Let me tell you about this Saigon Fried Rice! It's literally THEE BEST FRIED RICE I'VE HAD IN MY LIFE! I'm already regretting not ordering some to go and looking forward to the next time I come back! I just keep thinking about it! Seasoned to perfection and no need to add soy sauce or anything like that. It's PERFECT! I'm sure I'll be back very soon because it's been on my mind for 3 hours now! The Shaken Beef is also very yummy as well! IMO... 1 order of Shaken Beef and 1 of Saigon Fried rice would be a perfect meal for 2 people. I went to dinner here on a Friday night at 9:30 during Winter Restaurant Week. My goodness... The RW menu here allows patrons to choose 4 plates each from a menu which includes vegetable, seafood, meat, and dessert options. I opted to skip the dessert option and went with two meat options, a seafood option, and a vegetable option. I ordered the crispy Thai chicken wings, the Vietnamese caramelized pork spare ribs, the sliced raw scallops, and the papaya salad. The papaya salad arrived first. As I was about to dig in I noticed a small hair on one of the papaya slices. Sigh. I alerted a waitress who took the plate away for me, but did not ask if I wanted to switch to another dish. In the meantime, my friends' vegetable dishes had arrived. They ordered the bok choy, the Brussels sprouts, and the okra. OH. EM. GEE. DELICIOUS. I'm a person who feels a meal isn't complete unless there's meat, but I could have honestly eaten those three vegetable sides alone and been A-OK. So flavorful! The waitress eventually brought me a replacement papaya salad, but it paled in comparison to the other vegetable dishes- wouldn't recommend. The raw sliced scallops were to die for. The seasonings are spicy but I could've eaten five plates worth. The chicken wings were also amazing. Crispy and sweet with just the right amount of fish sauce. The ribs were also good, charred nicely, but not as good as the scallops and chicken. The vegetables (minus the papaya) and the scallops alone will make me return to this place. The service was also great. One of the chefs, Sacha, was extremely friendly and came and checked on us a few times. I would have given 4 this place stars, but the hair on the papaya and lack of an offer to replace or other apologetic gesture knocks them down to 3. Best Vietnamese in the city IMO. I stopped by Doi Moi for dinner with girlfriends on a Friday and grabbed an outdoor table for 4. We actually caught their $8 diaquiri special that ended at 8 pm. I tried the dragonfruit and mango. Both were yummy and refreshing. It was sweet but the sweetness wasn't overpowering. We shared vegetable sample tower and basil fried rice because we love variety. I'm a texture person and the tofu was perfectly crisp. Mushroom and tofu bao was good - not as much stuffing as I would've liked to be more hearty. The shishito pepper could've used more seasonings. I expected the Vegetable dumpling to be more firm. The basil fried rice was the star of the meal to me! It was perfect and the portion was big enough for leftovers the next day. read more

Went here for the first time last week with an out of town friends. The place seemed inviting and the outdoor seating area was cute, so we put our names in. There was a wait for outdoor seating on a Thursday night, although I think they may have been able to seat us right away inside. Anyway, there is plenty to do on 14th so we just walked around and explored for a bit. When we got our table, we admired the vibes outside. Very cozy and cute atmosphere. I got a Thai iced tea and my friend got a frozen mixed drink, which she said was amazing. My Thai iced tea was great as well. The menu has quite a few tapas style dishes. We got the veggie dumplings, the chicken&sausage drunken noodles, and the tofu Bahn mi. All of the food was flavorful! The tofu had a good texture and the sauce on the dumplings was great. The drunken noodles were tasty and super filling. We skipped out on dessert but will definitely try it next time. All and all I would go here again and try some other foods. read more

