I always attempt to represent the negative, positive, and neutral aspects of my experience with company in my review. In the case of Dollar Rental, there are no positive or neutral aspects. The rental experience, particularly at the MSY location, is painful from beginning to end. I can understand why this low-budget rental car provider is the only option for some, but if you can afford any other brand then I'd encourage you to explore those options. The Dollar employees leave the desk prior to the MSY Rental Facility closing (the building is 24 hours, but the rental companies each close at different times -- those closing times are not disclosed on the airport website). When I arrived, the Hertz employees were still present, so I requested their assistance with my reservation (Hertz owns the Dollar and Thrifty brands). I can't remember a time when I've had a more unpleasant experience with a company representative. This experience was shared by 12-15 other customers who later showed up with the same expeditions. Had a prepaid reservation for noon on Xmas day. Showed and was told I would have to wait two to three hours because they had no cars. 3 hours later and still no car, no solutions and no apologies. We arrived on a late flight due to bad weather around 2:30 a.m. and the Dollar rental car office was closed. There are absolutely zero instructions as to what you should do. There is NO SIGN posted saying what time they open up. We are told by the security guard they open up at 4 am. We say with a two year old on the cold floor for two hours waiting for them to open up with the other people who missed the flight. The security guard then told us at 4:50 am that there is also an office upstairs that has been open since 4 am. Thus, we unnecessarily waited the floor till 5 am for three hours with a two year old, again. Horrible management and don't give a darn about customers!! read more

I've been waiting in this line (of 3) for 15 minutes without any movement in the line nor of the people being checked in. I thought the computers were down, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It may just be employees taking their precious time. It'll be more than 30 minutes before I begin to head to my meeting. There isn't even acknowledgement of decent customer service at the moment I'm optimistic that it will change... if the two other employees behind the desk would help instead of having a chit chat. This is the worst experience I've ever had with a car rental company! We arrive at MSY over two hours late because our flight had been delayed, tired and hungry. We get to the car rental facility, get to the Dollar counter and they are closed. What?!? There's a sign though that says visit them on the third floor. We get to the third floor and no one is in either booth and there are no cars in the Dollar stalls. How are the no cars when I rented one over a month ago? At this point I'm just aggravated. I get on the phone with Dollar customer service and they are closed. What do we do now??? We end up going back downstairs to the Dollar counter to see if we can find anything and there it is, a small sign that says visit the Hertz counter. Could you make your sign any bigger??? After wasting even more time we finally get to the rental car only to find out that the safety sticker has already been broken and the gas is 7/8 full when I just paid for a full tank. What?!? We are exhausted and still have an hour to drive before we reach our destination, it's not even worth fighting about at this point. We get in the car and it is the most smoky smell ever!!! It smells like someone just lit a whole pack of cigarettes in the car. Hopefully rolling down the windows will help (it didn't). I have asthma and had the hardest time breathing in this car. I could not breathe with the windows up at all. The smell over the 3 days never went away even when I left the sun roof cracked open. That was a constant headache. On top of all of this the windshield has 3 small chips in it. How do you even rent out a car with chipped windshields? Does anyone even check your cars when they get dropped off? Flew into New Orleans to visit family, our trip was 2 10 minutes, perfect, we arrived early to get our reservation at dollar rental at airport for 9:00pm. The line was unbelievably long. At this time of night we had a baby reveal to be at within the hour. There was 1 person at counter with 30 people in line! Needless to say we didn't get to our car til 10:36, from 8:45pm. Then gave us a Ford eco sport because that's a manager special! With flying crocodile, my son is 6'0 tall legs can't stretch! Took car because didn't want to get back in line, called next morning to trade car for something bigger and the hassle was to much! No customer service these days. Dollar has a new location located at 600 Rental Blvd within easy walking distance of the baggage claim at the New Orleans airport. We arrived fairly late in the evening and pick up our bags at the Southwest baggage claim and walked down a smooth pavement to the rental car locations. At the Dollar location, our attendant was extremely friendly and helpful. She directed us to our car on another floor. We easily found our car a Ford Fusion and the attendants were helpful in directing us to New Orleans downtown. Our car had good mileage, but pretty poor visibility in the rear. In our return, it was very smooth. Overall, we were pleased with the service here. read more

