I was truly hoping to have an amazing sushi night with my wife. Reservations are a must so I made some nearly 2 weeks in advance. We showed up to the restaurant with high expectations because of the yelp rating and all the great comments. My wife is gluten free (not by choice, believe me) and I read in the comments how accommodating they were to people with GF allergies. One thing that is nice is they let us open our local wine from one of the wineries around the corner. Now here comes the reason I have it 1 star (which I rarely do). Our waitress (an older blonde dyed hair lady) was super friendly up until the point my wife kindly asked which items could be made gluten-free. The lady's demeanor changed immediately and she acted inconvenienced that we would ask for real crab instead of imitation crab(which actually has wheat in it). She had zero knowledge about which items could be made gluten-free, didn't even bother to ask the cook or another staff for their opinion, which is what we have seen in the past with other places. I actually felt the younger man there would have been a better waiter as I can tell he was more knowledgeable and had a better attitude in difficult situations(like turning people away because of the room size) The sushi came out and it was presented really well, however, tasted horrible. Now I understand it was ordered gluten-free, but that is where the restaurant can truly shine and be creative or at least suggest a roll that is delicious gluten-free. As everyone knows, with sushi, outside of the fish being fresh, the thing that truly makes sushi great is the RICE. The rice was mushy and had no flavor. All in all, the only thing we enjoyed was each other's company and the wine. In my opinion, save your money and try another restaurant in town or nearby Angels Camp. read more

I simply wanted a bowl of soup after a weekend snowboarding with my boyfriend at Bear Valley. On our drive home we stopped in Murphys and found Doke Sushi. Oh how I wish we'd just gone on a little further to Copper. The experience was pretty awful overall, though, the food itself was okay. After being seated at the sushi counter, it took the one waitress who was working a long time just to acknowledge us. Then she finally came over and took our drink order only. We had to wait a very long time to receive drinks and even order food. Noticing the one sushi chef still hadn't completed the 3 plates for the couple next to us, we knew it would be a while before Brad received his roll and I got my soup. Wrong. My soup came out almost immediately!! I commented to the waitress that I'd like to receive my meal at the same time, and she mentioned that the soup was very hot and needed to cool. I took a bite and asked if they'd mind just holding on to it until his food was ready. 15 minutes later he got his plate, and I waited briefly while they heated my soup back up. The soup was ultimately kind of disappointing (but his roll was awesome!) Thai Iced Tea was only $2 but was really weakly brewed. It should never take an hour to get your one or two item dinner in a restaurant that only seats 20 people total. Oishii! My man and I came in for his birthday dinner. Started with the seaweed salad which was delicious and just the right texture (I usually don't like seaweed salad, but theirs may be the best I've had). We enjoyed the smoothness of the house sake. Doke sushi has a nice selection of inspired specialty rolls. We ordered the calaveras, dragon roll, and grasshopper. The calaveras roll was the favorite! Didn't much care for the grasshopper roll. Next time I'll be trying the non-sushi menu items, since the only other way I get my Japanese food now is to make it at home. The dining area is rather small, but decor is cute & modern and service is fast. I've heard people scoff at the idea of raw fish in the mountains, but it's only 3 hours from the coast! I love love love Doke. They have such delicious rolls and they're more unique and have some creativity. My favorites are the unicorn roll and the Poseidon roll. I guess everyone that is give this place 4 or 5 stars must have a dead palate. Let's start with the pros: Its a cute small place in Murphy off Main st. The service and servers were good. We received our food in a timely manner. We were a party of four with no reservations, and we were seated immediately. The menu selection and drink selection was good. Cons: It doesn't taste like any Japanese food I had experienced ever... in a bad way. We ordered the crunchy roll, the calveras, the secret, and udon. The udon was flat on flavor. The noodles were done correctly, but the soup was oddly thick and tasteless. The beef that was added with the udon was chewy with no flavor. The crunchy roll felt like rice crispy's had a baby with a Nigri and just called their inventiom crunchy roll. The secret roll was disappointing. Salmon seemed farm by the color alone. The rice once again was mushy. There was no wasabi at all. The more I added soy sauce, the more disappointed I got. If you currently live in San Francisco, San Jose, or Oakland... skip this place.... but if you're from Murphy, this place is literally the best Sushi place in Murphy. read more

