Swung in for a bite during a rainy Sunday. Sat outside which was quite lovely with the rain due to the roof built over the el fresco dining area. Ordered the crispy Brussels, the fried beef jerky, and the braised ribblet. I have a healthy appetite but that proved to be plenty for me even though I was sharing most of it. The Brussels sprouts were decent, though not particularly special. The ribblets were sweet and sour and quite tasty but a little hard. The fried beef jerky didn't taste like beef jerky--but it was addictive. It had a tangy kick that wasn't overpowering but was enjoyable. I came in on a Friday night around 6 pm and was told the only table available was on the patio which I accepted. 5 minutes later two white women walked in and came on the patio but couldn't find any free seating and they went inside and were promptly seated indoors. After our meal (which was delicious) we headed to the downstairs bar and sat at a table where a white waitress refused to serve us and onto acknowledged white patrons. The food at Doi Moi was SO GOOD. In particular, I was wow'd by the crispy whole fried snapper (perfectly crispy, and that sauce!), the grilled pork ribs, and the Vietnamese fried rice. Of those three -- I couldn't pick a favorite. We also tried the scallop carpaccio (REALLY spicy -- and overpriced -- you maybe get a half a scallop total), the coconut lemongrass jasmine rice (a great basic, but also way overpriced for one tiny scoop of rice), and the Ala Thel Dala Deviled Potatoes (meh -- really needed salt). For two people we thought that would be an insane amount of food, but I left comfortably full -- the portions are fairly small. Unfortunately they were out of the mango freisling, but my flower that blooms in adversity was yummy nevertheless. The suffering is optional was really good -- with a lingering heat. Our service was underwhelming at best. Our server was awkward. She couldn't seem to manage to hold a water pitcher and do anything else, so she kept walking away every time we opened our mouths to put it down. She also didn't know much about food, rarely checked on us, and gave us the check without asking if we wanted dessert first (we did -- so now I'll never know what that awesome looking ice cream tastes like). The food came really fast, and all at once. So, our table was far too crowded. But if you want solid food with a solid ambiance, doi moi is your perfect place for a dinner on any day of the week. My friend and I split the fried tofu, mushroom and tofu buns, and char kuey teow. Doi Moi has an open modern feel to the dining space with large windows that line the restaurant. It has a good amount of seating so you don't usually need to wait, and if you're dining in the warmer months there's a large outdoor patio perfect for people watching right on 14th street. They do spicy food well here, and when something says its spicy, let me tell you... it is spicy. I'm not a master of spicy foods but I can usually hold my own but the Salt and Pepper Squid was too spicy for me to eat. I imagine if you like things extremely spicy you would like this dish because the squid itself was good and I could tell it had great flavor that was then sinched away by the heat. Proceed with caution on this one. The Green Mango Salad was a great counter balance and one of my favorite dishes, very fresh and crunchy with lots of cashews. This also has a pop of spice, but just the right amount for me. The Jackfruit and Purple Sweet Potato Curry had really good texture with creamy sauce and starchy veggies that were the perfect of combo of dense and soft but the flavor was more mild. The Half Chicken was good, crispy flavorful skin and moist throughout both the dark and white meat. Sauce was sweet and a little tangy. I dont eat beef but my co-diners said the beef jerky was good and the sauce was spicy. Their menu also has sections that list out all the vegetarian and gluten free dishes (which there are a bunch!) so its accommodating to dietary restrictions. I went to Doi Moi for restaurant week and the food was fine but there was nothing I ate that I truly loved or was notably tasty. I went to Doi Moi about a year ago not for restaurant week and loved it so I was disappointed with the restaurant week menu. The lemongrass pork dish was tasty but the amount of meat was really small and the waiter just dropped off the dish without explanation, when it was actually a pretty unique dish (I'd almost describe it like a Laotian tamale), that my friend and I had to call the waiter back over to explain the best way to open it. The duck curry dish was tasty but nothing special, and the presentation made it kind of hard to eat. There are these really long crispy wontons on top that were tasty but kind of difficult to eat. The prawn and noodle dish was probably the tastiest, but other than the prawns and sausage, it wasn't particularly special and the noodles tasted like your standard drunken noodles. For dessert I got the sticky rice and mango. I would call it more interesting than tasty. Overall, I think the restaurant week menu wasn't their best. The presentations were visually pretty but difficult to navigate and the food was only okay. Not personally worth it for restaurant week. read more