RENTER BEWARE! You have to make sure you look at your contract twice before you leave this location. These people are RUNNING A SCAM! They add charges and then make it almost impossible to remove them afterward. If you try to take care of it when you return your car, you're probably going to end up being late for your flight. Customer service inside and outside were very helpful, and friendly and went beyond their duties to make me feel appreciated. My only complain was returning the vehicle, I left my brand new 3 days old beats under the driver seat, I realized I left it behind on my way back to the terminal and reported it right away giving the exact location where I left it, two weeks later and my beats are no where to be found, I came to the painful conclusion they stole my property, very disappointing to think Dollar have a bunch of thieves working for them. read more

Rented a very nice car at the New Orleans airport when we returned it today I stopped directly across the street from the rental return at the Shell station and filled the tank. When I returned the car they charged me an additional $9.29 saying I was required to supply them with a receipt for filling the tank. Total Rip Off!!! When I brought this to the staff's attention and told them I was not informed of this requirement they said I had signed for it and informed me that they would not sign anything they had not read. Perhaps they should try renting a car when exhausted from a long trip. This sounds like a very sneaky way to turn additional profit. I recently rented from them from 5/26-6/2. I prepaid via Priceline. When I got to the counter, I was told by Barbara/Brenda(sits in the last chair at the counter to your left) that the deposit would need to be an additional 76.94; I didn't have that much on my card and was told we would change my dates and to call back up later to change it back to the original return date. When I drove the car got on the highway and didn't have any windshield wiper fluid. I had to take it to another location(Pensacola Airport) to have them fill it. I called later to change the date back when I put the money on my card. When I returned I was still charged the 76.94. The lady who did the rental was there and couldn't make sense as to why I was charged extra. I have emailed the branch manager(Christopher Washington) TWICE and have not received any response. That is the only way you can contact him. If you need to rent a car, save yourself the headache and just pay the extra to a better ran company. read more

My mother rented a vehicle to travel to Florida for a family vacation. During our visit in Florida we had to go through a toll that was automated and the vehicle was automatically charged for the $1 toll. We had no option to get off the interstate and therefore had to go through it. We received a bill from Dollar for $30+ for a $2 toll. I am so disgusted that they will take advantage of people with over charging administrative fees for $2 charges. I know they don't care about customer service or their reputation because they don't even give you an option to call to dispute. I would rather pay the state directly than have to pay these fees which @visitflorida plays a part in these deceitful business practices because they know what's going on. The @FTC should investigate these business practices that takes advantage of the consumer and don't provide any additional options for non residents of these states. Didn't realize it was added on until I dropped off the car because the 'additional products' almost exactly matched my total cost of the rental. I don't normally write reviews, but after my most recent experience with Dollar Car Rental, I wanted others to know what I had experienced. I reserved my rental through Expedia, so I had already been charged prior to picking up the rental. I have comprehensive car insurance that covers car rentals and used my American Express card to pay for the rental, which also provides some coverage for rental cars. When I picked up the car, the agent who assisted me made it seem like she would not give me the rental unless I took one of their additional insurance coverages. She claimed that my personal car insurance would not cover liability. It was late and I couldn't pull up my personal car insurance information nor call my insurance agent. So, I acquiesced in taking liability coverage so that I could get my rental and end my long day of traveling! The next day, I called my insurance agent and confirmed that I had liability coverage. I then went to the closest Dollar Car rental (different from where I picked up). I explained what had happened, that I felt pressured to take the coverage or I wouldn't be able to rent the car and that I did in fact have liability coverage. So, I requested the extra insurance be taken off. The agent who helped me then was very nice and even called the manager at the pick up location. While they couldn't make an adjustment during the rental period, I was promised a refund adjustment when I returned the rental. This second agent put everything in writing on my rental agreement, then he and I signed and dated it. When I returned the car, everything went very smoothly. I received a full refund of the original extra insurance charge. Besides the hassle with the pick up agent, pick up was easy and the car was great! Drop off was also very easy and uncomplicated. So, in the end the rental was overall pretty good, but the first agent that I dealt with was horrible and said things that were blatantly not true in order to get me to take the additional insurance. Thankfully, everyone else that I dealt with after that point was very nice and helpful. read more

