My wife and I went on a Friday night. It was busy, but the vibe was great. Music was good and drinks were on point. If I had to critique anything, the AC was set too low, so it was quite cold. Jack, our waiter, was absolutely great! He gave us some amazing recommendations both for food and drinks. Food wise, everything was great. Our favorite dish was the stir fried noodles. We also had the shaken beef, which was delicious. The summer rolls were a little bland, but tasty nonetheless. This place has a lot of potential but my experience tonight was disappointing. The quality of both service, as well as food and drink, was inconsistent. I would return here again, but with lower expectations. I was very excited to check out this spot for a late dinner on a Friday night--Vietnamese food is one of my favorite cuisines and the bustling 14th Street is one DC's top locales for dining and nightlife. However, things got off to an unexpectedly rocky start from the moment I walked in and spoke to the hostess, who was shockingly rude and unhelpful, until she was joined by another whose demeanor was friendly, polite, and professional, and who quickly diffused and resolved the situation. Some of the food was really delicious. The 'shaken beef'--pieces of marinated fillet mignon, served alongside a salad--was really tender and flavorful, though you had to order rice as a separate side dish. However, the stir-fried rice noodle with shrimp and sausage was just way too greasy. The portions of both were large and filling. Notwithstanding their exotic-sounding cocktails, in terms of taste and appearance they are unremarkable (I had 2 cocktails and neither had as much as a garnish, and I really wondered whether they contained any alcohol at all). The servings were small and presentation underwhelming. While I do think this place is worth checking out, they have their work cut out for them to make Doi Moi live up to its potential. read more

The food here is great and I loved the decor of this place. It was super cozy and organic. The service is good too! We ordered the curry with sticky rice, pan fried noodles, and grilled squids. The grilled squids were super spicy for me, so I only ate half of it. Even though it was too spicy for me, it was flavorful and very tender. I liked the grilled onions on top because it added a nice crunch to the meal. My favorite was the pan fried noodles. The noodles were so flavorful and I loved how it had different types of meats in the dish. The Chinese sausage made the dish so tasty and delicious. We also got a curry that came with fried noodles. I loved how the noodles turned soft when you soaked it into the curry soup. The curry was so flavorful and it tasted perfect with the sticky rice. They have a lot of yummy drinks here. I wasn't a fan of their Thai tea because It felt like it was way too sweet for me. It's such a cute place to go for dinner. Also, the perfect spot for a nice date. Was so looking forward to finally trying this place but was so disappointed with the service we received. Came here with a group of 5 friends on a weekday evening for dinner. We sat on their patio and all ordered noodle dishes. Nothing that should take too long. Three of the pho's came out, and we were waiting for our two other friend's dishes. One was a salad dish that didn't come out for another 30 minutes. I ate my pho lukewarm because we waited out 15 mins until our friend insisted we all eat before her salad came out. Because of that, I feel like I can't fairly judge the pho since it was pretty soggy and cold by the time I ate it. I ventured to Doi Moi randomly and it didn't disappoint. The upstairs level was packed for happy hour but the hostess let my friends and I know about their downstairs area. I'm not sure what we expected but it definitely wasn't this. As you go downstairs, you enter and dark, dimly lit, restaurant that is great for date night or a relaxing night out. The music was great and the food/drinks was even better. We had a great server that was attentive and gave some pretty good recommendations. I started with the Elephant in the Room cocktail that had Mezcal tequila, Aperol, and passion fruit. We then got a variety of foods including the crispy brussels (my favorite), french fries, and the meat sampler which included chicken dumplings, pork and shrimp spring rolls (least favorite), jerky, and traditional bao. I came here hangry, and left a happy man. Located just a few blocks from the Dupont Metro station, Doi Moi is easily accessible and perfect for Sunday brunch. It is a cute spot with plenty of outdoor seating right next to a really cool mural. I have no complaints about the service either; everyone was really friendly and accommodating. The food was