I have been really wanting to try this place and finally went with a friend after we finished working in the hospital. We came in our scrubs and when we asked for a table the waitress was super rude and condescending. Not sure if it was because we were underdressed or if she was having a bad day so we decided we would just go sit at the outside bar. Honestly would not go back to this place (because of the hostess) but the staff at the bar was so friendly and happy that they were able to change my mind. The drinks that were recommended to us were really good. We also got the meat sampler was good but I think there were other plates on the menu that people enjoyed more. read more

Doi Moi has been on my bookmarks list for way too long and based on my experience, it should've never made it on that list. I've always wondered what their food tasted like since the decor looked beautiful from the outside in. My friend and I were there on a rainy Saturday and were told by the hostess to pick a seat at the bar or in front of the "kitchen" since the actual dining room was supposedly busy even though it looked pretty empty. But that is still not the reason for my 2 stars. We decided to sit by their kitchen, watching them cook the food right in front of us. First thing I disliked was employees wiping around the grill with a soapy towel - umm you're around food so that's a no-no. But it gets worse: we're digging into our food - which was quite average tasting - and what do we see? We see an employee pick up a scrub brush from their dirty FLOOR, scrub their grill with it and then proceed to grill chicken satay on that SAME grill. What??! How is this restaurant still open? Also our service was super slow. I will definitely not be going back. read more

Service is so inconsistent and usually not that great. Food could be better at all. Depends on who's cooking! To Go orders usually cold on weekend brunch time. Rude manager hopefully he's gone. The place used to be my back up kitchen but there is much better Asian food in the neighborhood. Bar downstairs is pretty cool depending upon who's working behind the bar. I had an excellent experience at Doi Moi. I had a reservation for 6:30 outside, but the weather had turned very cold and unpleasant, so I asked if we could be seated inside instead. The hostess said she could do so, so my friends and I did not have to brave the cold. Once we were seated, our server came by quickly and took our orders. We must have made her life easy by all ordering the same thing, the Char Kuey Teow. It was delicious - full of a variety of flavors, including a nice kick. I must have liked it more than my friends because I was the only one who didn't ask for a to go container. I'm sure other menu items are great, but if you're not sure what to get, I highly recommend the Char Kuey Teow! read more

This is the first time I ate at Doi Moi since they recently revamped the menu. I remember when I previously ate there, they had delicious whole fish, and that's what I was hoping to get this time. It was a wonderful experience of the senses! Our server was very sweet, patient, and attentive (I wish I remembered her name, but she was young and had a long ponytail) and walked us through the entire menu, offering guidance on favorites and popular dishes. We ordered the beef jerky and chicken skewers to share. The beef "jerky" consists of richly marinated hanger steak strips that are flash fried -- WOW. This was packed with flavor and the right texture. The dipping sauce was also delicious. While I'm not usually a huge fan of chicken thighs, the skewers were really well-cooked and didn't have the "strong" flavor that thighs can sometimes have. Choosing our main dishes was tough, but we managed to narrow it down (also thanks to our server). Our table ordered the fried snapper, the steamed haddock curry, the duck, and the branzino. Lemongrass coconut rice on the side. I tasted all of the dishes and was impressed with the complexity (but at the time, humbling simplicity -- thank you Netflix for my new culinary critique vocabulary) and unique flavors of each. The snapper is worth digging into with your hands ("animal style," as they called it), and dipping into the delicious tangy sweet sauce. The duck's presentation was lovely. The branzino was simple but delicious. My favorite was definitely the haddock curry -- simple, savory, sweet, delicious. Something I'd like to try to recreate at home for sure. For dessert, we ordered the key lime pie, but none of really liked it. The flavors tasted a bit artificial and we did not enjoy the custard-y taste and texture. However, they have many other options to choose from and next time, I would like to try the filled donuts. I came to Doi Moi with three friends for brunch and had a great experience. The inside of the space itself is really nice with a lot of natural lighting and a cool marketplace where you can buy various ingredients if you wanted to cook Vietnamese food at home. I ordered the bittersweet slow drip iced coffee which is a Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk and it was VERY good. Definitely a highlight of my meal. I also ordered a mango mimosa which was pretty good. For food, I ordered the breakfast Bahn Mi which is apparently a popular choice! It was good, and way bigger than I expected it to be! Very well seasoned and a hearty breakfast option. My group also ended up ordering the coconut beignets, and while I don't usually like coconut or coconut flavored things, the beignets were great! My group also happened to go the night before for cocktails in their downstairs lounge and we had a great experience there as well! The drinks were great and the space was very cool. **SRI LANKAN MENU** My husband and I came here for dinner for night one of the special Sri Lankan menu. My husband's entire family is from Sri Lanka, so we were really excited. Some things we really liked, but a lot of the experience left us confused and disappointed. The biggest issue, and why I decided to go as low as 2*, is the timing of serving the food. I was extremely surprised when we were told upon ordering that the food would come as it's ready. Excuse me?? This isn't Sri Lankan tapas! Rice and roti needs to come with the curries! That's how this works! Instead we got our roti well before our curries and, much worse, the rice came long AFTER the crab curry arrived (there was a big gap between the crab curry and the chicken curry). Please don't charge me 50% more than this food should cost and then fail to hit such fundamentals. Winners: Crab Curry, Duck Egg Hopper, and the Coconut Roti. By far the best thing we had was the Maryland Blue Crab Curry. This dish tasted like a genuine Sri Lankan curry, and the crab was cooked perfectly. My favorite way to eat it was with the Coconut Roti, because the latter's sweetness and chewy texture complemented the crab perfectly (but $3 for one roti?!). We also really loved the Duck Egg Hopper; the duck egg yolk was so rich and luscious! My husband was disappointed that it didn't come with anything on the side in terms of sauces, which he said it how it would normally be served. I didn't have that expectation, and the flavor and texture were wonderful. Avoid: Chicken Curry. The sauce was too thin, and there were bones and other inedibles, but mostly this wasn't a Sri Lankan dish(!). Though I didn't have it, I also suggest skipping the biriyani, which is another Indian item rather than Sri Lankan. Also skip the banana funnel cake desert, because it doesn't taste at all of banana. Meh: Rice (too soft), String Hopper (blah and way overpriced), and Samosa (needed more flavor). Overall we didn't feel confident the chef actually knew Sri Lankan food very well. read more