Where do I start with my horror story. First, I was unable to get the two cars I had initially picked from their lot for some reason. I was just told I couldn't take them. Probably maintenance issues. Then when I finally got the right vehicle, the tire blew out on me on the middle of the highway on the first day. Roadside assistance was taking forever so I put in the spare tire myself. I then drove back to the airport and made it there around 2am in hopes to exchange the car but they didn't open till 4am (they are only 24 hours for car returns but as you can tell I found that out the hard way). After sleeping in my car for two hours someone finally helped me with the exchange. He was a nice guy but he said i needed to pay $35 for the blown out tire since i didn't purchase insurance. I guess it's not really his fault since he was just following policy. But the incident wouldn't have happened had they properly maintained their vehicles. Anyway, while trying to get another car to exchange, again I was told that the car I initially wanted was not available... 1.5 hours and 2 cars later they finally had a vehicle that met the standards to take out for rent. At least that last vehicle didn't give me any issues. Never renting from here or dollar for that matter ever again UPDATE: I canceled the additional driver on my second day renting but I was still charged for the remaining days. Furthermore, I filed a claim with an outside insurance company about the blown out tires but they need the incident report plus other documents to proceed. I called dollar customer service but they said i need to contact this location to resolve my problems but they do not pick up the phone. It has been two weeks so far, and yes I left plenty of voicemails, but received no call back from this location. read more

Exemplary service! I was all-around impressed from beginning to end. Shuttle: At the New Orleans airport, all of the off-site car rental shuttles are located in parking spaces in the main level of the parking garage. All car rental companies are located in the same offsite lot. As soon as I found the Dollar Rental shuttle in the parking garage, a driver named Ira escorted me to the Dollar Rental lot immediately. He did not make me wait until he filled the shuttle with other passengers. He carried my bags for me, drove smoothly and was very polite. Pickup: Once onsite, I was the only customer and was assisted immediately. Dollar Rental has an automated Driver's License reader and touch screen for the paperwork portion of the process. While the automated "paperwork" was being completed, another employee pulled my rental car around front. The entire process from departing the shuttle to being inside the rental car took five minutes. Unheard of! Car: I reserved an economy car. It was in good condition. It was one of the new energy saving cars and I did notice the car rolled back a bit as if it were a stick shift if I did not keep my foot square on the brake. But other than that it was great. Most economy cars do not have automatic locks but this car did, plus it had Sirius radio. Special Surprise: On my way to return the car, my GPS didn't recognize the 100 Rental Blvd return address as indicated on the receipt which made me nervous since I was running late to catch my flight. Lo and behold, the directions to the rental car return area were securely fastened to the passenger side floor mats in large letters that could be read from the drivers' side seat. Ingenious! This was very helpful and unexpected. Return: The return process was simple and easy. Note: you must show your gas receipt upon returning the car. Shuttle and big kudos: As I mentioned, I was running late and I was concerned I would miss my flight. The shuttle pulled in as soon as I had returned the rental car and I informed the shuttle driver, Kenneth, of my concern and even though he thought I would arrive in plenty of time, he took my concerns seriously and insisted he would get me to the airport in time to catch my flight and he drove without hesitation and without making me wait for additional passengers. In my opinion I was cutting it close and Kenneth definitely assisted me in catching my flight on time and I am very appreciative! Superb job by all! read more

Lazy employees paired with dirty cars is a bad combination for a rental agency. But that is what you get with the Dollar at Moisant airport in New Orleans. The employees clearly do not care. They do not get up to inspect, nor clean the cars apparently. The car I got had about half of a large bag of Funyons all over the floors and under the seats. I made sure they understood this and they said don't worry about it. So I got to drive the Funyonmobile for a couple days. At least the car didn't break down or anything like that. Dollar is cheap and so you shouldn't expect good things from them. read more

