I was initially drawn to Doi Moi after seeing it on the street after eating at another restaurant half a block down. The inside of the establishment is very aesthetically pleasing and has cozy, fun vibe. We ordered multiple plates and shared between the table. The Crispy Brussels were absolutely delicious. Claire, our server and was extremely friendly and very accommodating. The Lamb Lard was tasty. I throughly enjoyed the sauce! The table also shared the wings and they were steaming hot and fresh. The crisp of the skin was wonderful. Lastly, the chicken dumplings with the fresh veggies on top, were fantastic. The Thai Tea was very bitter and I had to ask for a side of condensed milk to sweeten it. However, Claire was happy to bring me some. This place is great! In general, Asian food in Downtown DC is pretty bad. It was a nice surprise too see such a great Asian restaurant. So this restaurant specializes Southeast Asian cuisine. Interestingly, it has signature food from Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc. I would say it is mostly authentic but has modern influence. I had a passion fruit soda and it was amazing!! I loved it so much. I highly recommend it. It's one of the best soft drinks I've had. For starter, I got Roasted Duck Heart skewers. If you're adventurous, definitely try these. They're very good and have pungent seasoning. For main course, I got Vietnamese Fried Rice. There were a variety of ingredients in this and a lot of textures. For some people, this might be a little bland. But I liked it. For dessert, I got Key Lime Pie. It was very interesting to see a fusion of Key Lime Pie prepared in Southeast Asian way. It was refreshing, not too sweet, and very unique. Service was excellent. The restaurant is very modern and nice. It has an open kitchen where you can see all the actions. I love Doi Moi. I've been here many times but I recently went back since they re-did their menu and added the grab and go window and patio area. While waiting for a table my husband and I went to the grab and go and ordered two drinks. We got Welcome to the Jungle which was overproof white rum, guava, orange, pineapple, and angostura bitters. Definitely felt like we were on vacation! Once we sat at our table we ordered the char kuey teow (stir fried rice noodle), cha gio (fried spring rolls), and suron non kho to (briased pork riblets). I love noodles and the stir fried rice noodles were perfect. It came with rice noodles, egg, sausage, shrimp, bean sprouts, onion, and a black garlic sauce. It was packed with flavor and each bite was better than the last. The fried spring rolls had pork, diced shrimp mushrooms, noodles, onion, fish sauce, all rolled in a wheat wrapper and fried. Again, so good. the outside was perfectly fried but not oily. The filling was flavorful and juicy. Lastly, the braised pork riblets were slow cooked with a sweet citrus soy glaze and sliced chili. The glaze wasn't too sweet and the riblets were moist and so yummy. This is one of my favorite restaurants and I always have a great experience. The staff is friendly and helpful. read more

Great noodle spot on 14th St. The atmosphere is very hip and modern and definitely a hot spot for young professionals. The drinks were great. I had the Thailand draft beer and it was excellent. However, for $7 a draft beer, the pours could be bigger. It was an 8oz glass. The wine pours were also on the lower side. The wings as an appetizer were awesome. I'm not positive what the sauce was but it was top notch and had a nice Asian kick to it. The entrees were delicious and surprisingly large given the drinks and appetizer size. To be honest, couldn't really tell what I was eating besides the shrimp - but everything tasted delicious! Only negatives (and tiny ones if that) were the sizes for the price. It is definitely on the higher end compared to other places but the price is worth the quality of the food. And, the service was good but not that friendly. This is for Bird's Eye, a Doi Moi daytime pop-up: I really, really wanted to like this place. It's so cute, and I am a fan of Southeast Asian flavors. The "Doi nut" with coffee filling is A+. But we also got a chicken sandwich and THERE WAS NO CHICKEN IN THE CHICKEN SANDWICH. Literally (see photo). It was the fried chicken breading without any meat. So confusing, so disappointing. This is my go-to spot in DC. I've sincerely never had a bad item on the menu and it's a must stop spot when I have a visitor in town. I also appreciate that they have a lot of menu options, including gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan. I highly recommend the Sai Gon Fried Rice, mango Parfait (if at brunch), Dumplings, Bao Buns, and Drunken Noodles. We sat at the bar and our bartender Thiya was absolutely amazing and so helpful! She suggested the shaken beef and ratatouille curry, both dishes were really tasty and flavorful. This rating is for tonight's meal; I've eaten here before and like another reviewer found it to be 'eh' just okay. A couple of better dishes, but not something I would go out of my way for - until tonight. First, we were seated quickly and our server was on top of it right away. There were so many things that sounded good and I was determined to have a great meal so we ordered a lot. He advised that we may have had one dish too many (you rarely hear that), but I'm glad we went for it. We had mango with chili salt (my mom will die if she knows how much I paid for 5 pieces of mango), wings, sticky rice, okra, grilled squid, banana leaf salad, duck leg curry and the coconut sticky rice/mango dessert along with honey dew melon pandan soft serve. Let me say right now: if you go here, you must order the okra, squid and soft serve. They're like no other versions of these same things you've had before. Some of the best dishes I've had this year. I'm stuffed and if you put these in front of me right now I'll eat them again. The weaker - but by no means anything but delicious - dishes were the wings and rice/mango dessert. Our server accommodated our request for a small sub on the duck leg curry noodles and also warned us about the heat on a couple dishes. The bussers and other wait staff were also very attentive and quick on water and clearing dishes. Reading other marginal reviews, I think the issue is completely in what you order. The generic items like steamed buns are a serious pass. I live in Chicago so when the bill came I was floored. We were absolutely stuffed and had ordered drinks as well and I expected a bill closer to $200. At $110 plus tax I felt like we had robbed them a bit. It's not a cheap-o Asian hole in the wall, but I'd happily pay this to have the same meal again. read more