Very disappointing... Was looking forward to trying a new Vietnamese spot and was craving some appetizers so I ordered fried spring rolls with tofu and "sizzling" vegetable dumplings. Picked up my food around closing time and the dumplings were luke warm (not "sizzling" or hot) at best and smooshed/matted together because they were piled on top of one another in a small cardboard box. When I tried to take them apart to eat, they ripped and the filling came out. But my 2-star review is mostly about the flavor, or lack there of. Very bland/barely any flavor. Audrey, our server, was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and drinks, and her service was impeccable. The food was also amazing. Our group had the BEST time! Tofu/mushroom curry - wasn't thrilled with the presentation of this dish (looked extremely sloppy) and the flavors were just ok. The dish is definitely spicy so beware. Doi Moi is one of my favorite restaurants on 14th, maybe even in DC! Simply put, the food is delicious and flavorful, and the drinks are amazing. Dining here always feels like a special treat, and I feel that their pricing is very fair. I love getting their small plates because I want a taste of everything! Some favorites are the pork dumplings, khô bò, and crispy Brussels sprouts. And my favorite cocktail is the Wandering Becky (which isn't on their current abbreviated menu unfortunately due to COVID times). The service is always friendly. They have plenty of outdoor seating, with heaters and nice lighting. Also, the inside of the restaurant was recently updated and it's beautiful! I can't wait to sit inside, especially at the bar. Umm. Probably not going here again. The staff seem pretty incompetent on seating guests. An employee brought out silverware and utensils that were disgustingly filthy. Luckily chop sticks were available. I had the curry ratatouille. It was okay. They serving was a lot larger than expected, and the rice served was not nearly enough for the dish. I was impressed by the fried brusselsprouts very tasty. The waiter was also challenged during payment. Welp.... my friend and I walked into this place looking superrrrrr bummy, and ended up looking even crazier because it's such a cute spot!!! The restaurant is bright and spacious, more of a restaurant kind of setup, then if you go down stairs, theirs another spot called "Two birds, one stone," but don't let this confuse you....because it's two separate places. My friend and I were not happy with our first server. He wasn't interested in explaining the menu at all, or didn't know the answers to any questions in regards to the menu/restaurant. I nicely asked the hostess for a new server because our night started out rough there. A new server came, which was nice, and took care of my alcoholic beverage. For starters, we had the crispy rice steam buns, which were pretty good. Our favorites were the Thai style fried marinated beef (SO GOOD), don't forget to dip the beef in the sauce. Also, the kee mao stir fried rice noodles, have to get them. The spices were perfect, really enjoyed this! Overall great place, just didn't have the best service in the beginning! read more

Visited Doi Moi for the first time this Monday. My partner and I wanted to try out the $9 Saigon Sparkler advertised on the happy hour menu. Upon closing out, we were charged over $13 for each cocktail. No big deal, our bartender was nice and went to get a manager to reverse the charge. Then we found out that the "corrected" charge was still $11 per drink. I confirmed that the price was supposed to be $9 on their in-person and online menus. I'd give this a three and a half star if I could. As with most places on 14 th, come early or be prepared to wait for awhile. I came at 6 on a Friday, and it was largely empty but filled up fast. There's a nice patio area on the side. The eggplant dip appetizer served with three baked rice cakes and a selection of veggies was very good. Nicely spiced, flavorful, a great combo. The reason I'm giving this place a three is that I really did not enjoy the mushroom tofu curry. It had some very bitter, seemingly almost uncooked vegetables in it, and had a lot of spices that didn't seem to gel together. I have almost not found a Vietnamese or south East Asian dish I didn't like here or when I was traveling around there, so this was a real disappointment. My friend was quite happy with her chiang Mai chicken curry, though. I would go back at some point though I'm in no rush to do so. I found it slightly overpriced. The waiters and staff were too aggressive in trying to take away the plates. When our entrees came, even though the appetizer was only half done and we were continuing to eat it, they tried to take away the appetizer at least five times. It was clear they wanted to cycle through tables as fast as possible. All in all, a so so 14th street experience. read more

I truly appreciate the diversity of the staff because it shows that the owner wanted to embrace the community in which he/she opened the business. I like the concept of the white tones and Swedish-like decor. The only issue that I had was there were professional photographers that kept intruding on our space (literally butts in our faces) and dinner. However, I understand folks want to make there Instagram pop with great pictures. ~Food The presentation of the food was 5 stars. However, the taste of the food was 3 stars. We ordered papaya salad, a cod/curry dish, and a veggie rice noodle dish. The papaya salad was pretty mild in taste with herbs, yet spicy. As we ate, we both realized that the salad was missing "something". My cod/curry dish looked freaking amazing, yet the flavor profile was turned way down. I truly wish if the dish called for ginger or lemongrass that the chef would've added more. My Cod was perfectly cooked, but it didn't taste like anything. Out of respect for Asian dishes, I ate it as it was prepared. The veggies rice noodle dish was just packed to go.