The daiquiri specials ($7 before 7pm!) are really good (especially the dragon fruit!). The service and environment were great. It was very busy but food came quickly. Our server had good recommendations, and we enjoyed the dumplings, brussel sprouts, fried rice, and drunken noodle. I would order any of those things again. Look forward to returning! read more

I've been to doi moi several times. They are a fun place for a happy hour - we enjoyed the vegetarian sampler, served in an adorably stacked steam basket. We enjoyed sitting at the bar, our bartender was busy but very attentive. I also enjoyed the drunken noodles. The basement bar area is definitely not a speak easy. The music can get so loud it is hard to talk, but the drinks are good and the vibes are fun for a night out. read more

We got the last open table and I ordered a combo of small plates--the steamed chicken dumplings, crispy, Brussels sprouts, and wok tossed peanuts. The sprouts were my favorite, cooked well and flavored uniquely with dressing and a little heat. The nuts are a large serving, better to share for the table. This is an interesting place, because it promises French-Vietnamese fusion, and it is unclear what is French about it. They have plenty of vegan options. I had a seasonal drink (don't think it's still on the menu) that had coconut milk in it and I really liked it. The crispy spiced tofu was good, I liked the flavor, and the tofu was cooked well (not the best, but good). I wasn't especially impressed with the drunken noodles; they felt really oily and weighed me down. We were in the mood for something delicious yet healthy, and we decided that Vietnamese would fit the bill nicely. Found Doi Moi online, and off we went. That was our first good decision. The food was excellent, the staff friendly and accommodating, and the casual contemporary vibe was just what we were looking for. Our second good decision was to rely on our server Stella's recommendations when it came to ordering. She led us to the whole fried rockfish, which was exactly as she described, crispy on the outside, and fall off the bone succulent once you cut open. Her next suggestion was their Viet-influenced take on lo Mein, which was a revelation. I seriously can't recall a time when I enjoyed lo Mein more. We then split a bowl of Pho that was excellent as well. Over the last few years, I've cut my sodium intake, so most of the time, Pho just tastes too salty for me. That was not the case here. So it was not only delicious, but it just seemed healthier than usual. That alone may make Doi Moi our go-to spot for Pho going forward. What's interesting is that we ate at this place when they first opened. I wasn't particularly blown away by the food or drinks so placed it on the no-no list: We decided to give this place another try when we needed a place to celebrate the incoming President! The food was SO GOOD! Today is a Monday and a number of restaurants are closed, however Doi Moi wasn't with their 7-7-7. We started out with egg rolls so crispy and nicely seasoned. Next was the Bok Choy sautéed to perfection; spicy but not so spicy sauce. The Basil fried rice had this amazing grill taste while ensuring the rice was the star. The headliner was the crispy Rockfish: served with a light batter and such freshness. You guys know I'm HUGE on service @Dee sealed the deal! I'll be back for sure, probably once a week!!! read more

The fish was bland, unseasoned and fried to death so there was barely any flesh to eat. The bao buns were good and the pork dumplings were ok. The espresso martini was good but the non alcoholic mango daiquiri did not taste like mango at all. Very average food for the high prices. And we were still hungry. My fiancé and I went to dinner at doi moi during restaurant week. All the food was very tasty and served somewhat family style so we shared everything. For apps we had the pork sausage and the chicken bao. I really enjoyed both but thought the bao was better of the two. For dinner: The noodle entree was flavorful and the ribs were absolutely bomb. Would highly recommend both. For dessert, this is were they lost a star. The mango sticky rice was ok not great and the ice cream we both didn't like. It had a tangy almost sour taste to it that wasn't very pleasant. read more