Doi Moi is located in a bustling area with a lot of other stores and restaurants nearby. You have the option of sitting inside or outside, and on certain days their basement speakeasy is available. The restaurant is decorated with a lot of vibrant colors a also includes vegan options! I tried the Obama Bun Cha ($25.50), which is inspired by Obama's meal with Anthony Bourdain in Hanoi, and also the Pho Dip Banh Mi ($15.50). For my drink I got the Iced Bittersweet Slow Drip ($5.50). What stood out for both dishes was how flavorful the broth was. I wouldn't call this authentic Vietnamese food, but it has its own little twist to it. I'm honestly not the most enthusiastic fan of Asian fusion and I'm generally a purist when it comes to food; why fix what's not broken. But I'll give Doi Moi points for ingenuity. All in all, Doi Moi was a fun experience and I'd come here on a night out with friends, but the food was on the more expensive side and generally not what I'd go for if I was looking for Vietnamese. TLDR: A fun place to experience and try on a night out with friends, but I wouldn't come here if you're looking for traditional Vietnamese food. read more

Delicious Viet food! The sauce that came on the dumplings was sweet and tangy. The drinks are also really good and they have an $8 happy hour for daiquiris. The service is fast and they can handle large parties. The portions are large, so most of us took some dishes to go, especially the noodle dishes. Delicious food, good vibes, and a cute basement bar!! -Mekong Whole Fish - I love whole fish and they fried theirs nicely! Super crispy to the point I can munch on the tail/funs. The fish meat was moist and I liked the seasoning salt that came with it. -Drunken Noodles - loved the long flat noodles with a nice soy based sauce and mixed veggies! You could really taste the "wok hei" which can be translated to "wok fire" or "wok air." It's that charcoal-y/smokey aroma that gives a dish it's street-style feel. -Brussel sprouts - your typically crispy sprouts with crunchy shallots! -Grilled Beef Platter - The beef was chewy but I wish the marinate was stronger? My girlfriend and I chose to dine here the other day and to put it simply, we were not impressed. I had ordered the Pho ($18.50) and my girlfriend had ordered the Drunken Noodles ($18.00). The Pho was not only incredibly expensive for what Pho usually is in ACTUAL Vietnamese restaurants, it came in an incredibly small bowl, the size you would get as a kiddie size at a normal Vietnamese pho restaurant for half the price. They had also put in all of the toppings that would traditionally come as an optional side (basil leaves, bean sprouts, jalapeños) as I do not like putting these in my Pho, I was appalled that they were already added. I will also add that the Pho broth lacked the umami that pho broth usually has from simmering beef bones for hours and hours. It was bland and tasted like instant packaged pho that you would get as a 6 pack from the " asian " section at Whole Foods (not a good thing). The Drunken Noodles that my girlfriend bought did not disappoint me as much as the pho did. I will say though that we had added chicken to the drunken noodles and were charged ($9.50) for adding CHICKEN. The noodles were far too wet to be considered drunken noodles and honestly did not even taste like it. I had to bring the noodles home myself and recook the noodles adding in everything that was missing for Drunken Noodles, because I was so appalled at how wrong the cooks had gotten this. To top things off it came out pretty long after I had already gotten my pho. I thought that it was standard practice to bring entrees out around the same time, especially for literally just two entrees on a two top with no apps and just water. The service was not bad and visually the restaurant is very pretty, I firmly believe that this restaurant is the perfect place for people who think Panda Express is real Chinese food. If you want to try real, authentic and culturally appropriate Vietnamese food, please try going to Eden Center in Falls Church. It is really not hard to find good Asian food in the DMV. Another issue I had was that they were selling fish sauce for an inflated price like it was something exotic and hard to come by. Please just go to a local Asian market, it is not hard to find in DC. All in all, Doi Moi was an incredibly poor representation of Vietnamese food and asian food in general and honestly, very culturally offensive. read more