There customer service person started off with an attitude of why we were there...(visiting a college & friends) just so happened that this was the weekend of hurricanes Nate was to arrive, but since it wasn't projected you arrive till after we left for home - shouldn't be a problem! However Nate arrived earlier than expected our flights were cancelled and we needed to make plan b! Now we have to drive home (14+ hrs). According to our paper work the additional fees wouldn't be that bad! However they decided to try to charge us $800+ to change! (Yes they had a rental at the airport where we left it at!) Worst experience ever with rental car company. Checked in to get my full size Suburban for 7 passengers and they were out and gave us a smaller size Tahoe with no luggage capacity. They promised to call when a Suburban would be returned the following day. They never called and we ended up calling the national number 6 times. They also gave us a local number which we found is bogus because they have no direct local numbers. Customer service was pathetic. We eventually called roadside assistance and spoke with rep named Deanna who was very helpful and the only thing positive about our experience with Dollar. This started out as one of the worst rental car experiences ever. I rented a car that I knew something was wrong with but they insisted it was fine. It didn't make it 12 hours and had to be switched out in Lafayette, which was a nightmare. Little did I know they were charging me the vehicle up charge because the same class that I had rented was not available so they put me in the next thing they had. When I brought the vehicle back and checked in my total was $300 over what was expected. When I started to panic, Richard's gift of amazing customer service kicked in and he assured me he would do whatever it took to make it right. I guess there's a reason why Dollar had the lowest rates. I made a mistake by renting with them. There was no line when we picked up our car upon our arrival. I had rented the car online and it was under my name. The employee asked if I wanted to include my boyfriend as a driver, so naturally, I said yes because I don't want to do all the driving. I also bought insurance just in case, and boy, am I glad I did! Anyway, things were going well so far, until I was asked to initial to confirm that I read and agreed with everything. Now, I don't know about you, but I like to read everything before I sign or initial anything. And I'm glad I did, because I noticed that they billed me for the extra driver. Now, I wouldn't have been so annoyed had the employee told me that they charge for additional drivers, but noooo, he didn't tell me. I guess they're not required to let their customers know of additional charges, or perhaps, we're just supposed to instinctively know that. Anyway, I had him remove my bf from driving. We left the rental and got our rental. Now, somehow I managed to get a nail on one of the tires while in Biloxil, MS. The bf put the spare on...in...the...insane..humidity and I called their customer service for assistance. But of course, it would've been too easy for me to get through right away. I called and called and called and finally got through. They transferred me to roadside assistance who told me that they'll replace my car with another one if I drive it to the closest airport. Except, they didn't have any cars available until later and for me to call later to confirm. Well, I called them later and it was the same old routine, call and call and call and call until I finally got through to roadside assistance, who put me on hold for over 20 minutes to see if they have a car available. Of course, there were no cars available, which means I'm stuck driving on a spare. Kinda dangerous driving with that from MS to LA, if you ask me. I asked the roadside assistance operator what I should do, to which he had no answer but to tell me to have a good day. I decided to take it to the local tire center to get the tire plugged and drove it back to LA. I returned the car, which took almost an hour of waiting. Boy, it's a good thing we made sure we gave ourselves plenty of time to catch our flight! The lady was smiling and friendly to me until I told her about my tire situation and how I got it plugged, to which her expression did a 180. She had to get another guy to help us, as she's not trained to handle my case. Anyway, the other guy told us that we weren't supposed to get the tire plugged because it'd be dangerous for the other person should something happen to the tire. I was supposed to have gotten the tire replaced and paid for it out of my own pocket. Really? That wasn't what I was told my the roadside assistance. I told him that I bought insurance, to which he then said that it's taken care of. I then asked if I could get reimbursed for the out of pocket money I paid for the plug. Of course, he said that I'd have to handle that with my credit card comapny because that's not his concern. By that point, I've had enough. I just wanted out of there. Never again will I rent from Dollar. They didn't tell me that adding an additional driver was going to cost money. I had a very hard time getting through to them and when I did, they put me on hold and then couldn't help me. They weren't