amazing. I tried and recommend: Braised tofu bahn mi: perfect bahn mi with crunchy baugette and soft, flavorful tofu Crispy brussels sprouts: this are the best brussels I have ever had; I really still think about these daily. They were perfectly dressed and super super crispy Tofu bahn bao: really fluffy steamed buns Five spice frites: I learned that five spice belongs on fries Coconut Beignets: these beignets were fried and frosted with coconut cream, but weren't overwhelmingly sweet or greasy. I've been here twice now (both for restaurant week) and have found I'm a huge fan of Bermese food. I love going for restaurant week because I can try an app and dessert which I don't normally order. I would probably have given them a 5 based on the food, but the service was slacking a bit this most recent time - our full meal took over 2 hours and our dishes came out extremely slow. Granted this may have been due to being busy for restaurant week it was a little disheartening. However, they did bring us a free mango salad but at that point we were already so full it's not really what we wanted. For apps: - Laotian stuffed lemon grass - an interesting piece with pork stuffed inside lemon grass. It ended up being very good, you pull away the lemon grass and have a long pork meatball with a great soy / garlic based sauce to dip. - Fried chick steamed buns - these were delicious and had fresno peppers on top for a nice kick - Green mango salad - this is a nice lighter option, but definitely has a big kick so only get it if you like spicy! - Thai fried beef jerky - Thai beef jerky is a favorite dish of mine because the meat is always so flavorful and tender unlike normal beef jerky. One of my favorites! For entrees: - Jackfruit and purple sweet potato curry: this was surprisingly really good. It was my first time trying jackfruit and I liked it a lot, it mostly takes the taste of the sauce and has a meat like texture. The sauce was very much peanut so if that's what you're looking for it's great! - Rohan duck khao soi: I love curries so this was probably my favorite of the three entrees I've tried. The duck falls off the bone and the curry is delicious - Char kuey Teow noodles: love this dish as well, got it without prawns because I'm allergic but there are plenty of veggies and sausage that it was great without it. Dessert: - I got the vegan soft serve just to try it out and ended up being obsessed. The oat milk and spicy fruit blend perfectly complimented each other and would go back just for this. Unfortunately you have to pay extra now for restaurant week but it's worth it. - Purat Limau pie: this is a slightly varied version of key lime pie with coconut. Pretty good if that's what you're looking for - shwe gye: basically a piece of moist banana bread with bananas foster on top. I'm not a fan of bananas but the people who liked bananas really enjoyed it! read more

I went here based on a suggestion. The menu and pictures looked absolutely delicious so I was thrilled to go here. While the service was decent it wasn't friendly or comfortable. I definitely felt like just another table. It was very rushed. We went during restaurant week so the $35/person deal was great. You got an appetizer, entree, and dessert for that price. I got the tofu steam buns, the short rib in jungle curry and the coconut oat milk ice cream. The sauce with the tofu stems buns wasn't a great complimentary to the tofu. It was overpowering and not in a good way. The short rib was tender and spicy but the flavor wasn't smooth. As a leftover it also didn't transfer the flavors very well. It may have been the fish sauce or another flavor but it was a little too much. However the coconut oat milk ice cream was divine! I absolutely loved this. The coconut wasn't too overpowering and the smoothness of the two flavors were delicious. I also got their passionate fruit cocktail which was a 10/10. I would absolutely recommend that! read more

We are used to go out in DC on weekends and talking loudly but it was a group of 6 of us and even the person sitting next to me I couldn't hear them speak. Also, I didn't notice until after we left but they had charged $14 for scallop carpaccio which none of us ordered and I didn't notice until recently when I went over the bill. They never showed us the bill to check. I didn't want to give 1-star because it was one visit to the basement and I've heard great things from upstairs, especially during HH. 4.5 stars, Doi Moi is awesome!! I've past this place a few times on the street and the cute patio caught my eye in addition to the $7 daquiris. Overall, I had the best experience! The food at doi moi is delicious. I highly recommend the veggie dumplings, brussels sprouts, and basil fried