It's a strange place for me with some hits, some misses, and some kinda hits. Let me start by explaining what this place is. I'm super confused about what this place is. Is it Vietnamese, is it fusion or doing a twist on Vietnamese food? Let me share the hits. Hits - Vietnamese ice coffee. This was pretty good. After having some of the food that didn't taste quite like Vietnamese food I was hesitant about the iced coffee. It has to have condensed milk w expresso strong coffee. They did this one good. - Kho Bo. This wasn't quite the original beef dish but strangely was tasty. It feels like I'm watching Beat Bobby Flay show where Bobby puts together dishes he never made before but puts his own spin on it and wins. It was good but unexpectedly good. - Grilled Pork Chop Platter. What the heck! They give you huge portions of pork, like double the amount I usually get. Pretty tasty too. - Coconut Beignets. These were great desserts and delicious, would order again. The Misses - Fried Spring Rolls. These were no bueno. Nothing like a Vietnamese spring roll. These are my go to apps but avoid these. - Fish Sauce. Mannn why change the standard with whatever they were doing. Trying to be different, that's cool but not with my Nuoc Mam! Bad decision. Kinda Hits - Pho. To me it was just okay. My kids said it was the best pho they had but they are only 6 and 9 so their opinions don't count that much. I thought it sorta tasted like Pho. These are the kind of dishes that it's hard to experiment with. Plus they don't give you hoisin sauce for dipping or adding. They have their own version and it's like the fish sauce, don't do it! Overall, not bad but not great. I think maybe I would've given a higher rating but I was confused about the concept of this restaurant along with the changes in Fish Sauce and Hoison sauce which should remain classic! They have a great brunch and dinner menu. I have been numerous times and mostly recently went for brunch. My friend and I split a bunch of dishes including the drunken noodles (a personal favorite), spring rolls, the lemon grass chicken bowl, and the honeycomb cakes. The drinks are also very good and the bottomless brunch deal is pretty good, highly recommend the Saigon Sparkler. read more

I love this place and the only reason I don't give it 5-stars is because they promote it as Vietnamese street food but the price is nowhere close to what you would actually pay for street food - it is much more expensive. But despite of that, I've been to this restaurant several times and I am absolutely obsessed with their beef jerky, and everything else really. Tried Doi Moi for a second time with a group of my friends on a Saturday night. We had a reservation for 5 and the restaurant was pretty empty around 6-7. We decided to share a few dishes among the group, so we each picked out a dish or two. Service was okay and made some suggestions for our meal. Food: Kee Mao Rice Noodles - Pretty safe rice noodle dish which was mostly like drunken noodles. Basil Fried Rice - Another safe rice dish, just classic fried rice with basil. Jackfruit & Purple Sweet Potato Curry - The jackfruit was really mushy and a bad texture/weird sweetness in the curry. I was not a fan of it at all and my friends that love jackfruit were not happy with the dish. Ikan Bakar Grilled Branzino - The Branzino was cooked in a leaf and had two different spices cooked on each half of the fish (one spicy and one not). It was a beautiful dish with the fish wrapped in the leaf and a side of roti too. Stir-Fried Chinese Broccoli - Solid veggie dish, nothing special. Overall, not too impressed with my visit to Doi Moi. There are a lot of other 14th street restaurants that I would rather eat at over Doi Moi, especially for the price. read more

There were 3 beef dishes on the menu and when i asked the waitress what the difference between them was she basically read the menu for me, like yes, i can read, tell me about the actual dish because they all sound kind of the same to me. the good: Steamed dumpings basil fried rice (they can also add chicken to this for a up charge) arctic salmon the meh: flash fried beef jerky grilled beef platter spring rolls the unclear if my friend liked it or not but she didnt finish it or take the sizable leftovers home: obama's bun cha for a place with so many fun drinks we were kinda underwhelmed by their quality. Like the thai iced tea and bitter sweet slow drip coffee were not sweet and we had to ask for extra sugar, they also came just downing in ice (the hot version is quite small), so maybe we got a solid 4 sips of actual beverage? the daiquiris are ok but are served on ice/ not frozen, which i am not used to seeing. read more

The riblets were definitely my favorite. The meet was flavorful and tender and pretty close to falling off the bone. The char kuey teow was pretty solid too. May be a tad bit salty. The crispy whole fish was cooked well, but a tad bit bland if eating without the dipping fish sauce or specialty salt that it came with. The biggest letdown for me was definitely the cocktails. Very watery and lack of flavor in the ones that we ordered. So overall some hits and misses. read more