Good potion, nice vegetables, yummy pâté. The bread was a bit too hard throughout though, and I wish there had been more spice in the flavors (the only kick I got was from a couple pieces of jalapeño). Drunken Chicken Banh Mi: 3 stars. Again, good portion and vegetables, but needed more spice. This bread was softer inside, I think because the sauce on the chicken kept it moist. Unfortunately the sauce, which was kind of just sweet but not interesting, overwhelmed the other ingredients. It wound up tasting like eating takeout orange chicken on a baguette. The atmosphere is very chic and intimate. Great place for a date or catching up with friends or family. Sadly it is not near a train but near plenty of buses and walking distance from metro stations. The food was great and well priced for restaurant week but not sure outside of that. Some of the items are a bit pricey considering the portion and food(#DC life).While it didn't blow me away, I like the flavors. However I would still recommend this place. The Thai ratatouille was perfectly season and was similar to a curry. The steamed chicken buns were lovely and I recommend them at full price because of the taste and the unique fried chicken style. The crispy fried fish was tender and delicious. It was a bit salty is you do not eat a lot of salt. The free Hendricks taster cocktail was a great touch to the meal, along with the coupon for a free cocktail next time. The Shwe gye was a moist banana bread with bananas foster on top. It was good but not life changing, the same goes for the sticky rice and mango. Thus if you want to skip dessert and focus on food and drinks that would be okay for this place. read more

My friends and I went to Doi Moi last night for dinner and unexpectedly enjoyed the restaurant week menu. We sat at the counter since it was so crowded and got a great view of the open kitchen. Based on recommendations from the waitress, I went with the following courses: First: steamed chicken buns- spicy but very very tasty. Loved and highly recommend them! Second: Duck leg with egg noodles in a curry broth- the curry had amazing flavor and the duck fell off the bone. I preferred the jasmine rice to the egg noodles but both were good. Third: Doinut- cute pub, their donut stuffed with Thai iced tea cream and a brûlée crust on top which was amazing. I shared my friend's bananas foster dessert and the the cake was not to my taste. I also tried my friend's soft serve and while sweet (made with coconut milk), they were a nice ender to the meal. They gave us a free Hendricks taster cocktail at the end of the meal as well which was tasty. Service was great, never ran out of water and friendly waitress. While it didn't blow me away, it was a very solid Asian dinner with excellent flavors. We all liked our meals and would certainly consider coming back. read more

I visited Doi Moi for happy hour and dinner on a Wednesday. The host, Carter, was especially accommodating to my special needs, which I very much appreciated. He made the whole dining experience relaxing and safe, which I cannot say for many other dining establishments in DC. We sat at a booth in the bar area, and the ambiance was perfect - not too loud, but still vibrant. We received consistently great service, from our server to the busboys. Our server understood the menu well, provided recommendations, and was available whenever we needed her, without being overbearing - A+. All of our dishes were amazing, 10/10 would order again. The stir fried rice noodles were a bit salty for my taste, so we reluctantly sent it back, but the waiter took care of it graciously and the chef re-made the dish well beyond my standard.
