Went for Fathers Day lunch with a reservation. Get to the front and the girl working there doesn't ask for a name, gives a cold shoulder and seems bothered to seat us. Not too enthused when we asked if we could sit on a nicer table that was open. Server seemed like he was really new to the job and couldn't explain the menu items to me. The food runner was rude when I asked him for hot sauce (I get it, I should ask the server, but he didnt need to be rude). I noticed throughout this torture of a lunch, that the ample staff and manager (or appeared to be), were all pretty relaxed and having good conversations, while we suffered crappy service. I almost did not want to post a review for this place because I do not want to share it! From the servers, to the food, to the drinks, everything was so phenomenal! My friend goes very often and asked a few of us to join for her birthday, it's officially one of my new favorite restaurants. I arrived after happy hour was ending but our server still gave me happy hour prices, and gave me suggestions on what to eat. I'm a happy camper! So, we ordered takeout because there's still a pandemic raging. Our food was delivered fairly quickly. It took about an hour from ordering to on my plate. The delivery person was friendly and stuck to the guidelines of viewing my ID for the mixed drink. We've never eaten here before but we live only a few blocks away. Overall, the experience was solid. Here are specifics: The fried chicken wings were really good with the sweet chili sauce. We had to pour it on ourselves but it was great and I would definitely order these again. My partner loved the shaken beef. He said "oh yeah, this is really good" so that's all the detail I have on that. I ordered the fried pork dumplings which tasted like any other kind of dumpling but the spicy sauce it was served with was great. So yes, this place makes a really good sauce. Flavorful, packed with Vietnamese spices and traditional flavors. It's a punch, not a gentle sprinkle so go with your tastebuds. I ordered the Char Kuey Teow which was really good, just enough sweet, perfectly cooked flat noodles. Adding extra shrimp is a good bet. It's pricey but probably worth it. The sweet sausage is a fantastic add. I would order this again too. Lastly, my mixed drink was yummmmmmmm. It was sweet so don't order the daiquiri unless you are in the mood for a strong and sweet drink! I haven't had a cocktail all pandemic and was in desperate need of one and this one hit the spot! I'm a Doi Moi fan. They Doi Asian fusion better than most in this town--and they aren't hesitant to try new dishes. I was really excited to try the Sri Lankan guest chef pop-up held for 2 days. Grabbed some friends to join, and maximize the amount we ordered! Some of the menu items ("hoppers") weren't something we had a point of reference to understand. But our fab server stepped in to assist and explain. Ultimately, we ended up ordering: Jackfruit curry Goat biryiani Chicken curry Coconut roti Mango chutney Lotus root and cassava chips Pickled eggplant Rose tea cake Non-alcoholic drinks (teas) for the table This was enough to cover 4 moderately hungry people. We clocked in around $40pp with tip. Flavors weren't as spicy or rich as I had anticipated--were they softened for Western taste buds? But still yummy and we certainly left full. 4 stars both for the lightness of flavor and the prices. I'm not sure why 2 tablespoons of average mango chutney is $3. A single roti for $3 is a bit more understandable. Either way if the regional chef pop-up continues, prices are worth watching! read more

I got the Stir-Fried Rice Noodles and they were OK - a bit too salty and no unique flavor. I've had the Drunken Noodles before and they are good, but you can get the same quality or better from any average Thai restaurant so you're really paying for the ambiance. Our server was doing her best but forgot to bring us a fork after we asked for one and gave us a daiquiri we didn't order, which we were ultimately charged for. It would have been better if she wrote our orders down instead of trying to remember everything. My friends and I were there to celebrate his birthday (party of 5) and ordered quite a significant amount of fare - starters, cocktails, entrees and dessert. The food was fine but extremely overpriced--yet, this wasn't the worst part. Our waiter was unjustifiably repugnant and rude, and as we endured this unacceptable and unexplained scorn throughout the evening, I assured myself that I could reflect my dissatisfaction with his deplorable service in the (what should be earned NOT EXPECTED) tip on our bill. And yet, in what essentially amounted to robbery, we received the bill only to find that 20% TIP WAS AUTOMATICALLY INCLUDED. Without notification, justification or confirmation. Which entirely explained our waiter's laissez-fare attitude and how we could be treated with such foulness - because he knew he would get an assured 20% unearned and undeserved kickback off our large bill. When did the restaurant culture in DC reach such a new low as to "expect" and not earn high marks for service? What is the function of a tip at this point? This speaks to a greater fundamental problem with the practice of "tip included" in the US, but in this instance, it should have been called a "penalty" for dining out to accurately reflect its form, as opposed to a "tip" for celebrating the experience and those who bring it. I would not recommend this establishment, approach it with caution or insist your tip not be automatic for large parties so you can be free to express your own satisfaction via the tip for how your service dining experience was. read more

Doi Moi means "innovation" in Vietnamese. This restaurant's name does NOT disappoint. The menu is concise, but rest assured that every item is well-thought-out and spectacular. My significant other ordered their beef pho at least 1 day every week for a year. The service is friendly and spectacular-- Ive had multiple hosts remember me from visits which are weeks apart. I enjoy the flash fried beef jerky, bao buns, spring rolls, and pho. You cannot go wrong with a bahn mi sandwich either !! I would be remiss to not mention the speakeasy downstairs, or the spectacular daiquiris. A unique drink selection awaits any borderline alcoholic. One fire dish while the rest were mediocre. The stir fried rice noodles were perfection as far as the noodles and shrimp. My date thought the noodles tasted fresh enough to be made in house and I thought the flat wide noodles had almost a butter-like texture. The skrimps, as my date said, were like candies of the sea. However, I would've liked more smokiness or umami from the whole dish. The appetizers were pure spiciness. The papaya salad lacked saltiness/flavor but made up for it in crisp fresh bites. It did not taste very authentic. My date enjoyed the shishito peppers. In between apps and entree we had the bao sampler plate which can never really be done wrong. However the first initial bite screamed mayo. I really enjoyed the crispy tofu in the mildy sweet and soft bun. The pork belly was sweet and fatty. One thing I was dissapointed about was the thai iced tea. I want a thai iced tea that'll put me into a sweet coma but I tried the vegan sweetener option which was most likely a coconut based sweetener that just did not do the job even with an extra shot of it. Went there Saturday night group of 12 . Ordered the crispy Pig ears and Mango chili salt with two bottles of red wine . My friends liked the crispy pig years I didn't care for it. Loved the Mango . Dinner we got whole snapper which I thought was fried a bit too much . There char Kuey Teow was well made . Authentic Malaysian taste . Grilled pork ribs were the best . Also ordered Jackfruit curry . I personally didn't care much for the curry . Very bland should be little bit more sweet and spicy snd topped with fresh cilantro .