Was so looking forward to finally trying this place but was so disappointed with the service we received. Came here with a group of 5 friends on a weekday evening for dinner. We sat on their patio and all ordered noodle dishes. Nothing that should take too long. Three of the pho's came out, and we were waiting for our two other friend's dishes. One was a salad dish that didn't come out for another 30 minutes. I ate my pho lukewarm because we waited out 15 mins until our friend insisted we all eat before her salad came out. Because of that, I feel like I can't fairly judge the pho since it was pretty soggy and cold by the time I ate it. It's been a few years, but my friend recently recommended doi moi for brunch so I made a reservations when a few folks were in town! We made reservations for four but was able to add a last minute person by calling directly! The location is so cute and the menu is big enough that everyone can find something. We started off with the crispy brussel sprouts and a round of the $7 daiquiris. The table ordered the banh mi breakfast, doi moi benedict, lemongrass chicken bowl, and an order of baos. We decided to stop at Doi Moi after an afternoon of walking around DC. For a party of 2 at 6:30 on Saturday we only waited about 25 minutes for a table on the patio (which had overhead heaters!). My husband ordered the pho and I got the citrus chicken platter. Both dishes were super flavorful, and the chicken was extremely tender. The one downside was that my husbands order came out about 10 minutes before mine so he was almost done eating by time my food arrived. Otherwise, service was friendly and welcoming. Cute place! I stopped in for drinks & snacks at the bar. I had a frozen wine drink (forgot the name) & a chicken steamed bun which was really good. I gave 4 stars because I wanted to taste the chicken skewers and they didn't have any even though they were only 40 mins into opening. A lot of people at the bar were asking for them too. Also I got there at 4:40 but they open at 5pm. There was a sign that had the hours but said "come in and join us for happy hour in the meantime" or something like that. How is it that this is the only place with amazing vegan soft serve in DC? I don't know, but I love it. They have sticky rice with extra flair and mango, too- the most simple but fun touches to bring color and flavor to an already delightful dessert. Really though, what's most fun here for me is the soft serve! After that, though, the menu is quite extraordinary. They make it friendly to vegan and gluten free diets, and the folks here are super informed. Be wary of the odors if you don't like seafood or other stuff deep fried and emanating throughout the dining room. If this is a concern, might be best to avoid it. They have some outdoor seating and the room for seating behind the open kitchen might help, but again, depends on your sensitivity. The curry here is delightfully flavorful- I have never enjoyed curry jackfruit more than here! Rice is extra though. I also adore their papaya salad and Chinese broccoli. Others will rave about, and I support, the tasty kee mao broad rice noodles. Cooked perfectly. There's something fun for everyone, but I've focused on the vegan and gluten free items. The menu changes, so if you had a special dish, don't be surprised if it's not there another time. Brussels sprouts? Ratatouille? So many fun choices. The flavor profile is excellent for every dish here. You can't go wrong. However, do note if you're rather hungry, one dish is not enough. My friend and I stopped by for lunch one sunny day and the host sat us at a nice table in the patio. It took about five minutes for a server to stop by our table, and it seemed like no one decided who was going to own it. We ordered their watermelon juice and an egg coffee (cafe truong - Vietnamese "espresso", condensed milk, egg yolk) that was easy to drink. The server was new (because he told us) and did not know how to answer questions about the menu. We ordered what we thought sounded great. For apps, we got the fried tofu and bo luc lac and then whole fried snapper for our main to share. If I tried to compare the flavors to a more authentic restaurant, it wouldn't be fair, so for what it is, the meal was good. Everything was seasoned and the presentation of the food photographs well. One suggestion I would make is to provide rice paper for the guests, especially for the whole fish. There's a good selection of food and we tried a lot of plates, but generally felt everything was pretty bland. This was my first experience at Doi Moi. Such a pretty venue. The lighting is a bit dim so perfect for date night. I came for an early dinner. Our waiter was very nice and explained a lot of the dishes I was not familiar with. I gave him an idea of the proteins I had a taste for and highly recommended the steak app. I believe it was a form of jerky but it was not dry at all on the inside. Quite juicy!
