My brother was in town visiting and we had such a great time at Doi Moi. We ate dinner and then went to the speakeasy downstairs afterward. The ambiance was great and the food was amazing with such great flavors (the Chicken Dumplings are the best). My waiter Thiya was awesome! She was so attentive and quick. This Winter Restaurant Week meal was delicious! The duck roll was fantastic on its own, but was served with hoisin sauce. The curry was a teensy bit too sweet for my taste, but it was complex and delicious, and complemented the beef and potatoes well. The strawberry soft serve was phenomenal. I wouldn't recommend mixing it with the chocolate banana ovaltine (which was also really chocolatey and delicious). I also tried the chickpea tofu (polenta-like in texture, reminded me of chickpea fries), mango sticky rice (the mango wasn't ripe enough and the sticky rice was too salty) and the papaya salad (very fresh, bright and spicy!). Our service was also great - one of my friends, being a vegetarian and participating in restaurant week, had some limitations, and the manager allowed her to sub in a starter. In all seriousness, this was the best food of my entire life. Friend and I are trying a different cuisines around the city every month and thought we would try doi moi. Best decision ever. My friend decided to take me here for my birthday this past weekend (of course she was unaware that I previously visited and did not have the best experience) Sadly, my birthday experience was not great and this was only because our waiter was the worst and failed to give attention to customers, except when he had to present us with the check. Napkins, extra cutlery, special sauces, water, name it...we had to reach to other tables to get it. The worst! Of course I was planning to give them another try after being contacted by one of the owners, who btw actually did not follow through on her message. But hey! I've been to doi moi several times. They are a fun place for a happy hour - we enjoyed the vegetarian sampler, served in an adorably stacked steam basket. We were in the mood for something delicious yet healthy, and we decided that Vietnamese would fit the bill nicely. Found Doi Moi online, and off we went. That was our first good decision. The food was excellent, the staff friendly and accommodating, and the casual contemporary vibe was just what we were looking for. Our second good decision was to rely on our server Stella's recommendations when it came to ordering. She led us to the whole fried rockfish, which was exactly as she described, crispy on the outside, and fall off the bone succulent once you cut open. Her next suggestion was their Viet-influenced take on lo Mein, which was a revelation. I seriously can't recall a time when I enjoyed lo Mein more. We then split a bowl of Pho that was excellent as well. Over the last few years, I've cut my sodium intake, so most of the time, Pho just tastes too salty for me. That was not the case here. So it was not only delicious, but it just seemed healthier than usual. That alone may make Doi Moi our go-to spot for Pho going forward. Went for Fathers Day lunch with a reservation. Get to the front and the girl working there doesn't ask for a name, gives a cold shoulder and seems bothered to seat us. Not too enthused when we asked if we could sit on a nicer table that was open. Server seemed like he was really new to the job and couldn't explain the menu items to me. The food runner was rude when I asked him for hot sauce (I get it, I should ask the server, but he didnt need to be rude). I noticed throughout this torture of a lunch, that the ample staff and manager (or appeared to be), were all pretty relaxed and having good conversations, while we suffered crappy service. Wow. This is the best Asian fusion I've had in DC. Love that the restaurant does a mix of representing actual dishes from Southeast Asian countries and of creating new fusion dishes. I have been really wanting to try this place and finally went with a friend after we finished working in the hospital. We came in our scrubs and when we asked for a table the waitress was super rude and condescending. Not sure if it was because we were underdressed or if she was having a bad day so we decided we would just go sit at the outside bar. Honestly would not go back to this place (because of the hostess) but the staff at the bar was so friendly and happy that they were able to change my mind. We got the duck roll - which was delicious and the chicken skewers for the appetizers. I got the beef curry and my friend got the rice noodles (both were sooooo delicious). We both ended up ordering the sticky mango rice for dessert because I was unwilling to share that. The only thing I will say is that it's very little mangos compared to the other places where I have have had the same dessert. We don't get to venture into DC very often and finally had a chance today. We decided to try Doi Moi on a whim and were a bit disappointed. :/ I am Vietnamese American and am very acquainted with the flavors of the cuisine. 1. Thé waiters overall were nice and helpful. We were put off by the host who greeted us. He seemed annoyed that we did not have a reservation, mind you this was 1130 on a Sunday and the restaurant was 50% empty. Perhaps it was just a mix up in how we read his body language and tone, but it definitely could have been more welcoming. 