able to reimburse me for getting the tire plugged. OMG!! Customer service was horrible. I had booked my car thru Expedia and was quoted around $200 and change. When I finally arrived at 11pm after traveling across country for like 10hrs and two kids and pregnant, the counter guy hands me a ticket that says it's est. around close to $500. He tells me to sign. I made a comment of, $500? Why so much? He replies it's an est. it can change once you go upstairs to get the car. I go upstairs and was told to pick out a car. Picked out a car and told I could drive away. So that's what I did. The next day I look at the paper work and realized I was charge two different insurance fees, which was more then the car rental. I call customer and was told to go to the location to get it taken off. So I go back to the airport on my first day of vacation. Then the same guy tells me he can't help me, he gets up walks away and gets on his phone. Comes back to tell me he called his manager. A male and female from Hertz comes over I explained what happened. He pulls the ticket I signed and tells me, you see this, he went over it with you and you signed it. My reply, He didn't go over it. Then he repeats, he went over it and you signed so u agree to it. I again stated, he did not go over it and just told me it was an est, and that it could changed. He then said he couldn't do anything to take the charge off. Then told me I can come back on Monday to speak to Ryan the district manager to "see" if he could help. Remind you, I'm on vacay and hurricane Harvey is going on so the weather isn't the greatest. So i stated I would return the car because I did not want to pay $500 on a rental car. The female who had came then asked the counter guy if he was ok. Huh??? I was extremely nice, why wouldn't he be ok? They were the ones who were using a condescending tone with me. Never again will I rent from dollar or hertz!! It wasn't even the fact they couldn't assist me but the way acted and spoke to me. Why are you mad? I was the one being screwed over and was being nice. I arrived at NOLA Airport on Christmas night expecting to pick up my rental car at Dollar, reserved and paid for through Expedia a full 2 months earlier. Lo and behold as I stood in line with about a dozen other customers, Dollar announced that they were completely OUT of vehicles. No one of authority was available to handle customer concerns or provide any reliable information about whether we would receive a car the next morning. The best response we received is that they could "probably" get us a car early the next day. Needless to say most of us were looking for other options or another way out of NOLA at 11:00 PM on Christmas day. A refund by Expedia doesn't begin to satisfy the mismanagement of Dollar. The counter clerk actually stated that they have no way of knowing how many vehicles outside agencies rent on Dollar's behalf. I rented a car from dollar because I had to rush into town for a funeral. HUGE MISTAKE by not researching the company first as they have a history of a bad reputation. They are the worst. The price that was given to me online was of course way lower than the price they told me would be my final total, which at first was fine. Due to bad weather my flight was rescheduled so I extended my car reservation. I called and had it changed and made sure they gave me the final total with fees and taxes included. Upon returning the car of course the total on my receipt was not what they told me over the phone. I went to the desk as instructed to ask about the discrepancy. I asked if I could have a detailed print out of my bill as the receipt was full of abbreviations that only employees could understand. The woman said "This is detailed, I don't know how much more detail you want". I asked her if she would review the receipt with me and explain where that extra charge came from. She mumbled and barely explained and didn't seem to truly understand it at first, then she tried explaining and I wasn't understanding because of her wording. She had a serious attitude and when I tried explaining it back to make sure I understood she said, "I don't know how much more you want me to explain it to you." The conclusion was that a fee had been lied about and added at the end and she could care less about it. Then she turned around and started ignoring me to basically tell me that she was done with me. I asked for a manager and she said, "He is dealing with someone else, you gotta wait till he gets back down here." Mind you she attempted to call him and he didn't have his phone so he would have no way of knowing I was waiting to talk to him. There was no line behind me so her running to go and get him wouldn't have been that hard. The whole time her coworker who was doing nothing but lounging against the counter and listening to our conversation just stood there when she could've gone to page the manager also. They did not care about their jobs at all and seemed like they had better things to be doing - mind you these were grown women. Overall Dollar tacks on extra fees and lies when you ask about them up front. Their employees are rude and incompetent and come from the bottom of the barrel. They are useless. Don't rent from here. You aren't saving a dime and the "customer service" will only ruin your trip. read more
