The Pineapple Express also taste good. I had dumplings and spring rolls. The spring rolls were my favorite although they were a little salty. I think the fish sauce didn't help. Great experience. This Winter Restaurant Week meal was delicious! The duck roll was fantastic on its own, but was served with hoisin sauce. The curry was a teensy bit too sweet for my taste, but it was complex and delicious, and complemented the beef and potatoes well. The strawberry soft serve was phenomenal. I wouldn't recommend mixing it with the chocolate banana ovaltine (which was also really chocolatey and delicious). I also tried the chickpea tofu (polenta-like in texture, reminded me of chickpea fries), mango sticky rice (the mango wasn't ripe enough and the sticky rice was too salty) and the papaya salad (very fresh, bright and spicy!). Our service was also great - one of my friends, being a vegetarian and participating in restaurant week, had some limitations, and the manager allowed her to sub in a starter. My friend decided to take me here for my birthday this past weekend (of course she was unaware that I previously visited and did not have the best experience) Sadly, my birthday experience was not great and this was only because our waiter was the worst and failed to give attention to customers, except when he had to present us with the check. Napkins, extra cutlery, special sauces, water, name it...we had to reach to other tables to get it. The worst! Of course I was planning to give them another try after being contacted by one of the owners, who btw actually did not follow through on her message. But hey! I appreciated my friend for surprising me and I enjoyed my food. I simply dreaded the horrible service AND it was not packed! It was the worst because I generally do not like having to get up and search for a waiter and with this individual, we did. I can't even recall his name but I can recall his poor service. I had a great experience at Doi Moi. On a Thursday evening, the restaurant was busy but not too crowded. Our waitress was attentive and accommodating. The $8 drinks are a good deal, albeit a bit sugary. We ordered brussel sprouts for the table (yum!), as well as a chicken dumpling and a veggie dumpling. I had the pho which I thought was great, and really appreciated the extra teapot of broth. I liked that they included cilantro and Thai basil with the pho but it was awkward to eat an entire stalk of herb - wish it had been chopped up a bit smaller so it wasn't so difficult to eat. My main complaint is that the restaurant was pretty loud - I was having a hard time hearing the people I dined with. Overall, I had a good experience and would definitely return. read more

I heard so many great thing about this place. I went for my birthday and the recommendations to eat here didn't disappoint. The service was excellent and our waiter Roberto made dining fun. The dishes were unique takes on classic dishes. As a Vietnam native, I grew up eating lots of street food. Though the food didn't quite take me back to Vietnam, we enjoyed almost every dish. The beef jerky was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The fried fish was crispy and tender. The basil fried rice was fresh and flavorful. My least favorite was the egg rolls because they were too salty and they don't taste like traditional Vietnamese egg rolls, and the lamb lard was too gamey for my taste but that's my personal preference and not a knock on the dish. read more

Doi Moi was a full on 10/10! We happened upon this restaurant for an early dinner without a reservation and were seated on the cozy patio with heaters. We ordered the veggie sample tower, drunken noodles, and basil fried rice. Everything was amazing and came out steaming hot! The drunken noodles were perfectly cooked and only had a little bit of a spicy kick, the veggie dumplings and bao buns were flavorful and delicious, and the shishito peppers melted in your mouth. My favorite of the sampler was the crispy spiced tofu - it was probably the best tofu I've ever had! One tip is to stagger your ordering if you're doing apps and entrees, otherwise it can all come out at the same time. My mango daiquiri was delicious as well (and only $8!). Doi Moi is definitely a new favorite spot! read more

My brother was in town visiting and we had such a great time at Doi Moi. We ate dinner and then went to the speakeasy downstairs afterward. Wow. This is the best Asian fusion I've had in DC. Love that the restaurant does a mix of representing actual dishes from Southeast Asian countries and of creating new fusion dishes. Highly recommend as someone who eats a LOT of Thai/Vietnamese food! Standouts were the banana blossom salad (really fresh and flavorful) and the whole fried snapper. Also recommend getting copious amounts of sticky rice and roti to go with the curries and sauces. YES! All the food was fantastic. We went here for Winter Restaurant Week and tried different dishes and split everything. They started our meal with a free sampling of a drink - very kind! We got the duck roll - which was delicious and the chicken skewers for the appetizers. I got the beef curry and my friend got the rice noodles (both were sooooo delicious). We both ended up ordering the sticky mango rice for dessert because I was unwilling to share that. The only thing I will say is that it's very little mangos compared to the other places where I have have had the same dessert. I would definitely go back, especially for restaurant week but they do seem to allow for al carte ordering so I feel like I would just have one person order the 3 courses and the other order a separate entree to share and that'll be enough food because we were STUFFED. read more

We don't get to venture into DC very often and finally had a chance today. We decided to try Doi Moi on a whim and were a bit disappointed. :/ I am Vietnamese American and am very acquainted with the flavors of the cuisine. 1. Thé waiters overall were nice and helpful. We were put off by the host who greeted us. He seemed annoyed that we did not have a reservation, mind you this was 1130 on a Sunday and the restaurant was 50% empty. Perhaps it was just a mix up in how we read his body language and tone, but it definitely could have been more welcoming. 2. We ordered the lemongrass chicken bowl - there was ONE piece of chicken. ONE!!! The flavors were lacking in lemongrass, which I imagine would have been more pronounced if chicken were included in the dish. ONE 1inch piece of chicken!!!! (Sorry I am having a hard time letting that one go) 3. The fried spring rolls, which was their version of cha gio for any Vietnamese foodies, was quite salty. The sauce that came with the dish did not stand out very much. 4.
