, I like having this spot nearby. The food was solid but the service really stood out. Even leaving, multiple staff members and the cooks were saying goodbye which made the whole experience feel more memorable. Was going to give 4 stars but bumping it to 5 for the amazing service.

Good sushi specialty rolls at similar prices as other sushi spots. Love the indoor or outdoor options. Serving beer and wine and saki. Very attentive waitress. Overall a pretty darn good experience and will be back.

Nice little space, clean. And good outdoor seating. New Owners took over the Oyster & Pearl space. Service was great. Our server was Sarah, and she walked us through the menu and answered all our questions, and explained the rolls in detail that we were interested in. Menu was extensive, and had a good balance for non-sushi eating folks. I love that they have hour the whole day, Monday and Tuesday. We started off with the calamari ringers, lightly fried and tender. We went with the La Mesa roll which was topped with tuna and Lemon drop topped with salmon. Our fave was the lemon drop, the ponzu sauce and sliver of lemon was the perfect combo. I normally don't eat salmon, but this time I indulged.. fish was fresh. Definitely will be back to try additional items.

    Garlic Edamame

Tappi Sushi Lounge has recently taken over the Oyster & Pearl Bar Restaurant with this sushi and bar eatery. I stopped in for a late lunch or early dinner and ordered the garlic edamame, the protein roll, and Salmon Nigiri. Everything was quite good, especially the garlic edamame. The edamame were tender and delicious. Their garlic flavor was very good but not too strong, and they were well seasoned. The protein roll was very good, too. The roll came with yellow tail, avocado, thinly sliced lemon, and roasted jalapeno with miso ponzu, micro cilantro and masago. I loved the lemon and jalapeno combination. It not only went well with what was on top, but went well with the spicy krab, spicy tuna, and cucumber on the inside. It was a well balanced flavored roll. The salmon nigiri was excellent. The salmon had a very good flavor. The sushi rice was well made. Next time I need to try the tuna nigiri. The service was friendly. They have a nice patio and plenty of inside seating. They are under a soft opening and still working on interior design and finalizing the menu. Cool new sushi spot in La Mesa.

Service was amazing at lunch, our waitress was attentive and helpful. She was on it. We ordered several rolls, a nigiri combo and sashimi - loved the presentation of the sashimi. Prices were fair and there was indoor and covered patio seating and easy parking.

Tappi Sushi took over the oyster bar spot and it's starting to gain momentum! Still features the beautiful fire feature outside. Tappi has above average fish quality for a very reasonably priced place in SD area. We had a few appetizers, a couple rolls and nigiri. The rice is average as is the miso soup. Garlic edemame is also nothing special but I still love it! Some beers are only $5!!! They might become my local bar . Only gripe with this visit - the ceviche crackers. They look beautiful but are too thin and breakable to actually be used as crackers! And the octopus was over done and chewy (this is a common difficulty with octopus, you have to beat the heck out of it first, else its tough). I would not call it a family restaurant but they have those chop stick attachments, which helps my mini food snob not eat with his hands. Server was nice, attentive, and the food came quickly despite being a bit busier than I have been used to. Fun was had and we will go back here over the litany of other sushi places in the area (which we frequent bc the kid love sushi) for quality, price point, and ambiance.

    Sin city roll

This is a new location in La Mesa. They have a happy hour with pretty good specials and it is all day on Monday and Tuesday. I had the sin city roll, spicy yellowtail roll and chili brussel sprouts. My favorite was the brussel sprouts but everything was good. The service was great and all that cost about $30 because the happy hour. It was a great price, enough food that we both got full and they have the option of indoor or outdoor seating.

Food was delicious & service was great! We sat outside during their soft opening and it was very nice. Would definitely recommend.

Fried ice cream sans banana. Delicious.

The food is good. The service is great. They play good music in the bathroom. There's always parking. My picky boyfriend and I have eaten here a handful of times. It's definitely in our rotation.

    Thai tea

I love the sushi here! I had their sin city roll and their wings (lemon pepper and chili) and both were sooooo good! The staff is super nice too. Highly recommend! For ambiance, the place looks great so if you want to take a date there, you'll be good.

Incredible food & service. Our wait staff was fantastic and we were seated quickly. We ordered about 4-5 different rolls as well as a very delicious Strawberry Nigiri for drinks. The rolls had a good quick to them, especially the sin city & salmon roll as well as the ponzu sauce our waitress brought us. Desert was a choice of multiple mochis (the cookies & cream was my favorite) Overall, will be coming back!

This was a medical necessity to ensure my safety. Monitoring blood sugar is not something that can reasonably or appropriately be done out in public, and there was no private space offered or available at the bar to accommodate this medical need. Throughout the evening, I had used the same restroom multiple times with female friends without any issue. The only time staff intervened was when my husband was present specifically to help with a medical situation. We are older adults and long-standing, active members of this community. We rarely go out -- this was for a friend's birthday, something we do maybe once a year. We were with a group of friends who are also older adults, all of whom had been there for some time, simply sitting together and minding our own business, not interacting with or disturbing other patrons. Being removed in front of our friends, without any conversation, clarification, or discretion, was deeply embarrassing and upsetting. A simple, private question or a moment of understanding could have avoided this entirely. I hope management uses this as an opportunity to better train staff on handling medical situations with compassion, discretion, and consistency.