rice. The bao buns aren't bad but compared to some of the other dishes are more on the average side. That being said, everything was delicious and ideal both for sharing and for individual plates. A friend and I shared an entree and 3 small plates and were more than stuffed. Also, don't skip out on dessert, the coconut beignets are to die for they're so delicious. As for drinks, you can't do wrong with the daiquiris. They are on the sweet side but still very delicious. I highly recommend the mango or the watermelon thai basil. I'll be excited to try some of their other drinks when I return. The service is super speedy and attentive. We had our food and drinks in record time. We first enjoyed Doi Moi via delivery. Everything would be tasty and we were always happy that the 5 spice frites would still be crispy and delicious even after traveling across town. So, we put it on our list as places to go in person. I love the vibe, the patio is great for people watching and the retro rock playlist is always on point. Notably we visited on New Years Eve and were pleasantly surprised by the great service on such a busy night. Our favorite dishes are the fried beef jerky, 5 spice frites, cabbage and chicken salad, the salmon fillet and the noodle dishes. We love spicy food and we always comment that their dishes have a nice kick but aren't overwhelming. We went for lunch recently and the service wasn't bad, just a bit slow and clunky. We requested a seat in the lower area so we could see the kitchen action and the host seemed inconvenienced even though there were other diners in that area. I ordered the Thai Iced Tea to start and waited a long time only to be told that they are out of it. So I ordered a bittersweet slow drip instead, and waited. When the server reappeared he seemed surprised that no one had dropped off the coffee in the time he was gone. So, we waited another 5 minutes or so for him to go get it. We ordered dumplings to start (right now they are offering free dumplings, which is great!) and an order of the Viet-Lo noodles and the shredded cabbage and chicken salad. After a while, I realized that there was only one server for the entire restaurant and I felt bad that he had to run around so much. The noodles came first and the dumplings and salad followed a good while afterwards. This made it a bit awkward because we weren't sharing our entrees. Everything was delicious as usual. My friend and I came on a Friday night. All of the tables were booked but we didn't mind sitting on stools and watch the chefs cook. We were immediately seated but our waitress didn't visit us until 10 minutes after we got seated. We had waved another waiter, and he was looking at us but didn't acknowledge us. I ordered the fish head Curry and my friend had the jackfruit Curry. The jackfruit curry was served immediately, but my dish did not come. After my friend had visited almost the entire dish, my dish was still not served. I waved our waitress down, and she said that it was family style so one dish was served one at a time. She said it very dismissively, and "family style" is used for dishes meant to be eaten together, not for dishes that are served one at a time. No apologies came, and I had to wait until my friend was almost done with her plate that I got mine. The food was mediocre. The jackfruit curry was both sour and sweet. The fish head was crispy but there were no vegetables to supplement the dish. I scarfed down the dumplings but would have liked more peanut sauce with them! The Drunken Noodles didn't do it for me unfortunately, and though I had enough for leftovers, I didn't bring them home. Not enough spice or flavor. The Coconut Beignets, however, were incredibly delicious. I also sampled my friend's meal, Lemongrass Chicken Platter, which was beautifully presented and very tasty! The food here is utterly fantastic. I ordered the drunken noodle, chicken wings and spring rolls. I love how the sauces can pretty much be used on everything! The noodles could have just a bit less sauce (as someone who is trying to watch their sodium intake/avoid high blood pressure it's something I naturally pay attention to). The food is also greasy, which was great (if you're not a person who likes greasy food I wouldn't order anything breaded). The drinks were also fruity, but could've had just a bit less liqueur. I was a little underwhelmed with Doi Moi. I got the papaya salad and the mango sticky rice with a passion fruit soda. I think my favorite part of the meal was the passion fruit soda. The mango sticky rice lacked any "interesting" flavor and was pretty basic. The nice purple/blue color was aesthetically pleasing but that was it. The papaya salad tasted like any papaya salad except it was a