It would be easy to say that Doke is the best sushi around, as it's the only sushi. However, it is truly fantastic sushi. I've lived and traveled all over the globe and I always enjoy my meals at Doke. I make a point of Sunday dinner from Doke so that I have leftovers on Monday when they are closed. I happened to be in the San Andeas area & was looking for a sushi place for lunch. This place popped up closest to where we were. It was a tad bit hard to find because they don't have a sign outside but that's ok. The place is small & cozy but it was perfect. We ordered a small platter of nigiri, green & yellow curry & some tiger rolls. Their music is what I have in my playlist so that's a plus! Everything was good! Our server was excellent! He was nice & friendly & he knew what he was selling. Ordered the large sampler, suppose to come with 2 of every fish. The price was 30$, so i expected what we ordered. Got back to the hotel, multiple ( half) of the fish were missing. We called to tell them, they apologized and said they didn't have the other fish. Okay, but why didn't they tell us this when we went to pick it up, and why did we have to pay in full. The only remedy they offered, "well, you guys can come in". Come in and what though? Because they never said they'd give us some of our cash back or they never said they'd give us extra fish. I ate here over the weekend. First of all, as you will read, the place does not accommodate many, a reservation is recommended- especially given how busy Murphys has become. We did not have one, but they put us on a list. After walking the streets a few minutes we received a call that a table had become available - a great service! The menu has some of the most common items you would expect. The cucumber salad and seaweed appetizers did not disappoint. We also tried the Calaveras roll and the Cherry blossom which tasted delightful. The rolls with raw albacore were also of good quality. The wine selection is nonexistent, and the server even recommended against ordering the one red offered. We instead opted for a bottle of unfiltered saki, which at the cost of $18 was well worth it (I even took a half bottle home). The ambience could leave a bit to be desired. The tables are plain black and the decor does not make any remarkable contribution. The walls are just plain gray. Doke delivers on providing the quality with great service that is worth some trouble if you're looking for sushi in the Murphy's area. read more

Sushi Doke is an amazing find! We looked in the window while walking around Murphys. We came back at dinner time. Luckily they were able to seat us without a reservation. 10 people were turned away soon after because they were booked up. The Cherry Blossom Roll and their potstickers and out standing. Love sushi? So I get with all this covid stuff it may be hard to still run things properly as far as the menu and food items available. However, they can at least make up for it with customer service and better communication. I love sashimi, so naturally I asked about the "large plate, 2 of each item" in the sashimi and Nigeri section of the menu....I asked the waitress...(Morgan) which sashimi pieces where included in the large plate option, she responded saying all of them where thats in that menu section. When she came with my plate and my bfs plate (which was wrong too) but it included only 2 of each item of 5 of the sashimi options. When I asked her about it....her response is what killed me lol she said "ohhhh yeaa I'm really sorry about that, he (the chef, I'm assuming) kinda just puts whatever he feels like putting on the plate". First of all, if that's the case, then that should've been communicated, second, they shouldn't put in the menu "2 of each item" cause technically it's not "each" its anywhere from 2 of 4-6 sashimi pieces listed (there was 11 pieces listed). Next, my bf ordered fresh eel which he asked if it came fresh...it didn't. It came cooked and drizzled with a ton of barbecue sauce type...so again not communicated properly. I would like to come back to this place because some of the other sushi/sashimi we ordered was pretty good. Our to go meal: (3/23/18) -Big Trees Roll -Sesame Chicken Bento Box (with miso salad, California roll and tempura medley) -Ahi Plate Sadly, I can only give this take out meal 2 stars. 2 stars for the earth friendly to go boxes and for the decent ahi. Please look at photos. - Big Trees Roll with Real Crab ($17.00) Inside was mostly a peppery fried batter taste and hardly got any flavor from the fish. -Sesame Chicken Bento Box ($15.00) The amount of chicken was despicable. In a Bento Box there is usually a whole breast of chicken sit into strips and this meal provided what seems to be a single strip cut into pieces and fried. There was no sesame flavor whatsoever in the chicken and it was a dry as a bone. -Miso Salad (part of Bento Box) This was basically a bag of iceberg mixed greens and the miso dressing was very mayonnaise-tasing. -Tempura (paBento Box) Decent selection of veggies - onion, broccoli, possible beet or potato - shrimp. Tempura sauce tasted like a watered down soy vs. the sweet and savory tempura sauce at most sushi restaurants. -Ahi Plate ($14.00) Look at pictures for the size of the steak. First I would like to say that if you're going to have more than a couple people or you're driving from far away give him a call and let them know you're coming so they can save you a spot it is a tiny restaurant. If you do end up having to wait it's totally worth it. Was talking to my husband about what to have for dinner when I happened to stumble across this restaurant, didn't have any plans so we figured what the heck will make the 45-minute drive and give it a try. Oh it was so worth it, the sushi was delicious. So good that we talked about it all the way back home. We will definitely be revisiting this place again. Only the best dang sushi in Calaveras and Tuolumne County! I love this place. We've been coming here since they opened and years later, this is still our favorite place to eat out. The owner is nice, and most of the staff is too. Matt, one of the servers, is awesome. He is always so friendly and attentive. At one point they put two dishes in front of us and then got distracted leaving the third just sitting on the counter.