2. We ordered the lemongrass chicken bowl - there was ONE piece of chicken. ONE!!! The flavors were lacking in lemongrass, which I imagine would have been more pronounced if chicken were included in the dish. ONE 1inch piece of chicken!!!! (Sorry I am having a hard time letting that one go) 3. The fried spring rolls, which was their version of cha gio for any Vietnamese foodies, was quite salty. I've had the Drunken Noodles before and they are good, but you can get the same quality or better from any average Thai restaurant so you're really paying for the ambiance. Our server was doing her best but forgot to bring us a fork after we asked for one and gave us a daiquiri we didn't order, which we were ultimately charged for. Doi Moi has been on my bookmarks list for way too long and based on my experience, it should've never made it on that list. I've always wondered what their food tasted like since the decor looked beautiful from the outside in. My friend and I were there on a rainy Saturday and were told by the hostess to pick a seat at the bar or in front of the "kitchen" since the actual dining room was supposedly busy even though it looked pretty empty. But that is still not the reason for my 2 stars. We decided to sit by their kitchen, watching them cook the food right in front of us. First thing I disliked was employees wiping around the grill with a soapy towel - umm you're around food so that's a no-no. But it gets worse: we're digging into our food - which was quite average tasting - and what do we see? We see an employee pick up a scrub brush from their dirty FLOOR, scrub their grill with it and then proceed to grill chicken satay on that SAME grill. What??! How is this restaurant still open? I had an excellent experience at Doi Moi. I had a reservation for 6:30 outside, but the weather had turned very cold and unpleasant, so I asked if we could be seated inside instead. The hostess said she could do so, so my friends and I did not have to brave the cold. Once we were seated, our server came by quickly and took our orders. We must have made her life easy by all ordering the same thing, the Char Kuey Teow. It was delicious - full of a variety of flavors, including a nice kick. I must have liked it more than my friends because I was the only one who didn't ask for a to go container. Doi Moi means "innovation" in Vietnamese. This restaurant's name does NOT disappoint. The menu is concise, but rest assured that every item is well-thought-out and spectacular. My significant other ordered their beef pho at least 1 day every week for a year. The service is friendly and spectacular-- Ive had multiple hosts remember me from visits which are weeks apart. I enjoy the flash fried beef jerky, bao buns, spring rolls, and pho. You cannot go wrong with a bahn mi sandwich either !! I came to Doi Moi with three friends for brunch and had a great experience. The inside of the space itself is really nice with a lot of natural lighting and a cool marketplace where you can buy various ingredients if you wanted to cook Vietnamese food at home. I ordered the bittersweet slow drip iced coffee which is a Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk and it was VERY good. Definitely a highlight of my meal. I also ordered a mango mimosa which was pretty good. For food, I ordered the breakfast Bahn Mi which is apparently a popular choice! It was good, and way bigger than I expected it to be! Very well seasoned and a hearty breakfast option. My group also ended up ordering the coconut beignets, and while I don't usually like coconut or coconut flavored things, the beignets were great! My group also happened to go the night before for cocktails in their downstairs lounge and we had a great experience there as well! The drinks were great and the space was very cool. **SRI LANKAN MENU** My husband and I came here for dinner for night one of the special Sri Lankan menu. My husband's entire family is from Sri Lanka, so we were really excited. Some things we really liked, but a lot of the experience left us confused and disappointed. The biggest issue, and why I decided to go as low as 2*, is the timing of serving the food. I was extremely surprised when we were told upon ordering that the food would come as it's ready. Excuse me?? This isn't Sri Lankan tapas! Rice and roti needs to come with the curries! That's how this works! Instead we got our roti well before our curries and, much worse, the rice came long AFTER the crab curry arrived (there was a big gap between the crab curry and the chicken curry). Please don't charge me 50% more than this food should cost and then fail to hit such fundamentals. Winners: Crab Curry, Duck Egg Hopper, and the Coconut Roti. By far the best thing we had was the Maryland Blue Crab Curry. This dish tasted like a genuine Sri Lankan curry, and the crab was cooked perfectly. My favorite way to eat it was with the Coconut Roti, because the latter's sweetness and chewy texture complemented the crab perfectly (but $3 for one roti?!). We also really loved the Duck Egg Hopper; the duck egg yolk was so rich and luscious! My husband was disappointed that it didn't come with anything on the side in terms of sauces, which he said it how it would normally be served. I didn't have that expectation, and the flavor and texture were wonderful. Avoid: Chicken Curry. The sauce was too thin, and there were bones and other inedibles, but mostly this wasn't a Sri Lankan dish(!). Though I didn't have it, I also suggest skipping the biriyani, which is another Indian item rather than Sri Lankan. Also skip the banana funnel cake desert, because it doesn't taste at all of banana. Meh: Rice (too soft), String Hopper (blah and way overpriced), and Samosa (needed more flavor). Overall we didn't feel confident the chef actually knew Sri Lankan food very well. read more