little spicier than most salads I've had. I did enjoy this because I'm a sucker for spicy foods and I cannot stand "spicy" levels when they're really not spicy. My friend ordered mussels which came about 20 minutes after the rest of us were done with our meal. We had about 3 people approach us to tell her about the delay. Apparently, they had only 1 wok cooking all of our dishes but then when we left we saw 5 woks? Not really sure what the fickle was in that situation. Stopped by Doi Moi after getting drinks at Aslin Beer Company down the street, and the food here did not disappoint. While some of the items have servings that are large enough to constitute a meal, sharing is the way to go. Had a combination of fried rice, dumplings, spring rolls, and bao buns, and everything was really good, particularly the fried rice. We came a little bit before dinner time, and were able to get seated immediately despite not having reservations, but I would imagine the restaurant gets very busy. Will definitely return! read more

The food here is so fresh and so full of flavor! We sat at the bar which is very charming and had quick friendly service. We started with dumplings and bao buns, both being delicious. And then had the drunken chicken bahn mi sandwich and the tofu bahn mi as well. The apps are perfect for sharing and so are sandwiches but also big enough to enjoy alone. We also added on the spice fries with sriracha mayo. The food to cost ratio is on point, overall we will definitely be coming back! read more

Great noodle spot on 14th St. The atmosphere is very hip and modern and definitely a hot spot for young professionals. The drinks were great. I had the Thailand draft beer and it was excellent. However, for $7 a draft beer, the pours could be bigger. It was an 8oz glass. The wine pours were also on the lower side. The wings as an appetizer were awesome. I'm not positive what the sauce was but it was top notch and had a nice Asian kick to it. The entrees were delicious and surprisingly large given the drinks and appetizer size. To be honest, couldn't really tell what I was eating besides the shrimp - but everything tasted delicious! Only negatives (and tiny ones if that) were the sizes for the price. It is definitely on the higher end compared to other places but the price is worth the quality of the food. And, the service was good but not that friendly. This place is great! In general, Asian food in Downtown DC is pretty bad. It was a nice surprise too see such a great Asian restaurant. So this restaurant specializes Southeast Asian cuisine. Interestingly, it has signature food from Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc. I would say it is mostly authentic but has modern influence. I had a passion fruit soda and it was amazing!! I loved it so much. I highly recommend it. It's one of the best soft drinks I've had. For starter, I got Roasted Duck Heart skewers. If you're adventurous, definitely try these. They're very good and have pungent seasoning. For main course, I got Vietnamese Fried Rice. There were a variety of ingredients in this and a lot of textures. For some people, this might be a little bland. But I liked it. For dessert, I got Key Lime Pie. It was very interesting to see a fusion of Key Lime Pie prepared in Southeast Asian way. It was refreshing, not too sweet, and very unique. Service was excellent. The restaurant is very modern and nice. It has an open kitchen where you can see all the actions. I love Doi Moi. I've been here many times but I recently went back since they re-did their menu and added the grab and go window and patio area. While waiting for a table my husband and I went to the grab and go and ordered two drinks. We got Welcome to the Jungle which was overproof white rum, guava, orange, pineapple, and angostura bitters. Definitely felt like we were on vacation! Once we sat at our table we ordered the char kuey teow (stir fried rice noodle), cha gio (fried spring rolls), and suron non kho to (briased pork riblets). I love noodles and the stir fried rice noodles were perfect. It came with rice noodles, egg, sausage, shrimp, bean sprouts, onion, and a black garlic sauce. It was packed with flavor and each bite was better than the last. The fried spring rolls had pork, diced shrimp mushrooms, noodles, onion, fish sauce, all rolled in a wheat wrapper and fried. Again, so good. the outside was perfectly fried but not oily. The filling was flavorful and juicy. Lastly, the braised pork riblets were slow cooked with a sweet citrus soy glaze and sliced chili. The glaze wasn't too sweet and the riblets were moist and so yummy. This is one of my favorite restaurants and I always have a great experience. The staff is friendly and helpful. read more
